  • Wild Senegal parrots (Poicephalus senegalus) have never been filmed to such an extent in their natural habitat until this video. You can see them here, probably for the first time! Observe their feeding and breeding behaviour!
    Audio and video recorded on site in The Gambia, West Africa, by Florin Feneru and Monica Crugel.
    Big thanks for Musa Manneh, official birdwatching guide who made this possible!

    Thanks to Gerrit Heij and Marc Eeckhaut from the Facebook group ‘Gambia and Senegal Birding’ for allowing me to use their photos of a colour mutation Senegal parrot.

    Thank you for this video and the other one of just sounds. I adopted a 35 year old Senegal who from his band was possibly wild caught. He had not been out of his cage in at least 12 years, and his cage was only 20 x 18 x 20. I brought him home and had a new cage set up for him but even after leaving his old cage open for 8 hours, he would not come out (understandable - so much change for the old fellow!). Several people suggested I just let him be in the old cage and set it next to the new one for a while, but somehow I really wanted him to know right away that life would be different for him with me. While I was sitting with him, I was doing more research on Senegals and came upon your video, which I was just playing on my phone. He went BONKERS when he heard it, came right out of his cage and much to my surprise, he FLEW. He actually got HIMSELF into the new cage (I didn't try to handle him - don't know if he ever has been) and now he has out of cage time every day. Thank you for posting this. At this point I'm not sure if I should keep playing it - his reaction was very dramatic - not sure if it would enrich him or stress him out (his health is not the best). Thoughts?

    This video was so fascinating and beautiful!! It was so much fun to watch Senegals doing Senegal things, just like mine does. Our parrots are still wild, after all. Mine flys around my apartment and can get flight since I have tall ceilings. But he's sort of like a helicopter. I guess their bodies aren't very aerodynamic.

    Senegal colors are so interesting because they have bright colors yet blend into the environment so well. Question if you know, what are the predators they fear, birds snakes?Thanks.

    • @DiscoverPARROTS
      @DiscoverPARROTS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking. I don't know exact details, but hawks and falcons should be the main predators of adult Senegals. One such predator I've seen repeatedly in The Gambia is shikra (Accipiter badius), just like the sparrowhawk (A. nisus) here in Britain is a threat to parakeets. In the nest, snakes are a threat, but probably birds too. They have 6 species of starling so I expect there are some conflicts at the nesting holes. Small mammals such as squirrels also can eat eggs and chicks.

    • @DiscoverPARROTS
      @DiscoverPARROTS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started with budgies when I was a boy, and they are still my favourite bird. I used to give them millet and canary seed as staple food, and oats as treats. Oats have the advantage of being longer seeds, which you can hold with two fingers. The clicker itself is not mandatory, you can train birds and mark the good behaviour saying 'good' or 'bravo', etc. You should consider giving treats their main food. You feed them two-three times a day seeds, the rest only lettuce, apple, carrot, etc. Seeds never left in the cage for more than 30 minutes. Before the meal, they will be eager to fly on command or do other tasks for their normal food (millet, canary seed). If they like sweet corn, give them that, but not too much, as they will get fat. Also, the smaller the seed, the more you actions you will get before they are full. Let me know how it works. Best wishes, Florin

    I've been watching your videos. I have a male and a female budgie. From pet store. Not hand tame. They are free to fly around outside their cage. I'd like to tame them. Hold them and touch them and put them on my shoulder. Also they've gnawed through their wooden perch is that good or bad behaviour?

    • @DiscoverPARROTS
      @DiscoverPARROTS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thank you for leaving the comment. Chewing is normal behaviour. You just replace the perch when it breaks. You can offer them clean, fresh branches for chewing. You can tame the budgies to come to your hand and sit on your shoulder, but budgerigars are not the kind of parrot to cuddle, to pet with your hands. With patience and offering food rewards you will achieve a lot. Good luck! Florin

    • @cathyt144
      @cathyt144 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      flyorra i would like to offer a suggestion on helping you tame your budgies. Try using millett sprays but only give to them when you are working with them. Most birds are crazy about it and it can be used as a reward. I too have purchased budgies and cockatiels that were just not friendly at all. Take your time ,be patient with them. Try to interact with them several times a day, in small sessions. Sit in a chair outside of their cage and talk softly to them, read a book out loud, basically allowing them to get accustomed to your voice and your presence. Birds are flock animals so you are going to have to earn their trust to become accepted into the flock.Marlene McCohen has a utube channel and she has great training info on her videos. Parrot Playhouse is another great channel with helpful info. Hope this helps.😀

    Parrots do know each other as individuals - it has been scientifically proven via a slightly dubious egg-swapping experiment that parrots' names are given to them in the nest and are not some kind of genetically-inherited instinctive noise. Having language and individual identifiers is interlinked with the ability to refer to individuals not present, which probably wouldn't evolve if parrots quickly forgot about friends (or enemies, or plain annoyances) that weren't immediately present.
