  • Hey Bird Gang! In this video we go over some tips to stop your parrot from screaming all day whether it's for attention, to get on your nerves, or to call you. I share with you how I reduced with Elfie the Senegal Parrot from screaming 80% of the day!
    Although, it's impossible to keep your parrot quiet 100% of the time (its what they do), we can reduce unwanted yelling big time!
    P.S. Parrots tend to be loud during sunrise and sunset (some things you can't avoid!).

    Another thing u can do that works for some screaming is to always tell your bird where you are going. I tell my bird I'm going upstairs and he knows that word and where I am. I tell him I'm going out now and he knows. I don't have to tell him where he can see me. If I forgot he usually panic yells and I will say I'm upstairs. They are very smart and will associate you word with where you are at. It works. They need to know where you are. You are their flock mate. They will settle down.

    As everyone else has said, you nailed it. Being in a studio apartment, working from home and having zoom meetings with work, they are not "happy campers" whenever they hear my Cockatiel "screech". Now even if they hear a wild bird outside, they make a comment. I had to admit that I was part of the problem, I spoiled "my precious" (say it like Gollum...). Tried your suggestions and I'm seeing improvement and my stress / anxiety is lowering also! Thanks!

    Screaming! I had a large white umbrella with a huge set of lungs. H liked to have a full on scream session about twice a day. The jack russell joined in with bassett type baying & the chihuahua filled in the soprano yelps. I regarded it as a celebration of life and was known to join in myself. Rarely did he embarrass me by screeching innappropriatey. The scream sesh would be accompanied with dancing up and down the perch with wing and crest displays. I think he was saying "life is great!"

    Sir I have been having 2 Alexandrine parrots for over 8 years now. They were with me since they were born and I love them a lot. Me and my mother had tolerated and made terms with the fact that they are gonna yell.
    Now, out of nowhere, I have developed misophonia ( certain sounds trigger and stress me ) and my parrots shouting for no reason is one of that. I have been trying your suggestions but it's not making a difference.
    My parrots also don't like to come out of their cage, but I will try to get them out tonight after work. I was crying today because I was so stressed out from the screaming because its been over 1.5 months since my misophonia and it's not even improved a bit.
    I feel very guilty when they shout and I constantly get thoughts that I'm not fulfilling their needs and stealing from them their right to fly in the wilderness. The problematic behaviour is not their's, but mine because their screaming did not stress me out for 8 years.
    I would really appreciate if someone can offer me any advice as I'm at my wit's end. The thought of having to part with my parrots hurts and hopefully I can come up with a solution.

Any tips to get him to eat the pellets please? Awesome video by the way

    Thanks for the video! We have 2 cockatiels at home, and we love them dearly. The young lady has started screaming an amount now that she has gotten comfortable at home... She literally wants 24/7 attention! Will take your tips to heart, though it's very hard to ignore her for 2-3 hours non-stop. Kinda impossible to Work From Home at times...
    I do have 1 question... We unfortunately don't have a room just for them, so we leave them in the kitchen. It's the most reasonable place for them to sleep, but I fear it's never 100% quiet for them since there's no door and it's near the bathroom. This could be a major factor why the girl screams. The boy is cute but quiet as a monk (apart from his lovely singing).

    I have had a sun conure for 10 years now. Everyone in the family gives him attention I even take naps with him and we give him cardboard boxes so he can play because he loves them. But recently he's been screaming for literally anything (if we are eating he screams, when we are in the sofa watching tv he screams etc.) My parrot is an outside of the cage bird he is never put inside because he hates it. If he is inside he wont stop screaming (keep in mind his cage is huge like 6 feet high). It is very frustrating because the screams are sooo loud and it hurts our ears. I tried to change his diet to fruits and vegetables and some sunflower seeds but he would not stop screaming because he wants only sunflowers and peanuts. It is strange to me that he is being more loud and aggressive for no reason he is starting to fly to my visitors and bites them. He started biting my sister when he was never aggressive with her. I don't know what to do anymore. Any tips?

    I finally transitioned my flock to BirdTricks pellets! All the way from my budgie to my Miligold macaw. Made a world of difference with my macaw he’s new to my flock only 3 weeks now. Severely underweight so skinny I have never seen a bird so skinny was on bread and sunflower seeds cage was bare just had a 3 inch long perch major atrophy broke my heart! But now he is gaining weight at a healthy rate! growing his feathers back from where he has been plucking. He has lost his weird not normal odor has the normal macaw smell which I love! The great thing is that I can feed the same size pellets to all my birds because it’s cold pressed! He’s a bit hormonal right now because of the new diet but it will calm down, the proper nutrition has certainly put him in to a hormonal state because he is getting what he needs but we work through it by trick training. His cage bound atrophy is going away! Diet is everything in birds!

      @FeatherLove thanks for the support! Sure can definitely explain in a video. I use a cat/animal nail clipper as Elfie doesn't let me hold his foot haha. He gets wrapped in a towel then on his back, my GF hold him and I ever so Carefully trim one nail at a time at the very tip. I recommend you take him to your local bird store and have them do it while you watch to get an idea of this. Ideally you want to be able to train our parrot to be held on its back and comfortable being wrapped in a small towel before you attempt yourself. It can cause him/her to become scared of you/the trim in the future. Nail filing would be ideal as its easier, some parrots won't go for it, hence the above process. FB group is in the works haha will post in on all previous video descriptions in the near future.

    My bird nonstop screams if I am not in the same room as her. It has been going on got 2 years now and I have tried nearly everything (I could give her 8 hours of attention and she would still scream until she goes to sleep if I leave.) It is nearing surrender at this point as now she has become a trigger for me.

    I have 2 budgies, and when i go back and forth to the kitchen on weekends to cook, clean, etc. they scream their lungs out. If i go back, i dont pay attention to them, but i do stuff in the room so they probably think that i am responding to their call. Staying in one room is not an option. How can I train them not to yell when I also go back and forth in rooms? Please help.

    Hi my African Grey is 4 years old recently he picked up a habit of sneezing and coughing very loudly.. I am very sensitive because I went through a lot of trauma in my life before I got my parrot..im getting very sick as I can't deal with the irritating sounds and he does it for my attention. I'm actually thinking of giving him away as I can't take it anymore.. I have heated arguments with My son and husband about this.. They tell me to ignore him but Im at my wits end.. Please help me. I also work from home so I need to concentrate.. Sometimes I think of letting him fly away.. But deep down I love him and don't want to be cruel. But he is testing my patience..

      Yep give it a try, part of the screaming could be because it wants attention. Important to spend quality time. I usually do this with Elfie in the late afternoon when I’m done working for the day. Scratches, lubbies , trick training before bed. And when you say wild, as I’m caught in the wild and used to live with a wild flock?

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For toys I would try a variety, to figure out what works best. I.e. wood toys, thin wood toys, straw toys, colorful ones etc. you can go to your local bird store and grab a variety. I bought Elfie a foraging box and I add pellets inside so they are hard to get to but he spends a lot of energy trying to get them all day lol this helps a lot. Lots of toys will help your parrot self entertain part of the day.

    Boo, my avatar, is a rescue bird. His first owner gave him up for adoption because the noise bothered her SO. He is much quieter than my first Conure, or maybe my hearing has been adapted by the prior 30 years. In any event the more quiet it’s humans are the quieter the bird will be. Conures are still going to scream at 120 db if something bothers them.

    I have two parrots, a 8 month old, female African Grey Congo & a Double Yellow Head Amazon… My female joined my family 1st, she started out pretty quiet & shy & slowly but surely became obsessed with me & turned into a total stalker…If, I leave the room she whistles extremely LOUD! & or fly off her cage and go look for me upstairs. The whistling & screeching is annoying …
    My Double Yellow Head is a male & he is new, & he is pretty laid back…But, now I see he is getting bad influenced by my AGC😡& Im now trying to nip in the bud his weird noise he makes now when I leave the room …
    He makes like an owl noise & she does a lot of whistling …
    What has been working for me , is me putting her in her cage. And covering the front part , like a blinder … so, she can’t see if I’m there or not & I noticed that has helped or limited him & definitely stopped her as she can’t see me. Thanks for the video …
    I would have tried the ignoring part but I have to nip it in the bud as she is no longer alone & I don’t want her influencing the new one…

    We've finally brought our caique home on Saturday and I really want to train her when she's out (she seems to be comfortable with us), but she doesn't really accept seeds as treats (nor does she eat them much from a bowl,, she greatly prefers her veggies and fruits) and neither millet. Can I just reward her with her favourite veggie/fruit after she does good job or should I also try nuts?

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Congrats on your new Caique friend!! Yeah so after about 1-2 days of settling I would start working on training. Important thing to note, if you give your parrot access to fruits/seeds in their bowl it will make the value of the treat less tempting when training. Like if you had pizza 🍕all the time and someone offered you pizza...meh haha if your parrot likes fruits only give it small fruit pieces for training, you can also try nuts or lay out a bunch of different treats on a table and see which one it likes the most.

    I have a macaw and I believe she was force weaned because she has a very complex relationship with food. She screams at least 1-2 minutes during my 20 minute lunch. That doesn’t sound like much but its LOUD. I have a Senegal and African Gray and they have no screaming issues. Also for pellets, Harrisons and Tops are the best. Zupreem and Kaytee aren’t very good.

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good and bad is subjective, it’s definitely better than having birds on high fat and carb seed diets. I’ve had my guy on Tops and he loses weight very fast because it’s not wholesome so I add a few local sugar free pellets as well. Kaytee organics has a sugar free version also very good.

      Sorry to hear about your birb screams during lunch.

    • @MrJdubz100
      @MrJdubz100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that almost any pellet is better than a seed diet. I should also be more specific, because Zupreem makes some pellets that score relatively high, and others like zupreem Fruitblend that score very low. I know this because I fed Zupreem Fruit Blend for a long time and my Senegal developed a nutrient deficiency. My friend has better luck with Zupreem Naturals. I haven’t tried much from Kaytee so maybe they make some high end pellets, but they also market their seed mixes as all inclusive diets. I talked to my avian vet about the well known Nutriberries that have “all the benefits of pellets” according to their label, yet my vet said they should only be used as treats and make a crap staple food item. Tops is not readily accepted by as many birds so I wonder if your senegal was simply not eating it. Mine seems to grind it to dust more so than eat it so I mix it with Harrisons to make sure that she is getting enough nutrition.

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah he definitely eats it’s it and any brand of pellets alone will not usually be enough to balance a birds diet.

      Sorry, forgot to address the lunch thing. I just wear ear plugs so its not a big deal. Like you said, there are some things that can’t be avoided. I’m extremely grateful that all of my parrots are quiet until I wake up. I rarely, if ever get woken up by my parrots. I can tell from my Catalina Macaws behavior and some of her vocabulary that she didn’t come from a great household. She did well today at not screaming. She screamed for a total of maybe 10 seconds during lunch today and maybe 30 seconds outside of lunch. For the first time she screamed while I was holding her but I couldn’t figure out what she wanted.

Should I still ignore when he is screaming ? I don't consider the bird like a toy , I just want him to be happy. Even if it's annoying as hell when he is yelling T_T

      It sounds lien your bird has separation issues, it could be best to establish a routine of in/out of cage time and focus on quality time outside of the cage. Birds do this in the wild (scream) to call their flock so it’s normal to them but can sound loud to us. In time with an established routine, quality time, and ignoring the screams for attention things will be better. And yes when your bird is quite for a few mins then you can come over. Sometimes people will queue a whistle for attention instead of a scream
