We unexpectedly got an amazon parrot, and we NEVER had had any bird before, but he was in a very dire situation being abused, and you don't just leave an innocent animal in need. My arms have some deep scars since he was very afraid of us the first year. Now, eight years later he is our love bug, and he is outside his cage for 8 -12 hours a day since I work from home. Rocky is 22 years old, and he will be with us until he dies. Period.

    • @falconiustallon

unless its young, (under a year) id skip a wild bird for a first bird. otherwise you might get discouraged when training. this happened with a "princess of whales" i had before i landed on my first bird. (pun intended)
Ringnecks, or Alexandrines (my first bird) are absolutely excellent first birds, especially when hand raised.

IRNs are amazing! That being said there is no one bird that isn't hard to look after. They require daily attention and some training/mental stimulation to prevent behavioral problems. If you will be too busy to give quality time to your parrot or want a low maintenance pet I would look toward maybe getting a cat? If you really want to own a parrot, I would definitely do research to make sure it will be a good fit and you can commit long term. They live anywhere from 20-50 years in captivity :)
