Something that should have been mentioned is that some units can apparently have slightly more or less Mura than others but every headset will have some of course. I think the biggest difference is how much people actually notice it. IMO and experience from friends: the more time you have spent in VR (specifically PCVR like Index) the more likely you are to notice it.

With today's technology on lenses and panels, mura will be present for all VR headsets at some degree. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. Some aren't bothered by it as much.
Hopefully the technology gets better in the future. Most people who are used to VR already know about this and are accustomed to it already. Most VR newbies will probably notice it and it just depends on how sensitive they are to it.

I feel like most reviews, including this one, overlook how simple and great the IPD adjustment and eye tracking process is. As someone who occasionally has friends/fam/gf over for shared VR gaming experiences, it is great to know that we can all visibly check the placement of their eyes and tracking accuracy with just a couple of button presses. No more guesstimating and taking the headset off to adjust (Quest 2) a measly 3 settings.
Now we can visually confirm the optimal IPD and tracking without the user taking off the headset and easily make minor adjustments without much interruption. Also, not needing to buy / set up bay stations is great. Great review though, as always. I'm pretty happy with my PS VR2, and was also bothered by the mura - though thankfully got over it quickly; and friends don't even really notice.
The only major thing holding this headset back IMO is lack of PC compatibility. I'd gladly put away my Quest 2 for good, or sell it - if it had Steam VR support. One can only hope there will be a day.

VR is niche for certain, and coming from daily driving a Varjo Aero, I can understand how technology wise we haven't made much progress recently. But take this, the Quest 2 put VR onto the map for most people and made the market a LOT bigger. Now we have Sony making a viable option for regular consoles. More eyes on VR, more people seeing what's happening, more companies who might want to get in on this.
I say "Mainstream VR" for a very specific and literal reason
It's a big step in making VR more _mainstream_ .

I've found that the PSVR2 is for sure a good headset. The biggest drawback honestly is the mura but like Thrill mentioned you can get over it and its not always game breaking. I feel the best reasons to invest in the PSVR2 is for the haptics, adaptive triggers, oled screen, and potential VR game support. I personally was already sold after seeing how gorgeous resident evil 8 feels in it. I've also started playing Pavlov again and haven't had that much fun in that game in a very long time. From what I've noticed with VR veterans is that it does reignite that VR excitement and has done so for me.

      @robinv1485 ปีที่แล้ว

The biggest drawback of psvr2 isn't the headset imo, it's the console itself. Luckily an adapter for PC is coming soon. I expect when people super sample the resolution of their games on PC like we do with every other headset, it will show what the headset can do. I mean, don't buy it for pc obviously, even with the adapter, there's no support so chances are it can stop working with pc anytime, plus there's better things around that price, and even if they don't come with foveated rendering, you can put an addon later (yes even in the bigscreen beyond you can fit it in). But if you already have one and a PC I'd try it just to see the difference.
It would be cool if the PS5 Pro could push gt7 and other games to at least 90 fixed fps to avoid the reprojection and have a smoother feeling but didn't happen with psvr1 won't happen here either

First with the screen door affect on the Vive and Vive Pro. Then the HP Reverb G2 it was a limited max IPD, which was just too small for me, and Windows Mixed Reality (horrible). The Vive Pro 2 was dissapointing, compaired to the older Vive's, they reduced the max IPD from 74mm to 70mm, the lens sweet spot was too small, all of this made it useless for me. Now I use a Pimax 8KX, which is just big and still has some very small screen door affect, is fiddily to set up, but otherwise is fantastic.

I just watched a video earlier of a VR reviewer that really kinda fixed the Mura issue. They had green filter sunglasses and putting those on eliminates the Mura effect almost completely. It darkens the image too and changes the color balance somewhat but I don't know how much but they said any game like resi evil where the Mura is terrible becomes completely playable again without any mura effect. The oled panels have more green elements than the other colours and adding a green filter reduces the green intensity which seems to fix the issue. I think we need people investigating this with different filters at different strengths to find a sweet spot that minimises loss of light while maximising reducing mura then make some kind of snap on lens product for the headset. Or maybe Sony themselves could add a fix for this and reduce that in software. Also game developers who are aware of this issue could balance the colors themselves to help with this. Its something I think should be investigated for those who are doing things like considering or returning their headset because of Mura bothering them so much. It may help them enormously. I haven't tried any of this, I'm just passing on info from another youtuber. Their channel is ALTVR for anyone wanting to go watch their video about it.

lack of a pancake lens is the biggest mistake of this headset. After using the Q3 for PCVR you can see how amazingly clear pancake lens makes the image.

Didn't expect to see my Reddit post on here. Haha. I'm happy to report that while the controllers are sometimes awkward and do cause some hand fatigue in certain games (especially if you have to continuously hold in the grip buttons while walking around with the thumbsticks), at least it's still playable.
I played Pavlov for 45 minutes yesterday, and my hands ached by the end, but that's my fault because I refuse to use toggle grip for the guns. It throws off my reloading if I do.
Edit 2: I played Pavlov for 3 hours today and by 2 hours in my hands were killing me. I kept dropping guns etc… I’m going to tweet at them to see if they can add hybrid grip like RE8 has.

The PSVR original had that Mura effect as well - and when I switched up to PCVR, the Reverb G2, I really - really did not miss the color richness and deep black levels nearly as much as I was glad to be rid of the Mura. Until the PSVR2, I wasn't even aware this was a wider problem in OLED screens. My only experience with OLED before was the PSVita - which had an absolutely gorgeous display. I had just figured the PSVR used sub-standard low-quality screens. Now I'm reconsidering my purchase of a PSVR2 pending release of PC official/community drivers. I still really like the single-wire interface and eye-tracking in a mass-market headset, but it's really not much of an upgrade compared to my current headset... and a downgrade in many areas.
I guess it's really just a waiting game to see what Valve announces with the Deckard, but all indications so far seem to point to it being more of a Meta competitor, rather than an Index upgrade.

I love pretty much everything about this headset, besides the reprojection in the games I've tried so far. It's almost a deal breaker for me. Anyone know if this can be corrected in software or firmware updates? Also my right controller has to be reset upon every startup of a game, so that's an annoyance.

They're using a system similar to SteamVR or ASW on PC which is terrible. They should have built a system like AppSW on Quest that actually works. Without getting into the technical details, this would require more work from game devs but would have eliminated all the issues people are having. Making the change now would require the games to all be patched.

I think you missed one thing that personally has me still considering a PS5 + PSVR2... The thing that blew me away with the Quest/ Quest 2 was the "power on and play" factor. Not sure if that makes sense. I'm a PC VR user since the original vive and love PC VR. However, being able to just turn the thing on and get right into VR without any messing around with all the typical PC VR quirks (you know what I mean) was a breath of fresh air. My wife, who is not tech savvy, actually started venturing into VR games by herself on the Quest 2 because it was so easy. To me PSVR 2 might be the best of both worlds. Quick, easy start up but also beautiful visuals. What do you think?
    Edit: Spelling lol

Weird, the Mura effect doesn't bother me at all, it's super subtle except for some scenarios, and even then if you don't look for it, it's a non-issue. My only "disappointment" so far has been the graphical fidelity of the games. Not the display, mind you - some less demanding or well-tuned games like Song in the Smoke look SUPER crisp. But then you have RE8 which yes, looks really good in terms of textures, models and effects. But... the resolution can get really low. I think they use some kind of dynamic resolution so there are times when I'm like this is great! But more often than not you see something that looks straight from PSVR1, low-res and lots of jaggies and shimmering which detracts from the otherwise great graphics. Hopefully as time goes on developers will learn to better utilise the foveated rendering and we get AAA games running at native resolution

If being binaural (blurry or perfect) it is blurry due to the Fn film they put on the lens modules to mask the SDE due to the pentile diodes. Read up on it! Same res OLED has a lot more screen door than the same res LCD. This stands out in VR due to the distance.

GT7 in Vr is so realistic. All your real life driving instincts kick in. You have to use your head to look in the mirrors and use real spatial awareness when overtaking as everything is in full 3d at life size scale. It's a stunning experience and far more like real life driving than sitting on a sofa playing a game. If you love racing you need to try this.

    I already have a Quest 2.
But I did pick up this headset. I did instantly notice the mura, but I can get over it. It's not noticeable to me when actively playing a game. So that's good.
I really like it. I haven't touched my Quest in a week. I am actually considering selling it off. As I'm not super interested in Meta's plans.
However, I am holding off for now to see where this PSVR2 is going. I am very happy with it, but it's future is a question mark.
As long as the game library grows sufficiently, I'll be happy. There's enough to keep busy for now, but they need to get new games out fast. Be that ports, hybrids, or new.
Beat Saber is coming thankfully. That's my favorite VR game, and it's kind of weird that it's not there already given how popular it is.

My first VR experience was with the original PSVR. For any potential first time VR users the MERA effect shouldn't be a problem like he stated in the video. The first PSVR had a major screen door effect & I initially noticed it. Then my mind just deleted it & I was shocked at how much I was immersed into games. I didn't realize how prominent the screen door effect was until I purchased a VR headset for my PC. I think that if this is your first VR experience it will be a really good one. The system just needs a bigger library which should come. Just know that high quality graphics are nice but in a VR environment your mind will fill in the "blanks" even in very simple blocky games. Reminds me of the Matrix quote the mind makes it real.

To be fair on build quality, i think a bit of flex and squish is better than not. Ive seen way too many Oculus controllers broken because they're solid so one point of contact can shatter the ring, whereas if there was some give and squish to it, it'd absorb impact better.

    • @VallianceRS
      @VallianceRS ปีที่แล้ว

But I agree. PSVR2 is cool tech, but its too expensive for an entry into VR for console owners, as they already have the stuff to drive it. But Quest exists, and is cheaper, and works with a PC, or by itself, and isn't nearly as restricted in game ecosystem.

I didn't know that in a horror game, when you blink, they can use that to make the scene changed. Then I totally realized that someone could make a Weeping Angel Doctor Who experience. Every time you blink, the angels get closer to you. If done right, it could be a terrifying experience!
I really hope the Valve Index 2 has eye tracking. It adds so much more possibilities with VR. From Foveated rendering, which will help increase frame-rates, To using the eyes as an input device, to creating crazy scary games that use your blinks to make a scary game totally terrifying!

The original Oculus Rift CV1 used OLED panels, right? Did it have the same issue? Maybe it was masked by the screen door effect from the low pixel density, but I don't remember the Mura there. I'm not sure why this is an issue with all OLEDs. I suspect over time that this can be fixed in future OLED display panels.
