Can you beat a pokemon game using only “fixed damage” moves?
I’m using a loose definition of “fixed damage” to include moves that deal a predictable amount of damage even if that value changes. The moves allowed would include:-
*Sonic Boom* - Deals 20HP damage.
*Dragon Rage* - Deals 40HP damage.
*Night Shade* - Deals damage equal to user’s level.
*Seismic Toss* - Deals damage equal to user’s level.
*Super Fang* - Deals damage equal to half the target’s current HP.
*Endeavor* - Lowers the target’s HP to equal the user’s current HP.
*Final Gambit* - Causes the user to faint and deals damage to the target equal to amount of HP the user lost.
*Nature’s Madness* - Deals damage equal to half the target’s current HP.
*Fissure* - Causes target to faint.
*Guillotine* - Causes target to faint.
*Horn Drill* - Causes target to faint.
*Sheer Cold* - Causes target to faint.

@Nicholas Natale Gible learns Dragon Rage at level 7, Axew at level 10 and both Horsea and Bagon can inherit it via egg move.
Also Gastly starts with Night Shade in Gen I, so does Duskull...until Gen VIII
And last but not least Pinsir learns Seismic Toss at level 8 starting on Gen IV (until Gen VIII where it was retconned to level 12) and pokémon like Teddiursa, Miltank, Heracross or Mawile can inherit it via egg move.
It would be kinda tricky to pull off (specially depending on which generation you want to do it), but it should be feasible to do.

      @steveh1474 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@Bomberthegreat that was only gen 1, where it wouldnt work at all if your level was lower than theirs, and some other stupid things with speed. after gen 1, OHKO moves are much more consistent with a 30% accuracy, that is only modified the same way the accuracy of Ice Beam or Fire Blast might be modified.
except for Sheer Cold, which has 10% accuracy in gen 7 and 8 when not used by an ice type, which was strictly changed to mess with Sheer Cold Smeargle, who also gets Mind Reader anyway.

12:12 Just fyi, crits only bypass stat changes that would reduce damage. So if an opponent raised its defense or dropped your attack, and you got a crit, then those changes would be ignored, but if you boost your attack, or lower their defense, then that is still counted on top of the crit.
However, it does operate the way you described it in the Generation 1 games (not the remakes). In those games crits can be a detriment if you boost your stats.

    "crits bypass stat changes"
Not in generation 3. From the wiki:
"From Generation III onwards, when a move scores a critical hit, the attacker's negative stat stages, the defender's positive stat stages, and the defensive boosts from Light Screen, Reflect, and Aurora Veil are always ignored. However, the halved Attack from burn is no longer ignored."
even in gen 2, crits were always preferable. They only ignore your stat boosts if your enemy has an equal or greater stat boost.

A tip: I think run would have been easier if you utilized Bellsprout’s ability. Remove Growth for Sunny Day (in Safari Zone) and on the first pokemon, pray it only attacks, put it to sleep and set up sun. You will then guarantee outspeed any pokemon due to chlorophyll. Then you can teach it Solarbeam (in Pokemon Mansion). This will require turn counting and a bit of luck with Sleep Powder. Hope this gives you an idea of other ways to get the most out of a weak pokemon. I am an avid grass type solo run player and my solo Oddish run was similar to yours. Even when resisted, Solarbeam really chunked the squishy ghost types in Agatha’s team.

15:15 you actually don't have to worry about losing friendship when grinding against the Elite 4. Sure fainting makes the pokemon's friendship drop by 1, but even just having it in the party when you face an E4 member (as well as a Gym Leader or Champion) will raise its friendship by 1-3, and leveling up raises its friendship by 2-5.

12:10 You're thinking of Gen 1. In every gen after Gen 2, it only ignores stat changes that decrease damage (if your attack has been lowered or the target's defense has been raised). Growth will still increase the power of your crits. Remember, if something is in Gen 1 and sound sounds like a bug, that's because it's a bug.
Really, all things considered, it might have actually been a better play to get rid of Return for Thief so you could have used Growth to power up both Razor Leaf and Thief.

12:10 - Untrue. Critical hits have had a *really* inconsistent history, with rules changing from what is/isn't ignored to what will/will not boost the odds. But from Gen 3 onward this part of the rules is pretty simple: Critical Hits will ignore anything that might reduce the damage you would do unless you're burned and using a physical attack. That's it. So if your opponent has high (Sp or not) defense (regardless of whether it's something like Reflect/Barrier) it will be ignored, but if they have *lowered* defense, it will *add* to the move's power. Same with ATK. Your lowered ATK/SpATK will be ignored (except via a burn), but higher ATK/SpATK will increase damage. With all of this being applied on top of the existing crit damage.

I don't recall, have you done a gen 4 run yet? If so, HGSS with Spearow or Togepi might be interesting. Spearow because of the often 'stolen' Spearow, Togepi because it being the first ever Pokémon Egg obtained in Pokémon.
Otherwise, I love the runs where you don't (just) use a specific Pokémon, but a theme most. The only trades, Metronome, without new moves etc. The runs with specific Pokémon are still lots of fun to watch, of course, but the ones with a theme feel more exciting, more original and more fun.

For the Rival 6 fight, just before Victory Road, it seems bellsprout may have out-speeded charizard without the quick claw.
At level 50, (so a bit off, since it's 53), it can have a max speed of 167, though that includes perfect IVs, beneficial nature, and max EVs in speed. My math may not be perfect, but taking away the EVs, and the 10% boost from a beneficial nature, it would have a speed of 119 with perfect IVs.
I'm unsure if it could have perfect IVs, so seeing as bellsprout had 116, it may have actually out-speeded on its own

Hey MDB I don't know if anyone already posted this, I couldn't find it in the top comments, but in every game after Gen 1, Crits only bypass the stat changes if they are bad for the one attacking. If for example, 2 pokemon are repeatedly using calm mind, then one of them crits a confusion, it will ignore the buffed defense of the opponent, but the attacker's buffed special attack will be used in the calculation. Only in Gen 1 did it bypass all stats including good ones.

Crits only ignore negative stat changes.
So it actually deals more damage if you boost your attack or special attack and then get a crit.
When your Attack or Special Attack stat is lowered the crit will ignore these changes and you deal the same damage as if your stat isn't lowered and your attack crits.
Crits ignore the opponents defensive statboosts. (But only positive changes by calm mind or so) When the targets defensive stats are lowered and you get a crit, you deal more damage.
Maybe this will help you in other runs ^^

How about a Chatot only run if that hasn’t been done before? Imagine all the damage you could do with Chatter! :D
Plus also in Gen 4 you could literally just scream into the mic for either a higher confusion chance or higher base damage (I can’t really remember). Soooo, shameless plug every time the move is used?

Catch a random Pokémon with Pickup and get it to pickup 4 Revives. Then Revive them every time they use Explosion then they could struggle until they learn new moves. That would have to be done a lot of times.

The premise if roughly the same regardless, play a game on hard mode. That's why I think most of us come here. If you want to, you can always run something in those gens.
