      Hi mate,
      Hope all is well.
      I follow you on Social. You are super inspirational.
      Just thought I will drop a quick message just to get some advice on black roof tiles as you use them quite a bit on your renovations.
      I wanted to use the black roof tiles on my current renovation. I just wanted to know which is a good manufacturer to go with. I have been recommended few by the roofers by their opinions vary greatly. To name a few I have been advised to used Marley, Crest, Redland. The reason I have reached out to you for advice is that I have noticed quite a few houses which have had black roof tiles but it has not even been like 5 years since they got it done but the top coat is fading and you can see the cement or the white look which looks crap. But then there are other black roof tiles that has been there for over 15 years and offcourse the colour has gone a little dull but it does not look white by the faded top coat so quality and manufacturer does play a role.
      Thank you

    What dictates the size of the ridge/hip tiles? Roof pitch? Arch spec? Roofers preference? Great content as ever. Will’s a natural on camera.

    • @shaunlucas3810
      @shaunlucas3810 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing really, you've got 3 types 1/3 round hip used on hips, half round ridge used for ridges. Or a segmental, which is a hybrid of the 2 what can be used for both hip and ridge (which these guys have used) my personal preference for plain tiles would be bonnets up the hip, but like you said that's down to roofers preference.

    Pardon the dumb question, but I saw one of these roofs done in Bath, England, and they were using prefabricated lead fixtures for the hips. So I assumed that this was common practice, but now I see mortar being used. So which is the most common practice in UK? I have to imagine mortar is way cheaper.

  • @siebensunden
    @siebensunden 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was interesting. I've never seen before fixing side tiles with a mortar. We usually use special side tiles, or metal plate profiles we bent ourselves, which is cheaper for the customer.

  • @markhook2547
    @markhook2547 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That roof is bang on!! What good quality work!!
    I noticed on the verge that the under-cloak is tile. We have this on our house, but needs to be replaced. Been their nearly 70 years, so not done too bad. However, starting to fail.
    Ours sit on the masonry gable wall (no barge board. I know they would need to be re bedded, but how would you get them lined up straight and keeping them the same distance overhanging the wall? I thought of screwing some temporary 3-2 timber on the gable wall to get the straight edge, but also to keep the same overhang up to the ridge. (Is this makes sense) I’m not a roofer, but I give anything a go and don’t like shoddy. Ia there any easier way of doing it?

    Im curious, but doesn't the ridge need to be vented. I understand it is a cold roof but wouldn't make sense to allow for air circulation so that the attic could be converted into a room or would that result in a new roof structure?

      As it is the air goes in one side at gutter level and out the other side. The scaffold platform is lower than gutter level and most of the ridge is just on head height so probably nowhere near enough height for a room up there.
      It was not shown but it looked like there was a new extension added that was all new timber at 3.44 that was all done at the same time.
