- This version of the 1973 Belmont Stakes has Ray Haight's CBS radio call. In this race, Secretariat won by 31 lengths in a stakes record time. Horses finishing 2 thru 5 were Twice A Prince, My Gallant, Pvt. Smiles, and Sham. Jockey: Ron Turcotte. Trainer: Lucien Laurin.

I was in Okinawa (U.S. Army) at the time. During Kentucky Derby, our company recreation room (with one TV) was only half full (it was Saturday morning there, and with most everyone hungovered..well), but everyone who watched had a good time. During Preakness, it was packed, and everyone was going crazy, especially when Big Red did that pass on the first turn with a unbelievable move. During Belmont, our CO scheduled an early morning breakfast period so we could clear up the dining area and fill it with chairs just in time for the start of the race, he also brought in two more big TV's (if you could call 25 inch Zenith big, lol)..the place was standing room only, even had some off-base personnel coming in with their families. When Big Red started pulling away from Sham, then Chic Anderson uttering the now famous "he's moving like a tremendous machine"..the place was shaking like an earthquake; when he crossed the finish line everyone was high-fiving and hugging. In a matter three races, Secretariat brought pride and joy to our little company in the woods - that I still feel to this day. And I am now 67 years old//

Secretariat’s Triple Crown run was such a magical 2 months for all Americans. Thrills of pure joy & then, next-level awe at his truly supernatural performance in the final & longest race.
I was only 13 but I remember the great excitement as my family clustered around the living room TV. Through the years, we loved to watch all of the Triple Crown races, but the memories from 1973 are just indelible.
I watch Secretariat videos often; always a boost to the spirit!

I attended the Virginia Derby a few years ago as a guest of the owners of Keen Ice (Ironically he sired the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner). While there, Penny Chenery was sitting all alone. I spoke with her for a short while. Absolutely a thrill. She mentioned the move Secretariat made at the Preakness and told me it was all Secretariat, the Ronnie had nothing to do with it. Pretty cool!

It's wonderful to hear this radio call by Ray Haight after only hearing Chic Anderson's legendary call for all these years. It's like reliving the race by hearing a different announcer describe it with such raw emotion.

I’ve had to watch this clip regularly over the years. I watched this race with my father. Oh, he loved that horse. We lived very close to Santa Anita Racetrack and he knew horses. I cry every time I see it. It must be the emotion of the race and my father’s excitement but I’m teary right now!

Still brings tears to my eyes...always will...saw the race on tv as a kid graduating from high school and it remains one of my fondest memories...so fortunate to have witnessed the 1973 Triple Crown win by a great horse.. Secretaiat!!
I had the privilege to watch Secretariat run these races on TV as a young girl. It stopped me in my steps as I was stunned with aww!!!!!! watching him just get faster and faster. There has never been a horse like Secretariat.
Upon autopsy after he died they found a heart that was abnormally large. He had better oxygenation as a result.
I am so glad I got to watch him too when I was a kid. My first and only favorite horse. And you're exactly right, Vanda. He did get "faster and faster". In the Kentucky Derby, he actually ran each progressive quarter faster than the previous one. Which, of course, is impossible. But Secretariat did it.

This call doesn't come close to Anderson's epic call. It's not very good, really. I've tried to find the call of the race at the track--Anderson's was strictly for TV--but have never spotted it or heard it.
It’s a very unfortunate part of a great call/race. He’s not a machine at all. Mr. Anderson regretted it.
Chic’s call was great. I personally liked him saying “Secretariat is all alone” even better, especially because you could hear the shock in his voice.
Secretariat, the greatest horse ever to race, not only won the Triple Crown in 1973, but still holds the current official record for the fastest time in all three Triple Crown races.

@@stephengray1256 All the fastest 3 year olds in the world have been prepped for the greatest race, the Kentucky Derby, and the Triple Crown for over a hundred years.Secretariat ran the fastest time of all of them, in all 3 races, nearly 50 years later still not equalled. Sorry, but that is the greatest feat in horse racing. Maybe in all of sports.
I watched this race probably 500 times already. Can’t get enough of the best racing horse ever, and his nice owner.

I was 11 I watched that race that day on TV and I was amazed! I will never forget that as long as I live & It’s been over 50 years ago !!!

I could NOT believe it! Watched the race only because of all the hoopla going around in the press at the time regarding this horse. I was never into horse racing in the least but found out afterwards that he blew the world record time for the Belmont completely away... Most records will eventually fall. But NOT this one and THAT is why I consider this win the greatest single achievement in ANY sport. Afterwards we found that Turcotte was just along for the ride as Secretariat had his own ideas.

Just looked up Chic Anderson. Passed away at forty-seven. We should all be so lucky to have a piece of work that will live on far beyond us.
Every time I see this video, it still gives me chills! A record that may stand forever! 2021 and no horse has come close

Yeah, that was an iconic commentary job. Still brings me to the brink of tears. He felt perfectly that it was divine what was happening. But these images! Way more bright and sharper! Who's going to blend them?

Impossible to top Chic Anderson’s epic call. First time that I heard the Ray Haight version. I like it a lot. Both calls are nearly identical for the first three-eighths. He captures the historical moment. Ray was the announcer around the MD tracks when I became a fan in the 60’s. Ray was among the great callers during racing’s glory days. The racing world lost him way too soon. RIP.
What underscores how unique Secretariat’s performance was is the fact that neither Haight nor Anderson had ever in their experience seen any horse win by such a distance & so each announcer could only guesstimate it to be 25 lengths. I love how an astonished Haight here at the end even admits he had no way to judge because it was so unprecedented! 31!!!
This is the first time I heard Ray's call, it's decent, but Chick's version immortalized this race.
Chics call is what it is, the best. But “Its Secretariat on the inside, Sham on the outside and they’re racing stride for stride as a team” Yeah, they were.
It's interesting to hear the call of the race other than Chic Anderson's. I miss.. " Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a tremendous machine! Secretariat by twelve! Secretariat by fourteen lengths at the turn!...Secretariat is all alone! He's a sixteenth of a mile away from the rest of the horses! Secretariat is in a position where he's impossible to catch..."

I was 11 years old when I watched this race with my dad. I asked him, “Dad, is Secretariat the best horse ever?” Dad said, “Yes , I think so.” Imagine seeing the best ever at such a young age.
This is GREAT to hear! All of these years since watching the actual race, Chic Anderson's immortal call rang in my memory clear as a bell - including, of course, the "moving like a tremendous machine" moment. But this call by Ray Haight is great, and one I've not heard. Hearing it adds to that unbelievable moment nearing fifty years ago, back when things were real and people weren't toyed with by the media..
First time I've heard another call of that historic race. There is a reason why Chic Anderson's commentary is immortalized. His astonishment and incredulous disbelief of what he is witnessing is evident in his voice. The first indication is, " Secretariat is blazing along! " Then, when Anderson realizes the horse has run 3/4 of a mile in 1:09, he voices that defining phrase, " He is moving like a tremendous machine!! " The rest of his call is legendary.
First time for me, too. I much prefer Chic Anderson's rendition. It is an all-time classic. (Small note. The time for 6 furlongs was actually 1:09 4/5. Still amazingly fast considering the race was only half over!)
good point, Anderson was expressing astonishment and disbelief at what he was witnessing. And who can blame him, it was (and is) astonishing to this day

Chic Anderson’s call has got to be the most recognized and famous call ever in horse racing!!! Secretariat and Chic will live on forever!!!! What a legacy!!!!!!!

Secretariat is all alone, he’s almost a 1/16 of a mile away from the rest of the horses, Secretariat is in a position impossible to catch!
This video has great clarity, the best I’ve seen!!! Wouldn’t it have been great to have that footage with Chic’s call in the movie!!!
This was the radio call that was put to video.
But I love the way this grizzled, jaded older sportscaster just gave up calling for a moment to say that Secretariat was so far out in front that he wS making a joke of the 105th (104th?) Belmont. It conveys a sense of history, of the race's tradition and grandeur, and how this baby horse was stomping all over it. :)

The people at Belmont put a pole 31 lengths from the finish and painted it in blue-and-white checkers. A nice tribute to the greatest racehorse of them all. And Chic Anderson was right; that pole is almost a sixteenth of a mile from the wire.
I have watched this race countless times and just realized for the first time that the TV coverage has to go to a wide angle shot when Secretariat entered the far turn just so they could show both he & Sham in the same shot.
A treat to hear this call. The announcer was a bit overwhelmed by Secretariat’s performance, and who can blame him?
Thinking about Americans listening to this historical event gives me goosebumps!
No, not as immortal as Chic Anderson's call, but I liked how in this one you could really hear the roar of the crowd growing louder and louder as Secretariat came down the stretch, followed by the exhilaration of the color commentator as he crossed the line. One of those rare moments where everyone knew they were witnessing history and gave vent to their emotions.
Yes this was the radio call put to video. There was a third call of the race that’s been lost to history.
I'm not much about horses but can remember as a 13 yr. old all the excitement about this great horse and how it seemed to restore a kind of positive mood in the country as all we heard on the news at the time with Watergate and that damn Vietnam war was depressing. We sure could use another Secretariat today.

Trivia, Joe. Secretariat broke the 3 existing records in each triple crown race. Belmont is 1/4 mile longer than the Derby. How exactly did he break his Derby record time in this race?
@@Mister8224 I believe Joe L was referring to the 11/4 mile fraction in the Belmont of 159 which broke the Derby time by 2/5 of a second.
Watching the Preakness in 2021. Saw this race again. The same tears came back, now 48 years later. Incredible performance by the most incredible machine I'll ever have seen. 💐💐💐💐💐💐

Chic Anderson’s call of this race is the most iconic call in racing history. It was like calling the only ‘perfect game’ in the history of thoroughbred racing. That 2:24 flat time for this race, the Belmont Stakes, at 1.5 miles, on a dirt track, will never be broken.
Never. And THAT is why I consider this to be the greatest single sporting event in history.

I was 9 years old watching this race. i remember my Grandma saying Oh My God with tears in her eyes. I was only 9 but now I understand why she reacted the way she did as sit here with tears in my eyes.

Sham. The most underrated horse. I love you sham.
True dat. I did not realize this was Sham's last race because he broke a canon bone during this race. That is why he came in last after such domination alongside Secretariat in the middle of the race. I watched this time to keep an eye on Sham instead instead of Secretariat this time. You can see where Sham slows dramatically. 2:01 I hate that about horse racing. The other 2 jockeys realized something was wrong because of a change in Sham's gait. They exchanged looks and shouted challenges for 2nd place to each other. Sham survived the injury.
@@imhere653 Yes, Sham would never race again. He died of a heart attack in 1993. He was 23.
I was fifteen at the time this race ran and we watched it on TV. Back then the three networks were all you had and we always watched all of the Triple Crown races.
I was younger than that, and I remember the days of 3 networks.
In my lifetime I can say I got to see the American Men's Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets, Gretzky play hockey, Jordan play basketball, Phelps swim, Bolt run, Ali and Tyson fight. But the greatest athlete I've ever seen walked on 4 legs, not two, Secretariat.

@@chipschannel9494 you didn't have cell phones back then. You had radio telephones which were really expensive and really rare. I didn't get my first cell phone until I was 31 years old in 1991. The first place I worked that had one was in 1988, and it looked exactly like that cell phone the Danny Glover is talking on in lethal weapon. In other words it was about the size of an ammo can, and I remember it used to cost like 3 dollars a minute to talk on it and if you ever used it at work you had to write it up and let the supervisor know who you had called and why it was worth $3 a minute to do it.

I loved watching this as I listened to this call. I have listened to the prerace from this, the race call, and the post race multiple times, which overall I like better better than this alone. You get little tidbits of info of what was going on behind the scenes as they tried to anticipate what would happen, and their amazement at what actually did happen! That said, I am glad someone took the time to also match up this call and the video, nothing says we can't like both, which I definitely do!!!

Greatest horse I ever seen Secretariat just toyed with the other horses nearly forty years later still holds record for Belmont I still remember watching it amazing.
In the Derby & the Preakness, Secretariat took a dramatically longer path to the winners circle, as he was near the rail, in last place for both races, until he shot way wide on the outside, blowing by lesser horses in his relentless pursuit of the checkered flag.

I've never heard this. I've only ever heard Chick Anderson's call. I guess that's the one that was broadcast that day? I was five and I very much remember watching this race and Anderson's call is always in my head, and it is the best race call ever....but this is great too. I don't know how one can put words to what was happening at that time. These are the events that made me a lifelong horseman, and I can only explain it as an act of God.
The race was carried on the CBS Radio Network with Win Elliot & Ray Haight.
That was a great radio call of the race. I wasn’t aware off this. But if you were at the beach on June 9, 1973 and put the sports station on your radio….this is what you would have heard. That was a great call.
In 2024 still have never seen anything even close to this
If you look at the ‘72 Munich Olympics, every track and field record has been smashed many times over. But no horse has sniffed Secretariat’s records in the almost 50 years since he ran.
Listen to the noise of the crowd...you can hear the ebb and flow of amazement and concern...the hope of a truly authoritative victory and at the same time the anticipation of collapse in the stretch...and then the sound changes...doubt disappears....joy and celebration of the miraculous overtake everyone.

Never heard this call. It amazes me that we have never seen the official NYRA video of the 1973 Belmont Stakes that had the call of Dave Johnson, who then was the New York Racing Association race caller.
I know I only saw the NYRA reply of the 73 Belmont in 1978 when Harvey Pack did a special on the Tracks Close Circut Network.
The NYRA Arcives really dropped the ball of the NYRA Replay/Dave Johnson call.

Agree: I've tried to find Johnson's '73 Belmont call online but no sign of it. Did the NYRA not save it? I'm curious to hear how he called it for the crowd at the track (Anderson's was just for TV). Nothing could have topped Anderson's call--for me the best call of ANY sporting event in my lifetime--and this radio call doesn't impress me much; it's not even close to the quality of Anderson's, if we're honest.

Thanks. I had heard Ray Haight's call in the past but not covered by the video. This video makes it much more meaningful. The color was magnificent. Unfortunately Dave Johnson's call has been lost to history. Can you imagine Dave Johnson calling out "and down the stretch they come" in this Belmont.
His call would never measure up to Chic Anderson's..."He is moving like a tremendous machine" ...no call can ever match that one line.

If I had a Time Machine and 10 places I could go, this would be one of theme. Beatles rooftop, D-Day from far offshore, the capstone being put into place on the Great Pyramid at Giza, Secretariat… you know, that sort of thing.
I read that when they performed the autopsy after Secretariat’s death, they were amazed at the physical size of the great horse’s heart. It was larger than any they’d seen which would explain his great stamina when running and why he seemed to go faster the farther he ran. He could outrun any horse of his day.
16 lbs. three times the size of a normal horse, that massive muscle wasn’t working hard at all .

When a horse breaks the track record and isn't even challenged, you know that is a great horse...Secretariat was running against his own standards...No horse in history would have beaten Secretariat on that day.

Right? I knew Dave called this race for the NYRA at the track but i can't find it either. Chic Anderson's call was for CBS TV and this one here was for NBC radio, both national calls. But what the fans heard that day at the track was the great Dave Johnson, shouting, And down the stretch they come!!! But maybe on this day there was no they, just the immortal Secretarial all alone, so who knows what Dave called. I'd pay good money to hear it hear and download it for posterity, forever.

Secretariat was NOT an underdog. The Disney movie got that completely wrong. Read William (Bill) Nack's book. Secretariat was EXPECTED to win the Triple Crown even before he was Horse of the Year (as a 2 year old) in 1972. He was syndicated for $6.08 million before he raced as a 3 year old. There was an attempt by an interest in Ireland to buy him (they were unaware of the syndication underway). Knowledgeable horsemen (Charles Hatton, C.V. Vanderbilt, Ogden Phipps, Bull Hancock) were impressed by his virtually perfect conformation, as well as his speed. He was on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated the same week before the Belmont. Secretariat was not the underdog. He was expected to win the Belmont Stakes. By winning it this way he showed us he was a superhorse. That he would win was not what was impossible...that he existed was ... that was Nack's thesis....Disney got it wrong...which is a shame.
