    This song was written in 1965 by Paul Simon. It was then a folk song meant to be a warning about the lack of communication between people in the modern society. The version of Disturbed is the anger created because we didn't listen.

    • @terraphon
      @terraphon ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is entirely incorrect.
      Trent Reznor commented, when he heard the remake of "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, "I wasn't prepared for what I saw, and it really wasn't my song anymore".
      What Paul Simon ACTUALLY said was "In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on Conan this week. The S&G cover..." He also emailed David Draiman and said "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice, Thanks.”
      These comments get conflated all the time, with people posting this inaccurate information over and over and over. I would love it if people would do some cursory fact checking.

    • @ivyfalls1
      @ivyfalls1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul Simon never said that. He did send a note to Draiman telling him how much he enjoyed his version.

      Whether Simon actually that or not, it totally is. I can’t even listen to Simon & Garfunkel’s version anymore. Their upbeat tempo royally irks my nerves. Pentatonix does a great cover of Disturbed’s version of the song, but for me… From now on, Disturbed singing Sound of Silence will always be ACE!!!

David Draiman did a remarkable job. Paul Simon was so impressed he told David it's his, now. What a compliment from the original!

    Disturbed usually does much heavier songs, but David has such a beautiful voice they can't help but do these beautiful ones now and then. I highly suggest The Light and Hold on to Memories for more of his beautiful voice. David Draiman was trained as a Jewish Cantor, which taught him much of the skills he possesses in his vocal ability. Absolutely one of the best voices in music over the past three decades!

    David comes from an orthodox Jewish background and trained as a Hazzan, or Cantor, who leads a congregation in songful prayer. He's had his demons. Battled, and won, against heroin use. When he was aged 16 his then girlfriend who introduced him to heroin killed herself. He himself very nearly died aged 18 due to the heroin use, and that experience helped him to get off of the drug. He went cold turkey and kicked it. With that in mind Disturbed's music is heavily influenced by these experiences. The girlfriend's suicide influenced their song "Inside the Fire". The video to which is very disturbing. Expect some hard hitting lyrics and visuals when you listen to their original work. Which is also very heavy.
    They did this song as they often do a cover when they release an album. They've done a very good cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion". But as you've seen, one of their most popular songs is "Down With the Sickness". Be careful, the full version is not for the faint hearted.

Of course, Dave and his group modified the arrangement and did a masterful job, as I believe this was the way this song was Meant to be played. Makes you sit up and listen. Sad thing is, it could have been written today with everything still going on in the world.

    Well, my deleted comment went sorta like this: When I first heard this cover of Sound Of Silence, I said "Now THIS is how this song should have been sung in the first place. Simon & Garfunkel's version was just too "happy" sounding for the subject matter." I was blown away by how much more emotional this version of the song is compared to the original. Another song where the cover version is way better than the original is Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails song Hurt. This is a MUST hear...can I get a "Hell yeah!" from the rest of subscribers if they think so too? Here is a link to that song: th-cam.com/video/8AHCfZTRGiI/w-d-xo.html. Cheers!

    David Draiman's got a once in a generation voice and the training to use it properly. I've always likened his voice to a Lamborghini V12 engine (I'm a bit of a car nut... :P). Smooth and throaty at low revs, it rises to a powerful growl when you hit the throttle, and when you really step on it it roars like some mythical creature from the dawn of time. He's just so powerful and controlled, it's amazing to listen to and you should definitely check out some more, but be fair warned: Sound of Silence is an outlier in their repertoire. It is about as far from their normal sound as you can get and still be the same band, but the rest of their stuff is excellent as well, just a lot more hard core. They do make a point of including a cover song of something thematically important to the concept of each album, and this one was written in the mid 60s by the phenomenal Simon and Garfunkel, but they really put their own unique stamp on it and made it their own.
    One of the things you will find if you explore Disturbed, is they do NOT shy away from difficult topics or dark subject matter. They actually focus a lot on mental health and dealing with trauma or abuse, but more in a mindset of surviving and recovering from these things, and even when they visit really dark topics, they touch on it in a generally positive manner that manages to be uplifting and inspiring. One of my personal favorites is The Light. Great song about dealing with dark times in your life.

      Not all of their music is hard. Hold on to the Memories, The light, Reason to fight and several others arent remotely hard.

      @@dalehammers4425 oh, agreed. Just pointing out that their bread & butter is hard rock/nu metal. Some of their best songs are on the lighter side, but my favorites tend to be more hard-driving. :)

    I have heard many versions of this song including recently on your channel Henk's version. I have to say Disturb's version is the best, hands down. It's haunting and beautiful. He sings it with such a passion that you feel down to your core. Fantastic version. I enjoy how mind opening all of these bands are to you in your reactions. I felt much the same when I first discovered these different bands. It's amazing how much tremendous talent is out there. And some of it we don't get to experience here in the states for the most part like the European symphonic metal bands. Bring on some " Beyond the Black".

      Paul Simon himself agrees with you, after he saw the live version on Conan he literally gave this song to Davis saying it was now his.

    I would highly recommend watching the live version of this from Conan O'Brien's show. It hits a bit different than the video. Most of Disturbed's stuff is pretty heavy metal. One less metal song, which is also very emotional, is "Hold on to Memories". "The Light" is another one that's slightly less metal, and again very poignant. Definitely worth watching the videos for.

    David Draiman is the singer and he is classically trained as you might guess. When the songwriter Paul Simon saw Disturbed's performance of this on Conan (highly recommend), Paul then put a link to the video on his webpage - that's how much Simon loved it (despite it sounding completely different than the original).

    They did a more recent cover, 'If I Ever Loose My Faith In You' that is worth checking out. I don't know if 'Down With The Sickness' (the tune they are famous for) would be your jam. While it's done very well, it's about some heavy stuff. If you do that one, stick to the official music video as it's based on the radio edit and has one intense part cut out.

    David doesn't usually sing this type of music. He's metal. Please consider this song - Beth & Joe - I'd Rather Go Blind- Live in Amsterdam. It's a cover of an Etta James song. I really believe you'll enjoy it. You're doing great Debbie! Keep up the great work. Thanks -Vickie

    When Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song it was a warning. A warning to what was coming with technology and the pace of the world. Disturbed's version is a we told you so.
    Paul Simon heard Disturbed play this song on Conan and commented it was no longer Simon and Garfunkel's. He said this it was now David Draimen and Disturbed's song.
    David is classically trained as a Cantor and he's very talented. Welcome to Disturbed and the Sickness.

    An amazing Cover of this song. The other viewers have already said it, both actually. You need to see the Live Version on the Conan show and then see the video of "Down with the Sickness". That is DISTURB's normal. Hence them being a Heavy Metal band. But know that Heavy Metal can not and does not restrict them to only Heavy Metal. They're to AWESOME for that. Great Post
