Agree it is SO important to know that Pionus parrots are known to be quiet COMPARED to other parrots. Parrots are loud, so even a quiet parrot is a loud parrot. There may be exceptions but this is a good general point to understand.
Charlie is beautiful and such a sweet bird. I recently saw a Pionus advertised in my area here in the US for $4500.00. You were very lucky to pay such a reasonable price for her.
In america there are like 2 breeders for Pionus so the prices are very high. That's actually higher than average, they average 3000, but the websites for the Pionus breeders online are completely down (I just checked). In areas such as the UK Pionus will be much more affordable.
In Germany you can find Bronze Wings for 500€ and Maximilian sometimes for 200 bugs
I have become the owner of a female eclectus parrot. I always wanted a parrot but it was not in my price range. I was at my moms house and heard a bird sound I had never heard before. We looked up and there was this beautiful red parrot. I held out my hand and she flew down to me. She had no band on so I took her to several exotic vets and left my number with them and also with animal control. I also checked every form of social media (still check regularly) and never found the owner. I named her skittles and she is SO smart and has already learned so many tricks and words. The vet feels she is about 5yrs old and based on condition she more than likely had been out for a while. Since the owner has still not made contact anywhere the vet actually thinks she may have been intentionally released. I just can’t imagine paying so much for an eclectus (in my area they are about $2000-$4500 depending on where you get them from) just to let her go. But she will be well loved and have a LONG life here on our farm and I am watching many videos about parrots to learn how to best care for her. If her owner ever popped up she will be healthy for them (provided they could prove they are her owner!!)

I've had my Maxi Pionus for 13 years, and she is an absolute dream. I live in an apartment, and she only gets loud when I'm vacuuming. We used to have some fights in the past, but now we respect each other's boundaries, and things are great. She can speak about seven phrases/words, most of which are in context. These phrases include "I want to go night-night," "Shake off the water," her name, my name, "hello," "good girl," "are you okay," "I want to go to the cage," and she even waves and says "goodbye". I work from home, so we spend a lot of time together. I believe that the more time you spend with your pet, the better behaved they are. It's just like any good relationship - you have to invest the time.
That's awesome! Usually when I hear about Pi's talking it's the males, but this again goes to show that every bird is different :)

This is so playful! Thanks a lot! I never owned a parrot or bird and have been doing research on all species available. However Pionus parrots seem to bot be talked about a lot and there's very few educational content about them online. Thankfully, this goes straight to the point and your efforts in english are commendable. Great stuff

We have a Pionus since 2 days and other than my smaller birds (pyrrhura, forpus, etc.) I give him big parts of veggies and a bit fruit.
I see he enjoys making a chop of it himself😉

I actually had Quaffle (and one other) in mind with those high pitch noices lol, and just overall for the ones that maybe don't fit the stereo type with noice. I can see that some sources say 7 and others 8, but I was maybe too quick there ;)

My blue-headed pionus is very quiet and does NOT like a noisy environment. If I am having guests over or if I have the TV on, I put my pionus in another room. I can tell if my bird is upset by noise because he has a certain scream.

I have a question - did you teach Charlie to eat chop, or did she enjoy it from the start? My Osiris doesn't touch chop at all. He likes veggies in bigger pieces that he can hold and munch on. The problem is that he only eats the veg he likes, leaving the rest in the bowl.
Charlie will not eat it right when I serve it, hoping to get some treats or pellets instead, BUT she will always eat whenever I ignore her long enough and she realizes I wont give her anything else.
So you could say she enjoyed it from the start, but I would try and just let it be, even for some hours. If she knows that it is etable food, I think she will eventually eat it when she gets hungry, but you can always check out some of the guides on BirdTricks website, they are completly free, and give some very good tips :D

HI!!, I’ve been wanting a pionus maximillian for about a month and had been doing a whole bunch of research. I also would like to mention that I own a male cockatiel and I’m not sure if that would be a good fit because of the size difference and personality and beak size, what are your opinions on this situation? I’m open to hear some feedback and I would really would like to hear from your point of view. I would also like to say that I am in between of deciding if I should get a sun conure, a green cheek conure or a pionus parrot, I love all of those parrots but I’m mostly looking if it’s a right fit for my cockatiel so he won’t be harmed in any way. I would ask around on the different bird groups if I were you, they are usually super sweet and many have exactly these species mixed together :D
USUALLY what I hear (cause I also considered a green cheek for Charlie), is that Pionus are very low energy compared to cockatiels and conures and therefor they can end up getting a bit annoyed. Pionus are generally hard to bond with other species, but it depends on the individual :)
I don't hear often that they are aggressive towards other birds, but rather that they just don't care much about them and does they're own thing.
Fresh veggies and fruits are better than vitamin “infused” cardboard. LOL
I am going to the Atlanta airport tomorrow to pick up my new blue-headed pionus. It’s a male, but I don’t want to give him a name until I have a chance to get to know him.
Hi Stella, as a beginner i must say one of the best videos. Hope you have time to response. Would a Pionus be alright with being out side of the cage most of the time and just in there cage for eating and sleeping? Also would a old(cleaned) would terrarium work? 120 x 60 x 60? Made of course out of wood with a glass front?

Being outside the cage is most of the time just a plus in terms of exercise and activities, just remember to also give the bird some cage time here and there so that the cage doesn't become a place where the play stops or where it's boring, in case they need to be home alone (just a nice habit to create from the start). It's more or so the quality of time they are out than the quantity, but of course time outside as much as possible is a good thing :)
I would care a little with wood cages, they can of course be fine, but I know that Charlie and a lot of birds like to use the bars for climbing around and navigating in the cage. It's also easier in general to apply different perches and rearrange toys in a metal cage. Another concern could be humidity and cleaning of the wood. Furthermore if it's glass in front aswell as wood all around it could get very difficult to get proper air ventilation, and ammonia from the poop could make it a very unhealthy environment, especially for the bird to sleep in, so personally I would stick to stainless steel cages, although some wood cages can work :)

Right its like crate training for a dog. So he/she should feel safe in and outside of they cage.
Might be a weird question but are all bird (captive) clipt (unable to fly) if why is this? If i decide to not do this what could happen?
So you might of touched this subject if my wife and i would like 2 birds would this harm the humans bonding?

Wing clipping is really not something anyone should do, birds are made to fly, it's how they exercise and how they move around. Clipping is done because some think that the bird will be more tame since it can't fly away, but it's just learned helplessness and happens because the bird can't escape.
Others do it to prevent the bird from flying into things or away from them, as "safety", but this is untrue. The bird will learn to fly and learn it's environment, to take the ability away takes away their confidence aswell. Furthermore birds can and will fly if they get spooked, even if clipped, but it just becomes more dangerous for them since they can't steer while clipped.
So in short, don't clip, ever :)
In terms of bonding, it's difficult to say, but think about it again like a puppy. The bird might prefer you or your wife, but if you both interact with them and get them use to both of you being there, then I'm sure they will accept both of you, and this goes for one, two, three and so on birds.
They get something from having each other that we can't give them, so I think it's a great idea to get two, I just can't guarantee that your "wife's bird" will 100% be your "wife's bird" or if will prefer you (and the other way around), it's individual :)
@@stellaandcharlie so with the bonding part, i can imagine for the bird it would be such a lovely thing to not be alone. But what you say it might or might not hurt the human boding. How are birds with adding a later friend to the flock?

With the cage it's the same, but you can keep in mind what I said when researching of course :)
Basically anything with wood frames and metal bars would be fine, the ventilation and bottom material is what I would think extra about in terms of cleaning aswell. Also keep in mind the tallness in regards to what I said about cages in the video ;)
I think we are getting onto topics I don't have much experience with, but if I should say anything, then I have read from others that human bonding and bird bonding is two seperate things and that it won't hurt. In other cases I have read that it actually benefitted the human bonding, but again, I'm not sure.

They can indeed be potty trained!
Figuring out when they poop, and then placing them where you want them to followed by a treat can do wonders, but it is a hard process.
I clean Charlies cage every other to third day, but clean up whenever she poops outside the cage to keep my space clean :)

I’ve been researching on both and I’m trying to figure which one is the best one for me.
I used to own a sun conure for a couple of years since it was a few months old. Very beautiful bird but very loud and demanded lots of attention. It flew away at our new home while we were in the process of moving because my husband left the cage and the front door open as we were moving our things in.
I think it freaked out! 💔😭
We didn’t clip his wings because he would always fly back to us at our old home and we wanted to give him that freedom.
We searched and searched and no luck of finding him.😭
We live in the U.S. so finding a pionus would be much harder than finding a green cheek. 😕
I completely get that dilemma, I've been there so many times before getting Charlie and now when considering a friend I'm again back to the green cheeks.
So sorry to hear about your sun conure, but I'm happy his wings were not clipped, I'm sure you had such a great companionship and these things unfortunately just happen some time :(

Green cheeks are very nippy and can draw blood. They are slightly less loud than a Sun Conure comparing to the pitch of their voice. But they can be quiet when full. I have a GCC. They can be difficult to train due to being so bitey and hating hands. Their bite feels like a pinch. I love my GCC though. I just got him more than a week ago. I have no clue how to stop him from biting me.
@@Featheryfaith7 If you just got him I think thats a big contribute to the biting behavior since he needs to know you a bit better and settle in.
The GCC I have heard of are cuddly and playfull, but therefor also more needy, but this again shows the individuality in the birds.
Best of luck with him, if you can read the body signal before a bite and avoid it, I would just give it more time, and I'm sure he will warm up to you :)
@@stellaandcharlie I have met GCC owners and they told me they will always bite even if they know you or not. Hopefully, he will reduce the biting soon. He has been flying to me and land on my shoulder many times. He could just be very hormonal or territorial. In other places like on the floor, he aint that bitey. Oh well, thank you for commenting. 😊
Extremely informative. I've only ever had Finches and Budgies. I do live in an apartment building so just looking at possible 'low noise' larger birds. I'm in no rush, just learning as much as I can for now. Thank you from Toronto, Canada for this info. Subscribed now too. :)

Hi Stella, I hope you could advise me. I've adopted a 4 months old Pionus Parrot. At the beginning I did things wrong (grab her from the back, forced her to eat, lots of crushes... :( So now she is freaking out of me. Every time I open the door of the cage, she climbs to the other side trying to scape from me. The breeder told me that I should grab her everyday and put her on my arm, and as many times as she flights off, repeat the process until she understand I am of not danger, but It isn't working, she is even more afraid every time. She sometimes flights off scared and smashes with the window (I am buying stickers)
What should I do? Is It posible to gain her confidence or is it no longer possible? Should I just wait her to approach me? She doesn't even accept treats from me...
If you could advise on what would you do I would appreciate very much.

I would definitely say that you have been advised wrongly here unfortunatly. Forcing an animal to do something until they accept it is called "learned helplessness", since they dont "learn that the thing isnt scary" but rather "learn to give up" if that makes sense.
Even though it may have back tracked your relationship I would never say that it's too late, but it is gonna take some time :)
If you emagine that she now sees your hand as a bad thing (cause of the grabing), she first needs to see it as a neutral thing (hand does nothing), and then a good thing (hand = treats).
What I would do to get to the neutral state is simply show her the hand (at a distance at first), and if she dosent react you can bring it closer and closer and so on. When/if she reacts I would keep the hand on that threshold until she relaxes, and then remove the hand as a reward for the calm behavior.
So if it makes sense:
First get the hand to a neutral state by getting your hand as close as possible until she reacts, then rewarding her for staying calm by removing the hand.
Second, when the hand is less of a threat you can put it beside her or try and put treats in it (now the reward for accepting the hand is the treats).
I really hope it makes sense, but remember that it can take mounths between these steps, and some days will be better than others.
But in short, yes, let her come to you and build trust that way. Best of luck :D

It does sound weird that he/she is still doesn't have the "white crown" at two years old. It could be a possibility that you have a hybrid of some sort, but I of course can't be sure just from description alone.

@@stellaandcharlie We got one by the way. Total setup cost me around 2 grand. grand for the bird, 500 for the cage and then 500 on toys, accessories, food etc. shes about 5 months old.

I was set on a Pionus, but decided on a female Cape Parrot - through lots of research, I found that I am a more perfect fit for a female Cape… Really diving into each species is imperative when deciding which type of bird to share a lifetime with. She’s been a part of our family for about five months - we are so bonded, and truly are two birds of a feather!🪶 ❤🪶❤️
