Sham, one of the greatest, most underrated horses of all time....whose only misfortune was that he was born, raised and competed in the same era as the greatest horse ever, Secretariat.
Definitely, a train wasn’t slowing him down. As they pass stands the first time you can tell he wanted to follow Sham on the inside but got cut off. Perhaps this annoyed him and the rest is history.
@digitalsoldier You are so right. Ron Turcotte always said how intelligent Secretariat was and the horse knew what he was capable of doing. Poor poor Sham tried so darn hard but Secretariat was simply the very BEST.
We have Secretariats great granddaughter. She was one of the first horses to race At Lone Star Park. She was running nine lengths or more ahead of all the other horses in every race but would give out of breath right before the finish. They wanted to do surgery to open her windpipe but I pulled her. I’m glad I did; I feel like I saved her. She is 25 years old now and has been enjoying being our personal pet. We love her “Lone Star” is her name, she answers to and follows us around. She has another horse to share her retirement years with. I wish now we had breed her when she was younger.
Cool! We have his great grandson. His name is Archie, he’s boarded on our farm. He’s the same color as his grandpa and has the same facial marking too! They look pretty damn similar. Only differences are that Archie has a sock and a stocking and is blind in the left eye. Super cool to know his descendants still live among us.

When Secretariat dropped the hammer down in the first turn, it seemed like he was shot out of a cannon going from last to first place. Wow....what a horse!!!!!
Years....never saw a horse before or since make a move like that early in the race. Circled from last, passing everyone like they were standing still. Imagine if Taj ran a slightly faster pace or if Sham could have reached Red's hindquarters in the stretch....no telling how fast a time he could have run. Red was basically in Cruise Control. Turcotte was probably thinking the same thing...got at the Belmont he just let him go. The fractions were insane and yet Red just kept going. We'll NEVER see another horse like Secretariat. Certainly none will have a Triple Crown like his. Records in all.
@@davidmcgovern7663yes he was definitely in cruise control. My belief is Red wanted to go with Sham along the rail but Deadly Dream kept going in and out thwarting his plan. Then he makes his legendary leap forward and once he got past Our Native it was over. Sham was the only one that challenged him coming by..love him.
One of the jockeys said that all of a sudden this freight train came by and almost tore the number off his right arm sleeve! We will never again witness such greatness as we did when Secretariat was racing...a truly once in a lifetime experience and horse! RIP Secretariat and Mrs. Penny Tweedy..may y’all Rest In Peace together!❤️
"Here comes Secretariat!" If those words do not give you goosebumps, you do not have a pulse. What a great call by Chick Anderson. And a great race by the most remarkable racehorse of all time.
More so, because Big Red just turned it on all at once. Up until his move on the first turn the race was moving along at a sedate, even-keeled pace, and Anderson's call reflected that: "Ecol Etage has it by two lengths, Torsion second by a length and then Sham third. Sham under an easy hold right now BUT HERE COMES SECRETARIAT!"
it didn't matter this horse was so damn fast he was in cruise mode the whole way. Yeah you saw how much faster he was going around the outside on that first trade. There's never been a pass like that.. NOT EVER.
That’s why I think his run in the Derby was actually more impressive than this. He broke slowly, ran that entire race at least 3 lanes off the rail, fought through traffic and still beat Northern Dancer’s record.
@@rickbateman2401 I believe Laffit Pincay, Sham’s jockey, has said the same re: Secretariat’s KD performance. That he came from so far back, going faster & faster each quarter, and still had the stamina to not only win, but break the Derby (and Churchill Downs) record. After such a display, I don’t think Laffit was the least bit surprised that Big Red could accomplish what he did in the remaining 2 races.
@@mvanhoose6365 I saw an interview with Ronnie and in the Belmont, he basically admitted he was along for the ride and the "Big Red" was out to destroy the field.
True but the fact that Ronnie knew and trusted him so much to get out of his way and let him run his race his way is what makes him such a great jockey!!
According to Turcotte, it was Secretariat who decided to go to the outside and pass all the other horses. He makes his move around 0:55, just when Chic Anderson says he's last. Within 200 yards, he went from last to first! Extraordinary!
I love that part - last to first right after Chic says he’s last. Just like the Belmont when Chic said “it’s almost a match race….” And about a second later Secretariat turned it from a match race to an outright romp.
yep about 15 seconds he passed the fastest horses in the world like they were in slo-mo. I knew right then he was gonna win the triple crown there wasn't a horse on the planet that could stay with him for very long.
That is absolutely incredible the horse made the decision. Secretariat was the Albert Einstein of horses, plus he has the heart of Winston Churchill. Nobody is going to beat that.
You are right...and wrong. You're correct in that *no Preakness starter* has bettered Secretariat's Preakness stakes record of 1:53 flat. But a horse has run 1 3/16 miles (the Preakness distance), on Pimlico's dirt surface, in faster time. In 1991, 4-year-old Farma Way won the Pimlico Special in 1:52 2/5, a stakes, track and North American record that still stands. (The North American record of 1:52 2/5 is shared with Riva Ridge, in a race in 1973 on another track.)

That was the name by which he was called by the people who first owned him (pre-syndication), and worked with him (e.g., his groom, the exercise riders, since he was foaled (or soon after). Big Red ... or "The Big Red Horse"... What a magnificent animal, smart and egotistical, as well -- as so many great stallion thoroughbreds are. I was a teenager, but I did see Secretariat win the Derby in May 1973, from the infield. It was absolutely thrilling.

He didn’t use his whip the whole race. Did he make a clicking noise or something? Or did Secretariat just decide on his own to start running for real?
I guess we’ll never really know. Only Ron Turcotte knows the feeling of being on top of such power. Secretariat was an awesome machine especially on that day. Whenever I feel a little down I go back & watch all 3 races & also American Pharoah & justify. Also Seattle Slew. 😎😎

I think about that Sports Century show I think it was where some guy, sorry, I forget his name, talks about Jack Nicklaus watched the race alone in his living room and as he came down the stretch he applauded and he cried. The other guy told him “Jack, don’t you understand? In your game, all of your life you’ve been striving for perfection. At the end of the Belmont you saw it.” That gets to me because I’m a golfer too. 😂
@Charles Ray No. Two workd records, one at 12 furlongs and one at 9. Still is the fastest horse in all three triple crown races. Among numerous other feats of greatness. No other horse would get near Secreterait when he was 100%.
I watched that race live. People at the time couldn't believe how Secretariat went by the field like they were standing still. It was almost like he wanted to play with them and then show how much better he was.

My fifth child was born 2 days before the Belmont..I was still in the hospital with her for the race. I was yelling so loud the nurses came running thinking something horrible was happening!!! But NO...I was cheering on the greatest horse of all time. I get my daughter a Secretariat momento every birthday 🐎
Similar to me. I was born the day before another momentous sporting event ... USAs win over the Soviets at Lake Placid. Better known as the Miracle on Ice due to Al Michaels yelling "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" as time expired.
Secretariat continues to hold the STAKES records for the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. *He does not hold the track record for 1 3/16 m. at Pimlico.* (By definition, track records are not held for individual races.) The Pimlico track record for that distance (1:52.55) is held by Farma Way, set in the 1991 Pimlico Special. Farma Way shares with Riva Ridge the North American dirt track record for that distance.
Just love that amazing burst of speed from Secretariat - at about 1:03. He just decided to run and passed the other horses like they were standing still. What a horse!

I swear... I don't think Turcotte ever needed the whip. Secretariat always seemed to sit back, toying with the other horses as he sized them up, then turned on the heat when he needed to in order to take over. What an amazing horse.
He always started last. However, in the Belmont he went straight to the front. But every other race he started last and saved his speed. Very smart move he did, then when the time was right, Ronnie would loosen the reins and he’d take off.

You also don't want to be caught up awkwardly in the bundle that always forms. You probably want to be in a good spot where you can easily move into the lead and not clip or get clipped by anyone else. Start slow and see where the others are settling.
It is probably just as remarkable as his performance in the Belmont. One needs to look at how far ahead he was from the REST of the field, excluding Sham. It looks like 15 or 16 lengths to me And Im betting that some of that 31 length margin comes from other jockeys shutting their horses down; otherwise they could have broken down
I remember reading at the time that Turcotte said he would actually spend the first part of a race just holding Secretariat back , and then at the appropriate moment make a chirping sound to him indicating it was time to cut loose. At that moment he said all he would do was hold on let it rip!
That's what I always thought, especially watching the Belmont. Turcotte spends much of the race standing in the stirrups and *leaning back* on the reins. Yet the horse ran every quarter faster than the one before! I always wondered how much faster he could have run if given his head.
Turcotte once said the only race Secretariat lost was his fault. The horse wanted to run but he held him back too long and Secretariat lost interest. At Pimlico there was a bias in the lane just off the rail. You didn't go wide on the turns due to the sharp turns and softer track on the outside. Turcotte let him go dispuite this knowledge because he knew his horse. So Secretariat passed most of the field in one turn with slower footing. Unbelievable performance by both horse and jockey!

He is the greatest horse to ever set foot on a track and I was fortunate enough to live close to Claiborne Farm so I visited him often. He was unbelievably gentle for a stallion and full of personality. I wish you could have met him.

Probably not. He was a once in a lifetime, or more, freak ( in the best sense of that word). I feel blessed to have lived to see him race in real time.
Yes, I swear he sped up before the finish line. Most will just coast at that point when they have a lead. Big Red decided he felt like going around again. You have to wonder how much further and faster he would have gone if he hadn't been pulled up.
Watched this when I was 16. Heard his name a lot back then. Watching it now I could see how powerful he was and how the other horses didn’t have a chance. Beautiful horse.
What secretariat did is called “The Move” Passed all like they were standing still. Still gives me chills watching it all these years later. Secretariat was created as the perfect horse and lived up to that. The greatest ever period

Although it's not caught by the camera, Turcotte instinctively brought Secretariat to the outside. The horse then went from last to first position in 180 yards! Ron Turcotte, riding this steed, raced into the history books. I believe he was literally ' along for the ride ' in all three contests. Secretariat was, and probably always will be, THE horse.
I've never watched this Preakness before. The explosiveness of Secretariat going from last to first was like they were standing still and he was was bounding past them with a few strides. Just an incredible race.
Before this race Secretariat was a classic come-from-behind horse. He came from behind in this one too, except he did it on the first turn not the far turn, lol. Breathaking move 47 years ago and in 2020.
Loved listening to Chic Anderson. Out of all the race callers I've heard to over the years, his voice was the easiest for me to listen to. His delivery was smooth, concise, uncluttered.
When he takes the lead you can see the size of his neck compared to the other horse. Then coming down the stretch you can compare his chest with the chest of Sham, once again, much bigger. This was probably the most perfect animal to ever live since human have been on the planet. It is a shame that they didn't finally give him the record in that race until recently when they re-examined the footage, he broke it easily.
When Turcotte put the big guy into second gear he literally passed horses like they were standing still. These were fresh horses it was only the second qtr mile. One of the most impressive moves in horse racing history. I watched that in disbelief all those years ago and still marvel at that super horse.
He actually missed it. He had just said, "Secretariat is last" then both he and the camera focused on the front of the field. Big Red chose that moment to drop the hammer and had already passed two horses when the announcer caught up.

The record for the Preakness is 1:53. This is that race. The winning horse still holds the record for all three races in the triple crown. 50 years and NO HORSE has run faster than Secretariat in ANY of the triple crown races. Half a century. Let that sink in.
Turcotte never touches Secretariat with his whip...in any of the Triple Crown races. It's as if they had an understanding and Ron was just along for the ride, while Pincay was beating Sham like a rented mule.
I swear it is as if Secretariat heard Chick Anderson say "And Secretariat is last.", because just after the word "last" leaves Anderson's lips, Secretariat began that incredible move in the first turn from the back to the front in less than 20 seconds. Incredible! As amazing as his run in the Belmont was, this moment has always been my favorite of his Triple Crown win.

@@GFHanks I agree. That’s what irritated me about the movie “Secretariat”. I actually really liked the movie and thought it was very well done. They messed up at the end though. Unless it was a “rights issue” they should have just used the actual call from the race. It would have been so much more authentic. I know they wanted to have the Gospel music at the end, which actually was kind of a nice touch, but I still would have preferred the actual call as it really was. As far I could tell the actual ending of “Miracle” with Al Michaels call was original. If it wasn’t, whoever they got to impersonate him sounded perfect.

And no, the time revision was not a "do-over," but a needed correction to the record. EVERYONE knew Secretariat set the stakes (and then-track) record in that race almost as soon as he crossed the finish line. The Maryland Racing Commission dug its heels in for 39 years, until forensic evidence provided irrefutable proof that he ran the race two seconds faster than the clock timed him that day. His race was played backwards, and that is when it was discovered where the malfunction was.
You have to think right around the time the announcer said "Secretariat is last...again" Ronnie was yelling "OK Red, stop f*cking around with 'em, let's go."
1:04 - 1:18 Astounding! I watched Secretariat at the age of 12 in all these Triple Crown races on TV. When he died in 1989, I remember as an adult crying over the news that day.
I was 11 in 1973.... The Belmont is my "I remember where I was and what I was doing" moment from my childhood. I can call that race with track announcer, by heart. I too cried when I heard he had died. Secretariat was our sports hero of the day!
I was 12 that summer, too! How thrilling it all was. This was the only one of the three races I watched live on TV. For the Belmont, we were driving on a family vacation, and I made Dad pull over so we could pull over and listen attentively on the radio.

I was a daily patron at Pimlico back in the late 80's (and 90's). Back then, you had the luxury of picking up your DRF at many Convenience Stores. As usual, I went in to grab my Form at a local 7-11. I hadn't heard the news about Secretariat yet, but it was broadcast loud and clear on the DRF cover headline. I believe it was worded "Secretariat Dead at 19". I could be wrong about that. It was a long time ago. One thing I do remember for certain, is that I was openly crying in front of the Newspaper Rack that day.

The horse had no choice in how much weight he carried, and in 1972 and 1973 in American racing, horses didn't carry those huge weights anymore. So your argument is moot. But if you think Phar Lap and Man O'War were better horses, I don't care, you're not the only one who believes that. I believe Secretariat was by far the best horse that ever raced. Charles Hatton, a writer for the Daily Racing Form, that saw both Man O'War and Secretariat agrees. He said of Secretariat "“You carry an ideal around in your head, and boy, I thought, ‘This is it.’ I never saw perfection before. I absolutely could not fault him in any way. And neither could the rest of them and that was the amazing thing about it. The body and the head and the eye and the general attitude. It was just incredible. I couldn’t believe my eyes, frankly.” It's near impossible to make direct comparisons between Secretariat, Man O'War and Phar Lap because they raced in different eras, on different surfaces, using different training methods, and in Phar Lap's case, entirely different countries. I would hazard a guess though, and say that Phar Lap never in his life raced against the quality of horses that Secretariat did. Secretariat raced almost entirely against champion horses for 2 consecutive years, and he consistently beat them, and in the Belmont and Marlborough Cup he absolutely destroyed them, and set world records in the process. The 1973 Marlborough Cup that Secretariat won in world record time, is regarded by some as the greatest assembly of horses for a race ever. Add to that what he did not just in the Belmont, but all three triple crown races, and I am convinced Secretariat was by far the greatest horse ever. Now, did he go undefeated? Nope, but rarely does any horse or athlete. Secretariat had reasons why he lost those races, but there's no doubt they mar his record, and give people a reason to look to other horses as being the best ever. I accept that. I disagree with them, but I accept it. It's too bad he never got to race as a four year old, because if he had, he would have left absolutely no doubt who was the greatest horse to ever step on a race track. Anyways, enjoy the races!

I've said, for years, that Secretariat made the people who were around him, legends. And the people around Secretariat, made him immortal. Chic Anderson was a prime example. In my opinion, the greatest race call ever was the '73 Preakness. But, it went somewhat unnoticed, due to the enormity of what occurred in the Belmont. Couple the "Tremendous Machine" remark, with the greatest individual performance in sports history, and it's understandable. But, for my money, the Preakness call remains the "gold standard" of racing calls. And Chic Anderson was, is, and always will be a legend.

You're exactly right. Penny Chenery said a jockey didn't have much control of him, but it didn't really matter. She also said about the Preakness that his surge in the first turn had to be what the horse wanted to do because Ronnie wouldn't have asked him to run that early in the race. Best thing a jockey could was to let him run his own race and not fall off. :)
@@kwgrid When you look at those 3 races, they're amazing in what they show about Red. The Derby was run in his standard manner. The Preakness had the totally unusual rush for the lead on the first turn that was obviously Red's choice. Then the crazy, wild Belmont that was entirely The Horse's idea from the time he came out of the gate! He was doing all the thinking and they were smart enough to let him do it

I had the pleasure of being there that day in Baltimore. As a previous horse owner I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed such acceleration from a horse as he displayed in the first turn. It was like he was racing $5000. Claimers😂. Everyone talks about the Belmont and yes it was impressive but i think this race was his coming out party❤

Did you own her when she was racing or get her later ? I don't know how far she was running but it seems they should have shortened her races.

Definitely, same with Sham, all 3 races were really about those two. Chic was the best, no question.

More so, because Big Red just turned it on all at once. Up until his move on the first turn the race was moving along at a sedate, even-keeled pace, and Anderson's call reflected that: "Ecol Etage has it by two lengths, Torsion second by a length and then Sham third. Sham under an easy hold right now BUT HERE COMES SECRETARIAT!"

What makes this even more amazing is that Secretariat came from the outside not from the rail so he had to travel that much further
it didn't matter this horse was so damn fast he was in cruise mode the whole way. Yeah you saw how much faster he was going around the outside on that first trade. There's never been a pass like that.. NOT EVER.

That’s why I think his run in the Derby was actually more impressive than this. He broke slowly, ran that entire race at least 3 lanes off the rail, fought through traffic and still beat Northern Dancer’s record.
@@rickbateman2401 I believe Laffit Pincay, Sham’s jockey, has said the same re: Secretariat’s KD performance. That he came from so far back, going faster & faster each quarter, and still had the stamina to not only win, but break the Derby (and Churchill Downs) record.
After such a display, I don’t think Laffit was the least bit surprised that Big Red could accomplish what he did in the remaining 2 races.
Ronnie turcotte truly was just along for the ride.

According to Turcotte, it was Secretariat who decided to go to the outside and pass all the other horses. He makes his move around 0:55, just when Chic Anderson says he's last. Within 200 yards, he went from last to first! Extraordinary!
I love that part - last to first right after Chic says he’s last. Just like the Belmont when Chic said “it’s almost a match race….” And about a second later Secretariat turned it from a match race to an outright romp.
yep about 15 seconds he passed the fastest horses in the world like they were in slo-mo. I knew right then he was gonna win the triple crown there wasn't a horse on the planet that could stay with him for very long.

You are right...and wrong. You're correct in that *no Preakness starter* has bettered Secretariat's Preakness stakes record of 1:53 flat.
But a horse has run 1 3/16 miles (the Preakness distance), on Pimlico's dirt surface, in faster time. In 1991, 4-year-old Farma Way won the Pimlico Special in 1:52 2/5, a stakes, track and North American record that still stands.
(The North American record of 1:52 2/5 is shared with Riva Ridge, in a race in 1973 on another track.)

What a magnificent animal, smart and egotistical, as well -- as so many great stallion thoroughbreds are. I was a teenager, but I did see Secretariat win the Derby in May 1973, from the infield. It was absolutely thrilling.

He didn’t use his whip the whole race. Did he make a clicking noise or something? Or did Secretariat just decide on his own to start running for real?
I guess we’ll never really know. Only Ron Turcotte knows the feeling of being on top of such power. Secretariat was an awesome machine especially on that day. Whenever I feel a little down I go back & watch all 3 races & also American Pharoah & justify. Also Seattle Slew. 😎😎

I think about that Sports Century show I think it was where some guy, sorry, I forget his name, talks about Jack Nicklaus watched the race alone in his living room and as he came down the stretch he applauded and he cried. The other guy told him “Jack, don’t you understand? In your game, all of your life you’ve been striving for perfection. At the end of the Belmont you saw it.” That gets to me because I’m a golfer too. 😂

The Pimlico track record for that distance (1:52.55) is held by Farma Way, set in the 1991 Pimlico Special. Farma Way shares with Riva Ridge the North American dirt track record for that distance.
Farma Way was a four-year-old in 1991. Horses don't typically hit their peak speed as three-year-olds.

He always started last. However, in the Belmont he went straight to the front. But every other race he started last and saved his speed. Very smart move he did, then when the time was right, Ronnie would loosen the reins and he’d take off.

You also don't want to be caught up awkwardly in the bundle that always forms. You probably want to be in a good spot where you can easily move into the lead and not clip or get clipped by anyone else. Start slow and see where the others are settling.
It is probably just as remarkable as his performance in the Belmont. One needs to look at how far ahead he was from the REST of the field, excluding Sham. It looks like 15 or 16 lengths to me
And Im betting that some of that 31 length margin comes from other jockeys shutting their horses down; otherwise they could have broken down
What a feeling it must have been to ride Secretariat.
I remember reading at the time that Turcotte said he would actually spend the first part of a race just holding Secretariat back , and then at the appropriate moment make a chirping sound to him indicating it was time to cut loose. At that moment he said all he would do was hold on let it rip!
That's what I always thought, especially watching the Belmont. Turcotte spends much of the race standing in the stirrups and *leaning back* on the reins. Yet the horse ran every quarter faster than the one before! I always wondered how much faster he could have run if given his head.
Looking at this race, what you said looks right. Turcotte is just hanging on while Big Red turns it on. I don't see him use the crop once
Turcotte once said the only race Secretariat lost was his fault. The horse wanted to run but he held him back too long and Secretariat lost interest.
At Pimlico there was a bias in the lane just off the rail. You didn't go wide on the turns due to the sharp turns and softer track on the outside. Turcotte let him go dispuite this knowledge because he knew his horse. So Secretariat passed most of the field in one turn with slower footing.

He is the greatest horse to ever set foot on a track and I was fortunate enough to live close to Claiborne Farm so I visited him often. He was unbelievably gentle for a stallion and full of personality. I wish you could have met him.

Watched this when I was 16. Heard his name a lot back then. Watching it now I could see how powerful he was and how the other horses didn’t have a chance. Beautiful horse.

Although it's not caught by the camera, Turcotte instinctively brought Secretariat to the outside. The horse then went from last to first position in 180 yards! Ron Turcotte, riding this steed, raced into the history books. I believe he was literally ' along for the ride ' in all three contests. Secretariat was, and probably always will be, THE horse.
That move from last to first was jaw-dropping...and the race was literally over at that point.
I've never watched this Preakness before. The explosiveness of Secretariat going from last to first was like they were standing still and he was was bounding past them with a few strides. Just an incredible race.
Every time I watch that big horse I am overwhelmed by how fast he could run. He was truly a champion.

Loved listening to Chic Anderson. Out of all the race callers I've heard to over the years, his voice was the easiest for me to listen to. His delivery was smooth, concise, uncluttered.

When he takes the lead you can see the size of his neck compared to the other horse. Then coming down the stretch you can compare his chest with the chest of Sham, once again, much bigger. This was probably the most perfect animal to ever live since human have been on the planet. It is a shame that they didn't finally give him the record in that race until recently when they re-examined the footage, he broke it easily.
When Turcotte put the big guy into second gear he literally passed horses like they were standing still.

He actually missed it. He had just said, "Secretariat is last" then both he and the camera focused on the front of the field. Big Red chose that moment to drop the hammer and had already passed two horses when the announcer caught up.

The record for the Preakness is 1:53. This is that race. The winning horse still holds the record for all three races in the triple crown. 50 years and NO HORSE has run faster than Secretariat in ANY of the triple crown races. Half a century. Let that sink in.

I swear it is as if Secretariat heard Chick Anderson say "And Secretariat is last.", because just after the word "last" leaves Anderson's lips, Secretariat began that incredible move in the first turn from the back to the front in less than 20 seconds. Incredible! As amazing as his run in the Belmont was, this moment has always been my favorite of his Triple Crown win.

@@GFHanks I agree. That’s what irritated me about the movie “Secretariat”. I actually really liked the movie and thought it was very well done. They messed up at the end though. Unless it was a “rights issue” they should have just used the actual call from the race. It would have been so much more authentic. I know they wanted to have the Gospel music at the end, which actually was kind of a nice touch, but I still would have preferred the actual call as it really was. As far I could tell the actual ending of “Miracle” with Al Michaels call was original. If it wasn’t, whoever they got to impersonate him sounded perfect.

He went from last to first. He outran the field from the outside. What an amazing feat. RIPP, Big Red Machine. Bless Sham, too. His cousin was a freak of nature. If ever God made two horses, it was Secretariat and Man O’ War.
And no, the time revision was not a "do-over," but a needed correction to the record. EVERYONE knew Secretariat set the stakes (and then-track) record in that race almost as soon as he crossed the finish line. The Maryland Racing Commission dug its heels in for 39 years, until forensic evidence provided irrefutable proof that he ran the race two seconds faster than the clock timed him that day. His race was played backwards, and that is when it was discovered where the malfunction was.

1:04 - 1:18 Astounding! I watched Secretariat at the age of 12 in all these Triple Crown races on TV. When he died in 1989, I remember as an adult crying over the news that day.
I was 11 in 1973.... The Belmont is my "I remember where I was and what I was doing" moment from my childhood. I can call that race with track announcer, by heart. I too cried when I heard he had died. Secretariat was our sports hero of the day!
I was 12 that summer, too! How thrilling it all was. This was the only one of the three races I watched live on TV. For the Belmont, we were driving on a family vacation, and I made Dad pull over so we could pull over and listen attentively on the radio.

I was a daily patron at Pimlico back in the late 80's (and 90's). Back then, you had the luxury of picking up your DRF at many Convenience Stores. As usual, I went in to grab my Form at a local 7-11. I hadn't heard the news about Secretariat yet, but it was broadcast loud and clear on the DRF cover headline. I believe it was worded "Secretariat Dead at 19". I could be wrong about that. It was a long time ago. One thing I do remember for certain, is that I was openly crying in front of the Newspaper Rack that day.

I believe Secretariat was by far the best horse that ever raced. Charles Hatton, a writer for the Daily Racing Form, that saw both Man O'War and Secretariat agrees. He said of Secretariat "“You carry an ideal around in your head, and boy, I thought, ‘This is it.’ I never saw perfection before. I absolutely could not fault him in any way. And neither could the rest of them and that was the amazing thing about it. The body and the head and the eye and the general attitude. It was just incredible. I couldn’t believe my eyes, frankly.”
It's near impossible to make direct comparisons between Secretariat, Man O'War and Phar Lap because they raced in different eras, on different surfaces, using different training methods, and in Phar Lap's case, entirely different countries. I would hazard a guess though, and say that Phar Lap never in his life raced against the quality of horses that Secretariat did. Secretariat raced almost entirely against champion horses for 2 consecutive years, and he consistently beat them, and in the Belmont and Marlborough Cup he absolutely destroyed them, and set world records in the process. The 1973 Marlborough Cup that Secretariat won in world record time, is regarded by some as the greatest assembly of horses for a race ever. Add to that what he did not just in the Belmont, but all three triple crown races, and I am convinced Secretariat was by far the greatest horse ever.
Now, did he go undefeated? Nope, but rarely does any horse or athlete. Secretariat had reasons why he lost those races, but there's no doubt they mar his record, and give people a reason to look to other horses as being the best ever. I accept that. I disagree with them, but I accept it. It's too bad he never got to race as a four year old, because if he had, he would have left absolutely no doubt who was the greatest horse to ever step on a race track. Anyways, enjoy the races!

I've said, for years, that Secretariat made the people who were around him, legends. And the people around Secretariat, made him immortal. Chic Anderson was a prime example. In my opinion, the greatest race call ever was the '73 Preakness. But, it went somewhat unnoticed, due to the enormity of what occurred in the Belmont. Couple the "Tremendous Machine" remark, with the greatest individual performance in sports history, and it's understandable. But, for my money, the Preakness call remains the "gold standard" of racing calls. And Chic Anderson was, is, and always will be a legend.

You're exactly right. Penny Chenery said a jockey didn't have much control of him, but it didn't really matter. She also said about the Preakness that his surge in the first turn had to be what the horse wanted to do because Ronnie wouldn't have asked him to run that early in the race. Best thing a jockey could was to let him run his own race and not fall off. :)
@@kwgrid When you look at those 3 races, they're amazing in what they show about Red. The Derby was run in his standard manner. The Preakness had the totally
unusual rush for the lead on the first turn that was obviously Red's choice. Then the crazy, wild Belmont that was entirely The Horse's idea from the time he came out of the gate! He was doing all the thinking and they were smart enough to let him do it
I love it Secretariat is last and like a shot it's the hell with this lets go and he takes off like a rocket ship around the outside.

I had the pleasure of being there that day in Baltimore. As a previous horse owner I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed such acceleration from a horse as he displayed in the first turn. It was like he was racing $5000. Claimers😂. Everyone talks about the Belmont and yes it was impressive but i think this race was his coming out party❤
