The real reason how chinese cars compete is they build a just good enough product for the masses while emphasising on features that users care. So some sacrifice has to be made, the car wont run that fast, it wont run that far, but in exchange the cars are cheapers, and profit margins are lower.

@@aeromtb2468 Yep, but the problem is: They won't because the leadership at VW is a bunch of ancient dinosaurs of the last millenium, that is who fired a very talented VW CEO called Deiss, he admired Tesla for being the market leader in BEVs, being the best of the best and emulating them. Creating a software defined car was what he wanted but then the rest of VW management rebelled because he was doing it right and they are doing it wrong and so he had to go. There were problems and bumps in the road and Germans suffer from a thing called German Angst, look it up, that is a real thing and so after one mistake they terminated the whole thing. Let's just say that the grey ancients at VW leadership don't even know what software is supposed to be. And they don't know how it relates to hardware and that will make sure that even with Rivians help, they will sabotage and terminate the project before it can take off, like with Deiss. If you have never done a thing, you have to allow for doing a lot more mistakes and still keep going. Germans are risk and mistake averse, they will stop it after 4 trials. If VW is smart, they will listen to the rivian engineers, they are from Silicon Valley, where the best Software engineers in the world come from.

Saying Rivian is losing $X per vehicle is very misleading. What it actually means is they have large fixed costs (like a manufacturing plant) they have to amortize over all the vehicles they sell. They simply haven’t (yet?) sold enough vehicles to reduce that cost to a manageable number per vehicle.
Rivian’s profitability will come (or not) with the success or failure of three higher volume R2 and R3 plus partnerships. Exactly the same as Tesla prior to the Model 3 and Model Y.

The loss per vehicle that people are talking about is mostly people misunderstanding fixed cost amortization. Gotta buy a big expensive factory (cost >$2 billion in Rivian's case) that costs a lot to build and operate (fixed costs) whether they sell one vehicle or a million. Each vehicle gets a percentage of those costs. Sell more vehicles and the fixed cost per vehicle shrinks. Rivian hasn't sold a lot of vehicles to date - $2Billion / 50,000 is $40k per vehicle. They'll need to sell a whole bunch more if they want to stay in business. Will they? I have no idea though I wish them well.

Rivian was not one or two programs away from bankruptcy. Yes, making vehicles is a huge capex, but Rivian's cash gives it a huge advantage. VW's offer is just a bridge to calm investors down while Rivian gets to profitability, hopefully sooner. VW needs Rivian more than the other. VW is going to have to get out of China, trim down drastically and finally come down to reality of making EVs which by then would have been too late. Many other legacy car manufacturers seem to do not even try in software-defined vehicles or quietly doing that behind closed doors (hi, Toyota!). The American consumer is becoming price sensitive on vehicles and you can see some pretty expensive repairs on vehicles with complex electronics. I’m not saying that we should continue to refine a simple vehicle without moving forward and making progress, I just think some of the functions being put in the vehicles, need an examination of whether that’s really what people want or just what the manufacturer is providing to try and become more profitable. I’m going to point to Jeep as being almost unaffordable although they have definitely increased and luxury. Not too many people are buying $70,000 wranglers to take them off road these days so they’re getting further and further away from what those vehicles were originally designed for and the niche that they fit in.

Well nowhere the first time VW would make deal to adapt tech from somewhere else. New start ups might guard their tech like jealous mice, but old big car makers know their main asset isn't tech. Tech you can buy easily, what you can't buy easily is global operations chains. Literally tens and tens of factories around the world, whose buildings costs were amortized decades ago. VWs asset is "It is one of the few companies in the world, that can make 10m+ vehicles per year *in practice* ". Cars don't get smaller the more you make them, so large scale scale is an actual achievement and asset.
So if Rivian has a good electronics architecture for network centric car (and network centric then allows it to be software centric, since you can send more complex messages over full network bus rather than just small CAN status messages), why wouldn't you buy it. They have the money, Rivian has the product. Khajit has wares, if you have coin. Decades of succesfull history means, VW has coin.
Buy the design, give the tech package it to internal factory or external electronics contractor with "we want 10 million of each of the boxes per year, thank you" and on buying 10 millions one can bargain mercilessly.

I have done a lot of things in my life however getting a VW in 2022 was the WORST decision. I suffer daily because of this decision. Software issues, Car making noises, Car deciding what it wants to do. Trust me they need to fix their current issues or shut down.

I recently did a couple of coast to coast road trips. Farms in Indiana were miles away from a gas station. Some farms had to resort to keeping their own gas reserves in tanks hoisted up in the air on wooden stilts. They could easily burn through 40 miles (round trip) just go fill up. Yet, every single one of those farms had electricity. Electric vehicles make even more sense for those rural communities. You don’t “wait and charge”, you charge overnight while you sleep.

Plus, Mahindra doesn't have products that will even qualify for the US market. Hyundai Tucson which is roughly equivalent to XUV700 is a compact car in US.
Mahindra doesn't know how to make big vehicles that work in the US

Rivian needs to come out with a kit model. You buy a basic truck; power steering, AC and heat, radio that connects to your phone, 4 wheels and seats.
You can add features as time goes along. Upgrades available at deal-ships or independent companies.
    Now affordable and upgradable

What Volkswagen needs to do is just simply rebrand a Rivian truck to a Scout Model. If.
Rivian was able to produce just about two hundred thousand more units then they stop losing money on each vehicle

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Pretty sure Rivian is too custom for VWs economies of scale. Like sure "it's a scout". Except you maybe go look at say the wheel hubs "hey these bearings are from the supplier of Traton (VW Trucks and Busses), heavy duty commercial van wheel bearings. These springs..... from VW supplier, the shocks, from a VW deal with a shock maker. This door lock, the same as in VW passenger cars". There is oogles of such "insignifican't, surely that doesn't cost much parts", where one can go "When VW buys 9 million door lock sets, it gets them cheaper than Rivian buying 200k door lock sets".
It's not just the production, but spares. Since if all VW doors use same lock core, well you don't have to stock the "Scout truck door lock", no you can just stock "the big size VW door lock" and maybe the "the small size VW door lock". Since company like VW... has to stock spares for decades.
