I was there that day, standing on a dumpster behind the gas station at the Northwest corner of Euclid and N. Wilke at the end of the back straight. I've never seen an animal move that fast. He looked like a mahogany locomotive. The sound of the hoofs could be felt as he went by.

Oh man , what an incredible experience that must have been.. I get goose bumps every time I watch the Canadian turf invitational, when he takes the last turn for home, he is all by himself and yes, you can hear his hooves striking the ground and you can see the white plumes from his breath, it's nearly dark and there are lights glowing around as he passes the infield tote board, it's almost surreal.. Greatest racehorse to ever step on the track, then AND now ...

I was at the Belmont when he won. Greatest race horse I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. I wonder if Ron whispered in his ear....." Let's show them how it's done, and give them what they came for here for "!! Ron is also one of the greatest riders ever. He was the perfect match for Big Red. What a pair !! God bless them both....

I was six and was there with my parents and brother who all loved horse racing..I can remember wandering around the track eating soft serve ice cream, chocolate..and looking for winning tickets that somebody may have tossed away..It was a great time to be a kid at the track..
Then all I remember was the great Phil Georgeff Arlington Parks announcer saying " Here they come spinning out of the turn". and I could see Big Red in front and charging down the track and saying to myself I'm seeing the greatest horse ever win today...After that I was hooked on racing and just loved horses ..God's perfect animal"

I've been reading the various comments and there seems to be an antagonist in the mix who doesn't hold the same admiration towards Secretariat's accomplishments and wasn't impressed by his triple crown win, even when it's pointed out that not only did he win the Triple Crown, he broke the record for having the fastest time IN ALL THREE races and that quite a few people have pointed out how he still to this day, 50 years later, holds the record for all three races ..
I just wanted to add that not only does he still hold the record for fastest winning time 50 years later, he also has the distinction of going faster than any other horse since the inception of the Triple Crown in 1919 .. so there's never been a racehorse who has gone faster when racing in the Triple Crown from 1919 to 2022 .. THAT'S HUGE !! AND That's A LOT OF HORSES because it's not just the triple crown winners he has beaten, it's EVERY RACEHORSE THAT'S RACED IN THE TRIPLE CROWN RACES.. FROM 1919 TO 2022!! IF THAT DONT DESERVE ADMIRATION, WHAT THE HECK DOES?!?

what deserves admiration? ... carrying huge weight over years of grueling competition taking on the best horses of generations; demonstrating the ability to respond to challenges of other talented horses under the burden of those weights; grinding out victories against the best horses of their generation at a wide variety of distances with little rest between races through years of pain and painstaking preparation.... secretariat was obviously a gifted horse, clearly a special horse, but not transcendent as many of his fans imagine him to have been... one cannot necessarily fault the horse itself for not showing those traits if it is, as he was, constrained by facts of life such as money and syndication etc...but one also should not be deceived by record speed in a few races either, and as sensational as those achievements surely are -- one is not to credit the horse with supreme greatness without reference to character (not temperament) and INTEGRITY of that character over a lifetime of work,,,, knowledgeable fans are quick to point out that secretariat wasn't feeling well or wasn't properly prepped in his losses, but what horse or human for that matter is 100% for every competitive event .... every race runs horses that have some legitimate excuse or other... while anyone can respect the obvious beauty and speed of secretariat, human admiration is earned by much more than those superficial traits, just as it is in real human life... EQUINE GREATNESS like any other greatness we humans contemplate, must include above all the dimensions of character and integrity which secretariat was not blessed to exhibit, and so our highest admiration must remain withheld from him (and naturally placed on a different horse :)

    • @challloyd215
      @challloyd215 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

First, anyone knows you can't compare times exclusively, as track conditions were different pre 1970. Even since Secretariat raced, track conditions have varied. Second, his Preakness time was totally stolen. I remember everyone really wanted that 1:53 2/5, until a few horses tied, then it wasn't good enough. I just wonder if a horse running 1:53 flat, if they would have fooled the Maryland Racing Board and had him running in 1:52 4/5. His connections are really pushing this horse into best ever and his obnoxious fans are like sheep. Time is subjective. One cannot honestly say the filly, who actually ran faster, fairly, is better than Citation or Count Fleet or in the fifth radius of Secretariat? You can't judge a horse by one race or the Triple Crown exclusively. Is Assault or Omaha in your top 5 best ever?? Secretariat was a great horse and the prettiest, but what his connections are doing and how his fans are, really diminish his accomplishments.

@@challloyd215 well spoken, and you are absolutely correct about a horses speed, stamina and conditions of track and how even the years can affect the outcome of a race .. there are many variables involved, but you gotta admit, Secretariat was in the right place at the right time as a racehorse, but he was also at the right time in history .. and personally speaking, watching him race is still breathtaking and emotional each and every time (especially now that the original race footage has been remastered and restored)..
*I was 10 years old in 1973, and I wish I could say I remember watching him race then, but unfortunately I don't remember doing so

There was a horse that beat Secretariat's Belmont
time of 2:24, and that horse did the 1.5 mile in 2:22,
and that horse is Twighlight Eclipse in 2013, at the
Pan American Stakes. So he beat Secretariats record
time by 2 seconds, which is quite a feat. There was
a difference, but small, and that Secretariat ran the
Belmont on a dirt track, and Twighlight Eclipse did his
time of 2:22 on turf, which may be a bit faster ? You
can Google this race, like I did. Funny thing is, this
horse never ran in any big races, and I never heard
of him ? I doubt he could rival the great Secretariat
head to head, but this horse holds the World Record.
Although this is very true, I'm not really that up to
date on all aspects of horse racing.

He was brilliant for a horse. He ran how and when he wanted to run. I believe the number of losses were three, but it would not matter if it was all of those he ran except the Triple Crown. Find me any athlete at all that can lose in some of their competitions and win in the toughest, while setting track and world records that still stand almost fifty years later. To try to convince anyone that Secretariat was humiliated at the Belmont is ludicrous. You are in fact confused with the Kentucky Derby that for a very long time had the wrong time on the official win records - because the people that were allowed to go in the infield to watch the race, tripped over the starter's clock and started it 2 seconds before the race actually started. They later used the television reels of the race which were continuous, to compare and were able to prove what happened. The Kentucky Derby was able to correct the time. No one was confused on whether he won the race, they just had the time wrong.
See? That is how you make a case for something. You don't shout your opinion, and make sure you know the case. This is all well documented, so if I made a mistake in my statements - it's all mine. I'm getting old now so it is possible i forgot something. But I know for sure that when we look at my facts, and compare them to yours, I will have more facts in what I said than you did in what you said.

He defeated at least eleven horses who, at one time or another in their careers, tied or set stakes, track or world records. Steve Haskins at Bloodhorse wrote an excellent article some time ago about Secretariat's competition which pretty much negates any pathetic attempts at degrading the competition he faced. Secretariat finished first in 17 of his 21 races. The DQ in the Champagne was a marginal call at best. Stop the Music didn't touch Secretariat in the four races they faced each other. The maiden race was a joke getting wiped out at the start, and he was sick for both the Wood and the Whitney. Turcotte begged Laurin not to run him in the Whitney after he worked him and knew something was wrong. This horse was racing a few years before I was born, and my mom told me about him (she was a warmup rider and hotwalker on some California tracks). The way she talked about him is fully justified and then some! I'm continually stunned at watching his action, because you can see very clearly that he's not really even working very hard in a lot of these races. It blows my mind, because GAWD, if we got to see him race at 4... He was clearly just hitting his stride. It's very obvious that he was just starting to get easy and feel confident about the way he worked, and not worrying anymore about getting caught up in the scrum at the break... he just knows what he's doing and he knows how he wants to run, and he's got so much personality and guts, it's really too bad we didn't get to see him go another season. But we also know that he might have gotten hurt at some point, so I guess we can be happy with what we did get to see, and to know that we have all of this greatness available for people to witness years later so that he'll never be forgotten, it's inscribed in the annals now, and I'm just so grateful that I get to see him run in these videos, since I wasn't alive to see him run in person. He brings me to tears. What an incredible horse!

This horse race was a good example of how it took Secretariat a while out of the starting gate to "get his legs under him" (i.e., find his rhythm and stride). But once he did, he could very quickly put distance between himself and the other horses in a race. As has been said about Secretariat, he was a "pounder" rather than a "glider" in his running style, pounding his hooves into the dirt.

    • @jm1657
      @jm1657 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True.
One of Secretariat’s usual exercise riders, Jim Gaffney, described Big Red’s movement as reaching out & “grabbing the earth.” His production of power was unlike anything Mr. Gaffney had ever felt in his many years on horses. A tremendous equine athlete Secretariat was, indeed. 💕
I wish that he could’ve raced & lived forever. But how lucky are we that photos and videos were on hand to record his magic! Otherwise, he would have sounded too extraordinary to have actually lived among mere mortals. ❤

Secretariat had everything going for him. Things we could see and things we could not. What we could see was the team of humans from owner to jockey that read him like a book and knew him. What we did not see was the 20 pound heart he had in him compared to the average. This is what made him able to move past the competition like a machine.

His mother was the large heart X-factor carrying daughter of Princequillo, a champion stayer. His father was Bold Ruler, a champion sprinter. Before Secretariat was born, a 100% sister of his was born. It turned out she had the stamina of a stayer and the staying power of a sprinter - the chromosomes had aligned sub-optimally.
But when Secretariat was born, the chromosomes aligned perfectly. It turned out that he could: Sprint at least as well (in fact better than) his father and
Stay at least as well as his (in fact better than) his paternal grandfather.
That unique genetic combination, along with an unusually muscular physique, near perfect conformity (strong straight legs, massive hindquarters, massive neck to transport oxygen, etc) as well as unusually high racing intelligence, made him a truly formidable presence on any race track on any surface, over any distance, against any age group.
And arguably makes him the most gifted race horse to have ever graced a racetrack.
