Electronic Ignition Coil Replacing Points on 3HP Briggs

  • The 2, 3, 3-1/2, 3-3/4 and 4 Horsepower flathead Briggs motors all use the same flywheel diameter (but NOT flywheel!). This fact allows you to swap a 2015 Briggs push mower ignition coil onto say a 1972 Briggs 3 horse water pump motor with very little work! Briggs switched from points type ignition to electronic ignition (Magnetron) in about 1982, so any Magnetron from 1982 and up until 2015 when they stopped making the flathead engines, should fit onto the older engines that have the 2 bolt mount for the coil. Generally the 62XXX, 82XXX, 92XXX, 10P (4 horse), and model 110XXX 4 horse coils would all fit onto an older motor. As I mention in the video, these newer coils will fit and get the engine running again, however some of the newer coils have been redesigned for lower speed starting, exhaust emissions etc. I have tested them all out, and they seem to interchange fine.

    Great info

Given the simplicity of the points based system, it's easy enough to service anyway (unless the coil is utterly kaputt), condenser can be replaced, points can be filed and adjusted, doesn't really need replacing, just maintaining... :)

Yes, that is true, if an electronic goes bad, replacement time!

When putting the new electronic coil on it, do you need the flywheel of the one the new ignition came of, or as long as it fits an the diameter is the same can you use the old flywheel?

You can use an older flywheel, but the magnet on it must look similar to the one on the flywheel of your electronic engine. The very old Briggs engines I will say from the 1950s and early 1960s have a flywheel with 2 separate magnets, that will look different. That flywheel will not fire the electronic ignition. That being said, 805Roadking has used an old Briggs points type coil, and fabri-cobbled it together with a Tecumseh electronic magneto, to make it work with the old 2 magnet style flywheel! Quite inventive, he is.

I’m having hard time finding a magnetron that fits my 3HP Briggs. Do you have a part number by chance?

I would try a 591420 Magnetron ignition, it should fit. Even one of the cheap ones from Chins on ebay should work. The actual Briggs type costs like $50, while the knock off are like $15. Also one from any Briggs 3.5 horse type lawnmower engine should fit also, I interchange them all the time :)

How do you mount and wire the electronic ignition.
