I know nothing about roofing or laying hips but the extra effort you go through to ensure that the job is a good one, but also aesthetically pleasing is refreshing to see. The devil is in the detail & it’s the finishing touches that make the job. You are a credit to your industry. Wish you all the success you deserve. Nice one.
Good job, but to keep a straight line all you have to do. Is place a ridge tile at the top and one at the bottom eye them up make a mark top and bottom then strike a line. Still every one to their own
I'm an ex roofer, leadman for the last 20 years, I know an old boy who cuts his to ridge on the deck never on the roof and every time it's bang on, asked him a few times how he does it he just winks at me and smiles. Shame he's retiring soon best roofer I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Top job by the way 👏 👌
Hi Will av been a roofer from Scotland for 44 years the old guys a worked with would be proud off you ..am the old guy now ..nice to see A roofer taking pride in his work ...great trowel work too .A no wet hip systems are a thing ov the past ..great to see it done properly .great for the new generation off roofers to see .great guy .a real Roofer .Tam .Ayrshire .. 31:
Something about these guys which make it so incredibly easy to understand but at the same time entertaining and very instructional. A lot of this stuff you only learn on site and this is providing people with a real good depth of knowledge! Keep it up guys! Awesome! Thanks, Marc
Will do mate.... loving the channel and all the great things that you do on it. I work on council properties all day week in week out... very repetitive and same old stuff in every place,so it’s amazing to see what can be done. Need to up my game onto bigger things for sure after watching your channel! 👌👍
A real pleasure to see these professional roofers do such a great job explaining clearly what they are doing and taking pride in their work. .Will be saving this video to watch again when I reroof my Cape Dutch gabled house in South Africa.
Good call mate, I’m a plumber in Australia and theirs a real class system when it comes to trades. Roof tilers are known to be pretty rough when it comes to quality and skill. This fella is a absolute pro and great example of a master tradesmen. A&E are a class above. 👍
Nice neat job guys. We always use a t&g board as a guide. Just sit your side of the ridge on the tonge and then remove the board when you have bedded the last 1 then point up.
I specialise in knowledge management and these type of videos are so good for sharing knowledge with others however there is a lot of preparation behind the scenes and some people feel more comfortable than others teaching in this way. I think anyone who works with you has their future assured if they choose to listen. Keep up the good work and sharing your knowledge. Cheers and GOD BLESS.
Hope you know how good this is guys, tutoring like this is a real talent. I’m a diy dude and need to carry out a minor repair, this has everything I need to know. Cheers.
I like your character that comes across in the way you work and attention to detail...... The customer can rest assured they are getting a quality job...
Another professional quality job. Work to be proud of your attention to detail is second to none. All too easy to have an it’ll do attitude especially when it’s on a roof. Thanks for taking the time the film. Keep up the great work. All the best Pete 👍👍
Been a roofer for 16 years so this is nothing new.....but was great to watch and very well explained......its crazy how many people do a messy job for a quick quid iv put a few "bodge it and scarper" jobs right🤣🤣 nice to see you taking pride in your work👍👍
just started to do one on garage, did it all wrong then came watch your video, dude you saved me the ball ache of being slow. copied your way and mate you saved my back :) amazing video keep it up
Thanks. This has given me the confidence to relay some ridge tiles that have become dislodged during storm Arwen. Quality tutorial from a true craftsman !
So grateful that you are taking the time to post these videos. Your years of experience show in the way you make what is a technical procedure look quite easy. Obviously that’s not the case. Thank you so much. Looking forward to more roofing videos.
I'm a landscaper and currently building my own workshop, not being a roofer it was this job thats going to be the hardest part for me but finding and watching this video helped me massively understand the proper way hips are tackled, its a real credit to you and your skill set! Thanks again!
Its so nice to see a hip/ridge joint that isn't kicked up, and this video shows that can be done properly with skill and attention to detail. Great job boys and stay safe up there. Cheers.
beautifully done ! used to do a lot of plastering and was extremely fast and neat ...Manager used to tell me '' you dont do plastering for money - you do it for fun !'' same as this guy here --its obvious he loves what he does !
Just about to do our hipped dormer, ran out of summer and the local guys can’t do it until November so I’m tackling it myself - thank you so much for these videos, you’ve made this really straightforward!
My first time roof diy on garage. 4 ridge tiles replaced using your skills, learnt a lot and simply explained. Bit scary first time on a roof. Thank you.
This was a bit long video but well worth it. I am attempting to do my tile roof ridge, you covered everything and made it look easy enough to try. I really love the attention to detail. Thank you!
I'm just about to have some ridge work done. To be able to see this not only helps me see the process but fully appreciate the skill involved - and why the cost is what it is. Brilliant video and your teaching skills are excellent (I'm involved in learning). Thank you
That piece of "scrap" tile really is a brilliant idea before adding more mortar. It not on add as a support but provide more reinforcement as well. Fantastic workmanship, keep up the good job mate!
Just watched your lLemington Spa renovation series over three nights... absolutely fantastic and gorgeous work done by you and your tradesmen. Cracking job with step by step instructions to use myself . Definitely thumbs up.
Watching this video as I accidently broke the hip ridge taking a bit of facia and soffit off haha think I'm well prepared now only 2 to lay what can go wrong. Great video
Great job! AN old school tip for you is to use a T&G floor board instead of the Scaf Plank and lay the hip on the tongue that way it will keep your hip straight and also set the height of one side of the hip
Hey Will, you and Ricky fancy enjoying some Aussie sunshine? If so, I have a job for you two! Amazing work, true artisanship and a joy to watch spmeone produce something they take pride in and is prepared to put their name to.
Fantastic job. You're an artist in my eyes. I had idiots do my hip ridges and when I pointed it out to them how messy it looked they just couldn't see it! I witheld money from the total amount payable but would've rather paid full amount for a proper job!
Fantastic job and clearly explained at every stage. If I could find such a conscientious roofer I wouldn't bother learing how to do it myself. Hope you get paid above the average rate because it's well above the average standard of work. Pleasure to watch and thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge.
I'm not a roofer but a plasterer I do a lot of work for roofers in particular rives as I am good a t leveling and sand and cement but it amazes me how many tell me I'm being to picky great to see I'm right ther rong lol Great work 🤜🤜🤜
The recent storm we had appears to have blown off two of my ridge tiles I have someone coming next week to replace them annoying thing is my roof tiles are black and I am worried with the bad weather due rain will get into the roof. I am watching these videos to see if thats the case that rain will get in.
I used a length of tongue and groove one side, place the ridges along the tongue side, bed of mortar nice and high just inside the timber, then bed them on,point up when set after few hrs after removing wood job done, straight and level
I’ve not seen it done like that before with a scaffolding board secured to the scaffolding. Always interesting to see how others do it. I use a ridge runner which is adjustable to accommodate any type of ridge and supports your muck on both sides of the hip. It also is self supporting and just sits on the hip without any need to brace it. We tend to use remix if doing muck work as it knocks up a lovely drop of gear and it’s consistent every time without need for febmix. Having said all this, we rarely even do muck work on roofs these days unless they are repairs or on very old buildings. It’s usually dry ridge system, which is designed for ventilation and the mechanical fixings provide a much more permanent solution and never a need to worry about cracking muck work. And apart from anything else it’s ten times as quick. Still have to point tour starter and your mitres but it’s lot easier screwing a ridge down than it is to bed it on muck. One thing I will say though is the dry ridge system is not great on deep profile tiles like mendips or pantiles but work a treat with plain tiles slates and stonewolds. I’m guessing you do all your perimeters in muck work. Again, valleys and gables in dry systems are super quick and look pretty too. I wonder if u use segmental ridge all over or do u use 1/3 round on the hips to avoid that top ridge swinging up where it meets the mitre? I like the fact that u keep your tile cuts central to the hip and so avoid muck spilling into the roof void. The amateur wouldn’t appreciate that would cause water ingress. They think that so long as it’s under the ridge tile that it doesn’t matter but I’ve seen the hip rafter start to rot out due to muck having spilt into the central void. I’ve often wondered what that fake muck is like. That stuff you buy in premixed bags. Really weird gruff. It looks like plasticine and is supposed to be completely waterproof and permanent. I’d love to try it but it’s well expensive. Well u bedded a nice tidy hip. I didn’t see the mitre but I’m guessing u got that looking good too. I’ll come and do some work with u if u fancy it and exchange ideas and techniques. I have no labourers at present so I’m finding it hard working alone. Roofing is. Or a one man job, eh? Good work fellas.
I know nothing about roofing or laying hips but the extra effort you go through to ensure that the job is a good one, but also aesthetically pleasing is refreshing to see. The devil is in the detail & it’s the finishing touches that make the job.

Yeah defo I would love to get off the tools and get a teaching job as my back is proper fucked
Good job, but to keep a straight line all you have to do. Is place a ridge tile at the top and one at the bottom eye them up make a mark top and bottom then strike a line. Still every one to their own
Will, what a craftsman you are - an apprenticeship school/college needs the like of you just as Matthew said, first class workmanship....
totally agree.. spot on work..

I do small ridge and hip repairs in my property maintenance work and the reason I feel more confident is watching Will’s videos.

Very good video, the camera work was great.
Your good man.
Worked with a fella who would lay each ridge one by one using only a chalk line and they were mint.
Wish I had watched a bit closer.
Will's like Michelin star chef with his trowel and those hips and rigs are five stars.
Roofing is hard. Proper skill and experience required. Top job. Saying it from trying it myself diy.
beautiful work guys
I used a length of tongue and groove one side, place the ridges along the tongue side, bed of mortar nice and high just inside the timber, then bed them on,point up when set after few hrs after removing wood job done, straight and level
I do it the same way but with a length of skirting board
Definitely the way to do it using a hip board a length of tongue and groove is how I was taught nice and straight and level
I do this day in, day out and yet this is great to watch.
