Bluray better quality sometimes same price as dvd every once in a while. Nothing wrong with dvd I buy both. If I have a choice I go with bluray if price difference isn't to big.
@megamikethemovieman No, if bluray, not much more, then I'll get that. Depends on the title as well. One I know I like I get blu-ray if price difference isn't much.
I had just north of 750 dvd's, I got rid of damn near all but the extremely rare "may never see again" movies. I now have just south of a thousand blurays, more than I could keep in their boxes 😢, I got rid of all the cases and now have a few binders.
I always buy the highest quality in order to preserve the media in its best. However, there have been times where the DVD copy is either the only copy OR a more faithful to the original (Star Wars). My biggest issue is trying to tell what copy I should buy. 3D animated movies are the worse because they use up scaling but that upscaling isn't terrible... I hate being SO meticulous with my collection...
@@megamikethemovieman I usually stick with the most "standard" copy out there. I *rry* not to "play favorites" unless it's a movie I REALLY love. All super great points. I definitely have more blus in my collection than I do dvds. Definitely trying to upgrade what I can for a right price, but obviously not everything has made the format jump. I do lean more towards blus, but honestly dvd prices are too hard to pass up. I'd say another pro for dvds is the bonus/special features. They seem to often times have more than what blus offer nowadays.
@@mirandasmoviemadness I’m guessing because they aren’t as much as a selling point for most consumers now. Many people I know will only watch the movie and won’t even try out the special features.
@hednik, get yourself a dlp projector, they are like crt tvs, in that dvds still look freekin sweet on them. Even at 135inches. You, i guess like a lot of other people, got duped into buying flat screen tvs, which have always been an inferior technology to crt, but had the convenience of being large, thin and light weight. But most, if not all flat screens are terrible for picture quality. And thus it was necessary to upgrade to blu ray.
I too collect Blu-ray, but surely enough I find DVDs to have the best preserved copy avaliable. Not to mention I watch Futurama and The Simpsons on my 1080p TV and don't mind the lower resolution and often can look past it
I don’t know what types of TVs you guys use for your DVDs but I have a 65inch 4K and trying to watch a DVD is absolutely terrible! Even Tubi Tv which streams at 480-720p looks way better than a DVD. Are you guys using small older tvs when watching DVDs???
@@reyrey5250 Agreed, DVDs don’t look that great to me either. They may be slightly upscaled with a 4K player but there’s a major difference between that and a 4K disc right?

I’m a little surprised to see so many videos of people saying there canceling streaming and buying DVDs to have a physical copy with such low quality, grabbing a blu ray or a 4k makes total sense .

mike excallent video. What I find inexcuseable is that a nature documentary will be broadcast in HD, but afterwards only be offered on DVD, like wakey wakey smell the coffee
Blu-ray is the winner every time for all the points you mentioned. Quite often I have seen the bluray actually cheaper than the DVD (for some titles). I will always buy blu-ray over DVD but if there is only the DVD, then I will go for that (or if the blu-ray is crazily priced). Blu-ray even wins out over 4K (mainly for price reasons), though with many of the 4K boxes you get the blu-ray and 4K. The size is definitely a thing as well, DVD cases especially if it is a complete or season set are just way too bulky, the blu-ray often gets it in a fairly small box (though they can be flimsy). Also, surviving scratches etc, blu-rays definitely win out. Also blu-rays often win out with the extras though not always over DVD. DVD is a great way for picking up films you really don't know about and probably will dump after watching them, such as ones picked up for 25p or so in a local charity store. I often decide to buy a cheapo film and sometimes they are great, sometimes not so great after the first ten minutes.
@@megamikethemovieman I have yet to get rid of a single blu-ray (other than ones that are damaged) but I have dumped many DVDs mainly as I am just buying ones that I may or may not enjoy.
@@megamikethemovieman Ha, yes, generally. Most of the (if not all) of the blu-ray ones are films that I have wanted for a while (and seen). Even more so when it comes to 4K and they are my mega favourite films such as Silent Running, Carrie etc. I doubt I would pick up a random 4K just yet (when they get down to £1 or so each, perhaps)
@@Graphicxtras1 I’m starting to be more selective on 4Ks myself, I need resist the urge to buy if I haven’t seen before, because they are so pricey now. Or wait on sales and discounts. In many cases the DVD cost almost as much as the Blu-ray. For example Alita that I wanted to buy was 8 Euros for both. I got the Blu-ray then for 3 Euros used.. haha Lets look at something new: Transformers One Blu Ray is 15 Euros, DVD is 12. Alien Romulus: Blu Ray is 18 Euros, DVD is 15 DVD IMO also has less resale value Of course I have a few DVDs, because there was no Blu-ray Release..😀
For all general purposes, DVD 📀. They play in DVD players 📀, some laptops 📀, and even some tablets. 📀. On a personal note, the luxury of being able to sit down in front of a huge screen for me has been gone for some years now. 4K is already doomed.
@@megamikethemovieman I honestly wish I could Mike. Sigh. 🤔 But it's not all bad. You wait for the DVD 📀 and you save money. 🤔 And if it's not on DVD, Amazon PV is helpful and portable. 🤔 All you need is a laptop or tablet. 🤠
@@megamikethemovieman My tablet, no. But then I didn't expect it to. But having a DVD player knocks out that complaint. My laptop DOES. Now my 9:7 " PRO obviously has no DVD player. But STRANGELY enough, that has a very sharp screen.
Nothing wrong with a good quality DVD especially if you pick it up for 25c in a charity/thrift store and/or it's your only option because the movie doesn't have a Blu-ray release but it's a complete no contest in terms of "which is better". If you have the option of a Blu-ray then picture quality (and usually sound quality) will be vastly superior and ultimately that has to be the most important criteria for which is best for watching movies. 4Ks are a different conversation because the upgrade is not always significant (and sometimes subjectively is not always an upgrade !) which means the cost, availability, portability and reliability factors weigh much higher...but Blu-ray vs DVD is a no contest imo. If streaming hadn't kicked off and (almost completely) killed the physical rental market then Blu-rays would have completely replaced DVDs by now and would be "the standard" that everyone was renting from their local "Blockbuster" imo.
@@megamikethemovieman I think so. DVD was a huge upgrade from VHS, like everything else it took a few years to become mainstream and for the technology to become affordable but once it got going everyone upgraded because it was such an improvement in all sorts of ways. The leap from DVD to Blu-ray is a similar leap...if no one had access to streaming then all the Blockbusters would've started stocking blu-rays and people would have gradually moved over and by now it would have become the standard...but the average consumer is "happy" with streaming instead. I do feel the tide might be starting to turn at least a little because (1) so many different streaming services now exist and have exclusive rights to certain movies and few people have the money or desire to subscribe to 20 different services ! (2) some movies have very short life on some streaming services and people are getting miffed that a movie they watched one month they can't watch again a month later because it's no longer available on the service they pay for (3) some services are starting to introduce adverts into the core packages and people don't like that ! (4) there is soooooo much rubbish being put out on some streaming platforms that people are getting sick of paying for it. The streaming model has severely damaged the movie industry. There's a great "hot ones" interview with Matt Damon where he talks about how important the DVD rental/owners market was to the movie industry and how that now it's gone it's caused the industry a lot of problems in terms of revenue, risk taking and creativity...well worth a look if you haven't seen it.
@@megamikethemovieman I did leave a pretty long reply to this Mike that I spent quite a bit of time writing/formatting but it's vanished (youtube is really annoying with comments sometimes !!!) so I'll just give the short answer...yes 🙂
@@megamikethemovieman No need to apologise Mike ! It happens to me now and again (on various channels) and I've seen many people say similar things...it is what it is but it really does waste people's time. I think the alogorithm punishes people that leave lengthy posts (that they think about and re-word as they type them) because they think it's spam or something. Putting that to one side imo if streaming wasn't a thing then Blu-ray would have (almost) completely replaced DVD by now just as DVD completely replaced VHS...but most people are happy to stream and that hurt DVD rentals/sales and prevented Blu-ray flourishing (I said more previously but I don't have the time to go into it). Keep up the good work m8 ! 🙂

I subscribed with all notifications. I personally have a little redundancy with my Blu-Ray and DVD media. I do have to use paid software to play a Blu-Ray movie on these computers (only plays Blu-Ray movies through a paid version of Cyberlink), but it is worth it for me at least.
Blue-Ray is better. No doubt about it. It wins for the best quality. But is it more practical? I'm leaning towards no. DVD wins for being more cheaper, adaptable, and convenient. I would pick DVD over Blu-ray for those reasons. Also because I watch on a small widescreen.
Still to this day, i can't understand why DVD and bluray is not ships in those same cases CD's come in, it is smarter takes up less space. Less plastic, because CD's, DVD's and blurays uses the same casing.
@@megamikethemovieman Maybe, but that could be fixed by colors. When the cd,dvd or bluray are standing on a shelf, that side were the text is, the band and album name or movie title is, on the top could a color code be, yello for music, green or blue for xbox / playation, and orange for bluray. If you look at your own cd's (if you have those), you can see them apart, just think about what 5 or 10 mm from the top is a color. Or the whole cover could be a color. Just think about the VHS tapes and the covers, no waste of space 😀

I’m so stressed with my collection
I’ve been wanting to upgrade my DVDs to Blu-ray’s/4k
Issue is I have over 600 DVDs
Then I have over 700 Blu-ray’s
No way I can upgrade those all
Feel like it’s wasting money to rebuy movies I own
I don’t double dip myself. Do you notice a big difference in quality on the ones you’ve upgraded?
Bluray better quality sometimes same price as dvd every once in a while. Nothing wrong with dvd I buy both. If I have a choice I go with bluray if price difference isn't to big.
How often do you notice the prices fairly comparable?
@megamikethemovieman Not to often I think twice they were the same price. So I got bluray because price was the same.
@@djhaack9239 Makes sense. Do you get most DVDs brand new right when they release or do you wait for price drops?
@megamikethemovieman No, if bluray, not much more, then I'll get that. Depends on the title as well. One I know I like I get blu-ray if price difference isn't much.
I had just north of 750 dvd's, I got rid of damn near all but the extremely rare "may never see again" movies. I now have just south of a thousand blurays, more than I could keep in their boxes 😢, I got rid of all the cases and now have a few binders.
Thats a good storage saving solution though. And having the discs are the most important I always say.
So always 4K if there is one available then? And are you more into steelbooks or slipcovers with them?
@@megamikethemovieman I usually stick with the most "standard" copy out there. I *rry* not to "play favorites" unless it's a movie I REALLY love. I have the steel books for RoboCop, Starship Troopers, and Total Recall.
My exceptions are the Criterion Collection. If a movie is released by them then I get those instead.
@@realDesertLad Great steelbook choices! Starship Troopers is so fun. Criterion is probably my favorite boutique label as well. I can’t wait for the next sale in July. Do you buy Criterions only in the Sale times?
All super great points. I definitely have more blus in my collection than I do dvds. Definitely trying to upgrade what I can for a right price, but obviously not everything has made the format jump. I do lean more towards blus, but honestly dvd prices are too hard to pass up.
I'd say another pro for dvds is the bonus/special features. They seem to often times have more than what blus offer nowadays.
Special features are awesome! Why do you think Blu-ray’s have been including less of those?
@@megamikethemovieman Beats me! Maybe they're just too focused on the quality & sound & think it's ok to skimp out on the specials. Why do you think?
@@mirandasmoviemadness I’m guessing because they aren’t as much as a selling point for most consumers now. Many people I know will only watch the movie and won’t even try out the special features.

DVD was still made for CRT being its main use. Modern TVs are too big for the lower resolution media.
So do you only collect Blu-ray’s then?
@@megamikethemovieman and 4k. I do buy some of the really cool packaged DVDs though. E g. The alien quadrilogy or the Terminator 2 special editions
@@megamikethemovieman I do. Doing the whole CRT and retro thing as well is just too much to keep up with. I have a few DVD but only to collect.

Do you ever get rid of any Blu-ray’s or just DVDs when you don’t like them?
@@megamikethemovieman I have yet to get rid of a single blu-ray (other than ones that are damaged) but I have dumped many DVDs mainly as I am just buying ones that I may or may not enjoy.
@@Graphicxtras1 So only blind buys on DVDs, not the Blu-rays?
I got the Blu-ray then for 3 Euros used.. haha
Lets look at something new:
Transformers One Blu Ray is 15 Euros, DVD is 12.

For all general purposes, DVD 📀. They play in DVD players 📀, some laptops 📀, and even some tablets. 📀. On a personal note, the luxury of being able to sit down in front of a huge screen for me has been gone for some years now. 4K is already doomed.
Do you get out to theater at all for a big screen once in a while or not at all anymore?
@@megamikethemovieman I honestly wish I could Mike. Sigh. 🤔 But it's not all bad. You wait for the DVD 📀 and you save money. 🤔 And if it's not on DVD, Amazon PV is helpful and portable. 🤔 All you need is a laptop or tablet. 🤠
@@eternalhalloween1 Nothing wrong with that. At home viewing has plenty of positives. Do you know if your laptop upscales the DVDs at all?
@@megamikethemovieman My tablet, no. But then I didn't expect it to. But having a DVD player knocks out that complaint. My laptop DOES. Now my 9:7 " PRO obviously has no DVD player. But STRANGELY enough, that has a very sharp screen.
I buy 4k now region free, I had to import the abyss as it was banned in the UK, due to one scene nor being cut.
All 4Ks are region free right? Do you import a lot of the times? How’s the shipping costs?
So it’s streaming that you think prevented Blu-ray’s from being the dominate disc format?
@@tigerblue42 Sorry about TH-cam doing that. Not sure why that happens sometimes.

How many DVDs do you have in your collection now?
I subscribed with all notifications. I personally have a little redundancy with my Blu-Ray and DVD media. Thank you movie friend, much appreciated. Do you prefer playing movies on your tv or at your work stations?
Blue-Ray is better. No doubt about it. It wins for the best quality.
But is it more practical? I'm leaning towards no. DVD wins for being more cheaper, adaptable, and convenient.
I would pick DVD over Blu-ray for those reasons. Also because I watch on a small widescreen.

Interesting point, haven’t really thought about that before. Do you think it’s because they want to distinguish between the 2 in the retail stores?
@@megamikethemovieman Maybe, but that could be fixed by colors. When the cd,dvd or bluray are standing on a shelf, that side were the text is, the band and album name or movie title is, on the top could a color code be, yello for music, green or blue for xbox / playation, and orange for bluray.
If you look at your own cd's (if you have those), you can see them apart, just think about what 5 or 10 mm from the top is a color.

Too fake looking and too blotchy alotta times!!!!!! Devils diary is only dvd and it looks beautiful!!!!!! I own it!!!!!!! I'm happy to have charmed on dvd and season seven on my phone!!!!!!! Great picture quality and the colors that were filmed by its original just look so more smooth and better quality!!!! If you have a phone like mine it ups the res for dvds better!!!!! Same with games nowadays they look crap the remasters and all is like dvd quality but on a better screen!!!! Sorry to say.......blu rays are too fake and home filming look like it's that bad!!!!!
