@@arcbrush Restoration is keeping the same look of the home and using as muck as you possibly can of what is already there. For example, you use the old doors you sand them and paint them. Keep the same style baseboards. Keep the same hardware etc
Problem with that is that in many locations it requires new building permits and those can be almost impossible to fulfill. You can circumvent that calling it a renovation
@@TriciaBooth Hello Tricia, most municipalities require a permit to tear down a structure. Many municipalities will put the new owner through holy hell to build from scratch once the old building is completely removed. That is why they typically but not always have a loophole in that requirement. That is that at least one wall of the original dwelling must remain. Some cities or counties require 50% of the old home must remain. If leaving part of the structure is taken than a renovation is the way to go. This is what this video appears to be demonstrating. Also, the old structure may allow a person to get property tax breaks if the house is old enough and historical. You could not get that advantage if it was torn down. Property taxes can be very steep depending on the state you live in so mitigating them, if possible, is the wisest option. Be well.
Interesting video. My sister was a building inspector. She said this owner still would have to get permits for the restoration. That would include the structural restoration, which the owner had to get approval for by the municipalities Engineers, and permits for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, etc.. He also may have had to abate (meaning remove) the old septic system( which requires its own permit) and either install a new one or hook up to municipal sewer system. All, not some, must be inspected before the next stage could ever start. If this restore was in the Western United States, he would have had to completely remove the old foundation and pour a new one. Earth quakes are common there. They also happen in the Southern States and Eastern seaboard but not as often. This means seismic reinforcement is not a big priority. Looks like the owner is going to get a lovely home in the end. Congrats.
This house is about a quarter mile from where I live and I drive by it all the time always wondering what would become of it. I had no idea the amount of work you were doing to the inside because the outside barely changed. What a fantastic job you guys did on this place! I was always hoping someone would restore it, and you have done an outstanding job. Thank you!

Where is the original home? There is nothing about his house that is 100 years of age. The guy built a brand new modern home. It's nice but not authentic. Great job building a beautiful newly built home in the Woods.
When viewing these old home renovations, I'm always fascinated to see the rough-cut lumber used for studs and beams because they weren't dimensional. I bet that not one stud or stick in that house had the same dimensions. It's remarkable they were ever able to get a square corner. The other point is how well preserved the wood is. If it didn't need to be recut to standard dimensions, you could easily reuse it. Wood: nature's wonder material.
The one thing that looks odd to me in the finished shots, is the lack of a hearth or mantle on the fireplace. Adding those would make it much more attractive and usable. Great job renovating this house!
I did build 2 new houses and remodeled 3 old ones in USA. Remodeling is always cheaper. You do not have to pay for old house removal, you have ready foundation, walls, roof. My last project was to change 3 chicken coops into a house. I invested $20K and result is wonderful.600 sq feet little guest house. For $20K you can not build today a basement. Within 2 years I got my money back from renters.

In most of the world, I believe that removing the old house and building a new one would make more sense, unless time is not an issue, and labor cost means nothing to this guy.

Beautiful workmanship, high skills with the excavating machines. There was a lot of rotten wood, and the demolition, especially of the floors, looked dangerous to the guys. Tearing the cabin down and rebuilding would have been safer and less restrictive regarding design, but the owners must have had nostalgia for the old structure. A lot of hard, skillful work. Congratulations.
First of all IT'S NOT NEW!!!! I believe that, counting the over-involved tear-out time, you could have leveled it and built an entirely new house from scratch. There is bad engineering and over-aged materials still present in this patchwork structure. Bravo for the man-hours and materials you were willing to invest in your vision.
I have to wonder if it would not have been better, more cost effective, and time-wise, to raze it to the ground and start anew? With SO much that had to be replaced...
Great work.. even though tearing it down and building something new would’ve been cheaper, they did achieve their goal in preserving as much of the original structure as possible.. as long as they are happy with the outcome that’s most important.. personally, it’s a lot of work done preserving something that didn’t have a good layout/floor plan to begin with

Not a restoration as some commenters mention. Gut and renovate which is what it was and that is fine. It doesn't retain any of the original charm and character of the original house, which is also fine. That could definitely have been accomplished, but, it is now a livable space, sitting on a decent amount of property. I have two houses built in 1883 and 1939 and both retain many original features, original lath and plaster, wavy glass and tin ceilings in the 1883, etc. All that has really changed is that the exteriors of both have been vinyl sided, so every day I experience the character and craftsmanship of the interiors of both houses. That is what makes me happy. This house has been transformed into a comfortable, livable space which is what makes the owner happy. You would never guess, from looking at the interior, that this is an old house. I subscribed and watched the owner's channel until it became apparent that it was a renovation, not a restoration, and then unsubscribed and moved on. I may revisit that channel to see if any of the original charm of the exterior has survived.
Cool to see the condensed video, I watched the the series. 👍 fun renovation that came out really nice. How about one more later of the outside when the landscaping is done and the plants re established? You also mentioned additions, I would humbly suggest putting the large porch back, it was in sad shape but it was clearly a big part of the original construction and a nice place to hang out.
Much of the original cabin is gone. Reminds me of a story of the man who inherited his great grandfather’s hatchet. His grandfather replaced the worn handle and his father replaced the head…. The cabin is no longer 100 years old. Nearly all is replaced. I would have tried to preserve as much as possible of the original even if it looked old and flawed.

An incredible effort to bring this near dilapidated building to life. And I’m sure there is well deserved pride on the part of those who did the work to make this house so beautiful and livable. But I’m wondering, since so much of the house, especially the basic structure, had to be carefully removed and replaced, what was the cost and how would that compare to demolition and new construction?
Um, excuse me but at the 21:40 minute mark. You were wrong. It wasn't Drainage pipes they put in but a power line! Actually, I watched from start this cabin renovation on 99 projects channel! Very, cool when a man, basically tackles a project like this by mostly himself. For many months! Love it!!!!
To the guy that said tear it down. That's why this was not your project. What fun in doing this job. Looks like it took about a year. Was not cheap to do. Like that new concrete mixer by the way. Will give u praise on this job. Would like to see the final job. Looks like it's New England area. Looks good job well done.😊
Now that is a beautiful transformation. I'm glad you didn't paint the T&G lining board. For me the only thing that ruined the look was the dark stain on the upper floor. I would have covered it with the same floating floor as downstairs and it would have been a good match.
Reminds me of what my old man said about tools: "you know, a good Hammer will last forever. So long as you just replace the head and the handle every once in a while."

Agree. Don’t see how this was worthwhile. Building it completely new would have been easier and resulted in a much better final product.
He has a TH-cam channel and explains why in his series

It would have been cheaper and more practical to pull it down and build a new house.

I was thinking that too.
I used to help my uncle renovate older houses. Most times in the middle of the job. We all would say. Let's just take it to the ground and start over.
My thoughts exactly!
By NOT tearing down the cabin, where he is located, they were able to bypass some of the regulations for "new construction"

This was a joy to watch... Thank you!
If they tore down all bits of the house and replaced them with new parts, can it still be called the same house?
The House of Theseus
Yes as long as you keep everything the same not changing anything you can use the original blueprint to make a complete new home @@MavelDraconia
No! It is a NEW house. 😃
@@ceasarandrepont1243 All good I was just saying it can be done go get the original blueprints and make the same old house just new
@@chno_144 Yes, that could be a great idea but if they could have the original blue prints or recreate the original floor plan.
The happy music helped reassure me that the video doesn't end with the whole house collapsing on the workers.
So beautiful ❤❤
Any old house of that era in particular has to have a Porch!….a BIG PORCH!!! That’s the Best part of the house!!!
FANTÁSTICO VOCÊ SÃO GÊNIOS! 😮😊😅❤❤❤❤❤
I do NOT AGREE with cutting in half 100 year old Dimensional Lumber!
Could get more money from careful thought removal…
The dog is helping a lot 😂🎉❤
Interior demaciado madera!
Nice job on the renovation!!! A pet peeve of mine is not installing enough outlets on every wall. I noticed you had plenty!!!!! NICE!!!!!
That Dog will be perfectly capable of building a house himself!!!
Creo hacerla nueva habría costado menos.
He didn’t renovate, he rebuilt it from scratch. All new!
Beautiful job you've done rebirthing the house ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really admire your talented hands
Those front stairs were a joke right?
Now when the Ghosts come back from vacation they're not going to recognize it. Amazing, good to have friends.👍
Here I am thinking this thing is out in the mountains in the middle of nowhere… only to get to the end and see its 50’ off the highway lol😂
