    I've heard the saying, "Construct a life you don't need a vacation from." Sometimes I think that seems out of touch, like life should be luxurious and lovely all of the time. But I think it might mean that we need to redesign life a little so that it's not so high strung and needing to be escaped from. Plenty of breaks and quiet time rather than margaritas on a beach.

    My burnout was very physical to where I basically had to spend weeks in bed, had widespread pain, chronic dizziness , all sorts of things, because I was under chronic stress for so long and I had no self awareness to recognise this. Still working on it.

    The doctor is a gifted communicator. I like how she inserted herself into the narrative, showing that she too is human and prone to burnout. Too many other medical professionals would try to distance themselves personally and stick to presenting the 'objective data'. I got a lot out of this conversation, thanks.

    At about 33min into this, The doctor is talking about how she has conditioned herself to control her stress response. A person is able to do this but not forever. Overtime controlling or conditioning a stress response will eventually wear on the person. This doctor is young, and I know that over time, no human could keep up that pace. I personally believe every job, especially a high stress demanding one, has a life expectancy. I found this video Very educational and I appreciate all of your hard work in making these videos.       I am an ER doctor who plans to go into Ophthalmology.
      This is absolutely true. Sometimes managing stress is about making healthier choices. Including occupational choices, if one can make them.
      I remember reading in medical textbooks, if someone has really bad allergies, you can advise them a role change. However, since medical professionals require re training, it's imperative to make better choices early on in careers.

    I have this. I kept saying “I’m done” “I’m out” and my biggest one is “I just don’t care anymore”. Forcing myself to work and the best decision was to say I’m taking a break. The issue is I’ve not yet seen anyone talking about self employed people. All seems to be focused around workers rather than business owners.
    Just started my journey though so I hope I’ll find more info :)

      I'm on that boat now. Reading this comment was like hearing someone echo back to me what I am going through. I am looking around to see what self employment opprtunities there are that enable working from home without putting me further into a stress induced tizzy, and I am feeling very overwhelmed not knowing where to look for legit remote work that doesn't involve being on the phone all day.

      @@zillagrl24 try customer service chat boxes. I spoke to a bloke the other day at the job centre and he said about ebay customer service so keep your eyes peeled. There will be lots somewhere. So much is online these days. A really good book I’ve been listening to is the grieving brain by Mary-Frances O’Connor. I’m on scribed but it will be elsewhere. Since this comment some suggested it could be complicated grief for me. The issues is so many things overlap so it’s hard to know for sure what it is. Good luck though 😀

    I recently took some vacation time to help with my burnout (I’m in the social work/disability services field), and it was miserable. The only good that came of it was the realization that I was trying to run away from my stress and stressors, and all I did was pack it up and bring it with me. Which led to guilt over being stressed while on leave, and so on… such a terrible and isolating loop to be stuck in.

      My son took me on a dream cruise 2 yrs ago. He thought I needed a vacation. He was right. I did need a break, but after realizing that a week on a wonderful vacation was basically wasted. I couldn't enjoy it like I knew I would have if I hadn't been in the aftermath of burnout. It was as if I was too removed from the experience to truly enjoy it. The trip definitely helped, but I felt so sad because I knew I was not as connected to the good feelings I would have experienced if I hadn't been so burned out!

    I can really relate to this conversation. I worked as a surgical nurse in a level one trauma center. I’ve seen numerous times the worst it can get. After 18 months of retirement I’m still trying to find joy in my life again. I always assume the bad things will happen. I saw them on a weekly if not daily basis. I never used my sick days enough.

    I would say that the body is responding to “what’s wrong” in the world. It’s not supposed to be this way. Our government can and should fix it. They are overloading workers with responsibilities while cutting back on staff! It’s wrong! Take your sick days without hesitation. You only have one body.. love it and treat it with respect. Take your vacation days too.

      So...the government forcing people by threat of violence " financial or physical -this is the only power the government has" will reduce bodies responding to "what's wrong " how about individuals just make different choices ...the only real way anything changes. Using a mob of people to force others to do what you think is right for them should be obviously bad. A harm on people.

    Last year, burnout, anxiety and depression hit me like a semi truck. I'm happy to say that after a year of work, EMDR and regular therapy. I am doing much better. This channel also had a big part in helping. Thank you.

      I'm so sorry I'm just now seeing this! So first off, don't tell yourself you shouldn't be having burn out, I mean just living is exhausting so don't see yourself short. My treatment was regular therapy for probably 4 or 5 months so we could find the biggest issues and then tackle them with EMDR. EMDR therapy was by far the most helpful thing for me, I have no idea why it worked, but boy did it help. With my burnout, I had horrible panic attacks and those symptoms led to issues with my stomach and IBS. EMDR got the anxiety under control, which helped the IBS and ultimately, fixed the burnout. Basically, I just had to take a step back and realize that I didn't need to run myself into the ground to make my boss/wife/family happy, I am allowed time to relax too. So that stuff really helped. EMDR was a quicker process, taking 2 months from start to finish. I highly recommend it as long as you go in open minded. I hope you see this, and start to feel better. You got this.

    I am reading the bible now, just like McAdam to wind down and relax in the evening. Quiting social media also reduced my stress and anxiety. I'm trying to be a bit more 'little house on the prairy. It works. Thank you so much.👍

    What a great video, as a person with ADHD burnout is quite common. I've also felt a feeling called Anedonia where you are so overworked and stressed that you feel like just pulling the pin and not continuing. I think it's so important to take a step back and observe whats going on and considering your options to give yourself a bit of breathing room.

      @Heyu7her3 yep sure is, I'm newly diagnosed with ADHD and am only just finding out how to manage it. I did alot of therapy previous to my diagnosis which has helped me notice ADHD burnout which often leads to depression and feeling of helplessness.

    I just discovered something new if someone wants to try it…I’ve been dealing with some trauma responses and got back in to journaling by doing “rage journaling.” So what I did was write it all out scratch it all out on the paper…instead of lashing out I wrote it and let it all out so I can let it all go!! Doing this is helping me to start journaling again! I seriously felt better after!! I haven’t been able to do anything today bc I’m sick so having this as another outlet is so great! Definitely underestimated tool to add to your toolbox!!

    From personal experience, be careful when your old brilliant manager gets promoted or retires. This has happened to me twice and the replacement boss was hopeless, he will blame you when he makes a mistake.
    I stayed on too long trying to be loyal to people I worked with until I was burnt out and didn't care. My strong advice try for a year at most, and then leave even if you have take a much lower position, you will be much happier and more successful.
    ( PS the whole company only lasted another 2 years and it was really bad working there)

    Thanks for this video. I had every symptom you talk about at the beginning of 2023. I found your TH-cam channel and your video about scheduling worry time everyday. This was a game changer for me in finding a sustainable way to manage chronic stress. I started off with a list of 30 things I was worried about but after 4 days the worry list was down to 10 items and within a week it reduced to 4. This improved my sleep massively. By 2023 I’d changed my job, lost 35 pounds and could recognise when I felt stressed and had the mechanisms to cope with my feelings of stress.

    This is definitely me. I’m numb emotionless and it’s scary. I don’t feel anything for myself and try and keep myself to myself so I don’t have to worry or care about others, even family, my older children. I can see how ppl see me but I can’t see a light at the end of the tunnel.
    My dr diagnosed me fibro and menopausal. I had childhood trauma and felt abandoned too. I’ve tried to live a normal life and did to an extent until 2019 I gave up. I haven’t recovered since.

    I was already struggling with this with my PTSD, and then my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two months ago and immediately got sepsis from his port being put in. He died at the start of the month. Taking care of him (even though he was in the hospital and rehab facility) was more than a full time job for my mom and myself. It was practically impossible to take care of ourselves. The depersonalization was real. Even dissociation at some points. I'm trying very hard to dig out of it now, while also grieving very intensely. I do have a few missions however that's helping keep going. One is to hike his flag to the top of MT. Washington. The other, is at 42, go back to school to become a therapist. His passing, as horrible as it is, is making that a possibility. It's been in my plans for years as I've been on my journey being a survivor of clergy abuse. ( Only realized it at 37) It was part of his wishes for me to go forth and help people and for once in my life, I feel I have purpose. Anyhow, great video. Thank you!

      Sorry for your loss. I can relate to the sudden traumatic loss of a parent. I think it's inspiring that you're trying to turn a negative into a positive by honoring your father's legacy and moving in a new career direction. Best of luck to you on your healing journey. Sometimes it helps me to think of death as not necessarily the end but rather a new beginning -- merely the next phase of a cycle.

    My husband died last year & I'm going through menopause too. Burnout is an understatement ! Life Extension Neuro-Mag - 3 a day - and 1/4 cup ground flax seeds every day has stopped my hot flashes. Joe Dispenza meditation and Wim Hof breathing every day are essential for my emotional grounding. My biggest challenge is sleep. My subconscious mind wakes me up. Getting to sleep is easy, but staying asleep is hard. Have tried ashwaganda and other natural remedies, but no luck. I refuse to go on sleeping pills.

      Not sure where you live, but a microdose of THC (5mg) helps my sleep immensely. I just eat a tiny piece of regulated edible before bed and even if I do wake up I fall back asleep right away.

      I too am going through menopause (peri) and I'm unwilling to suffer with it. I've requested a referral to a team of OBGYNs in order to get on Hormone Replacement Therapy. Fingers crossed the 20 symptoms I'm experiencing will dissipate. All the best on your path. Our society needs to address women's health... so little education around menopause.

    Not feeling personally vested...yep. I have returned back to the classroom after a long hiatus. All that she mentions is true in my profession as well. Hands are tied and admin are not interested. Burnout is an imbalance of effort vs. positive outcomes. We assign too much value to our professions. We need to let go of other people's notions of what makes a person valuable, and let go of the self-sacrifice because it doesn't serve you in the long run.

    This found me at the right time. Can you elaborate on work-from-home or remote work burnout? I'm a structural engineer and an HSP so if there are tips for managing stress sustainably for stressful jobs, on top of not having that in-person environment, I'd be really interested to see what information is out there on this.

      What helped me recover from burn out as a HSP in a high stress job was tons of silence, consumed foods and supplements that lowered cortisol, and did a lot of visualizing meditations where I'd dump the stress. Recovering from burn out takes time. I now specialize in helping women recover from burn out because of my expereince. Hope this helps!

    I still feel the aftereffects or effects of burnout from studies midyear in which I had to really cram on top of no support etc whilst the place Im renting rained inside/leaked when it was raining (horrid real estate agents to deal with to boot), and I have known for a while I needed to get onto it it and understand/manage it better. Very thankful for this chat/will listen a few times and have just subbed. Thankyou muchly

    I am so glad I found this video. Burnout has been in connection with being in the workplace and I feel that burnout especially from dealing with complex trauma is incredibly underrated in the medical field. I have experienced both and my burnout from a recent traumatic experience exacerbated by unresolved childhood trauma has lasted over 5 years. I look forward to seeing more research done around this because when you are a survivor of complex trauma the shame and embarrassment associated with any symptom is difficult to overcome and when you are experiencing severe burnout and heightened anxiety and stress it’s a very hard way to live. Thank you for this great vid 🙏

    Tuning in/ Mindfulness - I am integrating Social Emotional Learning in my art classes. Pause, look down to get in your own space, and notice how our body is feeling in the head, neck, chest. Then I described, "My neck feels tense, I think because I am tired and really want classes to go well. My chest feels warm because I love being with you and doing art. Ok choose a type of line, jagged, or curved that you are drawn to represent that today. The line or color you choose may be different tomorrow. Expressing ourselves in art is subjective, meaning it changes." Burnout - Personally, I have struggled with taking entire weekends off and evenings. It is very much a balancing act. Putting your all into work that you love and pulling back so we are not totally exhausted and can't give. It's Sunday and I have my major observation Tuesday. I really want to tie SEL, communication skills together with Art Critique which I haven't taught yet. I am taking away from this video to connect with friends or colleagues as I can. I can't give hours and hours to belly dance or yoga but I can take some time to enjoy being in my body and love the practice. Thank you. ;D

    This episode made me realize how much I appreciate and resonate with Emma's approach to managing anxiety. While I don't think Dr. Hays's advice is wrong for some people, "pause and breath" is something I've heard over and over again that never really clicked with me. Emma's other suggestions for activating the parasympathetic response such as EFT tapping have proved much more effective for me. Additionally, I can't stress how much of a breakthrough Emma's talks about how "you are not your thoughts" and letting go of guilt and shame for automatic negative thoughts and intrusive thoughts have been for me. Instead of judging myself and spiraling into anxiety because of a negative thought, I can let the thought pass through my brain without engaging with it. Thank you Emma for your unique perspectives and approaches to dealing with anxiety, you have helped me break free of cycles I had been repeating since I was in middle school.

    That practice of 30 seconds would be so helpful and valuable for kids too. It’s so easy to get completely wrapped up in the emotion of being stressed and overwhelmed that we don’t even realize when it’s happening. We can go from 1 to 100 in a matter of seconds. And the physical after effects take forever to subside leaving you spent and exhausted time after time. Perhaps being able to realize this can give us the grace to allow ourselves to step back and breathe, really breathe.

    When life is objectively hard, burn out management becomes your main life mission. Being burnout focused is another invisible labour & labour is, in & of itself an energetic exchange. I feel this so much & am constantly checking my burnout account to see where I'm at.

    People have too much on their plates - leading to feelings on both sides like rejection or not being able to do it all.... And the problem is simple we only can fit so much on our plate. People get stuck doing too much and others can't find enough to do feeling unseen or rejected just because a person or organization can only do so much (why community needs them - are they truly seen?)

    This was me during lockdown with a baby and a child that I had to homeschool, plus working from home with no childcare support. Then I caught COVID - I was told to rest - how do you rest with a baby and a child to care for? Now nearly 4 years later I’m still severely ill with CFS. There was no alternative and no way out.

    I am there, and have been since 2007. It's job related, but there is trauma, too. I am a teacher, and mainly just work because of the paycheck. I don't dread it, but it isn't worth me spending energy

    Is there another level of burnout? Past the first three that were highlighted. I'm past all of those. And now I am physically ill. I've lost over 50 lbs in a short period of time. I have been in a burnout for almost a year now. I work in the healthcare industry and I work the NOC shift.

    I’m still trying to pull out of a hole from 2020 burnout but I had mold exposure that sent my stress bucket overflowing. I’m still detoxing but it impacted my nervous system terribly. I had my thyroid removed and kept getting worse. Thyroid levels are finally perfect but I am horrible anxiety and fear at times. Antidepressants have caused me more issues than good. My adrenals are producing cortisol but it isn’t being metabolized properly due to the mold toxins. I have brain fog, derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, panic, vagal nerve dysfunction, depression, and I can’t complete day to day tasks or even drive. I don’t know how to overcome.

      Thyroid is part of the endocrine/ lymphatic system. Maybe acupuncture or massage therapy could help? Good luck!

    How would low level but constant states of stress and hyper vigilance be addressed? Although somewhat self-imposed, there are always environmental factors available to justify and confirm your "need" for constant elevated awareness and responsiveness, such that it becomes almost a set state, almost a refusal or denial of the parasympathetic state, a reduced parasympathetic tone, if you will, from chronic stress, where even stress reduction exercises are only moderately effective.
    Some may have lost their whole-body ability to resolve stress. How can one regain this ability, the thrill of a hug, good music, etc.? It seems to me an important feeling for regulating stress, rarely if ever discussed in western medicine or psychology. Maladaptive attempts to compensate for this lost feeling, and the subsequent inability to reduce stress, might axcount for many of the unresolvable ills in western societies.
    Perhaps a broader subject than this forum or perhaps only a passing thought. Great talk, BTW!

      You can hug an animal, or a tree. It will create the same chemical reaction. But if that's also not possible, just being in the room with a safe person can help. Or a safe, calm TV show, even. You also don't need to know what you are feeling. Just express it somehow. And/or notice the physical sensations in your body. Like.. your heartbeat, tingling in your hands, warm belly.. etc. (Anything and everything is correct.) - These are what feelings consist of.
