From the looks of it, you have a 2024 Wired Freedom Gen I. This is essentially a beta version of the current dual battery 2024 Gen II version. The Achilles heal on the Gen I version is that if you go up steep hills for prolonged distances, this bike will overheat and consequently shutdown. Since I'm still waiting on delivery of the Freedom, when I saw the upgrades they did I got a little worried. I contacted Wired and they said I'd be getting the new one. The new one has bigger brakes 205mm 4 piston Gemma ( Gemma is a Taiwan company, I hear the brakes are good but finding parts stateside looks difficult so far). Bigger W motor (3200W / 153NM). Second battery (fits in rack 15AH). Balancer for 2 battery setup. Longer front fender (w/ 2 extra stays that bolt to the fork). Same headlight. New slimmer display w/ plain English programming. Keeping the price the same after adding the dual battery balances out the shipping charge in my opinion. The price may not stay the same for long though. With the upgrades on Wired's new bikes, it puts Wired ahead of E-cells, in my opinion.
Hey Roger; great review. About the batteries: I heard somewhere that these types of batteries don't like to be stored while fully charged. I don't know what that means in scientific/electrical speak; however, that's what I usually do. I have a AZUB Ti-Fly X recumbent trike with a Shimano E6000 mid-drive at the bottom bracket. Where my batteries used to charge and post a full range state of 103 miles, now they are only posting a full range state of 98 miles. I heard it's best to store your batteries partially charged; not full or empty. So, maybe I've been destroying my batteries without knowing it? Don't know, but the capacity is definitely less. Interesting commentary on selling price and which bike to purchase. When I first ordered my e-bike (first one ever), it was a Wired Freedom. The next day I saw the Ecells. Eventually I canceled my Wired order and purchased the Ecells 5 Star. Although the machines are nearly identical I thought the Ecell bike had better features and execution. Also, with the no tax and no shipping Ecells offered I was able to purchase a few minor upgrades (tires, torque sensor) and still saved over $300. You're correct though, both companies are dueling it out, and both have offered major upgrades to their products in the last few weeks. My 5 Stars should be here in a month. I'll let you know what I think of it. Take care; glad to see you are still getting it done out there. Stay safe, Brother. All the best.
Correct. I never store fully charged. Owning many LIPO RC cars, I've had to stay on top of them. Batteries will degrade, I'm just not sure 3 months and 500 miles is acceptable... RUGER
Yeah if you're not going to use it for a while it's best to keep it within 30 to 50%. Also good to not charge it to 100% often, and not to completely drain it. Best rule of thumb for maximum life is to keep it between 80 and 20% as much as possible, while not storing it at high charge.
Good review Ruger. That skipping gears is a matter of adjustment. My sister's bike was having the same issue and she took it to an REI by her house they did an adjustment on her derailer and brakes for $30 and she said it shifts like butter now.
@@RugersLastResort My 2024 Freedom has skipped a tooth in 6th but mostly 7th gear when I'm on the peddle hard, from day one. It's not the derailer adjustment, because mine is adjusted correctly with perfect alignment. I think it's because there is not enough tooth contact for the chain to grab on that dinky little 7th gear sprocket. Also, at the same time in 7th there is less spring tension on the derailer arm spring compared to the larger lower gears. My friend Joe's freedom does the same exact thing. Not exactly sure what the fix is on that one? Maybe try and find a way to get more spring tension on that arm to help keep the chain planted on that gear a little better? I don't know..
I have owned an ebike and have 3600 miles on my bike. My pet peeve is people who speed on trails mostly used by pedestrians. Yesterday a guy flew by me doing 25 mph+. A walking trail that is used by 95% walkers, occasionally with strollers. If you want to fly... stay on the roads. Those guys will get us banned on trails!
@@jstanovic the class 2 20 mph is more than fare. Thats fast. These guys are just gonna keep pushing the limits until the feds require strict regulation and plates and insurance
@@polok890 I have no trouble with speed. Just be respectful on the walking trails. My thoughts are that if you want to go 40+ mph...get a scooter. I have a motorcycle with 112,000 m8les on it.
When I hiked the Colorado trail some years back, heck people on regular mountain bikes coming down hills were going like bats out of hell, and sometimes you had to jump out of their way. The only difference with e-bikes is sometimes that they're going faster uphill and flats now.
I got my Wired Freedom back in Sept '23 and I too love it overall. I may ride it once to three times a week and 5 to 20 miles per ride and charge it pretty much every time after I ride it so it's ready to go all the time. I too have noticed that it only charges my battery to 66 and change volts.
I'm charging to 66.7 to 66.9 anymore. Not a real big deal but one would expect more from "SAMSUNG" branded batteries....maybe that's all they are...branded! RUGER
It's best to keep your battery within 90% and 10%. Even better if you can keep it within 80% and 20% (the ideal). The more you charge lithium ion batteries to 100% and/or leave it charged high for periods of time, the more you degrade the battery faster.
A great, even handed review. I, too have noticed a slight drop in my voltage when fully charged. Didn't know it was a thing, since this is my first battery operated bike. Not gonna worry about it until it gets real. I get plenty of juice for my needs. My worry is the coming summer, when my garage turns into a toaster oven. I guess I'll have to bring the battery indoors to preserve it. I put almost 1500 miles (!!) on mine since February. The bike is holding up like a tank in the most challenging rides in the desert. A true beast. So, no regrets at all. However, my next one is going to be an E Cell Dual Star which is a similar bike, with better components and dual batteries. Cheers!
Thanks. Yeah, depending on the summer heat, you could be better served by storing in the AC environment. I've kept plenty of LIPO's in my garage over summers with no degradation, but I wouldn't recommend doing that. My next bike will be 72 volts - brand, yet to be determined 😎 RUGER
Great review. I just purchased my Wired Freedom (blue) today, very excited to get the bike. Now I have a 2020 Rad Power Bike Radrover ST, I’ve had it for 4 years now and have just a little over 6,000 miles on it. Was thinking of getting another Rad Power bike, but after watching the videos on TH-cam about this bike I’ve changed my mind. I’m looking forward to being able to go up hills a little faster now. Thanks for the information in your video.
My neighbor's Rad Mini he bought in 2016, still holds an 80% charge. He hasn't had a car in over 10 years. Props to Radpower for building great ebikes that last. I don't have one.
My battery charges to 66.6 and 66.7 on a good day. At about 1500 miles . I've had the controller mounts fail and the charger fan would make a terrible sound .I let wired know and they replaced both items immediately.
Your battery is getting out of balance. You need a charger that will continue to output power after the pack is "charged". The BMS should start to balance the pack, but it will take awhile.
From what I understand the stock chargers that get sent out with many PEV's aren't exactly perfect. Many of them "overcharge" and that can be damaging to the longevity of your battery. I'm sure what the exact voltage on your battery is supposed to be but if the charger is consistently going over that then it can degenerate the life of the battery quicker. Lots of folks spend money on "quick chargers" or a charger enhancer which will allow you to control the exact voltage that it will stop charging. There is also a way to open up the stock charger and locate a specific screw adjuster that will turn down the voltage slightly. A little company called "Pidzoom" makes charger enhancers and quick chargers. Sorry for the novel there I just wanted to share what I know. Thanks for another awesome video!
Thanks, I love a good novel 😂 I'm going to continue charging/operating pursuant to Wired's instruction manual. If the full charge voltage continues to drop, then I'll probably pursue a warranty claim. 🏁 RUGER
I love my 2023 Blue Wired Freedom, but I must admit, that orange looks pretty cool too! I'd probably buy the Wired again, the E-Cells bike is just kinda ugly ;-)
just bought one and am watching as many videos on the bike (ive watched pretty much all of them before i purchased the bike) im so stoked to get mine. Im hearing nothing but goodthings other than some minor nitpicking stuff which i have been okay with. I keep hearing of E-cells and when looking at their website and bikes maybe im too dumb but seemed like it wasnt as cheap at the Wired freedom nd had a bunch of expensive upgrades that almost seemed mandatory. i think just the ease of getting the wired and having it pretty much maxed out with stuff is perfect for me. i know shipping sucks but thats kinda like a you win some lose some moment that i just dealt with. since i just ordered too im getting the dual battery pack with my bike which i am extremely happy for.
Late response Dude, However, may I humbly suggest a solution? (Regarding your front loose fender and headlight bolt issue address at 8:45 into the video). If you have not yet tried using a nylock-nut with a split-ring washer, instead of simply a standard nut on the long bolt, this should be helpful. The addition friction-grip from the nylock aided by the pressure from the split-ring washer should do the trick. If for some reason she does not stay as tight as you would like her then the only solution (prior to removal) would be to add a drop of Red LocTite into the mix and the baby will stay snug as a bug in a rug!! Ride Polite, Safe and Happy (RPSH) !!! kc
Nice update. I'm still waiting for mine... hopefully this month! One question I have is what are the electric motor / gearing noise levels at roughly 20mph or so? For me I decided on 60V primarily because I was unsure whether a hub motor's torque could handle going up some steep hills returning home while loaded with groceries. It was that or getting a mid-motor bike where a lower voltage wouldn't be a problem. That was my only real concern, I doubt I'll ever run the thing above 30mph or so anyway. I'll probably take off the fenders when I get it, but we'll see. One big reason I decided on the Wired was that the rear rack looks very sturdy... one of my requirements since I'll be hanging panniers and carrying maybe 50 pounds in them. I'll need to find a good charging solution. I have no need to charge the batteries to full, I figure 80% (63V) will be plenty. Even just 70% (61V). I suspect that the included chargers just charge them up to 100% every time but I don't know (can anyone tell me?).
Yes, if you leave the battery on the charger, they will go 100% every time. The rear rack is sturdy for sure. Gear noise at 20MPH is minor. Hope you enjoy that bike! RUGER
Question for ya... Why did you choose this over the ecells bike. I'm in the market of some electrical type of transportation (escooter or ebike).. But I am bombarded and still confused after hours of research. I read that the customer support for Wired freedom is horrible. I saw the response they sent to many people about the death wobble some people experience. Very pissed off to see their demeaning message to customers. I prefer a USA owned company. Anyhow, just wanted to ask you so I can find out why people would buy this bike over the ecells. Thank you for your transparent review
Same but opposite. I choose wired. I was in the same boat as you at first but after the latest new updated version of wired and keeping it the same price for all the upgrades I decided to go with wired this time around and from what I've seen their customer service seems pretty good. E cells has amazing customer service that can't be beat but I also don't like how the owner constantly goes on videos and harasses people that say anything negative about his bike.
I was interested in purchasing an Ecells e-bike and sent them an email with questions…. They never responded. Customer service has not impressed me so far…
@@DitchCCDC23 I can't compare 5 Star with Wired. I say take an objective look and make you best choice. Either way, you'd be far better than a Rad or Himiway! RUGER
Ruger, I've got cash in hand but am afraid to pull the trigger until I hear a little more about the frame. I saw a video of a guy who owned both the Ecells 5 star and the wired. He didn't have too much good to say about wired, but I'm taking a lot of what he said with a grain of salt. However, I did see the wired frame flexing upon certain conditions. Another video I saw showed the guy telling us about how wired is beefing up the piece that attaches the center shock to the frame. Have you heard of any updates on this subject?
I'm kinda skeptical about the lack of an integral chain guard on that chain ring. Not only cause of concern about chain jump but also I don't want chain grease on my pants.
Nice bike for sure. I like the latest Wired Cruiser in lime green as well. Shame they don't have them here in the UK. My derestricted Himiway Zebra will have to do me for now. Do you run tire liners? I find my tannus tire liners really make for a more comfortable ride with the fat tires running about 16 psi. Keep the video's coming 👍
Hey my UK friends 😎 I dig the lime green as well. You have some real tuff laws there in the UK when it comes to e-bikes and scooters. Draconian! No liners yet. When the tires need replaced, I plan on giving liners a serious consideration... RUGER
Solid honest review, thank you very much. I have the exact same as you, less the fenders. Question, have you noticed any noises coming from the rear hub motor as you go from one PAS level to another? I have a slight rubbing noise in level two and four but very pronounced in level three. Quite annoying. I've seen a few others mention this in other threads.
What I get on mine is a little 'whine' in L3 and L4. I'm not concerned as the nylon gears have metal bulk ends. The noise I hear is similar to an older manual transmission in a car. Thanks for watching and enjoy that ride. RUGER
Great review, I appreciate it. The only thing I like more about the Wired ovee the Ecells is then looks. Nicer logo, nicer colors, nicer angles in the fram. For some reason looks is a bigger deal then it should be for me but I know the Ecells is the better move bike wise. They have more experience with the frame and ebikes in general and seem to have made a more durable and slightly better quality product. I'm not into their berry blue color tho, I prefer Wireds metallic light blue and orange.
E cells frame is a disaster lol. The battery hits the standard air shock, the welds are a mess, the wire management is a mess. Looks like they slapped the stuff on an old obsolete frame. New Wired bikes are in a whole different class in terms of power, speed, and acceleration and battery capacity. Wired bikes also just look much better and well made.
I adjusted my headlight, so it rides just above the fender. Tighten things up. I haven't had a problem. Just passed 400 miles last evening. I love this bike.
Great objective review! Which bag did you mount on the rear rack, and how does it secure? I have a Trek 7S Allant+ class 3 with Bosch speed motor, and it is finely crafted like a Porsche. However, having a throttle and ability to go over 30mph with great range has me intrigued. I am 295lbs and may get one of the new updated 2024 Freedom models. Almost every video ive watched on the Wired Freedom, there are complaints about issues they are having with it. At this point it just seems to me that the E-Cells 5 Star is just a better made bike. I do love the new dual battery setup and 45A controller they are using on the 2024 models and the step thru frame of their Cruiser though so its making my decision tough.
I hope you get your battery issues sorted out. That much degradation after only 500 miles is a huge deal breaker for me. Even your scooter's similar issue after only 1600 miles would concern me. I have 3, Bosch mid-drive e-bikes with thousands of miles on all of them and my batteries still charge up to 100% every time and my range hasn't been affected much either. I had intended to get a 60V, 40mph bike soon but now I want to see if this is a common problem.
@@RugersLastResortTry leaving your battery plugged in to the charger for several hours after the green light comes on to allow the cells to balance properly if you are going for maximum charge. Maximum Charge is really pretty stupid and will quickly destroy your battery and your company😂😂😂
I have a Wired Freedom (February 2024 model). Put 500 miles on it. VERY satisfied, until, electrical issues arose. Wired has been VERY helpful with troubleshooting but it's still not yet resolved for me. I hope we can get it back to working as it did at first. Regarding your concern about battery degradation: I'd suggest that you check the battery itself with a multimeter to see if it may be fully charged even though the display is indicating a lower voltage than the real voltage at the battery. (That seems to be at least one of my issues.)
@@RugersLastResort Thanks, it will be very interesting to see if your battery voltage matches the reading on your display. Mine has not been matching and Wired is helping me find a solution. It seems that once the reading goes down, the performance goes down even if the battery is still well charged. I very much hope I can get the problem sorted out on mine and perhaps you too can find a solution to the apparent battery degradation that you've noticed! Best wishes, it's a great bike when working properly!

@@RugersLastResort - Thanks, probably going to lean more towards Ecells bike. Guess engineering hadn't heard about center of gravity when thinking up this battery mount design?
48 volt e-bikes are fine. Not everybody wants to go a gazillion miles an hour or a gazillion miles on one battery. I guess to each his own. Just my opinion.
you need to look at the welds on the e-cell bikes...gross...poor welds...compare to wired. I wish Wired would allow options. At the least, the tire choice, on or off-road.
All lithium batteries will degrade with use. Tesla tells you to charge only to 80% for daily use and rarely or never charge to 100%. If you routinely charge to 100%, you will prematurely age your battery. The dual Battery setup of the new Wired Bikes gives you more power from less voltage sag and so much range that it is easy to stay in the 80% to 20% Goldilocks zone for maximum battery life. I never charge my bike above 65 volts, my battery will last longer than I will.
I know I should be more concerned about function and reliability than form, but visually, this bike is doing nothing for me. I wish my Himiway performed like this, but it's not worth riding an ugly bike to change. To each their own, I've seen way worse out there. To be fair, there is really nothing "wrong" with it, more boring than ugly.
Yeah in what way? Wired bikes now have 1000 more watts and a much better frame and much safer thru axle fork. The old e cells frame has no clearance for the shock and has to be redesigned besides being ugly with poor welds and horrible cable management. Wired is $250 less after shipping and will soon be certified to full UL standards, not just the battery like e cells is supposedly seeking.
@@jfly2249 how does that little controller put out so much power? What’s the longevity of it? No one knows. I wish wired would offer a longer warranty or the ability to purchase an extended.

Yeah, competition definitely benefits the consumer. Come on 72 volts!!! RUGER
Good to know. I'll probably adjust it myself after about 1000 miles. As long as I don't hardcore off-road, it's a minor annoyance. RUGER
walking trail that is used by 95% walkers, occasionally with strollers. If you want to fly... stay on the roads. Those guys will get us banned on trails!
Yah, this guy was doing 40 on a walking trail
@polok890 Remember, all it takes is one ebike running into a baby carriage at 25 mph on a trailer to get us all banned.
What’s better on the e cells? Nothing. E cells doesn’t even offer a thru axle fork😀
@@jfly2249 And it costs 700 more.

At about 1500 miles . I've had the controller mounts fail and the charger fan would make a terrible sound .I let wired know and they replaced both items immediately.
Good to know, thanks for your experience! Any one else have issues? RUGER
Your battery is getting out of balance. You need a charger that will continue to output power after the pack is "charged". The BMS should start to balance the pack, but it will take awhile.

I am also at 500 miles since the beginning of March and I really love my wired freedom!
Fun bike for sure! RUGER
Yup two 60 volt batteries and a 45 on the controller instead of a 40
From what I understand the stock chargers that get sent out with many PEV's aren't exactly perfect.
🏁 RUGER

just bought one and am watching as many videos on the bike (ive watched pretty much all of them before i purchased the bike) im so stoked to get mine.
I like the updated battery packs on the new Wired. Hope they use better cells than what came with my 2024! Enjoy that bike 👍 RUGER
Ride Polite, Safe and Happy (RPSH) !!! kc
Thanks for the ideas. 👍👍 I actually later removed the fender and light entirely. RUGER
That Sunset metallic orange is a beautiful color. I use to have a 02 Firebird that color. I still miss that car lol
I dig those Firebirds. Understand why you miss it! RUGER
Simple in my case - this was the quickest bike I could find for the dollar. The Ecells version was not on the market. Thanks for watching. RUGER
After as much research as possible between this bike and the E-CELLS 5 STAR, I've decided on the E-CELLS. It comes down to customer service.
Not only customer service, but the E Cells bikes are built far better.
@willybrown55 Not surprised and am happy to hear that.
@@willybrown55 How exactly "far better"? Honestly just curious. I don't know much about the e cell bike.

Wow really? That's interesting that you say that about Rad. My wife has one but it's at least 5 years old. Thanks for replying and be safe.
Thank you for this video. I'm also the guy who would never buy a 48v ebike. I tried one out and it just didn't do it for me.
Thanks for watching. 48v fills me with boredom! RUGER
If it doesn't already have it put a lockwasher on it and the fender shouldn't rattle loose.

Looks certainly play a role in our purchases and ownership. Drop a V8 in a Prius and I'd still refuse to buy one 🤣 RUGER
The wires freedom bike has serious design flaw in the rear suspension linkage and in the swing arm. The frame flexes as it is made of rubber.

I hope you get your battery issues sorted out. That much degradation after only 500 miles is a huge deal breaker for me. Even your scooter's similar issue after only 1600 miles would concern me. Wired has been VERY helpful with troubleshooting but it's still not yet resolved for me. I hope we can get it back to working as it did at first. When I checked the Ecells website, I found the options were quite impressive. RUGER
Have you had any flats?
Not as of this date. RUGER
@@RugersLastResort And no use of flat out, or any other slime???????

Especially those shovelheads! RUGER
I think all ebikes are on the homely side. RUGER
two zip ties> front fender fixed
I like that! RUGER
Absurd.

Actually there are 3 sides, Mine, Yours and the Truth 😉
Probably have a couple bad cells.
That is my suspicion as well........ RUGER
The new ecells dual star smokes wired freedom
Give us the details 👍 RUGER
Yeah in what way? Wired bikes now have 1000 more watts and a much better frame and much safer thru axle fork. The old e cells frame has no clearance for the shock and has to be redesigned besides being ugly with poor welds and horrible cable management. Wired is $250 less after shipping and will soon be certified to full UL standards, not just the battery like e cells is supposedly seeking.
@@jfly2249 how does that little controller put out so much power? What’s the longevity of it? No one knows. I wish wired would offer a longer warranty or the ability to purchase an extended.
@@jfly2249You're delusional if you think the Wired frame is better. In fact, it has serious design flaws that should have never made it to production. The frame is really chincy and weak. But most every wired freedom e-bike owner does not know that. The word is getting out though.

@RugersLastResort @christopher564 Well I finally got the WF today. Assembled it..charged the batteries..put Flat Out in the tires..Unlocked it..shined it up and went for a short cruise. Holy crap this thing is fast. I only weigh 150 lbs wet. The front end came up a bit on the first throttle from a dead stop. LOL. To answer your question Chris, yep I'm lovin' it. Plan on doing a cruise to the lake tomorrow. The poor UPS guy pulled it up 12 steps to my front door. He could have just left it at the garage LOL (box weighed 120lbs).
Enjoy that ride! RUGER
@@RugersLastResort I did a 45 mile cruise today. Had a great time. This thing is fun as hell! 😊
