Hey Ryan! listen to me!... These kinda videos are what we crave, simple, reflective, based on your true emotions, showing life & your habits without much editing & graphics! These videos are my way to go for morning coffee & journaling, I learn but most importantly... I enjoy the soothing nature of your videos, it just calms my brain & gives me a novel perspective to gather life into order! NEVER STOP MAKING THESE VLOGS & VIDEOS!
Stoic Secrets To Living In Accordance With Nature' has reshaped my life philosophy, aligning my actions with natural principles. Grateful for the profound peace and clarity it brought. A must-watch!
I watch Ryan's videos every weekend day before work-and this is probably one of my favorites. Particularly the part about his neighbor wanting to barbecue and feed his former pet goat and babies to the dog......When you die...Someone will eat you...That's funny and also touching.....(Also that rather then judging the neighbor-he found humor in it).
I loved this one. I don't live in the country, but I keep a few hens for eggs and grow vegetables in my garden. It's not much, but it helps keep me grounded
If it wasn't for our dog, I wouldn't understand that life Ryan is talking about. I can definitely see the idealness of that life. Something to think about for one's life.
If ego is the enemy, and the enemy is an obstacle, and the obstacle is the way, then the ego is the way! Or something like that. As the great stoic philosopher Mac Davis said, “It’s hard to be humble, but we’re doing the best that we can.”
I appreciate your insights and stoicism. But I have questions. Is there virtue in hunting? Is there virtue in causing harm to an animal if it is not necessary? You could photograph these animals and still practice many of the same skills. Or are we taking their lives for selfish reasons? "If it's not right, don't do it." Is it right to take the life of an animal against their will if it's only for our pleasure?
I think anyone calling himself a stoic should look into the effects of our consumer choices on the environment. And thus rationally consider the pros and cons of veganism.
@stevengreen11 - Although I eat Vegetarian myself, there are two sides to every coin. Here, in Ohio, we have many, many deer. If we didn’t have hunters cull the deer herds, some would starve in the winters. The deer would severely damage the farmers’ crops. There also would be a substantial danger to human life, because of the deer jumping out in front of traffic. Some years, they need to hire sharpshooters because the hunters didn’t reduce the deer population enough. Although I am not a hunter myself, there are good reasons for keeping our wildlife numbers from overpopulating.
thinkers such as Arne Naess, the founder of deep ecology, emphasize that all life has intrinsic value, regardless of the use it can have for humans. These kinds of thinking do not place nature as a backdrop for human activities, but as an equal player with whom we must learn to live in harmony. That is what is missing in this video. Ego is the enemy here, pun intended.
We are hunters. Its in our soul, in our heritage, in our DNA. Its one of the most natural things we can do to connect to our spiritual base. Denying it leaves you incomplete. You literally cannot understand what I mean until you've experienced it.

There would be substantial damage to farmers’ crops. Plus, the danger to human life increases with deer jumping out in front of moving vehicles. Some years, when the hunters don’t reduce the deer herds enough, they need to hire sharpshooters.
Common, Ryan, there's plenty of spam/advertising in your newsletter. I even consider unsubscribing, because too often I find myself rolling my eyes upon opening your email wondering what the sales pitch is going to be today.
Ryan killing animals is nothing to do with stoic philosophy. This was really disturbing episode. Followed your every email and podcast for three years.
Why? Its in our heritage as hunter/gatherers. Denying a piece of yourself means you will always be incomplete. I've never appreciated life more than when I process an animal to feed my family. I acknowledge the animals sacrifice and cherish its gift of life sustaining energy.
There's no bad in hunting. Human started hunting for their existence since their inception. Even animals hunt other animals(Food Chain in Biology) for their existence. It's natural. It gets bad when gone beyond limits.
You lost me at hunting. “Learning from” nature by needlessly killing? I’m more supportive of reducing the suffering of all living things as best as I can, and I believe that’s a stoic belief as well, but correct me if I’m wrong about that.
I think a Stoic living nowadays should indeed be very aware of the ecological situation we are in. And the number one cause of biodiversity decline is still hunting.
Assuming he and his family eat meat, what's the difference between him killing a wild animal or a farm raising and killing animals? Either way an animal dies. At least the wild animal didn't have a lifetime of suffering.

From what I've seen in other videos, Ryan reads spiritual text but he doesn't read it for dogmatic acceptance but to internalize golden nuggets of wisdom. Spiritual and philosophical learning can be found anywhere and everywhere. You can look at Jesus as just like Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Confucius, and all philosophers throughout history. They were people who pursued a higher understanding of existence and shared their wisdom with others.

Man I resonate so much with Ryan Holiday
Going for a walk with no phone has been a delight
A lovely video, and how the donkeys follow you is so cute!
Appreciate this perspective about nature. I dont have the farm, but as an aquarist my fish tanks bring this perspective.
Thank you Ryan Holiday.

Wonderful video! Thanks for sharing your ranch.
thank you for sharing about Stoicism! Really enlightening
My energy is focused on the collaboration of this Stoic energy and my faith in Jesus Christ....so glad i found this information 😅

I read the email "The Daily Stoic" whenever I go donate blood or plasma.
It keeps me grounded and it's a good way to pass the time.

Curiously, I am assuming that philosophically Ryan, or the Stoics in general, believe in free will.

Don't agree with the fishing and hunting segment but great video otherwise
Hi! How is hunting living according to nature? I'm not a hunter. Never killed a chicken. I'm confused about this.

exactly, the video is still too anthropocentric
Ryan - make sure a company doesn't put up a cell phone tower near your place in the country. EMF radiation is very bad!
Turn to Jesus brother, trust me, try reading the Bible for a week at least, what could go wrong?
