      Sir,
      Thanks for sharing this was very incite-full.
      Question: seeing how easy you made it look converting a gasoline to propane. Is it possible to modify to work with an “HHO” fuel source? I’ve seen videos where they use drinking water mixed with an electrolyte (usually baking soda) and a battery of 14v to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen is then used as a fuel source.

    I have installed this on my Ryobi 2300 inverter generator. I actually run it off natural gas. Installing a gasoline shut-off valve to the generator was the only extra step I had to do. It runs well. They say you lose some power with natural gas and propane. Maybe 20%, but I do not know how to test that. Because of my work schedule, I love that I don't have to worry about refueling it. EVER.

    • @johnnysweekends

    I have an older us carburation/Moto snorkel propane kit on my Yamaha 2800. I did this back in the early 2000s. I have the block that goes in front of the carburetor instead of the snorkel. With the block at least for mine it will not run on the eco, it's good to see yours will with the snorkel. I plug mine into the house, and with running a swamp cooler refrigerator and freezer TV internet certain led/florescent lights I went 6 hours on a 20 lb 5 gallon propane tank and still had some left in it. It will also run my heater but my heater is propane in the house. Now the 2800 does have a hard time starting to swap cooler you have to do that first and then add everything on. That's cooler has a hell of a starting load
    Anybody cares click on my name I have a couple videos of the generator running with the house.

    The modification is shown and executed very well but I have a critical observation to make. You Americans are for functional practicality but we Italians also like (in addition...) a pleasant aesthetic. In short, I don't like seeing the pressure reducer attached to the door and drilling it too! I would have preferred to install it under the generator where there is the basket with the wheels, at the pressure reducer an elbow fitting (90°) for the gas inlet... and a protective casing.. For the rest.. 👍 😊

    its always good to have backup choices LPG has 38% less energy thn gasoline propane is normally alot higher cost per gallon 4.6 gallons should be a full fill on a 20lb cylinder but many underfill only way to know is weigh it propane is 4.24 lbs per gallon weigh cylinder then subtract tare weight of cylinder ( stamped on cylinder) i find alot only fill 15lbs of propane
    propane is better overall for engine because it goes in as a gas and dont have cylinder/piston
    wash down caused by gasoline

    Interesting and easy to install. Overall, a nice job. Yes, you will use more propane / NG than gasoline and that's because those fuels have less BTUs by volume. OTOH, those fuels do burn cleaner and don't go bad with time. (stale gasoline anyone?) That said, my primary concern with any of these conversions is invalidating the gen set's warranty (your call there) and the UL listing. Basically, the UL listing is about the unit being tested as "safe for it's intended purpose, as designed by the mfgr" You make changes / modifications on the unit and the factory's liability is no longer there. (I.E. burn the house down, blow yourself up, etc)

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree but much better then the kill your self DIY videos going around for NG. Straight line to the green and no regulator. Meaning if the gen shuts off, the gas still flows and if your asleep or not around your creating a bomb for you and your neighbors.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnnysweekends .... all UL approved gen sets have a second means of automatic fuel shut off via an electric gas solenoid AND a demand regulator. If the engine dies (low oil?) the gas is also shut off. The demand regulator you have *SHOULD* shut the gas off if the engine dies but this does NOT have a secondary safety.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The DIY videos that are going around for converting a gen to NG is a valve on the outside of the house. Then a extension line ran directly to the generator air box in front of the carb throat. Your turn the gas on by the valve then the generator on and control the mixture at the hand valve. That’s it. That’s what people are doing. There is no safety there. So if the gen shuts off for any reason the gas supply is free will. It will bleed out of the air box and everywhere.
      This is what is going around on other videos.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnnysweekends ... I serviced gen sets for 25 years and have seen many (bad) things, but that's insanity! The style you feature has been around for decades and at one time was approved, but that was before people got law suit happy.

    I've installed a few propane kits. I will not use another motor snorkel kit out of WV. Didn't fit motor snorkel rubbing the fuel bowl and had to remove then engine didn't want to run. Also down the road if the motor snorkel rubber piece falls in the engine it could damage and lock up the motor. Hutch mountain, synergy, century fuels and a few others have propane kits that are a lot better than the motor snorkel deal. And when I talked to motor snorkel they just wanted to sandwich out the motor snorkel with longer bolts. That's not good as small as these bolts are that are holding the air filter on and with time good chance to strip or break off even with loctite on bolts.

    Your Title said "TRI" Fuel. And you sure made it use Propane perfectly. Great!. But I want ONLY NG in my home when; we lose power.. So why didn't you show us how; it works when using NG? Huh?
    I NEED it! Thanks.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to ask a little more politely.
      I didn’t receive a NG connection kit. Which can vary depending on your home. Which you should have someone hook up if you T off a line from the gas feed. I’m not going to show you because I don’t know what your doing or your hookups. So liability wise it’s not in my best interest.
      And NG has a lot less btu’s then propane and even more so then gas. It’s like 5 gallons of NG to every 2 of gas and 3.5 ish for propane…… roughly.
      I showed how to install the kit and that it works on gas and propane and NG won’t be much different but a adjustment will be needed depending.

  • @cheaptick
    @cheaptick ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did this... The gen had problems starting and running. What nobody stressed is that the gas fuel requires a hotter spark and you may have to close down the spark gap. So that got it running on LP gas although it sputters on sudden load increases. Then I tried to run on NG and it is total crap. Now I have a high performance kart racing coil coming to see if I had a marginal ignition system. Also I have heard that these engines can have too tight of valve lash making the compression marginal. For me this hasn't been as easy as the videos.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว

      Propane I didn’t have a issue. But yea close the gap if you need to and sometimes one hotter plug depending where you might be. I dont do NG much because I dont have outages for days on end.

    • @cheaptick
      @cheaptick ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just gapped the standard plug down to .018" and on LP found it now will pick up a sudden load from no load nicely. Even ECO mode. I have a hot coil and plug for when I resume testing with NG.

    I like this. The only thing of consern to me is gas leakage either through the intake air filter or the exhaust.
    In a scenario where the generator for some reason shuts off. Will the propane escape through the intake filter?
    Also, in a scenario where we have low load or varying load. Since the propane provides constant flow and gas pressure, will unburnt gas be pushed right out the exhaust?
    The generator will vary the gasoline consumption depending on the load. The modified system, I'm guessing from what I saw, doesn't. Gas leaks can be pretty dangerous specially around electric systems.
    Lastly, the plunger style bleeder could start to leak overtime.
    Overall I like this conversion. But understanding the risks and the system limitations is a must.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This type of regulator works more opposite. Flow from the bottle closes the diaphragm. Vacuum then opens it to allow flow of the propane. So when generator shuts off the flow stops.
      Now sure over some years that back primer button could possibly start to leak. But like anything prechecks should be done like most things once in a while. Hope this helps

There is a tiny screw (Bolt) that I don't know its use either. I noticed you did not use the flat washers. Where exactly are they supposed to go? My kit did not come with a grommet, but I have one. Why locate regulator that low where it could hit something when rolling around. But great video thinking of putting one online for home use.... Because can store propane in a couple of 100 lb tanks for years, and not have to worry about gasoline every 8 hours.
    I would worry about improper fuel setting and lean operation shortening the engine life. Propane already cause engine run hotter than gasoline because it's already vaporized at the tank , atomized gasoline vaporizes in cylinder and provides a small but measurable amount of cooling

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, fuel is a cooling agent for the upper cylinder. With propane it seems to be more finicky with the load dial. Now I did try to go towards the rich side a little by a 1/4 turn. Will this help…🤷‍♂️
      As far as the regulator I already relocated it to the rear panel as the side would get in the way of storing it places. Much better there. Still low but I’m not traveling around with that unit and throwing it in trucks. Just gets used for back up or small things.

    While this is an awesome video, one should point out that if you don't already have this generator, Duromax has their XP4500iH generator. As the name implies, it has 4,500 starting watts (1,500 more than the Honda) and 3,600 running watts (800 more than the Honda), runs on both gas and propane (I don't know anyone who hooks up a permanent gas line to a portable generator, but I guess some do), all for less than half the price. While everyone knows just how outstanding Honda generator engines are, the Duromax comes with a 3 year warranty. Had I done more research, I would have bought a different generator than my Honda 3000is. The problem with the Honda 3000is is that you need to run it frequently, at least once a month, or the carb will gum up. Even if you turn of the gas supply and run it dry! I bought the generator for emergency power backup and seldom use it. I wish now I had bought a dual fuel generator instead. For. $2500 you would think you could get a generator that didn’t need to be babied and run all the time. Not impressed with my Honda and I would advise others to look at other models.

    another question, how can you tell if the propane tank is old and purged of air?

      Most times you wont see a NG generator that small since BTU output is so low. You would have a 2500 start 1800 run on gas, 1600ish on propane and NG would be like 1200 maybe. I would take the propane tank to a service center if it’s old and have inspected, and they can also answer the other question better. And yes smaller tanks can freeze the regulators quicker in cold temps. Normally from my reading a higher flow regulator is needed and say a 40lb tank.

      @MittyNuke1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like Johnny said that’s the exact purpose of this kit. Also this will shut down the gas flow when the generator shuts down which is very important. There are some videos on TH-cam showing how you can run a generator by taking the gas line to your stove and manually dialing the air to fuel ratio. That works if the load is constant, but if you’re actually using the generator to power anything , the load is almost never constant, and also, the gas flow will not stop unless you manually shut it off in that case. That’s why a zero demand regulator like the one in this kit is very important.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very and good point! With out a regulator you are letting gas virtually flow freely which is extremely dangerous for you and your neighbors. Unfortunately not everyone is safe and uses Good judgment.

She doesn't use gasoline, so I'm thinking that it wouldn't be unrealistic to have a situation where the power goes out and the gas she has at the house or in the tank is 2 years old. Gasoline has 116000 btu's per gallon. Propane has 92500 btu's per gallon. You will have to consume the equivalent of 1.25 gallons of propane for every gallon of gasoline. Thanks for the vids. We ran a lot of ng and propane engines on the farm. Compression was the key to bringing the power back up to gasoline levels. Is the same amount of propane flowing out of the tank regardless of engine RPM ? If yes, is this ok ? Does the engine run rich at low RPM and lean at high RPM ? Maybe im not understanding something but it seems like there is no physical connection between any fuel regulators and the actual generator. Just that bolt that got 5 or 6 turns.
    Also, that fuel supply snorkel that went behind the airbox looks like thin / unprotected material that could easily get a hole vibrated into it over time.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two regulators. One on the tank, and the load regulator on the generator. The load generator has a diaphragm in it to open and close a valve to allow for more gas flow. Then it goes past the load block…. Which is the bolt you turn which acts kinda like a jet for fine tuning.
      So yes it is fully regulated verses some diy tricks that can and will possibly kill you.

    Nice one, so how does it work on NG connected to the house, also I have a Korean brand generator is the kit the same for most genies. cheers.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the kit is mostly the same you just have to get the correct snorkel. That’s the only part that would be a little different. But a lot of gens runs very similar carbs and bolt patterns but still need to find the correct for your gen. You may have to email them.
      As for NG it’s almost identical to running propane only you get a little less btu’s so slightly less power. So the load block may have to be adjusted slightly different.

    • @Pk3_Garage
      @Pk3_Garage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This kit works great on NG. There is minimal power loss when running on NG, from my experience. The key is setting up the regulator on low, medium and large loads. The engine should be running smooth. (Use a wattage meter to see the hertz)
      Once it's set up, you will be fine and won't have to make any adjustments. Also, you have to have the correct size gas pipes and NG pressure and volume being delivered to the generator.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gasoline is more efficient and will get longer run times.
      The Honda 3000 will run 20 hrs on a full tank @ 1/4 load on 3.4 gallons according to specs. The same amount of propane would probably get you between 17.5 and 18.5 hrs. There is a formula but that’s in the general area.

    larry

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The regulator that stays on the gen should be closed off. But I wonder if there could be enough vacuum to open and draw air. But on the snorkel there is a little hole to prevent vacuum and only allow pressurized gas to come up it.
      I may look again and double check but never had a issue running on gas or any difference.

    • @Pk3_Garage
      @Pk3_Garage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You bring up a very good point and something I never thought about. We have the same kit installed on a Predator 9000/7250 generator. We use NG as our primary fuel source and gasoline as a back-up.
      I installed a gas shutoff valve in front of the regulator. If there would be a vacuum leak, this valve in the close position, would prevent it.
