I live in Baltimore and go to Pimilco as often as I can. I don't bet much. I sit in the grandstand and watch these beautiful animals race. Despite all of the recent controversy about Maryland racing, I cannot believe I won't be able to see another horse race. Thoroughbreds were made to run. All athletes take challenges.
Watching Secretariat run triggers deep seated emotional responses in people still today after 50 years. Why is he able to do that ? He triggers these emotions in the heart, and the soul more than just the brain, because when you watch him run it is glaringly obvious that he himself possessed a rare, and unusual amount of heart and soul.💧 Watching him run, still, after half a century, a lump in my throat, and a tear in my eye.
By running an extremely strong race, Sham made Secretariat run his best to set the Derby record. The Belmont was his best individual performance, but this was my favorite race of his with the possible exception of The Hopeful in his 2 year old campaign.

1:22 "Secretariat has made a sudden move..." I've always loved that line and that moment. It's as though immortal fame whispered into Secretariat's ear "come on, I'm waiting for you."
Secretariat would still be running around that track to this day, gaining speed with each lap, if they didn't stop him once the race was over lol. Born to run!
Great Quality! To Secretariat & Forego race against each just this once. (2)HOF LEGENDS. Wow! We were Blessed to have a decade like no other. ..The ‘70’s🐎
I met Penny Chenery at the Virginia Derby some years ago. She was sitting alone. Alone! Had a great five minute conversation with her. She told me that the move Secretariat made at the Preakness was all him and not the jockey. That was his greatest moment she said.
When Secretariat made that extraordinary move to the front on the clubhouse turn in the Preakness it was if he was saying to the other horses, "I'm bored with you slowpokes. See you later."
I agree. That sustained run in the Belmont is awesome and historic, however the move on the clubhouse turn in the Preakness is just breathtaking. I haven't seen a horse do anything close to that since and win. Secretariat did things race horses aren't supposed to be able to do.
When I watched this, I was a junior in high school and didn't know I was watching history in the making by the greatest athlete to ever walk this earth. I can't help but get emotional rewatching these races.
Love that horse. Who ever put his shoes on did s terrific job, his form was perfect. Of course he had the greatest power and heart, but what a lot of people don't understand is the way the shoes are fitted and the jockey make the difference too. It all has to be in balance. Favorite horse.
To NBC Sports - Thank you so much for this gorgeously remastered video! Also, I can’t wait to see your remasterings of Secretariat’s Preakness & Belmont Stakes! This is such a thrilling year for all of us Big Red lovers ❤
Had he been born in a different year, Sham may well have been a Triple Crown winner himself. Fifty years ago, Secretariat proved which was the better race horse.
He was 5th in the Belmont. I know that he was in a speed duel with Secretariat, but we don't know whether he had the stamina for the Belmont in the first place. Also, a lot has to go right to win a triple crown. I think one can, without too much difficulty, name 30 horses who clearly had enough talent to win the triple crown.
I love Secretariat my absolute favorite, but poor Sham, if he was not up against a super horse( heart size) he would have won the race easily. So, cheers to Sham❤️ born at the wrong time
Just like in 1978 when Alydar came in second in all TC races to Affirmed. Felt sorry for him. But it was the most exciting Triple Crown battle I've seen.
Two amazing trivia feats: 1. Secretariat was the first horse to run the derby in under two minutes, at 1:59 and 2/5 seconds. I believe it's happened only one other time since, in 2001. 2. His split times for each quarter mile were faster than the previous one, which effectively means he was still accelerating at the end of the race.
The most amazing horse of 20th century his bloodline was spectacular his showing in the triple crown races were stellar no horse will ever break his track record in both the Kentucky Derby and The Belmont States had the time keeper at Pimlico stop the counter when the race ended this amazing horse could have claimed all 3 record times !! Wow what crystal clear footage!!! I hope we will have that for all of Big Red's legendary races!!!
Me too!
YES, young folks think that's all we had.
Happy 50th Anniversary Champ! We will never forget you, Superhorse!
No discussion of “greatest athlete of all time” is complete unless this athlete is given his due.
The longer the race, the faster Secretariat was. An incredible horse with a heart for the race & the win! 🌟❤🏆
I grew up in Texas and my family had some horses. I was 10 years old and I still remember how great that horse was. Everyone loved Secretariat. I was super sad when I heard the news when he died. What a horse…
I still have the memory of watching this race with my dad when I was 14. What a fabulous machine Secretariat aka Big Red was!
GREATEST horse ever - hands down.
Watching Secretariat run triggers deep seated emotional responses in people still
today after 50 years.
Why is he able to do that ?
He triggers these emotions in the heart, and the soul more than just the brain,
because when you watch him run it is glaringly obvious that he himself possessed
a rare, and unusual amount of heart and soul.💧
Watching him run, still, after half a century, a lump in my throat, and a tear in my eye.
Well put
By running an extremely strong race, Sham made Secretariat run his best to set the Derby record. The Belmont was his best individual performance, but this was my favorite race of his with the possible exception of The Hopeful in his 2 year old campaign.
And all the while Sham broke the record himself that day. He’s definitely my black stallion, never gets the credit he deserves.
Sham must have one of the fastest Derby times as well.
@@wlamb9 Sham ran sub 2:00 I believe. Can't recall if I've ever heard the exact time he ran in the Derby. I think it's between Sham and Monarchos for 2nd. best time ever in Kentucky Derby.
@@Psyfi85 If Secretariat were not in these races, Sham easily wins the Kentucky Derby & Preakness. Not sure about the Belmont. Pincay really whipped him hard in the first two. Maybe without Secr., Pincay doesn't have to whip him as hard... and he has enough left to win the Belmont and triple crown. Who knows. Sham was a GREAT horse.
@@jeffgarmon1 agreed, the two of them were 11 lengths ahead before anyone blinked in Belmont. They treated Sham poorly when it seemed to matter most, Sham had some nice strategies himself but got whipped out of stride. My guess is if Sec doesn’t exist Forego runs in the afternoon instead of morning in Belmont to challenge Shams crown bid.
I remember watching Big Red win all of his tripple crown races, 50 years ago, and it feels like yesterday.
These animals are so majestic, so beautiful.I feel so blessed by God to live in a time where I get to see them.❤
When I watched this, I was a junior in high school and didn't know I was watching history in the making by the greatest athlete to ever walk this earth. I can't help but get emotional rewatching these races.
Hands down the best race horse ever
The clearest posting of this race ever. no one else on youtube has this clear of recording.........
It's amazing how bad the recordings are.
Truly Epic has an HD tribute of all 3 races.
A massive superstar of a horse, great to see him again
Love that horse. Who ever put his shoes on did s terrific job, his form was perfect. Of course he had the greatest power and heart, but what a lot of people don't understand is the way the shoes are fitted and the jockey make the difference too. It all has to be in balance. Favorite horse.
To NBC Sports -
Thank you so much for this gorgeously remastered video!
Also, I can’t wait to see your remasterings of Secretariat’s Preakness & Belmont Stakes!
This is such a thrilling year for all of us Big Red lovers ❤
The one animal other than my dogs I truly loved.
The one and only great horse of my generation Secretariat
Seattle Slew was also pretty great. So was Ruffian.
Had he been born in a different year, Sham may well have been a Triple Crown winner himself. Fifty years ago, Secretariat proved which was the better race horse.
Worse, he'll be Uma Musumefied instead 😂😂
Same was true of Alydar in 1978. He was second to Affirmed in all three TC races.
So true.
I agree. Had he been born a year earlier or later. wow I believe there is such a thing as just pure luck he was born without it.
Secretariat has his deserved place in racing folklore history , he was an equine superstar., credit to the second for making a race of it .
I love Secretariat my absolute favorite, but poor Sham, if he was not up against a super horse( heart size) he would have won the race easily. So, cheers to Sham❤️ born at the wrong time
He was a legend in his own right. He pushed Red to find gears he didn’t know he had, a gallant horse with an iron will.
Thing is, Sham had the nearly the same heart size Secretariat did, he was just pushed to hard and just didn't have the same umph Big Red did.
@@taliagage2050 yep he had the X factor like Red did. Ashame they ruined a great horse like that
Just like in 1978 when Alydar came in second in all TC races to Affirmed. Felt sorry for him. But it was the most exciting Triple Crown battle I've seen.
Never gets old! God Bless him!!
Loved the movie and Secretariat was so special. He will live forever in the hearts of Triple Crown fans.
I know nothing of horses or stakes racing. I still get chills watching this magnificent mammal!
The greatest ever... no one will ever be better than him. We all love him...rip.... God bless you..
50 years ago today and the record still stands that colt 🐎 was the goat 🐐 😃
There’ll never be another horse like him…
Two amazing trivia feats:
1. Secretariat was the first horse to run the derby in under two minutes, at 1:59 and 2/5 seconds. I believe it's happened only one other time since, in 2001.
2. His split times for each quarter mile were faster than the previous one, which effectively means he was still accelerating at the end of the race.
Sham broke 2 minutes also.
Yup, Sham did it right behind him in 1:59 and 4
The most amazing horse of 20th century his bloodline was spectacular his showing in the triple crown races were stellar no horse will ever break his track record in both the Kentucky Derby and The Belmont States had the time keeper at Pimlico stop the counter when the race ended this amazing horse could have claimed all 3 record times !! The Greatest horse to ever run bar none !!
Does anybody ever get tired of watching secretariat run . Great quality video by the way
It really is!
After 50 years, I still get chills!
Me too!
Me too! Love it!
Long live the legend! Always love seeing these videos!
One of a kind! What a horse that enters horse racing legend and forever folklore!
All of these horses are champions. Secretariat just had that one spark that puts him into another zone.
Wow! 😲 I was only four years old, but I still remember this horse's race. What an amazing feat, what an amazing horse!
What a beautiful horse! I remember watching this race.
And Secretariat did NOT need to be whipped to run. He was allowed to be the athlete he was born to be. He knew what he was doing.
Secretariat's 1:59 and 2/5 Derby record still stands to this day despite how wide he went on the turn!
I’ve watched these three race more times than I can remember and they never get old I was a little kid I remember it on tv when it happened and it feels just like that time 50 years ago rest in peace big Red your the greatest horse of all time
Before the start and even before that last turn, we never know what amazing things this horse and jockey could make possible. Watching the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, it looks like Secretariat could have gone even faster! Sublime.
Cannot help but cry every time I watch this incredible, amazing animal.
I never tire of watching the "Immortal" "SECRETARIAT's" incredible runs.. Yes "Sham" was a good horse and in any other year may even have won the coveted American "Triple Crown",..! It was just his misfortune to have been born the same year as "Big Red". Whenever I see the Legend that was and still is "SECREATRIAT", my mood always brightens... I may well never see another like him, in my lifetime(I am 73 now) but thankfully we still have videographic records to thrill to..!
The grreatest 3 year old to ever step foot on a race track. We'll never see another.
2 year old
Never raced 3
@@reesewahl5488 Secretariat raced at 2 and 3 years of age. He was voted best 2 year old colt and Horse of the Year in 1972. In 1973, Secretariat was voted best 3 year old colt and horse of the Year.
Still gives me chills. Love this guy!
They need to restore and remaster all of the Secretariat footage. The poor quality is an insult.
Secretariat is the greatest race horse ever. I truly believe this was once in a lifetime to witness. Love you Big Red! ❤
I love the under dog story of Big Red. Although I was just a teenager, I was thrilled to watch these races live.
In the 1973 derby, Secretariat was one of a half dozen colts that would become legendary.
Thankfully, Sham was there in all three races to push Secretariat to run hard!
