A proper sequel to this game is begging to come out on PS4. Modnation Racers was only held back by the PS3's limitations. (ie loading and frame rates) I loved this game.
This review was wrong when you can't change the feel of the karts. You can change the feel of the karts in the hub for more drift than regular handling and more acceleration than top speed and vise-versa.
This is the greatest racing game we ever got in the history of gaming. It never got better than this for me. Games like this and LittleBigPlanet truly felt free; freedom is something we don’t get alot in games nowadays.
I am so getting this game. I got a PS3 today and this game is next on my list of games I'm getting, like Sonic Generations, LEGO MARVEL Superheroes, and Injustice: Gods Among Us
Great review. But honestly I personally would love one or two mushrooms in a PS3 racing game. That's what I was looking for; a racing game as close to Mario Kart as possible for the PS3. ModNations matched that description, but its weapons can never replace my love for red shells. :)
@garrywarne1 1. FULL 3D in MK64 2. More party gameplay, its a bit less serious 3. Interactive maps 4. The coins that allowed you to go faster are gone, something which defined alot SMK 5. Obviously, better graphics
look at the jump he hits at 1:25 tell me you dont think that looks horrible. he stops arching in mid air. it looks animated. its not satisfying at all. better physics would make the game more enjoyable in my opinion.
Pretty much everything Derek said about MNR I agree on. The racing is nearly as good as MKWii, but I prefer double dash and DS better anyway. Also I prefer the creation in MNR over LBP.
Everybody that says the load times are long are crazy! The longest I've waited on ModNation is 30 seconds and the longest I've waited on Black Ops is 5 minutes.
@garrywarne1 the change from Pseudo 3D to full 3D highly affected gameplay, and it made CTR exist how it did, it DID change gameplay, and for obvious reasons, now you go up, you go down, and your jumps are actually jumps Its called inovation, thats what it did
Actually the story is there so you can unlock stuff and if you didn't want to then buy the unlock key for 2.99. It's also not just a bunch of random races thrown in it has an actual story. Oh and the load times aren't that long I mean my god someone complained now everyone says that I mean come on!
@cyberworrier94 Don't get the vita version because it has no online multiplayer and online is the main attraction to modnation. Also you can get the ps3 version for around 18 dollars now on amazon.
@WeShallC There actually are a couple of Mario Kart killers out. Blur, Split-Second, and this game. They just haven't exactly "killed" Mario Kart yet since they sold so poorly.
@NeverendingTwilight1 I can' disagree with you or agree. ModNation seems like a different game entirely, and Mario Kart has grown worse over the year. I can understand one blue shell, but a bullet bill, mega mushroom, and countless other items seem a bit unfair. Also we will probably never see the same customization in Mario Kart like greating your own character or map, because then the maps will lack the heart of the premade and the characters not being Mario characters just doesn't seem right
@MrTURBOJOHN MK64 is widely regarded as being hugely derivative of its predecessor Super Mario Kart for the SNES, and it offered nothing new to the table. But CTR innovated air time boosts and power sliding boosts, while DKR showed how a game can have an ambitious single player mode (Adventure), meanwhile the slippery controls and lack of anything new leave MK64 to be a lackluster experience.
@MrTURBOJOHN 1. This is a technical thing, not one of gameplay and is really just an update of hardware, not of software. 2. Yes, this is one thing that MK64 did differently in race mode, but this decision is controversial, and leaves MK64 to be a frustrating nightmare in single player mode. 3. ? 4. The removal of coins was widely criticised, which is why DKR and CTR both featured their own equivelants. 5. Again, this is a technical accomplishment, not an actual innovation.
@kR0B45 I did play CTR, and all I can say is that instead of that MK64 has way more inovations than that shit, and more inovations than diddy kong racing, both did rip off because the genre was created, evoluted and mastered by nintendo, they just made a few differences to make it different
@MrSkotty1992 No, CTR is widely regarded as being a better game than MK64. It had improved AI, better track design, better graphics, more depth, more ambition, better control and featured some important innovations in the field of Kart Racing: Air Time and Sliding boosts. The debate of MNR vs MKWii will go on forever, but no rational person can argue in favour of MK64 (rather than CTR) without resorting to nostalgic arguments.
@lylatfox4 Thats not what i heard, all he said was that CTR is the biggest rip-off in game history. If all he said was that he personally preferred MK64 to the other kart-racers, than i wouldntve even said anything.
@MrTURBOJOHN Yes, it did affect gameplay, but that was only because of technical reasons. Three dimensional graphics were not revolutionary, it was an obvious technical achievement that had been ripped from games like SM64 and Star Fox. Innovation has to be unique and original, but MK64 just took other ideas that very much qualified as being 'No Shit Sherlock"s.
Your review is flawed. While you were right about most things about the game, you are wrong about the customization of the car since you can't specify if you prefer steering or drifting, and if you prefer acceleration or speed. And my biggest complaint is about how you completely disregarded the fact that this game tests your mastery of skill over just racing. If anything Mario is more cheap since you have no defense to a blue shell or any other unstoppable forces. By building your meter, you can use it as speed or as a shield. And while the shield doesn't always guarantee protection from everything if your meter isn't big enough. It will reward you for constantly building your meter to have it at your disposal.
@garrywarne1 Are you kidding me? MK 64 has nothing to do with SMK, and that is the difference that allowed CTR to even be comparable to it. Slippery controlls? At the time, you wouldn't even notice that, and its supposed to be like that, Its much a better then CTR which is just a rip off
@MrTURBOJOHN So what? Are you saying the only kart racers that can be good are Mario kart because they invented the genre? That is a sad reason to think so. MK64 has less tracks, less characters, less variation in gameplay and less gameplay modes than both DKR and CTR. Most notably, MK64 has no story mode, and if you think that everything that isnt mario kart is just "ripping off" than you are nothing more than an ignorant fanboy, no offence.
@MrTURBOJOHN Wow so many people do this shit "if it wasnt for (insert nintendo game here) nothing else would even exist". Get over it, sure it may have been "revolutionary" to some, but being more revolutionary doesnt exactly make it better. For example, SM64 is easily more revolutionary than Banjo Kazooie, but Banjo Kazooie is still a better game. The so-called "campain mode" you speak of is basically just doing an arcade race, not even comparable to the story mode in great kart racers.
@kR0B45 If it wasn't Mario kart 64, there would never be any Diddy kong racing nor crash team racing, yes it has less courses, but they are way better than diddy kong and ctr, and yes, i did play them all of these games, it has a "campaign" mode, with 4 cups, and thats like having a story, what could it have, like mario wan'ts to save peach from bowsers and he has to race? because that story is boring, and way too silly in a racing game thats what happens in DKR boring story
@MrTURBOJOHN Really? You obviously dont have or barely (if at all) played CTR if you thinjk it is a "silly rip off". Even Diddy Kong Racing is far superior to MK64, which is quite sad, as you would expect the franchise to more or less create the genre to be best at it. How did CTR and DKR rip off MK64? Please elaborate on that because they are far superior to the game you claim has "changed kart racing forever".
I think the game is good but I honestly don't think it even comes close to Mario Kart. The closest anyone got was Crash Team Racing and Diddy Kong Racing, and so far there has only been one game that may actually be better and that is Sonic All-Stars Transformed, and when compared to those games, this game and LBPK….are kinda weak, at least as cart racers, as creative mediums, they're pretty cool.
If you think this is good, try Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed. Like I said, it is the only Kart racer that everyone agrees might be better than mario kart.
Sonic & A-SRT is good but isn't better than Mario Kart either in my opinion. When you realise how uninspired and limited the weapons are in this game, you'll understand. Other than that... Definitely a brilliant and enjoyable game.
Lol am I the only one who actually thinks that mario kart is unfair and that it is not about skill. Best kart games I have played are this and crash team racing. Crash team racing was so freaking much better than any mario kart have ever been because tracks and controls were so much better and you can win races with pure skill. Also the drifting boost mechanic was excellent in CTR. This game is just awesome to me and beats mario kart all day every day. Mario kart is soo overrated...
@kR0B45 No it is not, CTR is just a silly rip off, a really silly rip off, indeed MK64 changed kart racing forever, and thats not kidding, thats true, this game, modnation racers, is the only kart racing that doesn't completely rip off, and brings new stuff, like the track editor, car editor, and more stuff MK64 could be inferior, but the others riped the shit out of it with everything they could AND it is still just way more fun to play than CTR
@kR0B45 these story modes, are silly and only complicate the basicism of doing a fuckihng campaign, who the fuck cares about story in a kart game, people want to drive, and yes, and I actually prefer M64 than BK, I donno why, but I get bored of that shit, its not as straight forward as SM64, thats what happens with MK64 its straight forward, and doesn't annoy that much, and it has a better MP game
A proper sequel to this game is begging to come out on PS4.
Modnation Racers was only held back by the PS3's limitations. (ie loading and frame rates)
I loved this game.
+Mickael Mc hmm 40minutes ago since last time

Great review as always, Derek!
I really hope they make a new one for the PS4!
Some reviewers say that the track editor in this game is quite difficult to understand.
didnt that old lego game stunt racers have a decent track editor?
I was in the private beta for this amazing game!! I love it!
@garrywarne1 What`s DKR? I`m mistaking that for Donkey Kong Racing, but that game was cancelled.
CGR Undertow - MODNATION RACERS for PS3 Video Game Review
@MrTURBOJOHN If you think that SMK has little to no similarities with MK64, then may I ask that you state the differences?
Did they fix the loading times?
I am so getting this game. I got a PS3 today and this game is next on my list of games I'm getting, like Sonic Generations, LEGO MARVEL Superheroes, and Injustice: Gods Among Us
It's seriously the best kart racer I've ever played and I have played ALL of them :)
Great review. But honestly I personally would love one or two mushrooms in a PS3 racing game.
That's what I was looking for; a racing game as close to Mario Kart as possible for the PS3. ModNations matched that description, but its weapons can never replace my love for red shells. :)
Derek has the power of HEAVY METAL!!!
Should have said this on the Rockband 3 review...
This is the 2ND best kart racer ever! (best is CTR)
Holy crap I love this game!
What if I want to get this game, but with one single mushroom in it?
:
I LOVE THIS FUCKING GAME IT IS WAY BETTER THAN MARIO CART!
OMG I haven't played this game since 4 yrs ago I WAS 9 and I'm 14 MY CHILDHOOD :D
@fossil98
what? this play has been out for months and yes everyone has said the load times are horrendous
@garrywarne1 1. FULL 3D in MK64
2. More party gameplay, its a bit less serious
3. Interactive maps
4. The coins that allowed you to go faster are gone, something which defined alot SMK
5. Obviously, better graphics
@dacasman
that's like saying street fighter should have physics applied to it
@shaurz its just to add a little bit of comedy to the game, tbf i think it pulls it off quite well cuz it made me chuckle a few times :)
Can anyone tell me if the story is same on PS3 and PSP versions?
Make sure to read a book during loading times . Just to not waste your life
I love this game! and until Nintendo comes out with Mario Kart: DOUBLE DASH 2!!!!, this game will always be my #1 Kart racing game
Does this version require an online pass?
look at the jump he hits at 1:25 tell me you dont think that looks horrible. he stops arching in mid air. it looks animated. its not satisfying at all. better physics would make the game more enjoyable in my opinion.
Pretty much everything Derek said about MNR I agree on. The racing is nearly as good as MKWii, but I prefer double dash and DS better anyway. Also I prefer the creation in MNR over LBP.
What should i pick ModNation or Sonic Transformed ?
Azte ka modnation
Everybody that says the load times are long are crazy! The longest I've waited on ModNation is 30 seconds and the longest I've waited on Black Ops is 5 minutes.
@garrywarne1 the change from Pseudo 3D to full 3D highly affected gameplay, and it made CTR exist how it did, it DID change gameplay, and for obvious reasons, now you go up, you go down, and your jumps are actually jumps

Game looks pretty polished, so to date there hasn't been a mario kart killer??
@Caleb1upman Diddy Kong Racing, yeah, I know...
this game is a work of art
@dacasman its a kart racer dude, not gran turismo
@cyberworrier94 Don't get the vita version because it has no online multiplayer and online is the main attraction to modnation. Also you can get the ps3 version for around 18 dollars now on amazon.
Great review man!
The track creator in MNR will be carried over into Gran Turismo 5, IIRC.
@WeShallC There actually are a couple of Mario Kart killers out. Blur, Split-Second, and this game. They just haven't exactly "killed" Mario Kart yet since they sold so poorly.
blur and this POS PS garbage are mario kart killers? LMAO people are so dumb on the internet tis impressive. must be another liberal.
id like to see a modnation shooter
@IBOUGHTYAMOM yes Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a good game, along with many others, they will always stay back behind MK and CTR !
@iomis2001 i think so aswell
Online does not work for me with this game =(
@shaurz cuz Mario Kart is full of famous and recognized characters.
@spierfan100 im not sating i dont like the game, i just wish it had better physics
@kR0B45
all he's saying is he preferred MK64 to the other games, it just didnt do it for him
@NeverendingTwilight1
I can' disagree with you or agree. ModNation seems like a different game entirely, and Mario Kart has grown worse over the year. @kR0B45 no, I comprehend it, its just way too bullshit when you could just go there and BAM, racing where you want
Its a bit unfair when the commentator says the AI are too good seing as he never boosts or shield..
@garrywarne1 Yah, but the original had Conker and Banjo and the DS ver. has Tiny and this other character that are lame. I agree.
6:12 "not a mushroom in sight"
But there is a mushroom seat :p
@IBOUGHTYAMOM why???
@MrTURBOJOHN
Super mario should have this idea on the next game.
@kR0B45 I did play CTR, and all I can say is that instead of that MK64 has way more inovations than that shit, and more inovations than diddy kong racing, both did rip off because the genre was created, evoluted and mastered by nintendo, they just made a few differences to make it different

Oh WOW! Derek reviewed a PS3 game! Oh wait, it's a mario cart type game. This really doesn't count as branching out into other genre's.
Cala a boca
rc pro am first popularized "kart games" not mario, let alone create the genre.
I like how the game cheats to keep it close, like NFL Blitz
@MrTURBOJOHN Yes, it did affect gameplay, but that was only because of technical reasons. Three dimensional graphics were not revolutionary, it was an obvious technical achievement that had been ripped from games like SM64 and Star Fox. Innovation has to be unique and original, but MK64 just took other ideas that very much qualified as being 'No Shit Sherlock"s.
I just play this game in PS3.
Is the game worth buying?
@@Helicopter7 yes I was going to buy the game disc
looks like mario cart mixed with crash tag team racing
Your review is flawed. While you were right about most things about the game, you are wrong about the customization of the car since you can't specify if you prefer steering or drifting, and if you prefer acceleration or speed.

Hey Mark, remember when you used to review games? Way better than your weird 80s comic bullshit.
minute long :O thats dreamcast territory right there
@dacasman
well if physics are your thing, this game just isnt for you
I'll get the Vita Version!
@FuckLables Hell yeah, CTR is the only Mario Kart competitor, to not say is better than it !
@ipodxdude relly
@garrywarne1 Oh, I have that game on my DS, but I heard that the original one on the N64 was alot better.
But if crash team racing is the best kart racing game then its better than itself? These logik make no cents...
@MrTURBOJOHN oh i see, you cant handle when a game isnt simple enough for you to comprehend, fair enough.
@SpartanG600 Multiplayer: GREAT
Population: OVER 9000000
No lie
@fossil98
*game*
@CGRundertow
if all the karts were different, everybody would use the exact same kart and it would ruin the creativity side of the game...
@garrywarne1 Are you kidding me? MK 64 has nothing to do with SMK, and that is the difference that allowed CTR to even be comparable to it.
Slippery controlls? At the time, you wouldn't even notice that, and its supposed to be like that, Its much a better then CTR which is just a rip off
@evillord77 Nevah
oh for anyone that plays the psp version of this game the online still works at the time of this comment but you have to buy a pass
MODNATION RACERS
diddy king racing on the n64?
that was better than mario kart 64, i dont get why they never made another apart from a crappy remake on the ds
@MrTURBOJOHN So what? Are you saying the only kart racers that can be good are Mario kart because they invented the genre? That is a sad reason to think so. know what would make cart racing better? FLAMETHROWERS! sorr just had to say it
@StinkyJoesRandom
Lol,
Blatant lie is blatant
(hint: it isn't out yet)
Modnation racers has $200 of premium content
@MrTURBOJOHN Wow so many people do this shit "if it wasnt for (insert nintendo game here) nothing else would even exist". Get over it, sure it may have been "revolutionary" to some, but being more revolutionary doesnt exactly make it better. MK64 could be inferior, but the others riped the shit out of it with everything they could
AND it is still just way more fun to play than CTR
Has this guy even played any non nintendo kart racers? He seems to forget that mario kart 64 was the most inferior kart racer of its generation
@dacasman Facepalm
Diddy Kong Racing is better then mario kart, im just sayin.
