Janes Combat Sim, Fighters Anthology was 1997 or 8 (which coincidentally predicted the Russian Crimea invasion in the F14/F18 US navy campaign). Still Tears of the Sun itself was based off of true events. Only it was a Canadian JTF-2 team operating in South America that went against orders in order to save innocents, not the SEALs. Still a great movie and despite inaccuracies it left me with a feeling of desperation and struggle and ultimately admiration for a real life special forces team that actually did disobey orders in order to save lives.
I was a pilot in this movie in the SH-60B helicopter at about 14:25 mark in this video, the one farthest out from the camera. There were actually 4 SH-60B's from HSL-37 airborne but I think you only see 3 in the film. We shot for about a week in Oahu. Got to hang out on set. Bruce Willis was really cool, spent time hanging with the aircrew and maintainers. His daughter was a girl scout. Each year Bruce bought thousands of boxes of girl scout cookies and sent out to the fleet. The year prior my ship received a crate of the girl scout cookies, complements of Bruce. That is how we struck up the conversation with him - he was stoked to meet someone who actually received his cookies. Two people from my squadron got a couple seconds of face time on film, the C.O. and an aircrew Senior Chief.
Hey! Nice to meet you, I am currently a maintainer at (what is now) HSM-37. Been with HSM-37 for about 2 years. This movie, along with Jurassic park III, are definitely still well known throughout the squadron. Getting to be a part of such a cool production sounds like so much fun. It's nice to meet another Easyrider from back in the day. Take it easy, sir.
As someone who works in the film industry, I think I understand what happened with the Master Arm Switch/Spin Recovery Switch. There's an old filmmaking rule called the 180 degree rule - to help the audience stay oriented spatially when they watch the film. Since the Hornets are moving right to left, filming the incorrect switch maintains that same general orientation. If they had popped the camera over to the other side of the jet to get the Master Arm Switch, it would suddenly appear to the audience that the jets are moving in the opposite direction. They probably realized the correct switch was on the "wrong" side of the cockpit when they were boarding it out (or worse, possibly on set), and rather than add shots (money/time) to solve the continuity problem - just called art department to dress up the Spin Recovery Switch, since MOST people have no idea what they're looking at. That one, from a filmmaking perspective makes sense to me (at least why it happened). The randomly armed/not armed thing is frustrating though, because that's basic continuity - since they're already using CG they'd have the resources to add them in if budget/time allowed. I dig these videos! Thanks for making them!
this is a fair assessment of why there's so many problems with this scene...film-making is a different thing than reality (how things are shot, etc)...
Director: so that's this master arms button? It turns the weapons on, correct? It's a bit... boring no? It's missing some urgency, flair.. some of that.. danger close" Liason pilot: well, we co.. Director: What does that one do! Love the yellow, it screams danger!" Liason pilot: Ow that one. *Flips cover* That one doesn't do anyth.. Director: IT'S PERFECT!
Not disagreeing that its stupid, but it must have been an aesthetic choice from the director in that he wanted to shoot from the jets' left for subconcious psychological reasons (so they move from right to left), so for continuity you have to make the in-cockpit shot from the left too or it'll look weird
@@maj.romuloortiz7832 that would require rework on the physics, missile damage and tracking methods, at that point you might as well play War Thunder or DCS with Ace Combat 7 mod
It's obvious that the aircraft landed at a FARP operated by Navy Reservists who are NASCAR pit crews in their civilian jobs. Down, 3.27 seconds, airborne again.
That was shot on Oahu, I was working traffic control during that sequence. The F/A-18's did a low pass through the valley before they detonated the pyrotechnics. Then they brought in the SH-60's to fly in, land, and take off. The part of the road I was on was slightly higher (pretty wide valley) than the F/A-18's, and it was an awesome sight to see.
This movie would have went from a 5/10 to 8/10 if they put in the Airwolf soundtrack and had the final crescendo right when the 3 choppers entered the frame 😆🤣
I used to be a JTAC from 2008-2012 and I am always rolling my eyes during these scenes! Most of the time they are sooooo wrong with everything.... Worked a lot with VFA-106 and the squadrons at Luke and DM...@mover maybe even with you?
I guess you gotta give them a little credit for not making it look like the planes are in afterburner 100% of the time. So often movies have fighters with flames coming out the tailpipes at all times.
Isn't this when they should be in afterburner? At least when transiting from the ship to the general area, not nessearily while making the attack or when returning to the ship.
My favorite scene in the movie is when Tom Skerritt is talking to Bruce Willis on a satellite phone from the deck of an aircraft carrier (that is active) in full dress uniform. The scene is so ridiculous that I burst out laughing (I saw this in the theater). I couldn't believe that they put that scene in, it boggles my mind how stupid that looked.

The F-18 bomb scene in Clear and Present Danger suggests that a high altitude bombing can be good if done right. You should consider reviewing that, kindly.
Yes! I've been waiting for this one! Sadly, one of my favorite Hornet scenes has been ruined...😀 Could you also do the scene from The Rock? That's a fun Hornet scene (and it says "Air Force" on the side of the planes, so I'm sure there's gotta be a lot to criticize!). Thanks for these, Mover!
Apparently the Hornet's featured in this film are of the VFA-204 "River Rattlers" Fighter Squadron. You're old Navy squadron if I'm not wrong? I may be!

10:55 Another nitpicky thing with the "spin recovery" shot is the HUD on the MFD seems to indicate a >10 degree angle of descent like they're diving into or climbing out of a bombing or strafing run, not flying level treetop. I cracked up at the "go do something with your life". Matched up perfectly with lead's body language looking over. LOL

You'd think that to be in the SEALs, let alone get assigned to this mission, Bruce and his whole team would have been qualified JTAC. Mainly though just surprised the pilot kept his mask on for his close-ups.
As for the targeting, they told the F/A-18s that the bad guys were between their smoke and the treeline. So, if the fighters saw people between those spots, they were bad guys.
One of the best reviews yet. Completely deserved. If movie production would not go out of their way to misrepresent reality then Mover wouldn't have to ruin the movie.
There's a couple of good scenes in Thirteen Days. One low altitude recon mission with a couple of F-8s, and a missile evasion scene with a U2. Would love to get your take on it. It's a good movie too, it idolizes JFK too much, according to Robert McNamara it was Tommy Thompson who suggested the final "deal" that prevented the invasion of Cuba, not JFK. JFK was resigned to the invasion when Thompson said "Mr. President, I think you're wrong." Anyways, let us know what you think about the aviation scenes, they seem to be reasonably authentic.
These are super fun and interesting. I always find it interesting how Hollywood screws things up, even when to do so takes more work than it would to just get it right. My dad was a big gun enthusiast (not gun nut) and he always hated it when he saw guns in movies that didn't even exist when the movie was supposed to be taking place. Most people would never notice things like that, but I found it interesting. I hope you keep doing more of these! It would be cool to see you do some cop stuff too since you spent time as one. My dad and brother were both cops and they would always see screw ups in cop shows and movies.
I absolutely LOVE your videos. I always pick apart aviation movies. I was an AO and attached to VFA-151 Vigilantes in Lemoore for 4 years and I just love it when I see Hollywood get the weapons or weapons systems completely wrong. I noticed that during the cockpit shots they were sitting in an ACES II seat which the Navy doesn't use. They should have been SJU-17s. Please keep the videos coming.... I love 'em!
Continuity on combat aircraft in Hollywood, even in films like Topgun, that have access to USN and USAF almost never happens. Film editors don't know the difference between a CBU and an AIM-120. They don't think anyone notices. And the few that do notice don't make up an important part of the film going audience. It costs a lot of bucks to pay the Navy to load out a jet for a film and fly it (assuming they'll even do that!). It costs considerably less to use stock footage.
Looks like the director of the 1980ies eries The A-Team took on this movie. The 'crack commando team' (with one of them - BA - afraid of flrying) that shot everything up and the bad guys always stumbled out of a carwreck rubbing their heads as if they had a hangover or something.
I'm a retired officer of the Italian Army, former JTAC and teacher at Joint Air Support School, so I'm quite familiar with what you said. Can you suggest any good movie where CAS is shown in a realistic way? Thanks.
I've always liked tears of the sun the story is definitely great in my opinion haven't seen it in years but I'd love to see you react to flight of the intruder at some point anyway keep up the great work🤘
at this rate, I'm gonna know how to fly an F-18. I would've loved to be a pilot but the recruiter said me needing contacts disqualified me, even if I got lasik surgery.
I get why some people would be irritated when they see errors in movies, but Hollywood has been like that for decades. As long as you look at it as just entertainment, then it’s okay. It’s just a movie. Of course you’re going to detect tons of errors and other stuff that don’t make sense.

JFK was resigned to the invasion when Thompson said "Mr. President, I think you're wrong." Anyways, let us know what you think about the aviation scenes, they seem to be reasonably authentic.
Hey Mover; have you reviewed "Bat*21" as of yet. If not; I think that one would be interesting.
I forgot about that and isn't their alot of Air to ground talking?
@@maj.romuloortiz7832 yes.
That would be good and Flight of the Intruder
I love these. Your serious reactions are great. Thanks for doing these.
And the
few that do notice don't make up an important part of the film going audience. It costs a lot of bucks to pay the Navy to load out a jet for a film and fly it (assuming they'll even do that!). It costs considerably less to use stock footage.
"Go do something with your life" ... Title of your sex tape! Seriously though, that line made my day!
The funny thing is how much DCS WORLD taught me allowing me to see how much is wrong here
HAHAHA great review
. The helicopter scene was mint!
Looks like the director of the 1980ies eries The A-Team took on this movie. The 'crack commando team' (with one of them - BA - afraid of flrying) that shot everything up and the bad guys always stumbled out of a carwreck rubbing their heads as if they had a hangover or something.
Day off ... sitting down with a nice scotch and some mover ruins movies!... Cheers!
"Ok, oohhhkay, whoooboy, alright, SOOOO..." LOL, just found this YT channel, love it so much!
I'm a retired officer of the Italian Army, former JTAC and teacher at Joint Air Support School, so I'm quite familiar with what you said. Can you suggest any good movie where CAS is shown in a realistic way?
Thanks.
Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Apocalypse Now, and Jarhead could qualify as what you’re asking for, Sir
Utterly brutal, fantastic vid Mover, loved the exasperated reactions!
Funniest MRM in a while. Had me laughing out loud!
I always enjoy when Mover explains a bit more when it comes to whats going on and what they are doing.
I've always liked tears of the sun the story is definitely great in my opinion haven't seen it in years but I'd love to see you react to flight of the intruder at some point anyway keep up the great work🤘
Tears of the Sun is based off a Canadian JTF-2 mission.
On the spin recovery switch, you can even tell they put a sticker over "SPIN"
Thanks for the video!!! This movie couldn't even get the M68 Aimpoint mounted correctly, what can we expect?
Calling in 9 lines was so much fun in the Army as a Medic! The helicopter pilots were amazing at their job.
at this rate, I'm gonna know how to fly an F-18.
This movie could've been so awesome. I remember seeing the great commercials, then watched it a few years later and was terribly disappointed 🤦♂️ pretty sure the military adviser/armorer had to have been an ROTC student that had some limited video game experience 😄
99.999% of people could give a shit less. It’s a movie, get over yourself
