I am retired now and took up jewellery making as a hobby.I have spent countless hours over the last two years "researching" as many jewellery videos as I could manage.The great majority of them are of an excellent standard and I learned a lot very quickly.But your video tutorial on ear-wires is brilliant.ESPECIALLY that bit with the "cup-burr".Even though I have spent hours and hours poring over catalogues about all sorts of burrs in H.S.S. and Diamond configuration NOBODY ever mentioned the cup-burr and how efficient it is at rounding the end of a wire.Well done and many thanks (and keep up the good work).

I'm a metalsmith/jeweler, been making jewelry for over 30 years. I have never sen the technique before. I don't usaully have to make my own ear wires but I work for a designer that lately has had me having to make them all the time. This is a great little trick. Thank you for sharing it.

Glad you found it helpful! I would suggest making earwires with a smaller mandrel, and longer 'hook' part at the back. If there's not such a big curve at the top, (so they're a bit more like the end of a paper clip and not so much an 'S' shape) it should make them tighter to the width of your earlobe so there's not as much room to spin around!

I know you did this a while ago but I had to tell you, today this video changed my life! I immediately went into my workshop and made a pair and they came out beautiful - used a Sharpie to twist the hook and perfect as I can use the same point every time to be consistent so easy - I just filed the ends with a metal file and hey presto! Perfect ear wires - so happy and working it out I think they are going to cost somewhere in the region of 20p/pair and look better - thanks so much

This is great! My ear wires have been looking a little amateurish, and this is a huge help. I have a cup bur tool - Eurotool, I think - with a file-barrel pin vise. I used this as a mandrel, and the texture helped keep the wire from slipping around. Thanks for the video!

Hey there! Yes! It is the same tool - it's called a cup bur, and they come in different sizes to fit different gauge wire. The bits can also fit in a rotary tool (dremel) so they are very versatile! There is a bit more info on sizes in the blog post linked at the top of the about section for this video.

What type of wire are you using (hard, half hard or soft)?
Does the wire need to be hardened, if not using hard wire?

Thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate that!
I use half hard wire, which is what I always recommend for earwires. If you do use soft wire, you will definitely need to harden it, either before or after forming the earwires. Using a nylon or rawhide mallet on the finished ear wires (on a steel bench block or anvil) will harden them without flattening the wire. To harden the wire before using it, simply pull it straight through a polishing cloth or with some nylon jawed pliers several times until it has a springier quality!
I use either gold filled or sterling silver, which in most cases the half hard doesn't seem to need further hardening after forming the earwires. However, keep in mind that different materials behave differently even if they are of the same hardness rating. If the finished product doesn't spring back to the shape you want it when you stretch it gently, it will need more hardening to prevent it from deforming.

Hey do you have any tips on how to make this earrings stay in place. They always fall off on me even with the plastic stop thing on the bag...they don't fall but move out of place and I have to straight them out through out day or night!!! Thanks!!!!!

Great video! thank you for sharing! I have a question on how to flatten the wire. I tried making these wires myself, but due to the curves of the wire( since it was kept in circles), my ear wires turned out little crooked.. What's the best way to flatten them? should I hammer it( which I read on somewhere)? if so, should I use domed chasing hammer or plastic rubber hammer? or nylon Jaw pliers can do the job?

You can get the cup bur wire rounder set on amazon for under $10: amzn.to/1856ULw This one comes with the handle and a 1.8mm and 1.2mm cup bur. I like these because the burs will eventually wear out and you can just replace them instead of getting a whole new tool!
Use the 1.8mm bur for wire gauges 16-21, or the 1.2mm bur for wire sized 22-26 gauge.

Hi there, thanks so much! In this video I used 22 gauge round wire but 21 gauge is also a great size for earwires. Some people also like 20 gauge for their earwires but I have never tried that size with this 2-at-a-time technique. It should still work but it may be a bit more difficult to maneuver.
