Never heard about Elf and Ronnie James Dio´s performance with this band until today. Maybe not so good and magnificent as with Rainbow or Dio itself, but anyway great: the good and old seventie´s sound. His voice is, in addition to being unmistakable, of legendary power and with a very personal touch.
It's a real shame that Elf didn't make another recording after Dio became prominent in rock music. They were a magnificent band. I love listening to their music so much.
Until finding this, the only Elf track I'd ever heard was a cover of "Stay With Me". I'm of course familiar with Dio's work in Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band, and this is quite different and very cool in its own right.
Came to listen to elf expecting an older version of rainbow, but holy shit was i wrong, i won't say what is better but i'll just say this is very.. different.. damn
It got him away from this. I'm sorry, I love Dio, but this stuff is awful. All that growl sounds totally out of place with this happy, bouncy stuff. He got it right with Blackmore and for me, went God with Sabbath.
Vocals totally in shape, but imagewise and thematically, this was going nowhere. When this was recorded, Sabbath, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Priest, Thin Lizzy and many others were on a roll, quickly changing sounds and messages across the globe. Ronnie was a bit behind the progressive guys.
Totally agree. Dio will always be one of the best singers ever...but it just sounds weird here...happy, bouncy stuff and all that growl coming from Dio. His stride wasn't found here. He hit it in Rainbow and especially Sabbath.
I always knew Dio was in a band called Elf but I've never heard anything by him before Rainbow. To me this sounds awkward. It's like hearing Lemmy Kilmister sing with the Momma's and the Poppa's. His voice was way to heavy for this type of music.
I hear what you're saying. I can appreciate this bluesy band when feeling mellow. Let's just be glad he didn't stop evolving. He was meant to sing angry, not happy. Great voice whatever he decided to sing, though. So glad he had a metal vision. Bebop to blues to Rainbow to Sabbath to Dio.

Just listened to this for the first time in 25 years and man did it bring me back. What a masterpiece.
FACTS!!!!
Amazing album!! Just discovered after 40 years of fandom..
Purchased this album when I was like 13/14 years old. I'm 54 now Lol Dedicated Fan!!!
10 years since ronnie past away ,but he's never forgotten
Ronnie is ok, trust me Bro! I found out first hand today. Ronnie's doing great! Facts!!!
Dio had the same vocals his entire life, amazing, a true talent. Wish I could've seen him onstage.
Had the honor to see him once- in 86. What a beast!
I've been a Sabbath/Dio fan for years and never checked out Ronnie's previous stuff. What have I been missing? This is amazing!
ah . well Mr DIO has been around since the 50's ....... The ONLY guy to SURF the Genres .. and Still be Successful .. ;)
Check out Ronnie Dio and the Redcaps if you want your mind blown - Dio doing early 60's doo wop.
Listen to rainbow. They re even better.
You didn't miss it, you're just a little late 😁
U hide u head n sand
DIO THE real fuckin' deal man... sorely missed....nuff said RIP Ronnie
Mr. Ronald James Padavona Rip 🎵🎼🎶🎤😭🙏
My first time to completely listen to "Trying to Burn the Sun" album. Good listen
Ronnie James dio. El mejor.
Claro que si. Arriba Dio, la chona, y yo!
Fantastic vocalist, songwriter and lyricist. I wish he had reformed Elf for one album after he left Rainbow.
maybe, but wouldn't have been worth the world losing his two Sabbath albums.
Sad part is they planned to reunite and make another album before he had died.

But he did then a masterpiesecalled.....
...you might have head about...

What is wrong with you?
BASS!!! By a 24 year old kid from Cortland!! Killer....One of the best bass players of all time!!!
+Keith Gruber
So are you Craig's brother?
Yes...
Agree, awesome bass lines!
Yup. Nice work here. Damn shame that guy from Weston-super-Mare didn't appreciate his talents...
the only cool thing out of cortland was dio and the elves
I felt in love with him. I'll love him forever. The best voice ever, the best artist ever and ever...

7:20 sounds like someone was listening to Rambling Man before they recorded the solo.

Vida eterna ao Dio, sinto saudades desse baixinho demais.
Dio with famous North Finland Kajaani Symphony orchestra.
Love this band! Everything Dip touched turned to gold
Got me an original LP recently
muito bom, muito bom, bons tempos anos 70 ate 88 só banda show mesmo, existia metal e melodia nas musicas
RJD in top form on this. Elf could've evolved into DIO later and RJD could've skipped Rainbow/Sabbath.
No way Rainbow was astoundingly good fronted by Ronnie. Richie's best work imo. And the Dio band was basically an extension of his Sab years.
super nice guy! met him a very long time ago on KC,very polite!
Oh yeah, Dio got the Groove
GRACIAS, GRACIAS, GRACIAS, GRACIAS, GRACIAS, GRACIAS ......
ALL ELF ALBUMS SO AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the upload, miss this man .
talento insuperável..grande dio!!

SUPER
Holy Diver as an Elf. What a Set o' pipes on that Mofo ! R.I.P. RJD
R.I.P.Ronnie
Blackmore was the best thing to happen to Ronnie. It catapulted DIO on an epic journey.
It got him away from this. I'm sorry, I love Dio, but this stuff is awful. All that growl sounds totally out of place with this happy, bouncy stuff. He got it right with Blackmore and for me, went God with Sabbath.
Way different from his Red Caps era…. Rawer, getting to the Rainbow
Playlist?
Sounds like Danny Bowes from Thunder singing

Elf is Jim Croce on steroids.
Cute album. But, honestly, can you believe anybody would have listened to it, or even remembered it, had Dio died in 1975?
Probably not
2025 still alive ????
Vocals totally in shape, but imagewise and thematically, this was going nowhere.

@@ferox965 His development between 1975 and 1980 is quite amazing 🌟
@@kimlarsson7259 Gigantic. Like the man's voice.
It drives me nuts that this album isn’t on google music
The worst thing to happen to Elf was Ritchie Blackmore!!!They were already opening for Deep Purple...you don't think they'd have been huge alone!!!!!
They SHOULD'VE BEEN. What an amazing blues/rock outfit they were.
totally agree, Blackmore is a despicable human being, no respect for anyone
Heiner Schau Thank you Brother...you're absolutely right!! Cheers my friend!!!
Sorry Heiner...please post your comment again I acsidently erased it!! Sorry!! Cheers Bro!
The first Rainbow album is better than anything from Elf.
最高!
With out blackmore their would be no black sabbath with dio and no dio so be happy what we got :)
Era Allgood I disagree I think he would have made it big even without blackmore.
You can't deny that Rainbow was an amazing band
Bullshit! We had Elf with Ronnie, Sabbath with Ozzy & Deep Purple with Ritchie long before fucking Rainbow!
You wanna hear greatness? Check out Elf's Carolina County Ball CD!
Not saying Rainbow wasn't good. Just that Ronnie with Elf was already The Cat's Ass!!! Kinda like Little Feat.
Кайф)
Fuck me. Did Paul Williams write this shit? Yeah, put it away for a rainy day. And then put on a different record anyway
It's so weird hearing THAT voice in front of such bouncy stuff. Not sure I like it...like a dragon in a Bugs Bunny cartoon...
I had 3 or 4 Elf albums. I bought them in 2012-15, when the music around was already very different. I didn't like the music
Someone is ripping off the song Saturday night alright for fighting

God. Elf was gay.
@Kalbo happy literally a gay song rofl
Faruk Akgöz Your gay tool!
No your the fag!
I have always loved Dio with Rainbow, but this music here makes me sick, a guarantee for instant bad mood. Terrible in every possible way!

It was just good old blues like a band called Humble pie. That's where Peter Frampton started Every great to start somewhere
