I was a temporary test technician (a rent-a worker arrangement) at an engine lab in Michigan, at a large corporate engine lab. They had several dyno rooms, and one of their ways of making it safe and quieter in those rooms was that they hooked the exhaust to flexible exhaust tubing, to outdoor vertical stacks outside, then up to near the height of the roof. They had the same flapper lids as on semi trucks. One of their dynos ran a generator, along with testing the engine in that one, which added to building power. One other feature was that there were rows of CO2 bottles, with fire suppression nozzles, through automated controls. There was also a loud alarm, so people wouldn't be suffocated. It was a different experience walking outside, while all those engines were going through their paces, which varied according to the test.

It would be very hard to melt a piston with mixtures above stoich. As your dyno operator would know EGTs and power will drop after about 14.7- 15.0 afrs (petrol) It may run fluffy and carry on but thats about it. (Not that I would ever tune an engine around those mixtures)
Your Dyno operator must love all the cool engines he gets to tinker with.
FRASHD tuning Running lean is EXACTLY how you melt pistons. I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

Generators are limited in the amount of load they can produce, and those capable of producing the load required to test many high performance engines would be large, heavy, and VERY expensive.
What you're proposing would require the operator to have many different output generators to mate with various engines producing different levels of power.
Keep in mind as well that engine dynos are not being used for hours/days on end with one engine. Possible power production would be minimal.

How many foot pounds is that dyno rated to?
That is exactly what I thought, when he was out of the Tonight Show the first time. He could have done a show a lot like this on the weekly basis and be very successful.

Jay leno Chris Titus and Tim Allen , now I would love to watch that. It would take those three to compete with Britian's TG.
It's just a case of convenience. If you wanted to know how much power your car is putting to the road or see the effects of modifications you wouldn't want to pull the engine out, you'd want to roll it on and strap it down. But when you're rebuilding an engine and it's out of the car then you'd want to use this kind of dyno. For companies that manufacture crate motors or performance parts this is perfect because it focuses on the engine.

yes it is, it uses mechanical fuel injection, very modern and high tech for a car engine in those days.
I wish I could be a comedian as successful as Jay. Unfortunately, since I'm an engineering student, my sense of humor has been erased.

You can get the engine tuned perfectly. When you install it in your car, it starts instantly. He must really be doing a lot of restorations. Is he restoring & selling cars?

should be in the when they're holding it at 2500 rpm its at 11:1 pig rich I run my car at 11.8:1 at 17psi of boost , then they went right lean .Jay you need a tuner at your garage...I'm your man! :D

I don't understand one thing- why these "load-testers" cannot be based on generator to deliver the necessary load, in the same time produce electricity...

Isn't that motor running a little too rich at idle? 11:1 AFR at idle seems to rich, but maybe that engine needs that?
Leno has said it wouldn't be possible to do a show like Top Gear in America since there's too much corporate control to allow the hosts the freedom to rip on the cars, etc. And as you can tell from the POS show we got, he was right.

I think he turned the job down though because like the rest of the world he respects the original BBC show. Unlike history channle that dosn't even respect its own shows, which is why we ended up with cajun pawn stars, copying Pawn Stars.
