My Senegal is 30 years old. He eats everything, when we first got him and let him join us for dinner he ate lamb chops and salmon. He loves everybody but me. He attacks me, and bites me. I take him out of his cage with an 8 foot wooden dowel stick. I still love him.
This has honestly helped me a lot, I’ve put in about a year or so of thought and research into parrots and finding the right parrot for me. I’ve been heavily leaning towards a Senegal Parrot but have been struggling to find this kind of detailed personal experience!
I would love to see more education and experience from you! Please keep up the amazing work you do!
Side note: I’ve researched enough to know this isn’t the time for me to get a parrot, I’m waiting for the right moment and the right bird! I’m falling in love with Senegal’s! On the right day I will be happy to find the bird for me! (:

I met a Senegal today and was surprised to see they have the playfulness of a conure but are quiet and less nippy! This is making me seriously consider them as I have an apt and really missing having parrots.

I went to a Senegal rescue to get to know them but they had a Quaker who got surrendered. We fell in love with him and we adopted him and after 4 months to get to know each other he is such a sweetheart. I handled a Senegal and it was so sweet. ❤

I recently inherited my mom's Senegal parrot Chansu. He's 26 years old and an absolute joy.
My sennie, Griffin, is fifteen now! I've had him since he was six months old. He's a moody, affectionate, hilarious little clown and I love him to pieces ❤️ Love this video and thank you for being a responsible owner!

How long do you recommend to let them settle before you start working with them properly? He’s super friendly, out of cage daily and interacts with everyone, just haven’t started formal training/altered routine etc.

Hey! I've heard that peanuts can carry a fungus that can be life threatening to birds, but walnuts are a great alternative! Also, walnuts are very healthy for them! Just what to keep the baby safe! ❤️
I’ve heard of that as well but never actually seen proof. It’s hard to say sometimes. Your hands can be life threatening as well, all it takes is some dirty hands 🖐 🤔 I give him raw almonds, walnuts, macadamia, and Brazilian nuts or fruits 🍉 for most of his training treats but rarely entire ones got to keep him motivated with the good good haha 🥜 🙌🏽
It's called aspergillus flavus and it's present in other food like dried grains (rice, corn, wheat) and ground nuts like walnuts and hazelnuts. When it reproduces it creates a mycotoxin called aflatoxin which is not just dangerous for birds, but humans too. It's carcinogenic causes liver damage, and can cause fungal infections in their air sacs/lungs. We probably don't see a lot of it in the west because countries where peanuts are grown, like the USA, monitors peanuts and other food stuffs for the toxin and sets limits on how much can be in food meant for human consumption. I have an Amazon that has it in his air sacs ...

People say Senegals are quiet for parrots, but they are still extremely loud. When my family and I lived in an apartment, we had a Senegal named Nosy, who was cute, smart, and talked a lot, but when I tried to sleep, Nosy started screaming so much I couldn’t sleep at all! We had to give him away to another family because of this. Still better than the two Eclectus we had before then…
What was wrong with the eclectus? Curious as I’m leaning on getting this breed
@@katsy3333 It was only that particular Eclectus. Not the species as a whole. Each Eclectus is different.

Depends on what qualities you want in a parrot I.e some species tend to be less chatty and noisy * disclaimer all parrots are loud haha some tend to be more consistent than others. Also take into account space/cage size, toys, monthly costs etc. I’m biased toward a Senegal it worked for me as a more apartment friendly species :) 🖖🏽 Hope this helps!
4:06 exactly my bird! he's very loud in the mornings though... if he's in the cage and he sees the sun,, he screams, like your years would explode with blood, my neighbors hear this... my only excuse for now is their kids scream and drop things on my ceiling too

Great video, I just adopted a 10 year old male Senegal Parrot named Senegan. I am his third owner. The second owner had to let him go after two years since she was working too much and could no longer give him the attention he deserves. The first owner had him for 8 years but when finally getting married his wife was not onboard. I was really scared that he might have some sort of deep rooted psychological problems but he is amazing! On day one He climbed on me, my wife and son, and either of us could pet him! For the moment he is pretty scared of everything new and only likes being either in his cage or on our shoulders. I cannot place him anywhere else. He's just scared. He is also annoyed by my two budgies who fly freely so I placed him in my office. My male budgy always wants to challenge him while the female just wants to hang! Senegan has been very tolerant but it's better I separate them since Senegan can easily snap the budgies neck if he wanted. One of my buddies also has two Senegal Parrots and I look forward to watching the rest of your videos. My bird has his wings clipped and loves it outside but I have to be mindful of the falcons where I live.

Hey there! I would say about 2 months every bird will be different so there is no exact time, I noticed once I established a consistent routine and he knew I wasn't going to leave him + ignoring the contact calls it started phasing out. At the same time I improved his diet and sleep routine so I'm sure that helped :)

I have had mine for 3 years now. Past owner he used to bite now he don’t and he eating the right sort of food now. He had been treat not so good by a man so he wasn’t trusting me at all. He still getting there I can just about touch his head on the top. But picking him body wise up he fine with now

Yes and yes! Just make sure you know what each species of bird is like and that you can give proper attention and care :)
What is Elfie’s routine? I’ve heard parrots like to follow routines. Is he aggressive with other birds? How do you handle a bite when it happens? Have you ever accidentally dropped him?
Hi Jade, 1) Elfie is a very laid back bird lol sometimes I forget he's in the room with me because he's so quite. Usually his day starts at 8 am with poop training lol once he goes poop he gets a treat then give him breakfast after some wave/whistle/spin/kiss tricks for fun. Then he decides to nap for about 2-3 hrs (food coma lol) then he'll hang out an play until about 4 pm which he then begins to chirp to let me know he's hungy. From there we do some trick training/flight training etc 15-20 mins. Go for a walk with his harness on, then he gets dinner. We hang out until 6-7 pm and play then its sleep time. This is on weekdays. 2) Elfie prefers humans and doesn't care for other birds. 3) He generally doesn't bite people because I make strangers give him treats/positive reinforcement and try to socialize him as much as possible. The way to handle a bite is to learn why it happened and not trigger him to bite in the future this way he has no desire to bite later. 4) I have accidentally dropped him before but it's because he was spooked but he flutters and lands on the soft carpet and softens his fall. This is why I flight train him so he can learn to fly to safety if he gets scared and not injure himself. Hopes this helps :)

I have a senegal parrot, that I named Mango. No idea the gender, but I consider Mango a male. I'm not sure on the age (does DNA test approximate that?). I got him free from a coworker, who in turn got him from an acquaintance, of which they kept him in the basement with hardly any sunlight or interaction. When I first got him, he was incredibly loud, but after 1.5 years (April 2019), he's doing much better. He still had loud periods (hormones?), but for the most part, he's fairly quiet...unless he wants attention, or if the back door opens and I leave to walk the dogs, he will squawk really loud. I don't think Senegal Parrots are good for apartment dwellers or around other neighbors who may question or bring up to your HOA/Landlord without their knowledge.
In the end, I love my senegal parrot. Does yours say anything? Mine squawks, whistles, and does this muffled noise that almost sounds like he's trying to say something (usually when the TV is on), it sounds like the EMF/Radio static. He also knows how to step up from the beginning and likes to dip his crunchy food in water and then eating it that way; other than that, not much in terms of other tricks or habits.
My Senegal doesn’t speak much just different whistles and chirps and clicks haha
But he is a good bird and very quiet, more than the dogs around where I live haha
hi currently i keep love birds in a big bird room and im thinking about getting a pair senegal parot too so i want to ask how loud or noisy they are? For me if a parot is loud is not a problem i love parrots but i dont want to case problem for my neighbor.
Parrots have their loud screaming episodes usually no more than 5 mins at a time but then again there are exceptions (Cockatoos haha) check out the video on The Best Starter Bird on the channel. Overall plan for your parrots to be loud, also when you get a pair you will have to train them separately and there is always a possibility they will bond with each other one day and want nothing to do with you or other humans. If you have the time commitment to work with one parrot and give plenty of quality time I recommend you start there. :)
How i wish to have a senegal parrot. But your video helped me to realized that working a full time away from home is not healthy to build a good relationship with our pet. Sigh :(

I have a older Senegal parrot been trying different things to bond with him he likes females/lady’s not men. He as had 2 other owners they not done nothing with him n as been biting them. So going to try this way see if he settle down abit

Mine still got the fearful behaviour going to try target training. He kk wen he out he let me get near him but soon as I put my hand near him he goes away. He as apple for breakfast then nuts n fruit for his tea. I got a clicker coming. Had him for 7 months now. But I can handle him while he in the bath but that’s the only place I can handle him. He likes watching ur vids but try’s to bite my phone 😂
Lol! Might help not feeding him fruits and nuts as daily meals more as treats so he has motivation to come to you :)
@@parrotsco.3224 Yh I don’t feed him if I want to train him I offer sunflower seed as a treat as that’s getting my hand near him as gets used to it. if he does the right thing. Hoping he gets the idea that he gets 1 if he does that then hold on if I don’t do that I don’t get one. He started to bite it he just lets me touch then treat with a click B4 the treat. Working progress will take time. Not my first time handling birds just my first time owning one
I have had a senegal for many more years and as a rescue parrot I need to be honest it really doesn't matter this is a very bitty type. that is normal. Your are right that you dont ever hit the beard just slowly pull their beak off slowly and never hit them. Really to have a parrot is you will get it. They are still wild animals and if you are not ready to be bit or give four hours to hang out with them please don't get pne.

Do you mean flip out when they’re hormonal? Never heard the term but I will say all parrots 🦜 can have a tendency to act “different” lol around mating season usually in the spring. I.e regurgitating on you, being defensive around their cage, or hunting things haha it will depend on the bird. The best thing to do is to not enable them to keep doing it or encouraging the behavior. Not encouraging he behavior tends to make it go away on its own (way faster).

Yeah so when birds are young they tend to be cuddly then they mature and might tend to have a changes in behavior/personality but if you raise/tame/train them properly you can still work with them. The benefit of getting and adult bird is that what you see is what you get haha 🤣 Great question though!

Haha! True I would actually never put a parrot on my shoulder that isn’t tame or I don’t trust. Shoulders or for nice birds, the naughty ones stay on their perch. (I use shouldering as a reward/fun experience).
