+Armored Knight yea, you can see how in reverence he was in of Shatner. For most part, Shatner was trying to play it cool, probably normally wouldn't have like him but I'm willing to bet pine won him over.
Chris Pine is so polite and humble. I love his approach here, he doesn't act like a big movie star and I have always liked that about him. I hope he never gets big headed because he seems like a genuinely good guy
Just saw Chris Pine all dressed up in NYC on opposite side of the street from a group of adoring fans calling out his name. Chris finished what he was doing and left his group, crossing the street to shake hands with the fans. His smile was genuine and he earned a smile from me for being a classy guy. Well done Captain Kirk!
The hole new cast is awesome, I only wish they had a history worthy of the original movies and not the over hipe non sense action movie plot both movies had...
I was very skeptical about Chris Pine playing Captain Kirk, mostly because I've adored Kirk since the series first aired in Trinidad back in the early seventies and adored Shatner also. But he did a fine job of it. I wasn't disappointed.
I loved how, when Spock Prime meets young/alternate Kirk, he's so happy (though of course he doesn't show it) and treats him exactly the same, immediately calling him "Jim" and assuming he had come to rescue him.
Chris is like... beaming with respect when he approaches Shatner. Awesome to see. He did a great job as the new Captain Kirk given the expectations (in my opinion)
One forgets that Chris's isn't REPLACING Shatner, he's the younger self and it's marvelous to see how Chris embodies what Bill becomes in the character. All the actors were marvelous as the younger versions of their characters.
In a few days we will see. A year ago I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you. Shatner carved into that role and made it what it was. It's an icon that spans a series, movies, and popular culture. Nothing can touch that. But the new movie seems to be well constructed, and perhaps there is room for a second interpretation.
Chris seemed real in awe and real respectful of Bill, as he should... I think his portrayal of young Kirk will do it justice and the new movie seems fitting ot the old series but with a newer edge to it to attract new fans... it can only better the franchise... I dont think itll hurt it in any way but they really should have had a part for shatner in the movie other than that I cant wait to go see it this friday!!♥
I dont think he said "and you are..." he walked up going "mr. shatner..." he obviously looked very nervous and humbled to be meeting someone as iconic as Shatner, and I"m glad to see Shatner was very gracious towards Chris Pine.
I thought Chris Pine was awesome as James T Kirk-as were the other actors as Bones, Scotty, et al. But there will never be another William Shatner as James T Kirk! Always loved Star Trek in all of its versions-especially TNG as a runner up!
Has anyone else noticed that even thought Bill has never been a Brad Pitt grade, A-List star every actor or regular person who meets him are just in awe. I've seen people meeting Brad and Angelina at the West Edmonton Mall and they didn't act anywhere near as star struck as people are around Bill.
They both acted like gentlemen, and good for them. I just wish the blonde had moved aside a bit so we could have actually seen the meeting. I loved the movie, but I grew up with you, Bill, and you're the one who made Kirk what he still is today. It'd be great if they could find something for you in the next one.
Mr. Shatner sir, I am a big fan of yours, and I must say, I was annoyed, and ticked that neither Paramount; nor JJ Abrams asked you to be a part of last year's Star Trek movie. Through your role as James Kirk, I learned how to fight. Not in a physical sense, but in an moral, ethical sense. You taught me, that in order to do the right thing; sometimes rules and regulation have to be bent in order to be a good example and leader to others.
I saw an interview with Shatner once and the question came up about Chris Pine playing Kirk. Shatner, gave Pine a lot of praise about his interpretation of Kirk. Hard to believe Shatner is in his 90s.
Chris Pine looks like a great choice to play Capt. Kirk..I also heard the other crew members were also well cast...May 8th is almost here!!!!! I can't wait to see the new Star Trek movie on the big screen!!! I 'm already anticipating another JJ abrams Star Trek...hopefully with William Shatner in it(the greatest Captain in the universe)!!!!!
Just seen the new Star Trek film. Chris Pine was incredible as Kirk. A perfect tribute to yourself Mr Shatner. May you live long and continue to prosper
I love that he addressed him with such respect. "Mr. Shatner." Nicely done Chris. You can see how terrified and nervous he is....I mean...it's The Shat. I'd be shaking.
We can all enjoy the new movie, and what these young actors can bring to those classic characters we grew up with, but all fans new and old should remember this: Shatner MADE Kirk the sci-fi icon he is today. Watch The Original Series. That's the true beginning of the greatest space adventure of all time. And, in the words of Captain Kirk, "Not one hundred percent efficient, of course... but nothing ever is." Also in the words of James T. Kirk, "Buckle up."
The whole crap of being rude to Chris all because he isn't William should stop. Of course he can't act like William because he isn't William. William can't play like Chris and Chris can't play like William. Grow up !
It is not so much Chris Pine, although I think he is a mediocre actor, it is the role sucks. All the movies have sucked, and the JJ Abrams movies have sucked really bad.
Chickenbeek Star Trek debuted in 1966. It is now 2015. That makes me a 49 year fan of Star Trek. It's just sad that clueless junior fans that grew up with everything pretty much at the same time and do not understand the real point of Star Trek will accept anything, including the inferior all action, but no head and no heart special effects driven nonsense that is out these days. You might can say you liked there, but there is not a single dimension of the new Star Trek that the word brilliance applies to. The real Star Trek, like the science fiction of its day is something that just doesn't really exist any longer. I don't know what you see when you watch Star Trek, but you don't really get the context. I am glad you like it, but you are settling and being taken advantage of because you really do not know what the series is all about.
Chickenbeek You know, what you think, and what is, are two separate things. I read about JJ Abrams who said plainly he was not a Star Trek fan, and did not know much about it. There goes your idea that it was made by a fan at heart. If you want to think that or rationalize that fine, just don't force me to buy into it. They did not do an excellent job in any way. The goofiness of Star Trek, thought most of the series, was "overlook-able" because the plots ( in the original series especially ) aspired to send a message and have a point. In the original series that point was made by some of the best writers, and specifically science fiction writers, such a Theodore Sturgeon and Harlan Ellison. The Original Series was subversive, it was progressive, it went against and challenged the social thinking of the time. You probably do not realize that even though you say all kinds of stuff about Star Trek - you don't get it from the perspective of its original existence. You can see that through most of Gene Roddenberry's work, but Star Trek was special - a unique series. The re-boots have been more than brain dead. It is not a question of having to be action oriented to sell tickets, the movies are stupid, and they have generally come out, sold tickets, and gone away without a thought. Chris Pine is not Kirk, neither is Spock, or any of them, because the whole original idea, and the foundation and point of Star Trek are missing. Kirk was nothing like the over-blown obnoxious brawling slut that Chris Pine models for the viewers. It's not Pine's fault, he's just playing a shallow vapid role for money. In all the time since the Original Series, with all the advances in special effects, and the new ideas in technology and science fiction, not one of the movies or series have ever managed to remain true to the original series, even as the original series fades because of its dated production values and writing. That is why IT is the classic and the brand, not any of the other shows or movies.
Chickenbeek The Next Generation was the worst, except for maybe Deep Space 9, or most of the movies. You just do not get it. The fact that you can stomach and even like a Kirk and a Federation where he can go from a brawling drugged out slut, to Starship Capt ... that you could suspend your disbelief for that kind of nonsense shows that you care nothing for logic and rationality. The movies sucked, especially the reboot. Perhaps there is hope for the next one since JJ Abrams is not directing it, but I don't have much hope. Good for you if you like, you can waste your money and time on it then.
So true Chris has done a great job and the fans have to understand that young people now like Star Trek because of these actors and this reboot - they have helped saved a franchise but the way old fans go on about Chris or JJ or anyone else involved is silly. Don't they know it keeps the legacy alive
Oh and one last little thing: Michael Dorn did work with Shatner also when he played Kirk's "public defender" in the1991 motion picture Star Trek 6 -The Undiscovered Country....that much I also remember FYI.
i have to congratulate the producers and the writers of the new star trek. the two movies with Chris Pine complement the old star trek movies beautifully. i found them very engaging and entertaining. the cast complement each other and are all humbly great in the delivery of task at hand. i can not wait for the movie to come out on dvd.
I love Star Trek, intelligent and sober science fiction, interesting texts and even very well-represented moral issues on canvas, both the show and the movie! And the two actors are amazing, of course Mr. Shatner will always be the Original Kirk! But I love the new movie !
You know? I'm an old Trekkie and I was fully prepared to dislike Pine's turn at Jim Kirk but he's changing my mind... slowly and surely. He's awesome as a young Kirk with a life very different from the old timeline's Kirk. In the new movie, especially, he's given Kirk a heart and soul that I adore.
Pine managed to capture Kirks, mischievous energy, amazingly. I was distraught at the idea of Kirk played by a different actor, but he stayed true to the soul of Kirk, while honoring the great Bill Shatner in the process. Must be said, though...for all his charm and charisma, the character wouldnt exist with Bill. He's a treu legend in every sense of the word. Bravo!
I loved the movie, but I could not stop thinking about Shatner, he really needs to be brought back in the next one, and they should some how tie in saving Kirks Dad and Planet Vulcan. They brought Spock back with geniuses I'm sure they can figure out a way to make this work- he should get an entire story line as spock did in this one... he is the captain and has been the captain for all these years, He's my hero 4 ever =0)
I know everyone holds their reservations for seeing this movie because of Chris Pine. But I just saw it a few hours ago, and not only Chris Pine but the entire cast impressed me. The movie itself was pretty damn good! There will never be another Kirk like William Shatner. But Chris Pine makes an amazing Kirk all on his own. Don't knock it til you see it. You might be surprised. c;
Everyone has a Begining, and in Fairness it DID take a Whole Starfleet Security team to take him out. Romulans are like Vulcans, easily double our strength cause Vulcan and Romulus have Higher Gravity than earth. and i think Chris Pine Pulled it off Well.
I am so proud to be able to witness this historic moment. Wow, at what other time in history could we have witnessed such a breathtaking moment? Still, I am beside myself, and we are both in utter shock!
How is Shatner "washed up?" His newer work, like Boston Legal, I think is great. He definitely could have made an appearance in the new Star Trek. You obviously have never watched the great original series. You can't picture anyone else being Kirk after watching 78 episodes and 6 movies of William Shatner as Kirk. I hate when people have such a negative attitude towards anyone who was on the original Star Trek cast. This movie wouldn't even exist if they didn't make it popular.
Having seen the new movie, thinking there could only be one Kirk as in Mr Shatner, I think Bill would be extremely proud of Chris Pine's protrayal, he had huge shoes to fill and I think he was perfect in the role.
Yeah, when I saw the promotional posters that showed Pine as Kirk, I thought it was a mistake, but I think he captured the essence of Kirk well in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Ahahaha, too cute, too cute. Gotta love how he just wants to smile REAL big but he holds it back, practically biting his cheek. He reacts like a real fangirl. XD Adorable. And I -love- the cowboy hat.
Not possible. Chris emulates some of Shatner's Kirk and he adds a bit of his own magic to the part. But Shatner made Kirk the hero he was, with flaws, energy, the works.
Great Movie. Brilliant homage to the original series. Karl Urban was a brilliantly studied piece of acting, Chris Pine captured the young brash Kirk perfectly. I set my mind against the idea of the movie but was pleasantly surprised.
What impressed me about this movie was how the actors look very much like the actors from the original series. Especially the guy who played Spock. He looked almost identical to a young Leonard Nimoy.
The young Pine was very respectful to the Senior Captain...well played sir
+Armored Knight yea, you can see how in reverence he was in of Shatner. For most part, Shatner was trying to play it cool, probably normally wouldn't have like him but I'm willing to bet pine won him over.
He had no choice. He didn't want to get Kobayashi Maru'd
stephen noonan i mean the cage is pretty amazing
Chris Pine is so polite and humble. I love his approach here, he doesn't act like a big movie star and I have always liked that about him. I hope he never gets big headed because he seems like a genuinely good guy
Let's hope he can maintain that "level headeness" and not go all go "George Clooney". Hollywood is a very corrupting environment.
cameraman655 - oooh, what if Matt Damon got the new role of Kirk? Just mentioning Clooney was bad enough...
Yep I Agree
Just saw Chris Pine all dressed up in NYC on opposite side of the street from a group of adoring fans calling out his name. Chris finished what he was doing and left his group, crossing the street to shake hands with the fans. His smile was genuine and he earned a smile from me for being a classy guy. Loved Shatner's Kirk ( will always be my favourite) but Chris Pine did a fantastic job. The whole cast did! (Love Simon Pegg as Scotty!).
The hole new cast is awesome, I only wish they had a history worthy of the original movies and not the over hipe non sense action movie plot both movies had...
+Joanne MacArthur Scotty ( Doohan ) was much taller
Joanne MacArthur you suck
No different than Connery as Bond. Craig does a great job, but he ain't connery
I was very skeptical about Chris Pine playing Captain Kirk, mostly because I've adored Kirk since the series first aired in Trinidad back in the early seventies and adored Shatner also. But he did a fine job of it. I wasn't disappointed.
Personally I like both of them.
They work well in their respective universes.
"Dad? Can I have the keys?"
I have to admit, the cast in the Star Trek reboot was brilliantly and well cast.
aaaand its gone. what a waste of a good cast.
True
Chris Pine was sooooo similar, physically, to Shatner back in the day
@@danroden830 wym?
I think it was great to see them both together.
I loved how, when Spock Prime meets young/alternate Kirk, he's so happy (though of course he doesn't show it) and treats him exactly the same, immediately calling him "Jim" and assuming he had come to rescue him.
Chris has such a fanboy grin in this, I love it! It's obvious how much he admires you, Bill.
Great Person 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That was cool. Young Captain Kirk meeting the original Captain Kirk.
Aw, I can't help but think that's so adorable how Chris Pine seemed very awed by Mr. Shatner's presence there.
Chris Pine will always be my Captain Kirk that bridge crew made me into a Star Trek fan in a time when i thought Star Trek was too nerdy for me.
I have always been and will always be, a fan, regardless of the name that was given to me 7 years after that first episode.
The Shat officially gives Chris Pine the blessing. Epic.
Chris is like... beaming with respect when he approaches Shatner. Awesome to see. He did a great job as the new Captain Kirk given the expectations (in my opinion)

Bill, there's no way you can be replaced, you are captain kirk!
Chris seemed real in awe and real respectful of Bill, as he should... I bet Bill's telling him somethin like: "If you make ONE scratch on my spaceship....."
I dont think he said "and you are..." he walked up going "mr. shatner..." he obviously looked very nervous and humbled to be meeting someone as iconic as Shatner, and I"m glad to see Shatner was very gracious towards Chris Pine.
Did anyone else notice the massive change in Pine when he realised it was Shatner?
Thats respect. And well done to him for it.
Celebrate William Shatner, EVERY SINGLE DAY!
I thought Chris Pine was awesome as James T Kirk-as were the other actors as Bones, Scotty, et al. But there will never be another William Shatner as James T Kirk! Always loved Star Trek in all of its versions-especially TNG as a runner up!

Shatner is one of the nicest and charismatic hollywood people I've seen. Just a very nice man.
I saw an interview with Shatner once and the question came up about Chris Pine playing Kirk. Shatner, gave Pine a lot of praise about his interpretation of Kirk. Hard to believe Shatner is in his 90s.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Khan. Ricardo Montalbán plays KHAAAAN!
Just seen the new Star Trek film.
Chris Pine was incredible as Kirk. A perfect tribute to yourself Mr Shatner.
May you live long and continue to prosper
Shatner is the original Kirk always, but Pine's made a Kirk all his own. I say they're both Kirk.
Kirk meets Kirk-AWESOME.
I love that he addressed him with such respect. "Mr. Shatner." Nicely done Chris. You can see how terrified and nervous he is....I mean...it's The Shat. I'd be shaking.
I'm glad we were able to capture the historic moment of the back of Mrs Shatner's head. Great work cameraman.
Kirk, "Buckle up."
rightly so, he had some massive shoes to fill! I would not envy anyone who had to reprise a role that Bill Shatner made infamous
Chris is doing a great job!
The whole crap of being rude to Chris all because he isn't William should stop. Of course he can't act like William because he isn't William.

WILLIAM SHATNER = THE ONLY CAPTAIN KIRK
incredible.....Bill with 78 years old !!!
my father have 71 and He is more older..
God Bless to Bill.
That would have been a great meeting between them
There. Is. Only. ONETRUEKIRK. Forever and always SHATNER!!!
Grown up, Pine did his jop excellent
William Shatner has been and always will be the real Captain James T Kirk
William Shatner is absolutely the greatest
i have to congratulate the producers and the writers of the new star trek. the two movies with Chris Pine complement the old star trek movies beautifully. i found them very engaging and entertaining. the cast complement each other and are all humbly great in the delivery of task at hand. i can not wait for the movie to come out on dvd.

This shift in captain Kirks time-line is going to be a way bring William Shatner back to life in future Star Trek movies.
I know everyone holds their reservations for seeing this movie because of Chris Pine. But I just saw it a few hours ago, and not only Chris Pine but the entire cast impressed me. The movie itself was pretty damn good! There will never be another Kirk like William Shatner. But Chris Pine makes an amazing Kirk all on his own. Don't knock it til you see it. I think Pine is a great Kirk and I definitely hope to see him on the chair for many many movies in the future.
Well said!
I think the cast and plot is ace.
Its opened up a whole new generation to star trek.
Oh my God!!! I think the sound that can be heard right now is a million Trek geeks climaxing at the same time.
Wow! That's almost as great as the time Chris's Dad introduced him to Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox on the set of CHiPs!
I am so proud to be able to witness this historic moment. Wow, at what other time in history could we have witnessed such a breathtaking moment? Still, I am beside myself, and we are both in utter shock!

"Nice to meet you kid, now let me give you a few pointers on how to be Captain Kirk"
It's great they got these two together even if it was just to say hi and have a drink. They're both from different but parallel universes.
You can see how proud he looks.
Having seen the new movie, thinking there could only be one Kirk as in Mr Shatner, I think Bill would be extremely proud of Chris Pine's protrayal, he had huge shoes to fill and I think he was perfect in the role.
I'm not a big Star Trek fan, but that did put a big smile on my face.
Yeah, when I saw the promotional posters that showed Pine as Kirk, I thought it was a mistake, but I think he captured the essence of Kirk well in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next one.
The birth of a new era, hope the new movie lives up to the hype.
Ahahaha, too cute, too cute. Gotta love how he just wants to smile REAL big but he holds it back, practically biting his cheek. He reacts like a real fangirl. XD Adorable.
And I -love- the cowboy hat.
I'd be nervous meeting the original cast, but it's cool how they've all met and talked with one another. That's how all remakes should be like!
Shatner was way better as Kirk than Pine was. It's hard to replace a legend.
He should have gone up and been like "Captain Kirk! Hi, I'm Captain Kirk. Nice to meet you!"
aww Chris looks nervous!! hehe... this is great, thanks for sharing!! =)
for a guy in his 70`s. shatner looks fantastik!. we all should live so long and prosper.
I would second that! Shatner is a legend but Chris Pine did a great job!
And then the universe exploded , as it could not contain such volume of sheer awesomeness.
Couldn't put it better, myself. Both of them do the character great service.
William Shatner rocks as Kirk!
An interview between William Shatner & Chris Pine would be interesting to see.
Not possible. Chris emulates some of Shatner's Kirk and he adds a bit of his own magic to the part. But Shatner made Kirk the hero he was, with flaws, energy, the works.
"Young Kirk meets Old Kirk at a Hoedown." I do not remember this Gene Roddenberry screenplay at all! ;-)
Chris Pine is the new Kirk. So to Chris remember to conduct yourself like a Starfleet Officer now.
Pine: "Mr Shatner, it's an honour to meet you."
Shat: *pauses* "EEYYYYMM CAPTAIN KEEEEERK!!"
He should have said, "Hi, Mr. Shatner. I'm Captain James T. Kirk.".
Absolutely NO comparison...Shatner IS the only Kirk...period.
Great Movie. Brilliant homage to the original series. Karl Urban was a brilliantly studied piece of acting, Chris Pine captured the young brash Kirk perfectly. I set my mind against the idea of the movie but was pleasantly surprised.
bad audio. I'd love to hear what they both have to say. It would be a GREAT sit down meeting. An idea for you Bill?
epic, epic, epic. i hope Pine can live up to the captain. we'll see soon.
Shatner rocks !
Indeed. The Shat gives Chris Pine the blessing.
YEAH! Why dont they put up longer videos!? sereously!
What impressed me about this movie was how the actors look very much like the actors from the original series. Especially the guy who played Spock. He looked almost identical to a young Leonard Nimoy.
Bill, you need to comment on your impression of Chris Pine now that you've met him.
Shatner should have shouted "IM CAPTAIN KIRK!"
Kirk meeting Kirk? Brain exploding due to sheer awesomeness in 5,4,3,2,1.....
I do want to see it again when time permits.
