    Finally, finally a proper video on Ion Beams and Prisms. I read Captain Redstone's entire article about all the nitty gritty of prisms, but I was confused on how to properly build the dang things to begin with, plus that article is more or less outdated as of the new game, with brand new mechanics like large shields. This video provided answers for even more confusion I had about about the prisms and went over several different tactics with them that'd be helpful, but...
    I still have no idea how to actually build the Ion Cores myself, so all this extensive information I have about them is practically useless. Hate to seem overly demanding, but a guide about Core-building itself, _if possible,_ would be much appreciated.
    Great video anyways!..

    Thanks for the nice intro to ion beams. For demonstration, the binary tree of prisms at the beginning (1:17) makes sense, but technically you don’t need half the prisms in the first column and delete the 2nd one, right? The top of two adjacent prisms can point down and the bottom one becomes a combining instead of a redirecting prism! I was just wondering, because immediately afterwards you demonstrate reducing superfluous prisms…

    I have two channels for my ion beams and they will freely shoot and rotate to aim at a enemy as long as I don't order an attack on them, but as soon as I target a specific part of the ship (i.e. cockpit) they stop shooting immediately the beams aren't hitting my own ship and they only stop attacking when i give a specific target, any ideas as to why that's happening?

  • @jacobliefeld9248
    @jacobliefeld9248 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    All well and good... but how do you rotate them? Aside from up down left right, I have been unable to get any kind of angling on my prisms. And I don't know why.

  • @BalthazarB2
    @BalthazarB2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Speaking of prisms, I have a build where I've put one last prism at the tip of my ship so it can turn and aim, but it seems to be locked in place. I was able to get it unlocked once, but then in turned weirdly.
    How do I get the last output prism to act nicely as a turret?

    • @SarisWinterwisp
      @SarisWinterwisp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tools are planned in the future to make prisms better turrets (such as being able to limit their arcs, them not rotating into your ship and such) but currently they're somewhat janky. I myself, though it requires micromanagement, tell them to fire on specific opponent parts and if I disengage untarget them so they can rotate back to forward in their default state

    • @threeforthsstudios

    Good job on the video. I appreciate the concise descriptions and the in-game demonstrations.
    One suggestion for improvement is to consider carefully how some things you say might affect your audience. Talking about how some designs would "make you cry" and how you would be "disappointed" if you saw some of these things is language that may attack your audience and put them on the defensive, leading them to resist what you are saying. Keep in mind that your audience may be doing these exact things today. You don't want to attack them for making suboptimal designs. Instead, as you do in the latter half of the video, show why your designs are superior and encourage players to adopt these designs instead.

    prism ships have a huge drawback in the amount of crew for 1 weapon. i fear some huge economy loss from armor alone but then again, basic plate is easily salvaged. theres no point defence or missiles either, and most prism ships dont even have factories. But its really nice looking at :D my void ray dream is finally becomming real.

  • @Nathual
    @Nathual ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good Tutorial bud, My only suggestions is don't jump the camera around so much. People want to see what you are talking about and be able to study it. For example on the first section. It would be worth your time to do 2 takes on the setup there and then splice the video when needed. One for the setup of the prisms and then another of the beam breaking through the armor. Using your mouse pointers to point out different things while you talk about them, while not moving the camera. This way you can talk about what is happening as it happens on screen with a steady view of what is taking place for your audience.

    • @SarisWinterwisp
      @SarisWinterwisp  ปีที่แล้ว +6

  • @majortwitched
    @majortwitched ปีที่แล้ว

    Still confused on something. You said that bad designs have redirecting prisms. Is the only draw back that they add cost and weight? Or does going one to one still lose you damage as well? At least to me the there is some value in redirects because you bury the ion beams behind more defense and depending on the layout allow the weapon to keep firing with a reduced arc if the main is knocked out.

    • @SarisWinterwisp
      @SarisWinterwisp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's only that it costs more. But it's a hefty price, and if it's destroyed then your ship can't fire anyway because it was relying on that to shoot

    Thanks for the video. Are prisms and railguns better then deck guns?

    • @NB-TB
      @NB-TB ปีที่แล้ว

      Never tried deck guns as they stun nearby crew when they fire.

    • @SarisWinterwisp
      @SarisWinterwisp  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Weapons aren't all necessarily better or worse objectively so, they all have different niches and fulfill different purposes
      - Railguns are high range precision burst weapons, but suffer when you have to get through a lot of armor or heavy shielding
      - Ions are very strong constant damage weapons good at pressuring, but have no burst ability (making them also struggle against shields) and often require immobilizing opponents to deal damage
      - Deck guns are new so there's not as much solid info about them (plus they're likely prone to being changed), but their shtick as it appears thus far is being able to stack lots and lots of defenses in front of them at the cost of no projectile velocity, which makes it so hitting stuff is extremely difficult

    • @derkylos
      @derkylos ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SarisWinterwisp Really long railguns can punch through nearly anything, and each tile they punch through also takes damage and fire, AND they outrange pretty much anything. The only thing that can consistently defend against them is massed flak (long railgun projectiles are very fast, tho, so you need a LOT of flak to shoot them down) or several efficient shield generators (if you can catch the entire projectile on shields, then recharge the generators before the next shot, you can effectively neuter even the longest railgun).
      A railgun paired with a few EMP missiles is an incredibly powerful long range weapon system, as the EMP will drop any shields while the railgun blows things up. You just neet to tack on enough reverse thrust to allow you to control the engagement range and you can punch well above your "weight class" (oh, and keep an eye on missile ranges. Your need for speed will probably result in a fairly vulnerable design, especially to the flanks and rear where missiles like to land. Also, the fact that ammo factories require mined materials can be a pain if you're not careful with your storage.)
      Sidenote: yes, I like railguns. Why do you ask? :P

    • @NickAndriadze
      @NickAndriadze ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@derkylos Incredibly long railguns are painfully cost-efficient, though, especially past 9 accelerators after which their unique ability of extending railguns' range reaches its hard limit. That's why you'll never see a competitive design that uses more than 9 accelerators, like, EVER. It is 100 times more worth it to built two 9 accelerator railguns than one 20 accelerator one, as not only they have most of the benefits like maximum range already, they also cost cheaper and do more raw damage. Most people argue that the best way to use railguns is to spam over a dozen of ones without any accelerators at all, as they are the most cost-to-damage efficient and take less energy to power per point of damage as well, but I am personally against these designs because not only they look way uglier than normal railfans do, they also expose way more of your ship that each needs defending, practically rendering their cost-efficiency useless. They also don't have any benefits of accelerators obviously, like increased projectile velocity, range and, yeah, raw damage.
      Plus, _Railguns don't start fires on ships!_ It might appear like that, but only because you might pierce through and destroy an explosive object while attacking a ship, or manually target it.

    • @derkylos
      @derkylos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NickAndriadze Do accelerators beyond 9 increase the penentrating power, tho? 'Coz that's really the thing I like most about them (well, when combined with the ridiculous range). You might not be blowing out the shield generator in one shot, but if you can do damage to components behind an active shield, eventually you'll destroy the generator completely...especially if they can't return fire (so you have all the time in the world to plink at them :P).

  • @arcdecibel9986
    @arcdecibel9986 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe it's just the way I'm playing, but I don't see the point to combining beams like this when you can just spread like ten out over a horizontal surface and have them all shoot the same thing. That seems to do a lot more damage and isn't as vulnerable to return fire.

  • @ricks4348
    @ricks4348 ปีที่แล้ว

    So does this game already boil down to one type of weapon is far the best and the rest just aren't worth it? I know balancing is tough in in video games but I really wanted to make a variety of types of ships

    • @SarisWinterwisp
      @SarisWinterwisp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, not at all! There's certainly ways how weapons can be optimized (as shown in this video), but there isn't an objectively best strategy or weapon thus far in any way! Even some of the previously weakest options like mines and EMPs are finding effective usage these days
