      I'd actually like to see how sloppy the heads are, that's always been a reason I wouldn't use ratchets from harborfreight, the flex head had too much flex lol and endup busting knuckles. I think icon personally should of started with a indexing flex head. I do love my snap on ratchets I have invested heavily in them this year alone I bought 10 or 12 new snap on ratchets, I don't have a matco dealer so I finally bit the bullet and ordered online, I wanted the pink ratchets ended up going wild and buying 8 ratchets and 2 40th anniversary edition black chrome ratchets so I think I'm set for a while.

    • @RedemptionGarage
      @RedemptionGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@T6Tarek do you mean sloppy at the joint? I took the torq bolt out put good loctite on it and tightened it down and now its new so it will wear but i put a 1 inch impact socket on it and shook it up and down and it held pretty good. Or are you meaning something else?

    • @T6Tarek
      @T6Tarek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedemptionGarage definitely in the joint but not just the screw coming loose. I just felt like the head itself was so sloppy you can rattle it in your hand and see it flop around back and forth. The other brands I use there is enough friction that itll stay some what in place, I dont know if that makes sense or not.

    About testing to failure......Believe it or not, back in 1998, while I was bolting an electrical cabinet to a concrete floor, I actually busted out a Husky 3/8 ratchet by hand (no cheater pipe involved) So, it does happen. . . . . . I truly believe that Snap On really does does make the world's best ratchets. But if we all agree that you can buy a very good wrist watch without buying a Rolex, you can but a very good sedan without buying a Mercedes-Benz, then you can also buy a very good ratchet without buying a Snap On. . .

    That is the whole point in why alot of ppl get discouraged in what they are viewing especially when they see a Review on a particular tool and who ever is narrating and demonstrating the Review putting the tool through a stress test but then the viewers who are either not a professional or mechanically inclined tends to overlook the fact that in these stress test in the real world of things these same tools are not put under the load and push to the limits that they are visualizing from watching videos displaying either a torture test or stress test on a tool the same tools that are being demonstrated in these videos are being push to a limit that the next size up is what is supposed to be use for in the higher application of torque range No matter what the tool or Brand a tool is only as good as the individual handling it ...its the individuals skill set that makes the tool just like a artist ... it's not the instruments that the artist use to manifest a masterpiece it's the creativity of the fine handle of the instrument that paints a perfect picture No Matter what the tool or Brand there's no such thing as a better lead pencil or Crayon when manifesting and creating a perfect picture it's the creativity in ones handle You Take care of your tools and your tools will take care of you imagery is a very strong powerful tool there's a Gentleman trying to break a car lug nut with a 3/8" Flexhead ratchet that's like trying to break a overly torque fastener with a ratcheting wrench knowing that ...that is a 1/2" application completely all backwards a tool that is being used for something that it is not designed for and neither would it had been a standard handle especially in a 3/8" Drive

    • @johnlong5899
      @johnlong5899 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. I rarely pull a 3/8 drive ratchet beyond 100 ft/lbs for the reasons you state and it's why 3/8 and 1/2 drive sockets sizes have such a huge overlap. The ultimate strength test of 200 plus ft/lbs for a 3/8 drive just tells me it's a good ratchet. Increasing ultimate strength could very well mean increasing back drag which I absolutely do not want. Or it could mean going with exotic alloys raising the price of the ratchet. It's a balancing act juggling cost and performance.

    I don't see any reason to change over to Icon. Tools look good 👍, just not different enough. The selection is also very small, no singles sockets/wrenches. Gearwrench/tekton and others have a bigger selection. Quality? Meh they about the same as all the other Taiwan tools, reminds me alot of the previous duralast tools that where made in Taiwan. The best thing they have was the length of the ratcheting wrenches.

    I bought the 1/2" and 1/4" Icon flex head chrome handle ratchets and I took them and added white grease to the internals. Both of mine had no grease and after greasing them they are buttery smooth on the back drag. I do use mine daily and I like them the new flex heads. I had a 3/8" flex head by Bonney (a company that went out of the tool business in 1995) that I had since 1983 and I love that ratchet I just did not want to pay the price of the better quality flex heads on the market. Why did I wait so long??? Comfort grips are uncomfortable for me as I have smaller hands and it feels like a rag stuffed between my hand and the ratchet handle. As you said it is a matter of personal preference.

    I got a 3/8 drive standard length. I opened it up and it looked dry. I lubed it and gave it a workout. It broke in nice (I could be wrong....maybe it was factory lubed with light oil...I dunno). The soft grip feels righteous. Not sure yet if I like the way the reverse lever protrudes verses embeded. I tend to favor detents for the flex head but I understand they fix your angle of attack. Maybe HF will offer options like they are doing with the open ends of the wrenches.

    I purchased a 9-1/16” long non comfort grip 3/8” Icon ratchet for $33 after tax and using the 10% coupon. That is on par with the competition. I intended to buy a comfort grip but the handles are just way to fat for me and is the sole reason I don’t use my Pittsburgh Pro ratchets that often. But the non comfort grip definitely has a nice feel to it and I look forward to using it today. My only gripe (not a deal breaker) is the directional lever. They copied the Snap-on design and it is the one thing I hate about my Snap-on ratchets. I wish they would have designed something a bit more low profile. I actually got my hands on some of the other offerings from Icon and they definitely seem like nice quality and if they had a 20% coupon I would be all over them. The shelf price is just a bit high for me but I’m actually in no need for any tools so someone with a direct need may disagree with me.

    Test #1.. The weight & balance of conparable tool.
    Test #2.. They work well in the heat, as some tools tend to get sloppy or loose and some times very hard to move, while sitting out in the sun.,
    How do they work in the cold too?
    Test #3.. spinnin the head (maybe connecting a deap socket an belt to a motor & let her rip lol), how does the PAW's & teeth handle in long term use...

      I just did a giveaway a week ago and havent finished that yet and i do plan on doing maybe more in the future and on my patreon page a monthly giveaway i am doing an icon ratchet giveaway on there this month. When i finish the other giveaways i will see what is going on it takes me probably 16 hours of my time to do one giveaway and it is not easy. Keep your eye out though. Thanks for the suggestion.

      @@truckerpeterose i was giving him advise. take a look at any youtuber with a million plus subscribers. they all have shorter intros. It helps with keeping viewer engaged in content. Thanks for your comment.
