I do a lot of leather tooling on the side, and have spent thousands of dollars on buying the best tools money can buy. I met a guy whose in the top 5% in the world. His work is stunning. He had only a handful of very cheap tools, and he does the most beautiful work you ever seen.
I learned a great lesson from this man. For most of your tools, you can get bye with whatever’s on hand, when you need something special which is going to be used frequently, then spend on something quality, but even then it might not need to be the best (sometimes it does)

@@PaulyD0859 I've always said it's better to buy quality than to have a cheap tool break in the middle of a job. It's frustrating, time consuming and can screw up your whole schedule not to mention a job not getting done on time. And there goes the money you saved on the cheapo's ! That's me. I had a ratchet break, an extension break, screw drivers and pliers in the past to name just a few.

Straight up truth, your skill is what makes the mechanic, like most I have a mix of Snappy, Matco, MAC and ancient Craftsman from when I first started in the 80’s, my boxes are Snappy and cost a fortune. Your skill makes you, not the tool brand. With the exception of specialty tools I use some of good alternative brands now.

Starting out get something good with a warranty that you can afford. Once you have gotten established and have a nice bank account then you can start looking at the more expensive tool truck brands if that's what you have always wanted. Don't go into debt early in your career when you can wait just a couple of years and not have to finance tools to start building that Snap-on collection you have wanted since you were 14. I'm not for or against any tool brand it's just a damn tool to get a job done, worry about doing a good job. Stay the hell out of debt.

Another good vid! And your opinion I totally agree, I’m not a 40+ hour a week mechanic, that being said I do enjoy turning wrench and working on my own trucks, equipment etc! It make NO sense to me “imho” to spend that much on a COMMON tool! Yes if it’s a special tool or one you put food on ur table with,,,,,absolutely! Great vid, great teaching! And as ALWAYS, watching ur vids is like walking into one of my friends shop, brother don’t change nothing ur doing! Gods blessed you with a platform, and ur making sense! Keep rolling! If ur taking request,,,,,,,snap on is so stinking high, most of my friends don’t even bother unless it’s specialty, but maybe a comparison with Icon against ur lower end stuff anyway like ur tekton, kobalt, husky, the “”more affordable” tools just a thought, great job friend!

One of my most popular and loved photos was taken with a relatively inexpensive point and shoot camera. High end gear is great, but ultimately it's the photographer that will make a photo good or bad.

I especially don’t buy specialty tools off the trucks because they rebrand most of that stuff. They’re all selling Lisle, OTC, Lang et al rebranded tools, after they about double the price. Mac is owned by Stanley/Black and Decker, Matco only makes tool boxes (all their other tools are made FOR them) and Snappy (although they make some of their own stuff) either sells stuff made in China just like everyone else or, they assemble stuff in the US that was made in China.

The finally got a few Icon things at my HF. I was looking at them today. The small chrome non-cushin grip 1/4" ratchets had an unbelievable amount of back drag, maybe the worst I have ever felt in my life (i find that so annoying when I am trying to get a bolt out and it starts turning it both ways) The larger ones were okay though, but pretty thick large heads. The sockets are okay but a much thicker wall than I thought. The combos are beautiful wrenches and will really compete with Snap On in a big way. The reversible ratcheting wrenches not so much. They are bigger on the ratchet end than Snappy's (which is huge for clearance), and they have quite a bit of back drag as well. They are good for the money, but not as good as my Snappy and Williams ratcheting wrenches.

The only issue I have with Icon is they're crazy if they think I'm dropping that money on a tool box when any reputable tool dealer can get you close, or even below those prices. I'm not a tool truck junkie, I've got two boxes 55" and 72" boxes(snap-on) but inside is everything from craftsman, proto, greenlee, us general to Mac matco and snap-on. I don't care what tools you run, but imho snap-on has the thinnest sockets, and slimmest wrenches for tight knuckle busting places. Out of all the brands, craftsman might be the worst and will only grab a craftsman tool if I have to modify or beat on it to get a job done. Just my 0.02c

I would have preferred to use a 1/2" with a adapter, but the ones I have don't have the length. Needless to say, I'm going to HF and getting the 1/2" Pittsburgh ratchet. The tool did me right. The best way to go about buying tools is to have a good balance. Buy ratchets, sockets, wrenches, etc from other, more inexpensive brands. And then tools like pry bars, picks, and torque wrenches should be bought through Snap On or another tool truck brand. Plenty of good companies like Tekton and Gearwrench make great ratchets and sockets.

I think a better comparison in price would be comparing like items with each other, basic metric or standard socket sets in 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 a ratchet in each drive as well, to basic combination wrench sets in standard and metric, pliers, screw drivers, hammers, and a small service carts. Using the us general gen 2 service cart, fill it with just a basic starter kit. Price out all tools comparing icon, to snap on, Mac, matco or cornwell. Just something to show beginners what you would generally use starting out, or even for the diy guys. I’ve seen people show personall top 5’s for beginners all over TH-cam , have not seen an overall what you would normally need as a beginner or diy mechanic. I’d love to see a mini series on that. Have some ideas for a kit kind of like that,if you need or want any.

I like this. I think this is how all fresh apprentices should be pushed towards. Get you making money right out the gate. To many videos of “the perfect apprentice box” 15,000$ box with 2 drawers half full of tool truck products. Nah you go the Home Depot pick up a 52” rolling bottom for 400$ Canadian you go pay 600$ on what you had there and you’re making money. For less then 1000$ then you go pawn shop to pawn shop pick through the 20 cent loose sockets find some good rare goodies as well as complete 1/4” metric, sae sets
    3/8” metric, sae sets
    1/2” so on so forth.
I won’t lie I’ve got a socket drawer worth 6-8 grand but a lot of those sockets were bought at pawn shops where I paid 15-40 cents a piece I paid 30 cents a piece for the 40-50 random snap on , Mac sockets I found lying in the haystack.
First spend little to make $$$ and get that ticket then do whatever you want. I eventually moved home the original pawnshop sockets and what not perfectly functioning box at home now and the replacements are at work the second socket drawer I built is much more then 6-8 grand but I got that using my less expensive tools
    Great vids man !

Seasoned journeymen should appreciate what Icon is doing so they don't have to loan out their good shit to the apprentice. In my life as a millwright, that's just how it worked. Great video. I think Icon can be a great alternative to the tool trucks when starting out. If your not completely happy with them a few years later when your established in the trade, you can start swapping them out then...when you can better financially afford it. You may find you like SK sockets better but Matco ratchets better. Their is plenty of time to figure it out.
It is a new kid on the block and ofcourse all the bullies are gonna pick on them till they prove themselves over the test of time.
Everyone should buy the best quality they can afford at the time. Don't get in over your head early in your career.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions and many are more than willing to share their's...just like I have. Don't let anyone bully you. Take pride in what you do and what you have. Don't listen to the hype or the haters.
As for me, the Icon line is to rich for my blood. I'll stick to my mix match craftsman, snap on, Pittsburgh, and mac sockets...of which I can only warranty the craftsman and Pittsburgh ones. The others are second hand and tool truck drivers won't warranty them.

Dag man I see what you trying to do ..but you can only show what you have in your possession to display and demonstrate when providing the viewers with a clear cut vision ... I dont own any Icon Tools but I do own alotta High end Quality equipment and just like you said mostly every mechanic has a back up ...My back up is layed out in 3 different layers but my 3rd layer testically compared to the first 2 is not of a tool truck Brand but is trying to come up in the automotive field with some real good Quality and a authentic design line of tools which is Milwaukee...Now I do own just about everything that they have to offer especially when coming to there hand tools and General service socket sets and wrenches which not for nothing the Quality on them are just completely different testically to all the tool truck equipment I possess....You know the SNAP-ON and Matco and MAC is always going to be what it is which I use all of this equipment daily but when I handle the equipment I have by Milwaukee...I dont know it's just different....you know the saying when you hold a Quality tool you can feel the difference....mostly ppl will say that when handling a SNAP-ON Ratchet testically Compared to just say a Pittsburgh Ratchet but the point I'm trying to make is that these Milwaukee Sets Give me that feeling to a SNAP-ON like how a SNAP-ON would be to a Pittsburgh Now as your Displaying a actual MSRP Price Comparison amongst the tools in Demonstration I'm viewing what's layed out on the table and you made a key point about you should be able to get your job done so when I'm seeing the Price differential I'm saying to myself dag man how you are showing this if you had the full 1/4" 50pc service set and 3/8" 56pc then both sets of just simply the combination open ends not even the ratcheting and the 2 service sets come with ratchets extensions and swivels all Metric and SAE in each set which is a decent reasonable amount of tools that don't exceed the price range that you were displaying but you definitely hit some key points I see exactly what you are showing and I made this statement because you went compare a wrench set a Ratchet and a Chisel set to a variety of tools by a non tool truck Brand

I like how harbor freight is getting quality tools now, but at same time they are known for budget friendly... Lots of companies have made equivalent tools for awhile now so I don't see this as revolutionary and the prices aren't what I'd expect.. think channelocks,Williams,sk,Mayhew and couple others.. specially if u price shop and these are proven brands and to an OCD person only having a few icon tools wouldn't cut it. Otherwise I like how they are getting quality just think they missed Mark on pricing being no track record and it is harbor freight

@@chrisjones6165 Complete agree; excellent tools can be had for very little money. How? Here's an example: Quite a few tools on Amazon live on an algorithm that keeps lowering the price until a purchase is made. Fill your cart with the tools you want, then check it at least once a day for pricing changes. Another example, say you're looking for a hammer. Search the entire site for hammers and then sort by lowest price. You'll instantly see the algorithm errors. It's absolutely remarkable how little can be paid for desirable tools.

The only thing I buy off of a tool truck are specialty tools. I get to take my Wife and Kid's on vacation every year twice plus buy expensive ball pythons, guns, and have a 9 second Buick GS. And the reason I have it all is because my box cost me 800 instead of 15k, I have every tool needed for under 10k and haven't had to buy off of a truck for 3 years. I should have went into owning a tool truck then I wouldn't have to beat my hands up because there's a million sucker's out there spending 25% of their paychecks or more on tools. I think every mechanic out there should go through a finances class and realize they're being suckered by these tool corporations. I checked out the new Icon tools today. They are just overpriced for what they are. If you want my opinion, the Channellock branded Taiwan tools are better across the board except for the ratchets. The wrenches are the exact same wrenches at 1/2 the price. The sockets have better fit finish and features for around 10 to 15 less. Now lets look at ratchets. I can buy Wright Tool made in USA for what these cost. Or Gear Wrench for significantly less.
