  • In today's how to, I install an updated ignition coil (magneto style) in my grandmas old school 5hp Briggs & Stratton horizontal shaft engine. This new ignition coil is plug & play with no adjustments needed! A very much needed improvement over those pesky points!
Find an updated ignition coil here:

Hi Marty. I picked up a 1980 Mountfield tiller with a Briggs 5hp vertical shaft engine for next to nothing a few months ago here in the UK. After watching this video a few times (as I had literally ZERO experience in this and no spark), I finally got round to looking at it last week and following your instructions, even on how to find parts codes etc, I installed a new magneto and plug and gave it a service and BINGO! Up and running like a dream from a non-starter. Thank you for your straight forward, well explained instructions. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Dean.

Hello DF , Did you buy part no 397358 , like Marty showed on Video ? As mine is also vertical shaft B&S 5hp. Regards John

@@emclearance5694 Hi there. Yes I did. I first followed Marty's advice on how to track down the correct part code and as it happened, I thereby confirmed that the same part code was correct for mine. I bought an aftermarket part here in the UK for around £18 and it worked a charm.

This helped me get my free garage sale tiller up and running- much better than the 1975 factory point system- Thanks!

A couple of years ago, my neighbor set out a little chipper next to the road with a free sign on it. I snatched it up, but it didn't have spark. I figured that the condenser was bad and I shoved it in the corner for a later date to deal with.
The other day, someone down the road was giving away a pressure washer that had some issues and I snatched that up as well. Both B&S 5HP, chipper being the older model. I took the magneto off of the pressure washer and put it on the chipper. Walla, chipper has spark again.
    Thanks for sharing

Take the pull shroud off, and squirt some oil inside of the pull shaft. The dry bearings inside are what make that squeeling noise.

Good job Marty. That squeal is probably coming from that aluminum starter hub that you took off to remove the flywheel. You can take it off and carefully remove the cap on it. There are ball bearings inside keep an eye on them don't loose them. Clean everything up, reinstall the bearings in all their pockets and put the cap back on. You can apply a little oil not grease on the bearings before installing the cover. There is usually a small hole in the center of the stem that goes into the recoil thayou can put a tiny amount of oil in it to lube the bearings. A quick fix you can just put a little oil in the Hale and work the starter hub to free the sticky bearings up. Then when you are done with your tilling, take it apart and clean everything up. The squeal will get louder over time if you don't clean it up. Hope this helps. Ray Campbell

This is the exact model I have only it's a Sears badge I stead of Wards badge. I think it's the magneto as well because it sat in a field for years before I got it.

I am not a mechanic and I dont really wanna tear this thing apart to fix it. This is a good place to start. Thanks.

Why not cut the wire to the points on the old ignition to avoid having to take the flywheel off since the new does not use it anyway.

What I'd like to know is why the hell didn't they just go with the simple Ignition coil to begin with?

I dont think your grandma would like you smacking on the starter clutch like that, She would have used the right tool. Or she would have approved of you using channel lock pliers and your chisel to wedge to keep the flywheel from turning.
