Jason's work just keeps getting better and better. The VW Buzz is an awesome car with 2 large flaws that were not mentioned in the video, Price and lack of hybrid powertrain. At $60 to $75K, it's hard pass for most American families that need a long hauler van. As a city dweller myself, I could total see myself driving one but not at the current price tag. I can't imagine there will be many buyers at that price since Rivian, Tesla, and Kia/Hyundai offer arguably better alternatives on paper. I wish VW would have offered a hybrid-gas-electric powertrain option that could have appealed to the masses and truly saved VW in America.

24 minutes into the video, you mentioned the UX. One of the things that gives me hope about the company I work for is that the folks behind designing the UX actually listen to those of us who have to use it every day. We have a long, uncomfortable meeting with the designers, tell them the thing they've come up with sucks, and instead of getting their feelings hurt and dismissing our concerns actually LISTEN and redesign it based on our feedback. It is glorious. Much like the production of this video.

@@beflat_trumpeter Well I'm not working with car infotainment, but no, our UX designers don't interact with our software on a daily basis as users. That's why it was so refreshing to have them listen to us and address our concerns. We give weekly feedback for our new interface, and they take our recommendations and fix the problems we have. They don't take our criticisms personally...they just give us what we need.

Easy to say, hard to do. What do they have to offer? They can't compete on price with the Koreans, they can't compete on reliability with the Japanese, they can't compete on tech with Tesla/Lucid/Rivian, and they can't compete on performance because Audi/Porsche won't let them. Competing on nostalgia might (might) work in the short term, but when the new product doesn't live up to the old one, that comes to an abrupt end (how many New Beetles have you seen lately?)

Yeah and the whole "culture icon" thing is wholly different. Sure VW is iconic brand. But not iconic brand of weird outsiders, surfers, hippies, enthusiasts and so on. No it's identity is "it's the most middle class, mass population car there is. It's the normal family car. It's blandish, not exceptional in anything, except dependable good value for money, gets the job done without making too much fuzz about itself". Just want transportation from A to B for family without having any real special feelings about it in any direction, one probably ends up with VW and guess what "I just want a car, that is a car" *is a very large segment of the population* . It's "not uncomfortable", "not too expensive", "not too big", "not too small", "does not break down all the time", "not inconveniently slow". Here have a VW... single, couple or family? Polo, Golf, Passat.

I think what the modern Auto executives have missed is the point that the great majority of the most iconic vehicles of the last century were originally utilitarian vehicles. The Ford Model T, VW Beetle, Citroën 2CV, Fiat 500, Morris Minor and Mini were all created to mobilize whole populations. All the other great automotive icons were either military transport, farm implement, delivery van or a combination of those. e.g. Willys Jeep, Land Rover, Ford F-Series, Bronco and Transit, Chevy C10, Citroën H Van, VW Bus, MB G-Wagon. The only mega-icons that don’t fit this pattern are the Ford Mustang and the Porsche 911. But both of them were adaptations of more utilitarian designs. The people at Tesla seem to understand this and those at Rivian appear not to. Why hasn’t Rivian made work focused versions of the R1T and R1S?!? And why haven’t they shown leisure versions of their Delivery Van?!?

    • @ewadge

The ID Buzz alone will not move VW forward. The starting price of this Van is over $60k US. Its a cool Van, but not obtainable by most Americans. What is hurting VW in the US is few things. 1. No Hybrid Options. Currently VW has NO Hybrid options available where most Manufacturers do. 2. Presumed Reliability Issues. Why is it that VW can't make a water pump seal that won't seep? It is VERY common knowledge in the VW community that the EA888 and other engines are known for seeping water pump gaskets and this has been an issue for well over a decade. VW why can't you fix this? 3. Trying too hard in the USA market. In the USA people remember VW as a fun brand that has always been kinda quirky, the only other brand that comes to mind that is similar to VW in this way is Subaru. You either love the brand or hate it. I find it so ironic that I still to this day get people telling me I drive Hitler's car, yet they are ok driving their Japanese cars? People forget the Japanese during the Great Wars were just as ruthless as any Nazi, want proof? Ask anyone from the Philippines and other Asian countries how Japan was. So to shake that image off, even after 75+yrs and people still say stuff like that? Is tough. 4 and Lastly, VW gambled on the EV push and Lost. People are not ready, nor can afford EV's won't even go into the infrastructure and such. That is a whole other story. VW should just focus on making Fun, RELIABLE, affordable cars. That is the ticket for a bright future.

I came here to say about the same thing about the price. One of the primary reasons the New Beetle was successful was price. It was cute, different, bold - but it was also cheap. The starting MSRP was 15k. Parents were buying it for their kids and then looking at the upmarket models. At $65k (more likely 75 when optioned - paint is a grand for crying out loud), this bus is a novelty car. It might just be the undoing of VW rather than savior. Poor range, poor ergonomics, massive size and weight. Also, side note, my '15 GTI went through 3 water pumps before 50k...

    • @eppyz
      @eppyz หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@DamianSheesh I agree with you. My MK6 GTI went through 4 dealer installed water pumps (gasket cannot be replaced alone its actually part of the water pump housing) in 50k miles. knock on wood my MK7.5 GTI that I have owned for 4 yrs is on the original one. It is just a matter of time till I will need one. Why oh Why VW can't you make a decent water pump seal. I love the Bus. I told my Family, finally an EV that I would actually consider buying. Then while at the dealer I asked what the base MSRP would be and was told BASE starts around $60k well there that I idea went right out the window. If you want a long range version with AWD it will be pushing $80k before options. That is crazy. Stuff like this?? Is very risky. Yes people will buy them but many people really can't afford them, so we will see how it plays out for VW. A huge Gamble in my book.

A Mustang GT starts at $52,000CAD. A WRX or Miata can be had for $35,000CAD. If you do apples to apples (ish) you can buy the Tesla Y performance for $79,000CAD or the Ioniq5N for $81,000CAD let alone their base models for $20,000 less. Yes, the price of vehicles has risen sharply but affordable cars can still be found. @@markpfeifer1402 There absolutely are. Mitsubishi Space Star/Mirage (available pretty much everywhere on Earth) comes to mind. No-frills motoring, perhaps the closest to the original VW Beetle you can get these days. Even looks half-decent after a few facelifts. In Europe, we have Dacia with a rather impressive range of serviceable cheap cars based mostly on older Renault platforms, including a very cheap (if a bit crappy) EV that is among the cheapest cars you can get in the developed world. In developing markets meanwhile, there are all sorts of stripped down versions of aged Western and Japanese models in addition to a handful of local specials (plus a new influx of Chinese cars, ranging from dubious to impressive). In the US, there are still simple compact cars like the Nissan Versa, which I doubt will ever go away. China has all sorts of funky cheap EVs that cost less than trim levels on mid-range Western cars and Japan remains covered in their tiny Kei cars. Even various African nations (in addition of the usual long-running suspects like South Africa and Egypt) are getting into car production now, with one approach being locally assembled Chinese knock-down kits (sadly, almost all of them are dishonestly advertised as entirely locally made) and the other indigenous 4x4s based on imported running gear.
What I'm saying is: The cheap car is alive and well, being both a firm staple of the internal combustion engine present as well as having already made long strides into the EV future. I have absolutely no idea why anyone would claim otherwise.

You are correct. And the Type 3 wasn’t either. The “Types” indicated a platform not a model. The type 1 qas the beetle, karmann Ghia, and Thing.
The type 2 was the bus, pickup, camper, van-and as you stated it was unibody.
The Type 3 shared the same wheelbase dimension as the Beetle but …a different suspension, subframe for the drivetrain, track, brakes, engine, transmission, fuel system, and was a considerably more refined car and a clear step up. It was offered in fastback, Notchback, squareback, and Karmann Ghia versions. The Ghia was very different than the type 1 version of the Ghia.
The type 4 was also a unibody car and had very little on common with the type 1, 2, or 3 other than being rear engine and air cooled. It was a further step up , above the type 3, and was the first civilian vw to offer four doors. It also added crumple zones and a completely new engine and a roomy interior but dumpy styling and mediocre performance. It was replaced by the Passat B1 (Dasher in the USA )

@@ARCNA442 "unimaginative and unreliable generic cars that no one really wants" is instead in Europe is "unimaginative and reliable generic cars that generic families drive around in" and *generic families* is a big market segment. You want spice? VAG khajiit has Audi on offer, if customer has coin.
That is another thing in Europe, I don't know whether Americans perceive. VW isn't VW. VW is VW, Seat, Skoda, Audi, Porsche .... .... .... Everyone knows and understand VW group is *a group* . It never falls or wins on single brand. Why don't Skoda offer X or why don't VW (badge) offer Y, because in the sales slice that segment belongs to Audi, Porsche or say Seat. "but but VW badge loses sales", doesn't matter. VW doesn't look at VW badge, VW looks at "does the group overall lose or win sales (while maintaining needed viable slice to each badge)".

Try to get your European mind around this: the golf is a total sales disaster in the US. In Europe it’s the car that saved VW. In North America, it’s the car that almost put them out of business here
There is a huge difference in perception of the VW brand in the US and Europe.

Don't let the angry noisy few get you down, or stop you from telling us about new cars and technology. You evidently make these videos because you're enthusiastic and excited by the subject you love, but you do so much more - you educate, entertain, you're a taste maker and an educated and authoritative voice in an increasingly subjective market.

Uh, a 6200lb electric minivan is not going to save VW. Neither are overpriced technical-terror cookie-cutter SUV electric vehicles. Sheesh, VW doesn't even want to sell the base Golf here anymore. WTH?!
VW needs to truly rediscover its roots; make simple, cheap, stylish high quality family of vehicle. Something different from the rest of the pack. I don't see that happening in the next couple of years. RIP VW.

My comment here probably won't be seen but I have to disagree with Jason's assertion that the I.D Buzz will "turn it around" for VW. I love the car. I want one. But I can't afford one. That's the problem. The I.D Buzz starts in the $50k range in the US and tops out in the 70's. That's not a peoples car. It's no Rabbit. It's not New Beetle. It's a Luxury EV wrapped in nostalgia. I hope it does well and maybe in a few years I can buy a used one for cheaper. But the car VW needed to bring over was the I.D 3. We desperately need cheap EV options in the US.

You do realize the average price of a new vehicle in the US is almost $49K, right? Plus this will likely qualify for a federal tax credit and state tax credits. There are already cheap EV options (Nissan Leaf, Mini Cooper, Hyundai Kona/Ioniq 5, 6, Chevy Bolt/Equinox. RWD Tesla Model 3) All these cars are well under the price of an average new car even before tax credits.

I think this looks great, but just like the new NSX, this lauch has been teased for far too long. Then to come out with a product with lackluster range in 2024, and it's high base price is laughable. Volkswagen gives me GM vibes were they have a great idea but then handicap the final product. I still haven't brought up the laughably bad infotainment infotainment system or haptic buttons.
