With the basic ear wires, could I also use a rawhide mallet to work harden it? Or will that make the size grow? I don’t own a plastic mallet so this is why I ask.

You can. Rawhide is mainly used for shaping and flattening. But it will work harden the metal. But if you have one, certainly try it out!
