Girl! I got brave after watching this and dyed two huge pieces of Aida that I am so happy with! I am an Aida stitcher, I’ve tried other things but Aida is my preferred cloth.

Thank you for this tutorial. It is by far the easiest to follow that I have watched! I have always been wary about dying my aida, although I have painted some in the past. I am most definitely an aida-only girl! I've been a steady watcher since Christmas 2022, so only new, and this is the first time I have commented here on youtube!
This was very helpful. I like the mix one best, but like you, I'd like it just a bit lighter. I've been coffee staining my fabric. I love it, but it does give it a yellow tint.
Loved your tutorial on dyeing fabric. I've been wanting to try it. I have the fabric and Ritt dye in several colors. You took all the chemistry out of it and made it fun! I'm definitely going to take the plunge.
I just wing it. Start with small pieces and just experiment. Practice on cheap Aida. 😍

I loved your tutorial I am new to cross-stitch and there are so many things that I am learning. I did not know that you can wash Aida. I think it would be so much softer when you start stitching. Thank you so much
Absolutely you can wash Aida. If you like a softer feel. Washing takes the sizing off so the dye can absorb better. It does shrink a bit. But I am ok with that.

I love your videos. Rather than a perfectly 'choreographed' video, yours feel very warm. I can imagine sitting in your kitchen and watching you do the dying. I know I don't want dark fabric. I have two large charts to do for my boys...one on black and one on navy because you couldn't get black back then. Not thrilled.
I am not one for dark fabric either. Maybe just small projects. That is the feel I want in my videos. Just cozy friendly chatter.

I dye alot of fabric- majority linen. I never wash it,just wet it and scrunch it up for mottling. If you want more mottling,use smallest container you can. Linen will always be lighter than ut looks after you've rinsed and it dries. I try to air dry to barely damp and iron. Never have had any problems with dye coming off etc. It's so easy and fun but I have seen some videos of those that make it into rocket science. Get some dye stitchers and try it. Thanks for your sharing your way with us.
Thank you for the advice. I rarely dye linen because I buy it the color I want. I found on the Aida, the sizing stops the fabric from dying. And leaves speckles. Which is also fun and different look. 😍
That was fun to watch. I'm not sure if you realized that the Sandstone colour is a Rit Dyemore formula meant for synthetic fibers. Which is why it didn't take very quickly, it's not really meant for cotton. You still manged to get the colour you were looking for though so that's good. If you try to get create it again, next time try the Tan or Taupe All Purpose Rit, it might work better.

I have problems with the stiffness of Aida bothering my hands. Thank you for mentioning handwashing your Aida to get the starch out of the fabric.
It helps alot. Remember Aida will shrink when you wash it.
Hi Artie, i loved this video. I do my dying very similarly. If you haven’t seen this already, do a google search of “ Rit dye formulas PDF”. It’s a document that shows you colors and the “recipes” of Rit dye to get those colors. It’s a pretty handy document.
That sounds great. I will definitely look that up.
To get the mottled look ,I dripped full strength rit on my fabric that was too light wrinkling the fabric ,it really makes it botchy!

Thank you for the great information. I have never tried dyeing fabric but I plan to do a cross stitch of a saddle. The background is shown to be stitched. Well I would rather dye the fabric a color close to the the pattern background and not do all that stitching. The cobblestone color looks like it will work well.

i dyed fabric purple but even with rinsing it lots and laying it on a old towel so much dye ends up on the towel. Thats as far as I got because I was afraid that dye would get on my iron when ironing the fabric or would dye rub off on the floss etc. Lets face it I'm a chicken lol

I have never had an issue. I heat set either in the dryer or with a hot iron.

I know this is a dumb question but wondering if i can dye my white aida after i finished my project i don't like it on the white and its with silk tread
If you do a coffee tea dye it might work. But rit dye will change all your flosses to the dye color.

Sometimes you need to just jump in. I started with cheap Aida.
So what if you have to wash the project after stitching? Will that dye keep its color?
Anything that is hand dyed, should not be washed. Whether it is the fabric or the floss. You are at risk of the colors running.

I am not a very good linen stitcher. I do small stuff. My I am mostly on Aida.
I bought some Rit dye awhile ago to try dying some fabric, but haven't tried it yet. Does the dye/water solution stain your hands? Is the fabric colorfast after you dye it? Or would washing your finished project if you needed to be a problem?
Yes the dye will stain your hands. I usually wear gloves. Once I heat set it, I have never had a problem. I would be careful with darker colors.

I can sometime order it through my wholesale distributor that I get fabruc from.

All I ever do is rinse well, let it air dry and iron with a hot iron. Or if my dryer is empty, I will toss it in the dryer a bit. I rarely wash my stitched pieces.

Wet. I wash the sizing off my fabrics before I dip them.
