- Join us for this stunning @99Projects ' cabin!
The renovation of this shattered cottage was not only a thorough and meticulous effort to transform a dilapidated building into a renewed, functional and structurally sound space, but honors both its historic roots and the need for contemporary resilience.
From the foundation to clearing the driveway, each phase of the restoration required careful planning, technical skill and a commitment to respecting the original structure while enhancing its durability and utility.
And 99 projects knows how to tame the wild side of the forest.

Very nice! I wish you guys would have shown the outside as well. Food for thought for the next video. Thanks Quantum for another good video 🤠
hello
Ha ha, exactly !
Nice to see your 4-legged building inspector checking the progress.

Got to love them, they are the best.
👍👍👍👍 Just put a new engineered pier and beam foundation, dug out crawl space by hand, new electric, plumbing, subfloor / floors, Windows, HVAC, much more in an 1891 house. By myself........ and I just turned 65. I love that you preserved as much as you could and stuck with the original theme with some modern conveniences. Thta's the fun part!
By NOT tearing down the cabin, where he is located, they were able to bypass some of the regulations for "new construction"
Interesting video. My sister was a building inspector. She said this owner still would have to get permits for the restoration. That would include the structural restoration, which the owner had to get approval for by the municipalities Engineers, and permits for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, etc.. He also may have had to abate (meaning remove) the old septic system( which requires its own permit) and either install a new one or hook up to municipal sewer system. All, not some, must be inspected before the next stage could ever start. If this restore was in the Western United States, he would have had to completely remove the old foundation and pour a new one. Earth quakes are common there. They also happen in the Southern States and Eastern seaboard but not as often. This means seismic reinforcement is not a big priority. Looks like the owner is going to get a lovely home in the end. Congrats.

Some places consider only keeping one original wall as a “renovation”. He must have truly wanted to restore this house for some reason.
The house I bought is located beside a brook. If I were to tear it down new environmental regulations would prevent me from building on the property. So I did a renovation much like this one, including all the structural replacement.
This is horrible 😢 You turned an old building into a crap modern cabin.
From a retired carpenter, I can watches these home renovation videos all day long.
This house is about a quarter mile from where I live and I drive by it all the time always wondering what would become of it. I had no idea the amount of work you were doing to the inside because the outside barely changed. What a fantastic job you guys did on this place! I was always hoping someone would restore it, and you have done an outstanding job. Thank you!
Just wondering. What state is this in?
Building inspector in my state/area would shut this down

Absolutely love how they did all that meticulous work with wood and then installed Home Depot counter tops. Absolutely nailed it, fellas!
I love how they made every inch of every wall and ceiling in the house the exact same type, color, and pattern of unfinished wood and then didn't even bother to stain anything. Looks like they're living inside a giant packing crate.
All that effort for... that? Each to their own, I guess.

It is no longer a 100 year old house.
Anyone here old enough to remember the first episode of "This Old House"? This is exactly what Bob and Norm did!😊

Yessir I remember Bob getting into those jobs! I really enjoyed those shows!
I used to help my uncle renovate older houses. Most times in the middle of the job. We all would say. Let's just take it to the ground and start over.
My thoughts exactly!
Did you ever learn to hold that thought and apply it on day 1, on the next job?
Been there lol
No, man. You don't tear down the irreplaceable! That place is laid out exactly like the farmhouse I call home. Exactly!super wonderful work!
I was thinking that too.
Love seeing these old houses rebuilt and restored to their former beauty. With a touch of modernization. Perfect. !
Well done, young men.
Man just tear the whole place down and start new lol
Yep. Wasting all that money and time.
You took my comment.
I love it
Agree. Don’t see how this was worthwhile. Building it completely new would have been easier and resulted in a much better final product.
He has a TH-cam channel and explains why in his series
You all make this look SO inspirational! I’m a mother in the Midwest and this is definitely becoming my new favorite channel to watch! My only experience with home repair is the tv show “Home Improvement.”
My dad did some house repairs, but nothing to this extent.
Love watching people who know what they are doing! Great job!
That dang beam is sitting on a 2 by 4 nailed to the exterior wall with 4 freaking nails hahaha. Good job lol
When viewing these old home renovations, I'm always fascinated to see the rough-cut lumber used for studs and beams because they weren't dimensional. I bet that not one stud or stick in that house had the same dimensions. It's remarkable they were ever able to get a square corner. The other point is how well preserved the wood is. If it didn't need to be recut to standard dimensions, you could easily reuse it. Wood: nature's wonder material.
Its oak timbers too, so they use kiln dried pine type woods in its place.
My 1925 house has 2x4 exactly studs. They did it. And yes, corners are square.
@@heatherk8931 That's great, but your house is approximately 20-25 years younger than the one in the video. That's quite awhile. I've seen enough of these types of videos to gather that dimensional lumber was either uncommon or non--existent around the turn of the last century. I imagine that availability of dimensional lumber was also heavily influenced by the market where the home was built. I'm curious, did you have the walls open at some point? And if so, are you sure it was the original framing? At that time, balloon framing was the norm. That's one way to tell if the framing was original.
I would add these guys really show What's possible with extremely hard work.
I had watched the 99Projects videos for the past year, watching the renovation over the months.Hello to dear Max, the dog!
I don’t if everyone can fully appreciate what it took to do this. Amazing work and transformation!
Cool watching a video like this where its obvious the guys know what they're doing and take pride in craftsmanship.

Wonder what the comparison time/cost of bulldozing and starting over would've been.
Definitely would’ve been cheaper, but they didn’t want to tear down that whole thing
Yes, my thoughts too. I like the chill 70's music though.
In most of the world, I believe that removing the old house and building a new one would make more sense, unless time is not an issue, and labor cost means nothing to this guy.
I follow him on TH-cam he built it in a matter of months
A lot
Very impressed with the skill of these young men. Darn good at what they do.
Why the clickbait thumbnail? That is not the house being renovated in this video.
This is not renovation. This is reconstruction .
That's not a renovation, lmao. That's a demolition.

Bolstering isn’t very nice.

E tutto marcio.
My Dad did a similar project back in the late seventies. brings back a lot of memories of having our meals in our motorhome for the winter!
Aynı şeyi düşünüyorum
Exactly my opinion.

Thank you for sharing this journey! It’s truly inspiring for anyone dreaming of taking on a restoration project themselves. Whether it’s preserving an old craftsman’s charm or bringing back the glory of a Victorian, seeing it all come together is a beautiful reminder of why we value these homes so much. Thanks!
Sometime you save an old house because it has good bones, not the case here! Although great job restoring👍
Once I saw that the flooring had to be completely ripped out and rebuilt, my mind said "restoration no longer a smart option. Bulldoze and start again!"
This was a joy to watch... Thank you!
I've seen that cement mixer before in other vlogs. This is a job where I feel that something of this expense would shine. I couldn't see having something like that for doing a garage floor pour. Awesome video!
Impressive workmanship and such. It seems to be a project of much love to spend so much time and energy to bring it up to modern standards.

That dark flooring I know is a personal choice, I'd have put light flooring in as the dark will get dirty too fast and require too much cleaning.
I did build 2 new houses and remodeled 3 old ones in USA. Remodeling is always cheaper. You do not have to pay for old house removal, you have ready foundation, walls, roof. My last project was to change 3 chicken coops into a house. I invested $20K and result is wonderful.600 sq feet little guest house. For $20K you can not build today a basement. Within 2 years I got my money back from renters.

100 yrs means this house was around right after world war 1.
Tbh, for a wooden house, to what I assume to be abandoned for decades, it actually stood up fairly well to the test of time.
The one thing that looks odd to me in the finished shots, is the lack of a hearth or mantle on the fireplace. Adding those would make it much more attractive and usable. Great job renovating this house!
The kitchen layout is really odd too. No windows. The dishwasher door is right up against the wall.
I agree. I think all the timber inside/colour choice looks really ugly and oppressive. The kitchen is weirdly laid out too
Beautiful workmanship, high skills with the excavating machines. There was a lot of rotten wood, and the demolition, especially of the floors, looked dangerous to the guys. Tearing the cabin down and rebuilding would have been safer and less restrictive regarding design, but the owners must have had nostalgia for the old structure. A lot of hard, skillful work. Congratulations.
Loving the sound track! Great work. House looks awesome.
Love old houses they stand longer than the new ones, and they bring joy to you like the seasons do.
Bingo, they only had to do minimal repairs of the original stone and mortar foundation. Built to last.
It's a shame that the art of brick making has become forgotten in America. Fire proof, rot proof, guaranteed to withstand the test of time.
It would have been cheaper and more practical to pull it down and build a new house.
Problem with that is that in many locations it requires new building permits and those can be almost impossible to fulfill. You can circumvent that calling it a renovation
@@drbichat5229 This is true. In my town as long as you leave ONE wall up you can call it a renovation
Yes but it wouldn't be 100 years old. A piece of history!
That’s a typical response from someone lazy
Now he’s got a historical home unlike all he manufactured junk everyone else has
@@TriciaBooth Hello Tricia, most municipalities require a permit to tear down a structure. Many municipalities will put the new owner through holy hell to build from scratch once the old building is completely removed. That is why they typically but not always have a loophole in that requirement. That is that at least one wall of the original dwelling must remain. Some cities or counties require 50% of the old home must remain. If leaving part of the structure is taken than a renovation is the way to go. This is what this video appears to be demonstrating. Also, the old structure may allow a person to get property tax breaks if the house is old enough and historical. You could not get that advantage if it was torn down. Property taxes can be very steep depending on the state you live in so mitigating them, if possible, is the wisest option. Be well.
Wow what a transformation. Well done.

Great work.. even though tearing it down and building something new would’ve been cheaper, they did achieve their goal in preserving as much of the original structure as possible.. as long as they are happy with the outcome that’s most important.. personally, it’s a lot of work done preserving something that didn’t have a good layout/floor plan to begin with

That’s a lot of work. And you did a great job. 👍
Seriously... Practically nothing was left of the original structure... I'm not really sure what they were trying to "preserve".
I still don't understand what's left of a century-old house? A couple of stone walls in the basement and exterior cladding?

The craftsmanship and you guys were able to restore it and save some of a beauty,an I enjoy 😮the way you poured the concrete that to me😊 was ingenious.
Not a restoration as some commenters mention. Gut and renovate which is what it was and that is fine. It doesn't retain any of the original charm and character of the original house, which is also fine. That could definitely have been accomplished, but, it is now a livable space, sitting on a decent amount of property. I have two houses built in 1883 and 1939 and both retain many original features, original lath and plaster, wavy glass and tin ceilings in the 1883, etc. All that has really changed is that the exteriors of both have been vinyl sided, so every day I experience the character and craftsmanship of the interiors of both houses. That is what makes me happy. This house has been transformed into a comfortable, livable space which is what makes the owner happy. You would never guess, from looking at the interior, that this is an old house. I subscribed and watched the owner's channel until it became apparent that it was a renovation, not a restoration, and then unsubscribed and moved on. I may revisit that channel to see if any of the original charm of the exterior has survived.
That plaster was to bad to save. I like what they did. I also owned a 1875 home and restored it. I left all the charm.
"visible signs of decay and neglect". The understatement of the year.
I have to wonder if it would not have been better, more cost effective, and time-wise, to raze it to the ground and start anew? With SO much that had to be replaced...
