I really miss the old PS3 store. I hated the change to what is now the PS3 and PS4 store. The PS3 version of this also had weird sound effects the PS4 didn't. The old bright blue and orange bubble tiles aesthetic and sound effects were brilliant. Real shame they changed it and never looked back.
The PS Vita store is still like that but it has a similar issue as Ryan described here that it seems empty and you have to actively look for your games.
The store where I used to get demos and download DLC. I would spend hours looking at what I can’t buy since I was just a kid. The memories. Thank you to the PS3!
There’s only at least 3 games (Or 4 if I end up buying Castlevania Harmony of Despair due to the DLCs it has, though can you also buy them on the PS4 version?) that I need to buy before the store closes for good, I wasted a lot of good money just to buy trash sonic games on there when I could’ve played some better games before most of them got delisted.
@@tselotiii every sonic game that I've wasted 18 years on when I was 4 years old, from classic, to dreamcast, to modern, are all trash, I was dumb enough to be convinced by scummy sonic youtubers like premy and ls mark to give those garbage games a shot, it was all a waste of my time and money, and the fanbase is a lost cause like indie shills. Also I literally had a mental breakdown at one point to myself 6 years ago when playing the chun-nan dlc cause of how terrible it was, which put a bad affect on my mental health at the time, I still blame the people that actually convinced me to think that the dlcs (And the game in general) were good, end of conversation about that garbage franchise.
@@calebproductions1264 Hey man, I don't agree with what you're saying. Sonic games might not be peak entertainment, or something you'd cry a multitude of tears of joy over, but they're certainly not trash; neither are they very difficult. Games aren't something you should put much stress over anyway. Appreciate the fun aspects of it. If a game, regardless if its sonic or not, is making you mad to the point it gives you a mental breakdown, then you should probably call it a day and turn the game off.
Be LOUD gamers. I still find myself going back to buy PS3 games online. This year I bought the Resident Evil Umbrella/Darkside Collection after playing around with the idea for basically a decade. I bought Metal Gear Revengeance during the 2020 quarantine. And generally speaking it’s the only way for me to guarantee playing a new PS3 game. Because not every country is a first world and the second hand market can be INSANE! And even the last PS3 version has a “faulty” disc reader that won’t last forever, so having it digital guarantees a longer play time. So again, BE LOUD, PROTECT THE STORE LIKE WE DID BEFORE!
I revisited the PS3 during the quarantine too. I played Dead Space, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. That console has aged like a fine wine. In many ways, I prefer that gen over what we have today.
The eu storefront is arguably even worse, especially when trying to search for things like psp and ps1 classics. There are less than ten psp games that are displayed when using filters on the “all games” section.
Thanks to the modding community, nothing is truly coming to an end. PS3 has become incredibly easy to jailbreak and all the software can be obtained via the console itself completely free. We don’t need to rely on Sony any longer to preserve its history.
It's crazy how some things on the Store are still set at full price, some things being over $100 😭 they need to atleast put everything on a permanent sale or something
Pretty much boils down to piracy being a service issue and sony is doing a poor job giving actual customers a proper service while modders can offer an alternative thats infinitely better.
I remember when someone was told to jailbreak the PS3 when the PS4 released. He did an overly complicated method using its OpenOS. They removed it in a system update to all consoles to stop him. He then did an easier hack that gives even more features. They sued him. Resulting in a rogue member of the biggest hacker group in the world to immediately, without fail and without workaround, shut down all of PSN for a month. This jailbreaker was the guy who made the first jailbroken smartphone, doing it so he could have a cheaper internet provider for the smartphone, and that was back when Apple was based and congratulated him on it.
Recently just got a PS3 to play GTA4 and Skate 3, looking through the store broke my heart with how rough it is. I remember how amazing it was when it first released. Great video to watch. Im keeping my PS3 until the day i die.
@XBC3-4GOTY same, but my ps3 needs an update to access psn. Should l do it? I heard a while ago that the last update were bricking systems. Is that still true?
The big takeaway I didn't know from this video is that the licenses I bought for my PSOne classics bought on PS3 carried over onto PS5. Didn't know that they don't make you repurchase the games. That's cool. I wonder if that works for the PS2 Classics as well.
To answer the last part, unfortunately no. I had GTA Vice City as a PS2 classic on PS3 but it didn’t carry over to the PS4 release. So it’s even stranger they did do it for PS1 classics specifically.
That was a different situation than actual classics from Sony. I don't think we've gotten any PS2 games from Premiun releases that were on the PS3 store yet.@@strykah92
@@lemming9984 That should have been possible to do on PC though. I never looked too much into that before already having hacked my Vita, but there's the QMCA variant of the PS Vita content manager app which bypasses PSN and also lets you manage more file types and multiple backup copies at once. I'm not sure you even need a hacked Vita for that one to do a better job.
I can't be the only one that think this is an absurd. Imagine if steam took down all games from 2014 and back. PS should've made this store available on the ps5. The games on this store should be up as long as new human being are born.

Steam no longer supports Windows 8.1 or older so even though the old games are downloadable they may have issues. I had a Windows 7 retro gaming PC from 2010, but decided to reformat it to Linux after Steam pulled support (sacrificing a few games but getting a more useable PC).
Yeah it should last 100 years. That gives all owners enough time to use what they purchased. It's not that much server space. Or at the very least make new systems fully backwards compatible.
And 11 years later and they still havent done anything to make the digital games on it backwards compatible. Like Nintendo screwed over everyone who bought a Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. At least Microsoft kept a library of their store on current Xbox.
They’re too lazy to do that because even though they’re a AAA company, they don’t wanna spend millions of dollars to port more PS2 and PS3 titles to their newer comsoles cause that be “wasting money” to them.
It's so sad! This is the only way we can access the PS3 digital library, and it gets worse over time 😢 I personally don't want it to shut down until Sony finds a way to import the digital library to newer PS store... Thanks for the information, Ryan! Great, as always 👌👏🙌
I was 16, my wife was 12 (we were 28 and 24 when we met) when PS3 came out. I didn't actually get one until I was 20, but it still feels like just the right console that fit right in with my transition from being a kid to being an adult. You can even see the transition in my collections. My PS1 collection has all K-A/E games except one T game. My PS2 collection has a half and half number of E and T games, just one M game. Then my PS3 has a mixture of all of them, and a large number of M games.
I had mine for almost a decade now and I could’ve bought more physical PS3 games for cheap when PS3 was still relevant, instead I had to waste my time and money playing shitty sonic games like a dumbass.
@@calebproductions1264 Hold on, now. My PS3 has an excellent Sonic collection, 06 notwithstanding. Generations Unleashed Sega All Stars Racing 1-2 Genesis Collection I mean, come on. It's a great console for Sonic.
Something that was glossed over in this video, which makes the PS3 storefront even harder to use, is that it's not as simple as just adding wallet funds to your account to then buy the digital content. You'll receive an error if you have any kind of credit card linked to your PSN account. You have to remove all of your linked cards, then you can purchase your game and you'll have to re add your cards back to your PSN account.
I bought Silent Hill (PS1) through the US version of the store. Had to use a credit card to buy a digital 10-dollar voucher on PlayStation's site and add it to my US profile through the phone app. A bit overcomplicated, especially since I was doing this from Bulgaria, but it was definitely still feasible as of June 2024.
I remember my Dad's friend had bought his PS3 in the States when he was on a trip from his home country in the UK. He from then on had major issues buying anything through the store because he needed to purchase US PS Cards and get them sent to his address to put the funds in or it wouldn't work 😅😂. I had the same issue when my Dad was in the States and sent me a gift card to me in Canada, just for it not to work on my PlayStation store cause we were Canadian based 😂

Love that you're covering this. I frequent the ps3 store quite often as it's one of the last little nuggets of marketplaces where you can get classic PS1/PS2 games without having to pay premium due to egregious collector prices (which I contribute to). I always have at least like $20 in my wallet so I can pick up whatever ps3 psn store i'm looking at
On the UK store, there isn't a way to search for PS1 or PS2 classics. There's no game type for them. We also have a smaller selection which are only searchable on a per game basis. Also the majority of them are the PAL 50hz releases.
To me, this was the last real unique console generation. PS4 and xbox were basically identical, just with slightly different specs in favor of the ps4. And I cannot say I was really all that blown away by the graphics improvement over the ps3, not nearly as much as I was going from ps2 to ps3.
The PS3 store in the UK is basically broken. It's so slow and so much is now missing its getting to the point where they might as well put it out of its misery.
That's what Sony would want. Don't say things like that and maybe complain to them so they fix it and make it work. They are only doing this because they want you to only buy the new stuff. It's ridiculous.
I’m from the UK too with a modded PS3 Slim. Whatever is no longer available to me gets downloaded on the PKGi Store. Just like week I bought Symphony of the Night and Parasite Eve 2, so I have no issues still buying games either.
I’m so glad you made a video about this. I just was trying to buy games off the store about 2 weeks ago and boy was it a PAIN. I had to add funds to the wallet, DELETE MY CARD, buy the games, THEN add my card back in my account. The only way I could have it download/purchase.
You know what's the worse: the last update for PS3 (some months ago) broke PSP: now you can't copy content from PS3 to PSP, and even worse, some PSOne classic just stop working on PSP, disgusting situation.
It's also sad just how much has been delisted. Wanted to buy Soul Calibur 2 HD and Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day but I can't because the games aren't available to purchase. It's a complete bummer.
I actually was on the PS3 store last week to purchase some games like Killzone HD and Um Jammer Lammy, and I discovered the exact same filtering issue for the PSone classics. I had to fight my way to discover a ton of other PSone games that were on the store. It’s good these games are still there but it’s gonna be a more of a pain finding and discovering the last games I want from the store before it closes soon. I plan to get WipEout, Mega Man Legends games, Siren, Tokyo Jungle, and a few others, but it’s gonna get harder to find them in the store and find other games I wanna add to the list.
Just booted up my PS3 for the first time in years and was amazed at how slow the store was to load anything. Took multiple minutes just to get to the home page and then navigating it took just as long.
Its interesting cause the PS3 came out in that weird time where we were transitioning to digital store fronts. So even from an archival pov there should be incentive for Sony to keep it going or at least maintain it to some degree. There's real history there.
I kinda wish that Sony would change the storefront back to the more responsive and fast version prior to the PS4 makeover, but knowing Sony, they’ll probably remove another nice QOL feature from the PS3 instead.
I HAVE FOUND A WAY TO ACCESS THE OLD STORE FRONT! sorry for caps. At the main menu of Metal Gear Rising, select downloadable content and go to the PS store.

The truth is the ps3 and vita store were broken shortly after those original closure dates. Its there but there not supporting it. Last time i got on the vita store dozens of games store pages just wouldn't load
I don't think we should just expect that these stores are going to eventually go down. Keep the posture that it is unacceptable. It needs to be as painful as possible, so that the motivation to *not* do it remains stronger than the motivation to do it.
I wished they kept doing sale deals on PS3 store and have the ability to buy those games from PS5 to play on PS3. It would been really nice… I definitely recommend getting games that have platinum trophies. I’ve been going through every game that is digital only on PS3 and there’s about 111+ games on there that support Platinum Trophies while 600+ games have Gold, Silver, Bronze trophies. There are a few none trophies that came out before PlayStation did trophies which is cool which is small amount like 10+. There are still cross buy games that still work with both PS3 and Vita games so if you buy the game on sale from PS4/PS5 store you will get the PS3 or Vita versions.
I would assume (and I could be wrong about this) they would have to go through another licensing process before being published on another platform. It could also be why there’s many Xbox 360 games that weren’t added to the Xbox BC program despite still being available on the actual Xbox 360 store to this day.
@@rexthewolf3149 yeah I figured that's the usual case but if they had the licencing for them before why not now? Like they still sell the games digitally on PS3 and have done for years plus many of them are ps one exclusives etc so you couldn't get them anywhere else. When you see the startup on most ps one games it says published by Sony (SIE). If it truly is a rights issue then the rights holders are letting the games die rather than get easy money. I do admit Sony's priorities are out of whack when it comes to ps5 etc. They take forever to do anything (if anything) when customers and fans are screaming at them. Still desperately waiting for PS Plus Premium to be worth it, uploading one or 2 games here and there still ain't cutting it for most of us. It's on the rise but very very slowly.
@@ashwath5733 a lot of people actually. Like us who grew up with them and have a big connection to a lot of the older games. There's a big crowd for emulation, I've been playing some PS1 and PS2 games on my phone but id much rather play them on my ps5. There's also the preservation of games, a lot of games begin to disappear with no legitimate way of playing them which leads to piracy. We would hope the big companies could do something to prevent this and keep customers happy, especially if they already have the means to do this.
Yeah the PS3 was my childhood, plus was the first console I purchased digital games for. The original model I’ve had since 2006 with the backwards PS2 compatibility lasted for years and never once malfunctioned on me.
Even for people that generally only collect physical media they will still suffer from a PS3 store shutdown by not being able to buy DLC in the future for the games they like unless they buy it all now while the store is still active. (If you can find it in the awful menus). It will be sad to not be able to do this at some point in the future if I pick up a physical game for my collection after they do eventually close the store as I am sure I will still be growing my Physical PS3 collection for years to come.
As EU Swede I can say even the PS4/PS5 store seem to be falling apart as well. Have seen many instances of the wrong language for the story or stats of games. Games that have simply been 404 for years. Duplication of games without any way to tell what the difference there is, if any. It's just a mess.
I'm so glad that someone brought this up! I was going worried that my PS3 is getting broken! I have the exact same issues and observations on the UAE store, which is a sub-store from the European one. The number of games that are not listed but I found through search and bought is in the region of 20+! The entire storefront is so buggy and laggy that it drives me nuts when I want to get something on it! Definitely not a good sign for the longevity of this thing. I opened my PSN account on April 2007 and honestly still enjoy some of the first content I bought back then like Rub'aDub, Gran Turismo HD demo, and Siren: Blood Curse, which was my first ever full game digital download. The current state of the store is really ruining the nostalgia... Shame!
Best solution Sony can do, if PS6 is their next launch years from now, is make backwards compatibility all the way back from PS1, and make PS-Portal have a store front of backlog of PSP & Vita games.
Now that the Xbox 360 marketplace is done. I should get on my PS3 and look around. I have a modded 2TB backwards compatible console, with the Emotion card. I really need to use it more.

I would love to see a breakdown of what digital only PS3 games as well as Classics are only purchasable on the PS3 store. I’d like to make sure I buy everything I’d need before the eventual store closure.
I'm under the firm belief that the community pushback in 2021 to keep the stores open, pissed Sony off (they didn't get to do what they wanted to do, they lost to us)...and so they were just like "fine, we'll keep them open. But good luck getting them to work right as they erode away and we no longer update them". If the PS3 got one good firmware update (that wasn't just to update the Blu-Ray data), it'd probably function great again, but Sony knew without it...they'd be winning in the long run. The store gets so bad that no one wants to use it, so they shut it down anyways.
Search bar and cart is literally in Japanese, the demos 50% of them are not even real demos they just be offering the game. For some reason you can still look GTHD Concept which was a limited gt game released in 2006
I have been seeing similar nonesense on the XBOX store. I see games that are backwards compatible on sale on the 360 but NOT on newer consoles they are full price or "NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE" when viewed on newer consoles.
The tip about buying original versions of games and getting the PS4/PS5 versions is a good thing to share. I got The Last Frontier without realising, did the same with Daxter. £6.49 vs. £7.99 though, easy choice. It feels like a loophole that shouldn't exist, but there are probably so few people able to take advantage of it they haven't bothered going anything about it.
Greatly appreciated the video, as one of the two million or so who still plays on the PS3. I think the 'delisting' is due to an algorithm than automatically removes games that are more than ten years old from the lists.
I usually do buy PS1 games on the PS3 for cheaper so I can also unlock them for my PS4/PS5. HOWEVER, a couple of weeks ago, I tried doing it for Twisted Metal 1 and 2, but after purchasing them, they were still locked, even on my PS3! Thankfully, Sony still refunded me. I wanted to try it again, but I'm afraid it's going to bring up the same result. Oh well. Sooo thought you'd like to know. That's yet one more thing that's broken down with PS3's PSN store.
The delisted games are really the worst of it. I wanted to buy DLC for a game from my childhood (Monopoly Streets), only to find it's all gone since EA lost the rights to sell it
EA IS THE WORST!!! My favorite games as a kid were mercenaries 1 and 2. Haven’t heard of em? That’s because EA killed Pandemic Studios who made mercenaries and some of the OG Star Wars games. I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO BUY MERC 2 DIGITALLY!!!!!!!
I have been having the store freeze or just exit when I am in it for a good while. I had to reformat my PS3 hard drive a while back which sucked but I am enjoying playing all my games from scratch again. I am grateful that the store is still up too. I am constantly looking on there for classic games that I can't play on the PS4.
I have to comment on Japan Store language parts dripping into your American Store. That also always happened on PS4 and now still happens on PS5. So that one isn't just PS3 problem. That's how all three PS consoles still use cache data. It mixes up if you switch in between different languages. I also still have PS Store crashes, it closing, on PS5 if I browse it too much, especially after browsing two regions Stores.
I think even searching "PSOne" vs. "PS One" returns different results, almost like an intern wrongly tagged a game. I didn't think of searching for PS3 to find the PSOne classics. I'm gonna try that later today. Also, I didn't realize the licenses were forward compatible with PS4 and PS5. Thanks for the helpful info as always!
I had quite a long drawn out tech support back and forth With Sony regarding Grandia. I had previously purchased it in PS3 in like 2011 or something. And was expecting to be able to the download it on PS4. But it wasn't the case. It got weirder though as I wasn't even able to purchase it on PS4, any attempt to do so just went through to an error code. So I was incapable of purchasing it at all on PS4. Eventually they were able to add the licence to my account for PS4 and I now have access to it there. But it did take a while. Other games were more instantaneous. Especially the two that I bought on PS3 recently. Might have just been because of how long ago the Grandia purchase was perhaps.
So what happens if they stop allowing us to redownload games? Do we just lose all of the money we’ve ever spent on the store? Very concerning considering I have well over 600+ games on my account.
My bigger problem with it is how quickly it kicks me out of the store for any little thing. Also, the in-store download list has a smaller number of owned items than your actual (more functional) download list from account management.

The old bright blue and orange bubble tiles aesthetic and sound effects were brilliant. Real shame they changed it and never looked back.

It's inevitable that it is going to shut down eventually. It is already rotting away and barely functional as is
I revisited the PS3 during the quarantine too. I played Dead Space, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. That console has aged like a fine wine. In many ways, I prefer that gen over what we have today.

Thanks to the modding community, nothing is truly coming to an end. PS3 has become incredibly easy to jailbreak and all the software can be obtained via the console itself completely free. We don’t need to rely on Sony any longer to preserve its history.

But then they can't censor stuff in their new remaster they want to charge you for
Steam no longer supports Windows 8.1 or older so even though the old games are downloadable they may have issues.

I've never had to do that, use the ps3 store all the time too.
Not much better in Europe. But i usually buy physical for PS3 these days.
Its interesting cause the PS3 came out in that weird time where we were transitioning to digital store fronts. So even from an archival pov there should be incentive for Sony to keep it going or at least maintain it to some degree. There's real history there.
This is where a 'legacy' store for all 'retired' consoles could be useful, perhaps? Just a thought!

I wished they kept doing sale deals on PS3 store and have the ability to buy those games from PS5 to play on PS3. It would been really nice…
I definitely recommend getting games that have platinum trophies.
Theres so much on this store that, for some dumb reason, is not on the PS4/5 stores. So many PS One classics that still exist on the PS3 store.
I would assume (and I could be wrong about this) they would have to go through another licensing process before being published on another platform. It could also be why there’s many Xbox 360 games that weren’t added to the Xbox BC program despite still being available on the actual Xbox 360 store to this day.
The fact all those ps one games are still on PS3 begs the question why are they not on ps5
Licensing and overall priorities
@@rexthewolf3149 yeah I figured that's the usual case but if they had the licencing for them before why not now? When you see the startup on most ps one games it says published by Sony (SIE). If it truly is a rights issue then the rights holders are letting the games die rather than get easy money.
I do admit Sony's priorities are out of whack when it comes to ps5 etc. They take forever to do anything (if anything) when customers and fans are screaming at them.
There’s always ways to get it, just not by official means.
Shame!
It's just so bizarre that they've made it so difficult for me to give them money...
Cuz they want it to die. It’s sad, but true
I bought my ps3 in 2010 for my 12 Birthday i feel old
Only buy discs you never know when its coming down. Thank god i got everything physical on my ps3
Not every single game is physical tho
I’m pretty sure KickAss 1 for PS3 is a digital only game. And that game so bad it’s good. Still have it downloaded. 😂
@@sparker.24 im saying that if you have the option disc is better i have bought myself digital games and didnt have a problem with them. I just cant justify ps3 digital prices and you mever know especially on ps3 when the whole thing comes down. Also inside ps3 there is a battery that if it goes bad you cant access sony servers so for perservation thats another plus only on ps3 though
I was on my Xbox 360, I was getting as much as I could, RIP XBOX 360 MARKETPLACE.
I witnessed the transition to retro, Xbox live is still up for now, but I witnessed history, I'll never forget that error screen, the one that showed when you tried to buy something...
Long live the 360
I hate that there's a large selection of PS3 digital games that you cannot buy including socom 4, all of the 007 games and Resistance 3
Thankfully it's still open. It's funny how often I keep going back to it to buy games I have missed out on lol
Same here, I still download games and demos from the store.
The duct tape holding it together is peeling off. lol
Aw man. That's pretty funny.
Hint, don't try buying the twisted metal games, the purchasing is broken it took me a month with tech support to get a refund
Search bar and cart is literally in Japanese, the demos 50% of them are not even real demos they just be offering the game. For some reason you can still look GTHD Concept which was a limited gt game released in 2006
Nice intro. I miss the old ps3 logo when we used to start up games.
I still occasionally buy stuff on the PS3. Trying to have what I need for when it inevitably goes down.
Same.
Still working?
@@dawizzynally8022 yes it still works though if you want to buy games on there you can use playstation gift cards on that shop.
Yeah just not very functional...@@dawizzynally8022
Was more a 360 player back in the day but now i love my ps3 more and will be gutted when the store goes.
Thanks for doing this mystic
It’s time I dig out my PS3 and start looking through and games I’d want that I may play at some point.
@FerrariTeddy EA are certified opps in my book.
That makes sense. 8 months ago, I spent about 2 hours going through the avatar icons because of how bad the store interaction is, lol.
So what happens if they stop allowing us to redownload games? Do we just lose all of the money we’ve ever spent on the store? Very concerning considering I have well over 600+ games on my account.
Thanks for bringing light to this. I was complaining about this literally yesterday. I can't find DLC worth crap either
PS3 and Vita are my daily. 💎💎
My bigger problem with it is how quickly it kicks me out of the store for any little thing. Also, the in-store download list has a smaller number of owned items than your actual (more functional) download list from account management.
I'm still using my PS3. Playing Overlord 2 and downloaded Spec Ops The Line. I think after that, I'll buy a few PSOnes classics and call it a day on that console....🙁
Honestly looking at the ps3 store makes me sad I was young ash when this came out so I was a bit late on the store 2012 2013 but I remember being on the store for hours just looking at shit it’s crazy how not too long after it looks like this
You can still buy Gran Turismo PSP (2009) on PS3. A game with licensed cars. Forza motorsport 1-7 were delisted in comparison
Gotta figure this out, so I can grab God Hand. It's absolutely criminal that it's not on modern consoles.
@Mystic thanks for highlighting this! Would be great if you can do a long video for your obscure (and not so) ps3 recommendations, in addition to the video you already did some time ago?
For me, I just hope that players can continue to download the games they have purchased on PSP, PS3, XBOX360, etc.
It saves to your Account so you should be able to yes
