Disturbed version is different... although the words are the same it’s a different experience... the message is different. Heavy. Simon and Garfunkel’s songs message was perfect for the 60’s, Disturbed’s versions timing is perfect for this disturbed world.

This included challenging the government's explanations for it's actions and not blindly accepting them as truth. This was seen in the protests and civil unrest over America's involvement in the Vietnam War. Set to a folk song tune, the words seem to be reminding everyone of the dangers of remaining silent on government policy; that a lot can be lost if we simply let it happen and don't stand up and protest. Fast forward 50 years and Disturbed's version of the same message is delivered in a much more angry fashion. Sort of "you didn't listen 50 years ago, now look where we are." It's a reminder of the age-old message that the only thing evil needs to triumph over good is silence by those watching. American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox put it best when she wrote: "To sin by silence, when we should protest, Makes cowards out of men." My two cents, any way. Keep up the great work Sushi!
jhowe67 I watched a interview with Paul Simon. He did write the song as a kind of protest but it was not against any Government or anything like that nor was it a prophecy. He wrote is because no record company would even give his songs a chance. The record companies said the “songs” were unsuitable for that time and age. But the song is one of the very rare ones where it did suit things in the 60’s and suits things now and will probably suit things 50 years from now. Love both versions lol

That's what I want when I watch a "REACTION" video. That's one of the things I like about Sushi, her reactions. I love it when someone experiences something that we experienced 60 years ago. There were so mush going on back then there wasn’t enough hours in a day to listen to all the music and so many different types, it was great.
This song was always dear to me and could conjure a tear every time... when he re did it... I generally dont like remakes and dont listen but... I mean... I still get goosebumps every time I listen to this. And I liked Disturbed before it. Never saw this coming. What a gift to us all.

Geoff Tate from Queensryche has an amazing voice too or at least did back in the day. Operation Mindcrime (the album) really shows it off. Till Lindeman from Rammstein, Maynard Keenan from Tool, and many more all prove that "Metalheads" certainly can sing (though I guess Tool might be classified as Prog Rock).

I cried the first time I heard this song and I am not an emotional person (take my word for it) its an amazing roller coaster ride of pure emotions that were brought from deep inside me I felt totally vulnerable. The music, voice, and song all come together and made it into a brilliant masterpiece of perfection.
I have been a fan of Disturbed for over 10 years now. They have amazing music. He is actually a Classically trained singer. That is why he has so much range and depth to his voice.
If you look up the live version Disturbed did, you'll see it's almost identical to the studio version. David simply blew this song into a new dimension.
The song's lyrics are haunting. How I've always interpreted it as the death of the soul with the loss of connection with each other. The original version was a warning against the rise of technology (Television / now 'social media') - causing less and less 'human' interaction (think about how people brag they have 6,000 'friends' on Facebook, or how people will 'text' someone whom is literately sitting next to them, rather than just 'talk' to them). Disturbed's version is equated to the 'rage' of someone because those warnings were not listened to - and how its becoming so 'uncomfortable' to even just 'talk' to someone without worrying about offending or being offended, because it feels easier to just 'use social media' instead of our own voices. The short version is its a warning about humanity losing what makes us 'human' - and instead embracing the 'neon god' (tech) which lets us 'communicate' but also leaves us in silence - and in turn is making us forget HOW to communicate with each other.
This was more a warning against people staying silent, just accepting what they are given, not standing up for what is right, accepting being lied to by politicians, not so much technology being the problem.
This was one of the first songs I remember hearing. It came out when I was a kindergartner, and my parents had the album and played the grooves off of it. I remember as a little kid thinking that the first line was, "Out of the darkness smiled a friend."

I was incredibly nervous the first time I heard this; Disturbed has a tendency to be known for a wilder sound and a fair bit of screaming. And I love how he just built up to the rage in this one and paced himself.

Im asking my 54 year old self the same thing. It blows my mind. I'm thinking its because they play video games and dont listen to real music. Most of the stuff they listen to these days just sux and is all computerized, sampling, things like that. Its the only answer I have.
I am 28 first time I heard sound of silence was when I was 13 or 14. You have to remember that most of the songs we will listen to as young people are the ones on the radio and this type of music hardly ever gets into the pop culture stuff that most young people listen to. Its sad but its hard to find diamonds when there are so many out there.
Notice the arch of musicians crossing the river to the people on shore holding sheet music. They need each other to end the silence. Music is the universal language.

Then i finally find a credible source site that had the interview with a close friend and he explained what he was told but felt there was more but he didnt push the issue. @@tompurcell1499 lol no ive been to his concerts..he actually explained how he learned it, it took alot of practice but he can hit multiple notes at the same time that makes it sound like autotune or editing multiple layers just in different pitches on top of each other and hes been accused but more credible people know the truth..its not impossible to hit 2 or more notes with your voice at once..old mongolian throat singers could hit multiple pitches and notes along with that raspy vibration to give it a unique touch all at once..Hes just very talented, ive been to his concerts and he sings live right there, he doesnt sing along to song playing out the speakers, he will finish the concert, yelling the entire time and his voice is fine afterwards

He in my opinion has the best voice in Rock. Clear and powerful. He had classical training in his younger days and it shows

I heard that Paul Simon himself, was so humbled and impressed by Disturb’s version, that he literally told them that it’s THEIR song now!
This song was always dear to me and could conjure a tear every time... when he re did it... I generally dont like remakes and dont listen but... I mean... I still get goosebumps every time I listen to this. And I liked Disturbed before it. Never saw this coming. What a gift to us all.
This version of Sound of Silence brings tears in my eyes every time I hear it. The way David’s voice builds up to the finale. Gosh! Words can’t explain it. You just have to let it in and it takes over your mind and soul! Man! He has some amazing pipes! That voice and those piecing eyes

He did not know they were going to auto tune him. Oh, and he was so sick they had to have him sitting because he couldn’t stand for long, and still gave a great performance. But yeah, he was auto tuned🙄

I cried the first time I heard this song and I am not an emotional person (take my word for it) its an amazing roller coaster ride of pure emotions that were brought from deep inside me I felt totally vulnerable. No matter how many times I hear this I still get the chills.
The original version was a warning against the rise of technology (Television / now 'social media') - causing less and less 'human' interaction (think about how people brag they have 6,000 'friends' on Facebook, or how people will 'text' someone whom is literately sitting next to them, rather than just 'talk' to them). Disturbed's version is equated to the 'rage' of someone because those warnings were not listened to - and how its becoming so 'uncomfortable' to even just 'talk' to someone without worrying about offending or being offended, because it feels easier to just 'use social media' instead of our own voices. The short version is its a warning about humanity losing what makes us 'human' - and instead embracing the 'neon god' (tech) which lets us 'communicate' but also leaves us in silence - and in turn is making us forget HOW to communicate with each other.
This was more a warning against people staying silent, just accepting what they are given, not standing up for what is right, accepting being lied to by politicians, not so much technology being the problem.

I am 28 first time I heard sound of silence was when I was 13 or 14. You have to remember that most of the songs we will listen to as young people are the ones on the radio and this type of music hardly ever gets into the pop culture stuff that most young people listen to. Its sad but its hard to find diamonds when there are so many out there.

The singer of disturbed has had his voice studied by singing coaches and that most could not pull of his tone with that much strength repeatedly without damaging their vocal chords..theres a trick he learned to make those almost soothing raspy vibrations that make singers lose their voice, not effect him at all his voice is better from when he first became mainstream which was about 15 years ago..his voice has not deteriorated at alll, it only gets better but if even a pro singer attempted his style, they would develope permanent damage over time. not my words, lots of high profile singing coaches that major artists hire say the same thing..the original singer says "hello darkness my old friend, because when he practiced in the dark he was more comfortable and able to concentrate om his voice..then he starts talking sbout a vision in his dream that wont leave his mind..its about how people are becoming shallow and dependent on technology and expensive material possessions that mean nothing untill someone sees them on a advertisement or billboard..the original song is old and all the lights used to draw attention to a product were neon.."people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made" hes describing being materialistic.."people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening" hes saying people are not spreading a meaningful message and that the content of music is becoming dumbed down because peoples lyrics are loosing depth and becoming trash because everyone just wants to listen to a good hook and beat but dont absorb the lyrics so artists dont need to put effort into lyrics and the songs never shared are the ones that are musical works of art but they go unnoticed because people are are becoming more and more shallow and dumbed down. he saw a patttern in our behavior that worried him about the future of humanity..his prophecy came true..all people care about is what designer brand is trending or look at how mumble rap lacks complexity, meaning, the only message is drugs, money, thots and jewelry..its the epitome of shallow

@@tompurcell1499 He used alot of metaphors, I tried to interpret it..i thought it was about people being distracted with TV and not communicating with loved ones or maybe religion and how youd have to remain silent about blasphemous thoughts or ideas because of the god line and "no one dared disturbedf the sound of silence", out of fear of being shunned..but i researched it and found multiple theories but nothing from the source or close to it and found out the original writer spread misinformation about the meaning of the song. Then i finally find a credible source site that had the interview with a close friend and he explained what he was told but felt there was more but he didnt push the issue. Theres celebrity voice coaches on youtube who will analyze singers ppl request to see if they are legit, the 3 i watched were blown away and didnt believe the singer of disturbed could actually be doing that without just dismantling his career time with his voice but his voice has remained strong..He covered this song flawlessly and i loved it b4 it was remade but the soft almost haunting sound of the song didnt demand the full capability of his talent..youre welcome..it took me a while to find the right source so i just wanted people to realize how accurate and significant this song is..True work of art

Some songs can convey different interpretations, I suppose. As it happens, as a result of your comment, I went onto a voice coach's channel and she first thought that David Draiman was using auto-tune (which I never heard of before). However, I think she ended up accepting his voice as the real thing.

@@tompurcell1499 lol no ive been to his concerts..he actually explained how he learned it, it took alot of practice but he can hit multiple notes at the same time that makes it sound like autotune or editing multiple layers just in different pitches on top of each other and hes been accused but more credible people know the truth..its not impossible to hit 2 or more notes with your voice at once..old mongolian throat singers could hit multiple pitches and notes along with that raspy vibration to give it a unique touch all at once..Hes just very talented, ive been to his concerts and he sings live right there, he doesnt sing along to song playing out the speakers, he will finish the concert, yelling the entire time and his voice is fine afterwards
