Being inside that Whales belly with the water rising over your head, or that beachside boogie stage more importantly were the jaw dropping stand outs imo! 120 HZ and HDR for regular games is actually pretty cool. I'm not sure I'll use it much, but it definitely gives me more to think about. Wasn't even a consideration with the first PSVR
They could even display regular games in 3D, with a depth-based approach like Depth3D for ReShade on PC. True geo-3D would be too expensive though as that would require the GPU to render two separate views.
I just hope they will give us some environments for the theater mode, I used it on psvr 1 and it was cool but felt like you're just floating in front of a big ass screen. Give me a good cinema or home theater little environment and that's how I'm playing Spiderman 2 and FF16.
And this will ALSO be able to 'simulate' watching a 'projector' sized image, while still getting all of the Contrast/HDR benefits of a Direct View TV! I LOVE my projectors, but just due to how the technology works, they will NEVER be capable of displaying PROPER HDR. There's just no way to create any 'dimming zones' or 'turn off' individual pixels on a projector, since they all depend on a 'single' light source, and it's not possible to 'project pure black'...

The early OLEDs weremt as good as these. OLED in that context were lower resolution pentile displays with less color accuraccy. At the time LCD was needed for higher refresh rates - and way cheaper too.
I wish my Quest 1 was LCD. It's OLED os pentle, making effective resolution lower than 1080p. It also has no color advantages since all games just keep grey colors.

I don't have a PS5 and no interest in buying it. But as a PCVR enthusiast, I really hope PSVR2 is a huge success. I feel like it could be the saviour the VR space need in order to start getting more AAA vr games such as Half-Life Alyx. I hope Alyx comes out on PSVR2, thus increasing its reach and fan base, motivating Valve and other developers to make games just of that quality.
I would actually want a partnership where alyx comes out for ps5 but also ps vr 2 is compatible with steam (as they would be the likely contender of gaining the partnership) if I could even get that 2d game mode for the PC oh man..

Apart from being a massive jump from the original a big selling point for me is that some games are VR crossplay between PS5 and PC, a massive benefit to us all and such an awesome bonus. There are some funny videos of PSVR2 and PC VR users experimenting with PSVR2 on Pavlov, PC users were pretty stoked with the abilities of the PSVR especially the eye tracking which moved the characters eyes in game lol.

Great review as usual. The only thing I would have added is the price comparison with the high end PC VR headsets you mentioned. Because sure $550 might be a lot, but a comparable headset in PC costs more than $1k
Any comparison would be dated really quickly. The PCVR market is in transition right now. There are already the first mid range micro OLED headsets (Bigscreen Beyond) announced and I expect high res 4000x36000 per eye Micro OLED headsets (such as valve deckard) to be out before the end of 2023.

I don't know everyone else but I use digital foundry videos as sleep sound music. Every word relax in tone and cadence and when they speak about something tech I almost think that I understand something and then only then I fall to sleep. Thanks.
Personally I never had a PS-VR 1 because the couple of times that I tried it I didn't think the quality was up to snuff. I can understand why the launch line up consisting of a lot of remasters wouldn't be the most appealing list to some, but it's actually helped sell me on it more. Getting to play the definitive editions of the few games I really wanted the last headset for, as well as a few new ones. Very excited to try this for myself.
PSVR1 was low quality but it's was also insanely cheap which meant it sold very well. PSVR2 is high end VR, but it's barrier to entry is too high to make it mainstream, as well as the PS5 being expensive and increasing in price, I doubt it will help make VR mainstream. And it's a shame because Sony has an oppertunity since meta is dying in incompetence and only selling overpriced headsets now, while the quest 2 showed what's possible with cheap VR
@@EBCHILL2 yea, the PS4 was never originally planned to have VR, so the connect box was needed to expand the IO. But PS5 had it planned early and has IO bandwidth reserved for it
Yup, that's a sweet deal right there. I've played a LOT of it and I'm still super amped for PSVR2. No Man's Sky is going to be even more beautiful, and GT7 is very likely going to be the best looking racing game out there in VR. Those two alone make it worth it for me, VR is so good.

Short of being tethered, this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for in a VR headset. Really, really wish it was compatible with PC as I don't own a PS5. Really hope modders can get it to work.
I already loved the controversial white and black aesthetic of the console unit but it looks even better now paired with the matching VR2 wearables. Very futuristic.
Yeah, probably pick one up shortly. I like the fact that you can play standard games and use the headset like a normal monitor. I assume you'll be able to watch movies as well.
This is what i love about Sony. All these companies made a VR headset and they are way more expensive while being on a similar level qualitywise. This is a no brainer for VR fans and honestly, its the best you can get for jut 550bucks.

I've been using mine for a few days...it's not as crisp And sharp as i was hoping. Everything looks sort of hazy, especially around the periphery. Looking straight on looks ok, but definitely not OLED crisp, and the edges of my vision, especially in theater mode, are blurry and ultimately i would describe they entire look of the screen as fuzzy. Maybe it's super sharp compared to other headsets...or am i missing something here?
I feel exactly the same. Cinematic mode is a joke. The loss in details and resolution is massive even in comparison of a 1080p TV! I tried all the settings possible.
Seems like it has some key improvements over the Valve Index (which I own) for half the price. Only bad part is it's exclusive to Playstation. High resolution HDR OLED display, haptic feedback, eye tracking, only one cable, no need for base stations, it's definitely an impressive package. I appreciate the review, John!

I noticed a LOT of grain on the image, that is not crystal-clear at all. In facts it is a lot less clear that for instance the quest 2, and therefore the image is worst. I think it may come from some treatment on the fresnel lenses. As the noise pattern moves with your head and not with the image this is very easy to see ingame and hard to forget.
Great video John! As someone who has only tried PSVR1 and Oculus Quest 2, I've really appreciated how you explain how this headset is different and the different types of experiences more powerful hardware can enable!
I was on the fence about this until I started seeing how good the gt7 VR impressions were, and now that you've reminded me about the theater mode and how it's capable of 120hz while having a high pixel density, HDR and an OLED display I'll definitely be getting this as a TV/monitor if for nothing else
Very impressive, my favorite game of all time is Astrobot Rescue Mission... so PSVR2 looks like it will bring more GOTYs to the platform, can't wait to see what the future holds for this amazing headset.

Honestly, I don't think VR necessarily needs massive amounts of games. What it needs is "killer apps", Games that are so amazing that you will go back to hem, over and over again. I have played ~600hours on my Reverb G2 and I have spent most of my time with Half Life Alyx + mods, Beat Saber, Skyrim VR + mods, and Assetto Corsa... even after 3 years, I am not tired of these four games. For PSVR2 I think the current "killer app" is actually Grand Turismo 7, a game like that really has infinite replayability if you love racing. No Man's Sky can probably also be a killer app as I can see a lot of people on Steam having 500+ hours invested. Games like these only become more engaging in VR and preferably if you play with other people and have a great time together!
They still need the killer app, Gran Turismo 7. Driving and flying gamers are the biggest adopters of VR. It would also be a huge plus if the next armored core and ace combat receive vr.

It doesn't seem like this tech could be too much cheaper for what it is, at least at the moment. All around this looks pretty darn excellent, especially when compared to the original. With more games, a real question mark, and pc support, whether official or community based, this seems like a big win in as a hardware product. Sony is in a tough position where they can only 'force' so much software to be on PSVR 2, and the rest would theoretically come from good sales of the hardware...which likely sells better with software support. I don't envy being in that spot, and appreciate PlayStation pushing their tech with no guarantees of success here.

Hardware wise it literally checks everything I've wanted from a VR headset. Foveated rendering and Eye tracking being the most niche parts of my list. Foveated rendering seemed like a no-brainer for performance to be and EYE TRACKING is a GAME CHANGER. It looks so natural to be able to navigate menus and gameplay scenarios with by using sight to inform intent; way better than awkwardly trying to point your whole head at a giant menu button, instead boxes can be very small and you still maintain extreme precision with your selections.
@@JerryFlowersIII YEP! The eye tracking seems like a major change to the way you can interact with a game, and I bet we'll see a ton of games using it in some amazing ways!

Nice to see REZ get a mention and update for PSVR2, I’ve been playing that game since the PS2 and love it, it was so ahead of its time.
10:16 "It's completely wild shooting down enemies just using your eyes" Oh man, Insomniac needs to make a Cyclops VR game with this tech after they are done with Wolverine.

@@Alex_Logan22 Superman's laser vision would work well with this tech, though..
120 HZ and HDR for regular games is actually pretty cool. I'm not sure I'll use it much, but it definitely gives me more to think about. Wasn't even a consideration with the first PSVR
Dont forget you ca watch 2D content as well. So if they implement a theater mode, it should be pretty amazing.
They could even display regular games in 3D, with a depth-based approach like Depth3D for ReShade on PC. True geo-3D would be too expensive though as that would require the GPU to render two separate views.
@@AnimeUniverseDE that is a really good idea. It could be added by patch individually to selected games, optimized for best settings/performance.
I just hope they will give us some environments for the theater mode, I used it on psvr 1 and it was cool but felt like you're just floating in front of a big ass screen. Give me a good cinema or home theater little environment and that's how I'm playing Spiderman 2 and FF16.
Why wouldn't you use it much?!
Just being able to play flat games with the OLED 120hz display in theater mode is a huge plus because I have a pretty average 4K TV
Is this a confirmed feature?? Thats so cool if so
@@floppydysk Yep.

We also get a 120hz HDR OLED big screen cinema as a bonus...that alone would cost a lot more than $500! I am a first wave pre-order and it was for that reason I ordered...the vr gaming aspect is the bonus for me :)
Big screen mode for movies and games sounds amazing to me. Any idea how big we can make the screen?
@@alexk9295 On PSVR it was effectively upto 220 inches! But that was actually too huge for me, I found the 150 inch virtual screen the more comfortable...but to answer your question...enormous! When I played Star Wars A New Hope blu ray (another benefit btw as Quest and PCVR don't play blu rays) on old PSVR, I was transported to being a mesmerised six year old boy at the cinema when the star destroyer swept overhead in the opening scene...I felt the same sensation that I never felt again when watching the movie on TV or even the cinema re-releases. PSVR cinematic mode gives a personal big screen sensation. With PSVR2, I expect the experience to jump a whole new level...but sadly, I will miss the 3D blui ray playback that I enjoyed on PSVR/PS4 console. I hope that SOny will release an update soon for PS5 3d blu ray playback.

@@theycallmemrglass wow, 220" is crazy! I wonder how pixelated 1080p will look on that, or even on 150". It should be leaps better than PSVR1 given that it has 4x the amount of pixels, is OLED and has HDR.
@@alexk9295 yeah the sensation of scale compensated for the relatively lower resolution but being OlED and HDR also compensates. It all depends on how much you value resolution over scale, some prefer Res, others scale. I fall in the latter :) but given reviews say screen door effect is minimal on psvr2 iexpect the cinematic mode will be great for all

Appreciate the detailed review! Got mine pre ordered. No one else mentioned the 2d screen mode so I'm glad they've nailed that!
OLED is so important for immersion in VR. That Oculus went the lcd route after the oled quest 1will forever baffle me
The early OLEDs weremt as good as these.
@@Wobbothe3rd wrong. There's never been a time OLED was worse. Even the ps vita OLED blows away any LCD and that was 2011
Quest 2 is over all playstation users will sell the Quest 2 now just like me
@@HugoStiglitz88 wrong. A VR headset is not a PS Vita. The low resolution pentile displays and low refresh rate of early OLEDs were big downsides of the original Quest.
Great work from you John! As always.

You're awesome! Lol. That's the attitude we need. No VR wars. We all need to be together.
I would actually want a partnership where alyx comes out for ps5 but also ps vr 2 is compatible with steam (as they would be the likely contender of gaining the partnership)
if I could even get that 2d game mode for the PC oh man..
Its going to come down to Sony first party and 3rd party deals in order to lead the charge , and with Sony's connections in bungie and rockstar I'm hoping for either destiny 2 in vr or a new mmo RPG by bungie for it and for rockstar to port they games to vr
That only happens if we support the hardware tho, begging for it too be supported on pc isn't going to get you better pc games if you don't invest in the psvr 2 in the first place
Well said, good consumer and healthy community attitude. I have the original PSVR and will most certainly be getting PSVR2.

Leuk spel goed verhaal. Mooie graphics.
No man sky:
I preordered it. I haven’t bought into Vr since the rift CV1… it was my favorite thing for years. This is the perfect next step

Loving the "top of head" camera shots, really does a great job simulating what the player experiences in terms of 1:1 movement. Great review! Cannot wait for mine. Already reinstalled RE Village, GT7 and got the Horizon bundle.
Looks very interesting, I absolutely loved the original PSVR when it came out, it was my first VR headset and I was blown away, then about 4-5 months ago I got an Oculus Quest 2, and I was blown away again with how much sharper it was and how much better the tracking was, and now another big upgrade like this? Personally I never had a PS-VR 1 because the couple of times that I tried it I didn't think the quality was up to snuff. I can understand why the launch line up consisting of a lot of remasters wouldn't be the most appealing list to some, but it's actually helped sell me on it more. Getting to play the definitive editions of the few games I really wanted the last headset for, as well as a few new ones. Very excited to try this for myself.
Yeah for me just using psvr1 was a pain with the passthrough box and cables, the simple usbc cable connection is a huge upgrade

One another great thing about this
IT HAS A FAN PREVENTING FROM FOG AND SWEAT

They missed to say if 3d blurays still work. That was one of the nice features I used in psvr, it gave you that imax feel... at home
PS5 has no 3D Blu-ray support so no it won't work
They will likely add 3d blu-ray support in a firmware update later on, they added 3d blu-ray support about 3-4 months after the PS VR release on the PS4 back in 2016
Honestly, I don't think VR necessarily needs massive amounts of games. Games like these only become more engaging in VR and preferably if you play with other people and have a great time together!
mine arrives tomorrow can't wait
Excellent job Sony. 👏🏽 👏🏽👍🏼
They still need the killer app, Gran Turismo 7. Driving and flying gamers are the biggest adopters of VR. It would also be a huge plus if the next armored core and ace combat receive vr.

For what it's worth, whilst you might be lacking in VR discounts I'm just jealous of where you reside. I pop to the Netherlands when finances afford - beautiful country!
@@BearlyRegal I’ve tried ordering from the UK, but seems there’s no shipping options to here. I’m also worried the EU might heavily tax me for importing goods from outside EU as they are known to do. All good though, there might just not be any sales here because there aren’t any units perhaps.
Why no mention of the mura effect? I wish I'd known about this before purchasing,
this looks like such a great product honestly. this is the first time I've seen a VR kit and thought "damn, if I had the disposable income right now I'd buy this immediately", and I've never been that keen on VR. unfortunately I am poor
You'll always be poor unless you change your negative mentality.
@@PSYCHOV3N0MThat isn’t a negative mentality, it is just an admission of present fact.
Excellent excellent review John. Very informative and detailed. I highly appreciate it.
Isn't it dirty or smudges on the inside of the lenses at 3:08 (top-right corner of the left eye)? My unit came with the same issue and now I am not sure if it's on the inside or should I just wipe harder, as you haven't mentioned any issues with your review unit.
Brad Shoemaker was so young in that clip with John Carmack
It doesn't seem like this tech could be too much cheaper for what it is, at least at the moment. All around this looks pretty darn excellent, especially when compared to the original. With more games, a real question mark, and pc support, whether official or community based, this seems like a big win in as a hardware product.
Sony is in a tough position where they can only 'force' so much software to be on PSVR 2, and the rest would theoretically come from good sales of the hardware...which likely sells better with software support. I don't envy being in that spot, and appreciate PlayStation pushing their tech with no guarantees of success here.
So impressive, thank you John!
The best VR by a long shot! Amazing tech definitely a game changer well done Sony.
Yes ordered mine over the weekend, can't wait!!
18:00 is the best deal for me. I have pre ordered them. I want VR games of course but also a theatre, being able to see (without the VR capabilities) any game in a 'giant screen" is awesome.
I value your opinion on tech the most John. Absolutely buzzing watching this! (P.S. I've also used the Fez soundtrack in many of my videos in the past, great taste)
John, in many European countries it's available in electronic stores like Media Markt etc.
Even in Canada it's available from Amazon, GameSpot to name a few.
Great review. Comparably I’d say this is pretty cheap compared to headsets of a similar quality on PC.
There are no headsets of a similar quality on PC. Literally, not even for $1500.
Truth!
I wasn't going to jump on day one, without PC support confirmed, but man I've just been surrounding myself in info about the headset and couldn't resist. My pre-order is preparing for shipment and I'm so excited for next week.
@@JerryFlowersIII Indeed. It seems like a great package, now if only Sony added PC support in the future...
@@JerryFlowersIII YEP! The eye tracking seems like a major change to the way you can interact with a game, and I bet we'll see a ton of games using it in some amazing ways!
550 bucks is not very expensive for a vr headset. Words like that are only said by vr newbies
Mannnnnn I want this headset but I heard some people complain the image quality looks like 720p at best, and that's annoying lol
Looks way better than 720 give a try
Great as always! Except, and I could have somehow missed this, what did you feel about using it while wearing glasses?
That's my concern also, especially with a pretty small sweet spot (since glasses force you further away from lenses and make the sweet spot even smaller)
@@floatplane exactly. I’m shocked he didn’t bring it up at all, and he’s wearing glasses. Great review but also a rather large oversight, I think.
Great review as always :) I’m very impressed, I passed up on PS VR 1 but this looks like a game changer. Might be tempted once more software hits.
Did you play VR on PC, if not theres plenty of software already. But ofcourse... Your wallet, your choices 😉
Look up Pavlov on PSVR2, it's basically Counter Strike/Call of Duty in VR.
Try watching Crowbat's video on it titled "How different counter strike vr can be"

Yeah briefly a few years back i forget the game but it had similar hand controllers to PS VR2, it was some robot shooting game, the immersion was pretty impressive. I also tried Mario Kart VR at an arcade and that was amazing but it did make me feel quite ill afterwards.
This is the only channel that I would ever listen to regarding this topic.
In Australia it can be purchased from quite a few places.
