  • Let's make a Montessori-inspired play kit really suited for a babbler! Today we're returning to the "Make your own Montessori inspired play kits" series and taking a look at Lovevery's 'The Babbler' Play Kit for 13-15 Months.
    This is the first kit in the toddler range. We are now increasing the price to $120 for a new box every 3 months. Lovevery's play kits have always hit the nail on the head with naming their kits in line with our childrens' development and curating the appropriate toys. Unfortunately, that same trend did not carry over into 'The Babbler'. While any activity can certainly be used as a language opportunity, there is not a singular language-specific activity in this kit (book aside, as they do include one in every kit). In recreating Lovevery's 'The Babbler,' we not only focus on working the same skills as their activities--we take it to the next level.
    Our Montessori-inspired play kit will feature more diverse activities, including opportunities specifically focused on language development and...well, babbling!
    As always, whether you choose to subscribe to Lovevery, another play kit service, buy these on your own, or DIY--do what works best for your family! I am so happy to see that many of you are interested in learning about the best way to create a Lovevery comparable play kit. But please remember that whatever you choose for your family is absolutely fine as well :)

    I know I’m late to this channel and I SO hope you come back to making these videos. Everything you said in this kit review and especially next one made total sense and I got replacements instead. Then, almost immediately after, I found this kit for a deep deep discount on FB marketplace. My 12mo old enjoyed the ball run even though he can’t push it in. He tinkered with it a bit and figured he could just put the ball on the plastic spiral and watch it go down. He loves Melissa and Doug barn doors much much more than the ball run though. Burrow was also a hit he really likes placing our various animals in it. Overall if you can find this kit second hand definitely get it. But specially get Maria’s recommendations those are always a hit!!!

    I would like to see these types of videos once you get your Lovevery Kit as to see what your daughter was interested in, what tasks she was able to do at the moment, and of course any dupes you find are great because not all the Lovevery Kits are necessary in my opinion ( some you can just dupe and/or customize for your child's current level )..Keep 'em coming. These video are so helpful for us newbie mommas!! =)

    Always a big fan of review videos and seeing how babies/toddlers actually interact with the toys and if they keep interacting past the “month” date too!

      Honestly I find that she often interacts with them BEFORE the intended month range. 🙈

    Going back and watching these after seeing your most recent. I have to say that my girl loves the bunnies in a borrow (but also seems obsessed with all things containment). Also the pounding of the ball on the ball run was not difficult for her at all, she figured it out immediately at 13 months, but the opening and closing of some of the various doors was actually a little tricky for her. I do agree with you, some more items to encourage language development would have been nice in this kit.

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The bunnies in a burrow are definitely adorable! Containment is huge at this age so it definitely makes sense. Maybe they could at least add some other animals into that burrow for more language exposure 😅 If I remember correctly, your daughter is about 14 months now? Would love to hear how she does with the doors closer to the end of this age range! Stella's pounding skills came in a bit later but she has always been very strong in figuring out how to open just about everything 😵‍💫

    I know your little one isn’t at the age of the other boxes, but I would LOVE to see you break down the other boxes just like this and give reasons for the toys and alternatives! This video was great and I’ve been looking at the older playkits and would love your opinion first!

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you!! I have been taking a look at them actually! I'm still working on the best way to approach those videos as they definitely incorporated more open-ended play and less Montessori with these boxes. But I am thinking of addressing these soon as I'm assuming by the time Stella is 3, they will have updated them anyway! 🤔

    For the ball drop, try a smaller wooden ball that would go through easier, like the Grimm wooden balls or a ping pong ball.
    For some of the materials being too easy, perhaps Begin the play kit one age ahead rather than their current age range ☺️

  • @melody_shmelody
    @melody_shmelody 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Love these videos! I did notice the recommended ages for a lot of the materials you recommend (the latch barn for example) are older than 15 months. Can you tell me more about your reasoning for this and how to use these materials safely with younger children?

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Melody! You're right, I've noticed this about almost every material I've ever purchased. Even the ones from Montessori stores will come in a box with a higher age limit, despite being sold in the infant/toddler section. From what I know about age recommendations, it's a mix of safety and the average age when the child would be able to fully engage and enjoy the toy from a traditional play standpoint. So safety is obviously not negotiable but because it's hard to know what that age limit is on the toy independent of the "enjoy and can use" factor 🤔
      So when I look for items for these videos and for Stella, I start with what Lovevery has, and compare it against what Montessori suppliers and books offer for this age. Then I check for small parts and what could be a safety concern if the material I'm looking at is very different from what is being offered. There's a wonderful wooden spiral run that was much more similar to that ball drop from Lovevery, but instead of a ball, they all came with a marble. So that was an obvious pass. For the latches barn, I looked for any similar items of concern before purchasing and didn't see any. When it arrived, I could confirm the animals are large enough to not be a chocking hazard and the latches are secure (one of the reasons I go for brands I know like Melissa & Doug-trust their quality!). Traditionally, I imagine it's hard to believe that a child as young as 14 or 15 months could even manage one latch and thus wouldn't enjoy the toy. But very little of the Montessori approach falls in line with traditional expectations. I thought we would start with all the latches undone first, but as soon as I took it out of the box, Stella figured out how to open 2 of them.
      As for how to use them safely, I start with just that. Opening and trying them out together. I let her go for the material and watch her, because whatever she is going to do in this initial impulse is usually a good indicator of what she may do if she's working independently with it later on. If there's anything that could indicate a danger later on, I reserve it as a "supervised use only" material. Our dry pouring with beans is a material like this-she is pretty good with it but still has the impulse to do a taste test once in a while. So it's only allowed when I'm working with her with it. And then the next several times she works with a new material, I will model what to do if it is difficult for her or she is not getting it. I'm also careful not to accidently model dangerous behavior myself, like throwing the hammer from the pounding toy or carrying the barn with only 1 hand. But typically she has been pretty good about making those discoveries independently, so I am just watching for any potential patterns or indicators that she'd use the material in a way that would be dangerous, and then model the correct behavior if I see any.
      I hope some of this long essay gives you some insight on that? 😅 Of course, always go with what you see your child would be interested in and capable of using in a safe way! ❤

      @@MariaandMontessori awwwh yes this is what i have naturally found myself doing because i also got the latches when i saw how good the material was and only realised the age guide after it arrived because i watched mia play with it. Whenever i present or pyt out a new activity i just observe what Huda will do with it if i don't intervene and i don't let get actually do anything too dangerous but i need to know if it is safe enough for her to have it left for independent play. A couple toys activities i saw that were dangerous were the cotton buds that she likes posting into these holes i made on a cardboard box for her she loves it but sometimes idk how she is not like most ppl who hate that texture of cotton but she likes to start teething with it and other activities with small pieces i just can't wait for the time i dont ned to worry about her mouthing everything. I think now her crayons are safe she's not been interested in terthing with them the past 3 weeks im so proud of the effort we've put in to figure that out. But still you are so good with researching evrything i just dont know where i can find time for it. I didnt mention that im my Dad's carer so i have the responsibility of the house and my father and sibling too along with giving my daughter the Montessori day to day life prioritising her development and our bonding over the normal chores etc.
      I liked seeding the beans pouring activity its made me realise how i could implement it properly. We've started pouring milk and water from her jugs but the glass jug we had always leaves a bit a the bottom its like a mini pitcher so frikkin cute but not that good for practicality i cant find any real pitchers for her of glass.

      Also modelling@!!!!! I just never seem to keep it in my mind exactly how sensitive she is for ant action i do in front of her. Its crazy that just one time i hold something with one hand she will do thr same she started to throw books down onto my lap onto the bed because i do that sometimes with blankets or her sleep sack and other things my own work bag the recycling into the bin shes started to throw the recycling in instead of placing it in like we'r used to i have to be so much more careful literally in 2 minutes of me going to the kitchen preparing the boiling water for pasta she had my phone and reached the headphones to connect them into the socket i was just there in time not having heard a thing for a minute but she ws so close to actually connecting them this was very bad moment for me i felt so bad but its literally what she sees she tries at some point if its available these things are too dangerous for us we can tell them to use both hands or to be gentle or to put things down slowly or use utensils properly or use hands instead of our mouth to open something loll but its not going to do anything if they see us do it. You are so acccccurate about all these things we need to keep in our minds.

    I didn’t think a 13-15 was ready for the stacker. Or at least kids I’ve worked with would get upset with the stacker by Melissa and Doug with multiple sizes or they’d walk away :( that has happened to me with kids and multiple toys they just walk away. So I’m like ok they don’t like that one 😂😂 the posting activity was something a child who was nearing two who I worked with still struggled with. she was 23 months. makes me worry about the kids I took care of! Maybe they have development delays! It’s frustrating that many parents just don’t seem to care much about their kids’ development. Good to see you do 🥰

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      See at 13-15 months, Stella was behind some of her peers with the stacker! She was not into it for a long time until it clicked one day and she discovered her own method. Same exact thing with posting. I saw her peers working well with variations of posting and she was just abandoning the activity in frustration. It took a unique approach to each activity for her to feel that she can do it and get excited about it. And of course, a lot of exposure!
      But every child is so different. Stella isn't too big into gross motor skills like trying to jump or crawl onto everything, so she is spending her time refining other skills. Someone else may care more about getting a better view of the world from high up and spend their day working on climbing onto a chair. But that work isn't any less important 🥰

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aha I mean the kits are still a great way to get some quality items 👌 it's really a trade up of tome/effort vs cost.
      Absolutely! A practical life day in the life or maybe a compilation of the various practical life activities (or both?) coming soon. I do have a video of practical life activities we did around 12 months - she was getting more refined in her movements by 13 months but the activities were the same at that point! But an update is definitely due, especially considering she wasn't feeling practical life when I filmed our Montessori routine video 😫 It still is hit and miss at 16 months too and I don't expect that to change. I'm not always in the mood for my adult practical life activities either 😅

  • @hannahscott6604

    See I disagree I think latches are too hard for a 13 month old.

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      At exactly 13 months, it may be too hard for some, though not necessarily all 13 month olds. But considering the kit takes us through the 15th month, the latch activity would last much longer. We introduced it right between 14 and 15 months, and Stella already figured out several of the latches on her first try, so I'm sure I could've even tried it earlier. But she is very interested in the challenge and now at almost 18 months, is trying to close them back. As opposed to introducing another version of the pull handles and peek-a-boo flaps that the lovevery tracker has, which we already practice in other materials. This was a more versatile, long lasting option for us.
