Richard Dawkins: I'm a Cultural Christian

  • Famous atheist and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins joins Rachel Johnson to reflect on Easter and the role of Christianity in British life.
A self-proclaimed 'Cultural Christian,' Professor Dawkins tells LBC that he is 'slightly horrified' to see lights celebrating Ramadan in central London during Easter and worries about a 'replacement' in this regard.
He says the construction of mosques across Europe concerns him, and that if offered the choice between Christianity and Islam, he'd choose Christianity "every day."

You're missing how powerful this question is. It points out the priest's own lack of faith. Like Jesus telling the Pharisees you worship with your lips but your hearts are far from me. This question challenges the church in a way that I don't think any family religious discussion would encourage.

How very bizarre. Dawkins has spent most of his adult life regaling against Christianity but now makes the rather awkward shift towards being a 'cultural Christian'. If Christianity didn't exist there would be no 'cultural' context. For a person who worships at the altar of rationality that bit of reasoning seems to have escaped him.

Can you have faith in the core tenants of the message of Jesus Christ, like do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and other parts without the dogma of fundamentalist views which do not correlate very well with the scientific world. I don’t believe in the firmament, leviathans, walking on water, raising the dead, water into wine, parting a sea, talking snakes, talking donkeys, global floods, Semitic storm deities, or even the historical figure of Jesus. I don’t believe fundamentalism captures the core of Christianity. Zizek states the big other died on the cross as well as the figure of Jesus but the meta-narrative live on through the character of Christ (emphasis on Character).
