    Just in case this video was not clear enough, IF YOU HAVE A HYBRID generator, you don't need the snorkel kit. You just a new Natural Gas Regulator that connects to the same/existing Propane port on your carburetor. Your choke placement will differ from altitude, settings, and machine. Link in description for kits that you can buy cheaper. Also, shortly after this video, I did paint my gas meter pipes with RUST-OLEUM professional high performance enamel spray paint to prevent rust.
    Now if you have a "gasoline/petrol only" generator, the additional port method or snorkel kit would work best for you.

      Yep, I just got a hybrid generator, designed for gasoline and propane. I just used the conversion kit for my barbecue, which converts the barbecue from propane to natural gas. Just pop the line off my barbecue and popped it on to you the generator. You are correct, you have to adjust air flow with the choke, but it runs great.

      Hey Chris, great video with a ton of information! I was wondering if you ever measured the pressure in your gas line? I’m asking because I have a set up that is almost identical but can’t get the engine past a few revolutions before sputtering out. I’m using a similar regulator but am thinking of switching to the exact model you have to minimize variables. The specs listed for that have a pressure inlet between 9 and 13.5 inches of water column. The pressure in my line is roughy 7.5 to 8” w.c. which is pretty standard for residential gas lines into a home. I’ve also read that the gap on the spark plug should be decreased for natural gas because it’s a “dry fuel” and can be a little more difficult to ignite. I was wondering if you made any other changes that weren’t mentioned in the video. Thanks Chris!

      Yes, but it's strongly frown upon. You have to make what they call "suicide cord" which is like a dryer male to male plug. You also have to make sure you turn off main switch at panel.

      @PeterLawton ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Mr-Chris ... and make sure all family members know what not to do while that suicide code is in use. The simplest demand is, "don't touch it", but in the case of you being away and your spouse needing to get power back on, you could give more details (don't ever touch the metal prongs of the plug -- they are the equivalent of live wires).

      You can, but run the risk of back powering utility power back to your generator should your utility resume if the main is not separated. Too much humor error is in play without proper electrical interlocks.

Following that, I bought mostly the items he provided the links to & converted my XP12000EH that I had already purchased from Home Depot last year. After everything was finished the trial run worked perfectly. Now I don't need to worry about buying gas or propane in canisters, it's now running off the natural gas that runs in my house. Thanks for the video. I could not have done my conversion without seeing what you did.
    I have a DuroStar ep12000 dual fuel.
    It came with a different regulator than your DuroMax (made by the same company). I put a 3/8” quick connect nipple on the regulator inlet. I put a 3/8” socket on the propane hose w/ regulator that came w/ the generator. I bought a 1/2” I’d 24’ hose with 1/2” nipple on one end that connects to the 1/2” socket on my natural gas line & a 3/8” socket on the other end that connects to the regulator.
    This allows me to connect either the NG or the LPG hose to the regulator. I can change from NG to LPG to gasoline in a few seconds. Runs great. Truly tri-fuel.

    Hey Chris, great video. You CAN use your 50 amp outlet if you install a 50 amp breaker in your house service panel with an Interlock switch and a 50 amp inlet plug outside. I did it for about $300. including a 30ft., 50 amp cord. Sell the generlink to pay for the short list of supplies.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trust me, I've looked into installing a interlock, but my breaker box it's not a good candidate for it. I have a "split bus panel" breaker box which means I do not have a main shut off. My breaker box has a series of shut offs not one main shut off. So it will always back feed into the grid. In order to install a interlock, I will need to upgrade my entire breaker box. I live in a DC Metro area and electricians price gouge like crazy for this service. That's how I ended up with the generlink.

    Thanks for the video. I'm a bit late here, of course, but I have the same kit and am in the process of converting a welder/generator for trifuel. I am not a plumber but its seems you already have (had?) what you need to tie into a 3/4" pipe for natural gas supply.
    Perhaps a plumber could verify this, but it seems that you can swap the 3/4" Tee coming off the right side of your meter with the nearby 3/4" Elbow off to the right (leaving the short pipe section attached to the elbow). Then you'd have the 'free' open end of the Tee to attach to your generator feed line with the benefit of eliminating a lot of extra pipe connections - plus look a lot cleaner.

    Instead of disconnecting the propane setup. Just put a quick connect on a 90° brass fitting to angle the quick connect toward the outside of the generator. Buy the natural gas convertion with snorkel kit with natural gas regulator and extra long rubber hose. Put a 3/4"quick connect on the natural gas regulater. You don't have to take parts off to have a dedicated propane or a deadicated natural gas generator. Have it to where you can plug into either one that you need to run at that time and have a true tri-fuel generator. All you did is keep your generator a dual fuel generator.

      I removed it... but you don't have to do it. I have no intention of ever using Propane, but you can just leave it un-piped and reconnect it when you want propane later. However it might be faster and easier to use the new regulator as it's rated for both NG and Propane, you just have to readjust the valve which is easy to do.

    I did my testing with a xp12000eh on natural gas. I got the same regulator and hose as you have. My gas meter is in the front yard, my generator is in the back yard. From the meter, I have a 1inch corrugated run of about 15 feet to a 3/4” manifold. From there I have one 3/4” outlet and five 1/2” outlets. I originally had a 1/2” run of about 12 feet to the bilco door in the back yard. I stepped the 1/2 up to 3/4 and connected the quick disconnect and 3/4 line to the generator. I was able to pull about 5500-6000 watts just fine. I then replaced the 1/2 to 3/4 all the way and added an exterior Stainless Steel Burnaby “gas plug” cover panel and had no improvement from the step up. Overall I am very happy. Running my Sportsman GENTRI9K tri-fuel (rated at 9000w surge/7200w run), I'm probably only getting about 5000w running power, and of course, that won't run the 4-ton central AC.

    Excellent work! Why did you use such a heavy 3/4-inch diameter NG hose? I use a 3/8-inch diameter NG hose (Dozyant, $30 AMZ) to run my Sportsman GENTRI9K tri-fuel portable generator. What's the benefit or differences between using a bigger diameter NG hose? And is it necessary?

      During my initial research and reviewing how to hook up a generator to Natural Gas, it was suggested due to the size of my generator, it was I should have a 3/4 inch hose. However I'm not an expert and it could possibly run just as good on a 3/8 inch hose. Being a novice at this, I just bought the one that was recommended by the supposed professionals.

    I ordered the exact same set up you have for my duromax 12000eh. I’m getting conflicting info on whether this setup will work without the Venturi adapter. Apparently a lot of people found that using the propane inlet didn’t let enough NG fuel in without making the intake larger. Does yours run on a full load with this setup? I ran a 3/8 hose to the carb and am just waiting in the regulator and my plumber to run the NG line so I’m gonna find out soon enough!

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well all natural gas conversions lose about 20% power compared to gasoline. Mines runs most of my house on natural gas connected to the propane inlet. The Venturi adapter really isn't needed in my opinion for this specific type of generator. I also think to install the adapter on this generator, you'll need to cut the frame for it to fit properly . Try it out and see if it works.

    There isn't an orifice change option? When switching a furnace from LP to NG one just changes the orifice in the burner's. Changing the size of the orifice is equivalent to changing regulating pressure ie bigger hole less pressure.

My pressure in the gas line is roughly 7.5 to 8 inches w.c. (Water column). I have a different regulator that I’m thinking is the issue so I was going to buy the same model he had in the video, but the specs on the regulator show an inlet pressure of 9-13.5” wc. I’m hoping 7.5 to 8” will be close enough to the functioning range of the regulator

    • @PianoSoulos
      @PianoSoulos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The gas hose and diameter of the line line is specifically dependent on the HP of the engine you are using, how far the line is away from the meter and how many gas appliances you plan on using with the generator, also, is the line direct from the meter, or are there other appliances on the line. If the hook-up hose is kept to 6' or less, the use of a 1/2" hook-up hose and quick disconnect coupler for up to 18hp engines is acceptable. The point is to have the correct size pipe up to the shut off valve for the generator.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could do that, but the new regulator also works propane too, you only need a adapter fitting from 3/4 to 1/2 or 3/8 propane line. Depends on how intercit you want to be with the this setup, but your idea would also work.

      The only thing I would suggest is buying a Digital Tachometer and a good Multimeterr. The generator has an adjustment screw behind the carburetor to adjust the RPM. You want to make sure that after converting it to Natural Gas it still runs at 3600 RPM. Using a Multimeter, you can verify you are getting 240V at 60Hz. Lastly, make sure you paint your gas meter fittings to avoid rust.

    Hey Chris, I’ve got a question for you buddy. I’ve got the same setup, almost. I’ve got the 13000E- gas only. I installed the US Carb kit using the snorkel and it ran fine 44 hours during hurricane season. Problem was, it did not want to start easily and I was having to get while using the prime button to get it going , but after starting it ran fine. It would either backfire or take like two or three minutes to start. You inspired me to order the 13000EH carburetor from the factory with the propane intake port, like yours has. I sealed the carb and now it won’t start or run. US Carb and Century think the port may be too small or my NG hose fittings are to small, etc. I’ve used full flow large port fittings on everything and it ran fine. The propane port is much larger than the snorkel holes for sure. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks man.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure if this will make a difference, but I remember reading how the Carb needs to run on Gasoline for a few hours before converting to NG. Have you tried running the new carb on Gasoline only? Does this Generator have an auto choke? If so, you might want to check to see if you can override the auto choke when you start it.

The conversion kit requires to run it prior to conversion to seat valves , harden cylinders, etc. I did that and hated that gas was in the bowl over winter so was happy to be replacing it with a dry carb lol. Theoretically seems like it might work. Keeping regulator attached to the main gas hose and having a disconnect for the smaller one to the carburetor. Hello Chris sorry to hit you up with questions, 1. Do you really need a 3/4 inch hose as it is you are reducing the size on the meter from 3/4 to 1/2? I read that you do need a lot of BTU for this generator to handle the load at 9500 watts. Have you push this to the limit? 2. the amazon link for the conversion kit, for that price they do not include the load block, they said on the Duro max XP1200 you do not need it? Have you found that to be true? if your load block pretty much wide open with full choke ? 3. did you run the generator with gas prior running it with Natural Gas for the first time? I read you must run the generator at least 2 hours on Gas prior running it on Natural Gas? let me know what you think. Thank you.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      #1. This is debatable, "professionals" say that for a 18HP engine like this... meter fitting can be 1/2, however they recommend 3/4 meter fittings. The "pros" also say the hose needs to be 3/4. However some users say 1/2 hose and meter works well, while others say it doesn't. # 2. That's right, You don't need a load block for this kind of generator as the carburetor already setup to run Propane and it can run natural gas so long that the regular is adjusted to the correct pressure. I think the load block is only needed for Gasoline only generators. #3. I owned the generator for several months before converting it natural gas. I think I put about 10 hours of use on it and changed the oil before the conversion.

      You can try closing your choke and trying different positions to see if that helps. Honostly I think you should remove the snorkel and connect the new regulator directly to the carburetor like I did in the video. If you want to switch back to propane you can do so by using the new regulator with a propane adapter fitting. Essentially you don't need the old "stock" regulator since the new one works with both natural gas and propane. I think the snorkel is the problem not letting enough natural gas into carb to work since it already has another port connected to it . The snorkel is only meant for generators that are gasoline only.

    From what i've heard, running on CNG or LPG results in the engine running cleaner from a mechanical perspective (fewer deposits left in the engine).

      Definitely much cleaner than gasoline, but less overall power. When I change my oil, it's significantly lighter in color than when it runs on gasoline.

      This is hard to find. I am 100% sure what the exact one you need or will fit, but these are the two I was able to find.

    One, you think a Y or T and valves would work to switch between LPG and NG? Also have you run it for any significant time that there is no issue with combustion temperatures that might effect longevity that you've seen?

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think a Y or a T valve would work to switch between LPG and NG... the only condition is that you will need to "re-adjust" the regulator fuel ratio when switching between LPG and NG... but as you saw in the video, its easy and quick to do. The longest I have run this on NG is 4 hours, and I haven't taken a temperature reading to confirm this... but subjectively, I feel it runs cooler than Gasoline. The radiant heat from the exhaust/muffler running on NG feels a lot less than when I run it on Gasoline.

      @@Mr-Chris well I was just going to go with 2 separate regulators so it should be okay. Thinking a little 2 to 1 block like a little manifold with either ng from the house or propane from the tank thru the stock regulator that has no adgustment

      @@Mr-Chris and further research says the both LPG and NG have cooler flames so it shouldn't hurt it though be aware of higher cylinder pressures at times

    I plan to do this on my Westinghouse WGEN12000DF portable generator (dual-fuel gasoline + LPG). But this Westinghouse generator has an automatic choke. You said that you had to run with your (manual) choke wide open to run on NG. I wonder if my auto-choke is going to let me run on NG?

      Have you tried it?

      @@Bryan-hd9fs No. Ended up not getting the Westinghouse. Sticking with my Sportsman 7kw/9kw tri-fuel w/ manual choke. Runs everything I need including 2-ton AC.

      This Generator is almost 3 years old and this is still running great. I don't use this generator often as it's a back-up in case of power outage. I did this conversion to Natural gas several months ago and I tested it out last week. It ran the entire house including my central AC while running on Natural Gas. Even though it has low amount of running hours, I still change my oil every year and keep it connected to a solar battery tender on the original battery. This thing is built very well and starts right up.

      Chris Thanks Chris.... I just got the same unit for our pending Fire Season in Calif. and I just didn’t like the idea of dealing with the Gas issues & multiple Propane tanks.
      Very much appreciated your posting your videos 👏👏👏

    i converted my XP9000IH inverter type to tri fuel by using a Y valve on the pipe coming out the carburetor, one side of the Y goes to the existing propane regulator, the other side of the Y goes to the natural gas regulator, if i want to go back to propane i just switch the valves on the Y back to propane, I ran a 4 ton AC unit with a soft start on it no problem on natural gas

    What’s wrong with your 30 amp?.. I have a 30 amp interlock kit I can run my A.C and one stove burner,and basic lights,tv ,fridge and freezer and no problems..1600 sq ft house with 3 ton unit.. I think what you got works fine, my biggest worry for you is the pipe on the meter being so long it might crack sometime maybe stick block of wood between to take some stress off of pipe..how big is that generator? I think you did a good job ,natural gas is my next project just done the interlock was easy and works great..

      Nothing wrong with 30 amp, but it would be nice to have a 50 amp transfer switch. This Generator is 18HP, 12K watts surge & 10K running. I don't keep the natural gas hose connected, but when I do connect it... I now move my grill into position to make sure to the hose rests on top of it to take weight off the meter.
