Although this video is 4 years old it is so helpful and full of tips for those of us who are just starting out trying to dye our own fabric. Loved it and am going to give it a go! Thanks again!
Wonderful video! I so enjoyed watching you dye and play with your stamps! I will enjoy doing some dyeing and your style of letting it be fun and experimenting with the outcome is exciting!! Thanks for sharing!! Carrie
Thanks Sara! I've dyed many projects after stitching. You do have to be a bit more careful if you've stitched with darker colors or over dyed threads. But I love the look! Good luck with yours. Hugs, Suzette
WONDERFUL TUTORIAL!!! Thank you for this valuable info 👍🏼. I’ve been struggling to find large pieces of fabric to my liking. Now I think I can do it myself😊
This was so fun to watch! I've never thought about aging fabric, though I use distress ink in my scrap booking all the time! I'd love to be entered in the drawing...thanks for sharing your knowledge and your pretties! 😊
Hello from Oklahoma. I learned so much watching your "priming up" tips and techniques! Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge with us. I love all of your Floss Tubes, too!
I'm so happy you did this video, Suzette! I bought a yard of 32ct Lugana that I wanted to try some prim dyeing techniques on! I would have NEVER thought to use vanilla with the coffee! And I LOVE Coffin Buzz and would love to win that fabric! (So, as you were making it I said to myself, "I hope she gives that away to someone!" HA! Can't wait to see what you do with the walnut crystals... mine are at the ready!
Thanks Trisha! I love the smell of coffee but the vanilla makes it smell even better! I've got you entered, good luck!! Can't wait to see your dyeing results too! Happy stitching, Suzette x
This is fantastic. I love how the pieces turned out and never would have thought of coffee mixed with vanilla. I especially love the piece with the coffee cup rings and stains using the distressed inks. Please enter me for the draw. I have a chart that I think would look great on that fabric. Take care. Happy stitching.
Thank you Pam! I love the smell of the vanilla added...almost made me want to take a sip! LOL I've entered you in...good luck! Happy stitching, Suzette x
Thank you for such a great tutorial. It is nice to be able to use craft supplies for more than one craft. I like the process and the look. I certainly want the chance to enter your give away.
Excellent tutorial. I found it very interesting how much the fabric qualities play in the dyeing process. I also love then pie keep and the chickens behind you. Primitives are my favorite so please include me in the drawing. Thanks.
Thanks for stopping by for a visit Mari and for your kind comments! I love playing with all the ways to dye fabric. It can be a bit addictive though so watch out! :) Happy stitching. Suzette x
Again, I so enjoyed watching you. Great tutorial! I tried dyeing some fabric to get the prim look but wasn't satisfied with it. Watching you and seeing your tips and tricks gives me the confidence to try again. THANK YOU 💕Also, I would love to be in the drawing of your beautiful piece of prim fabric.
Thanks Tina! If I'm not happy with the results, I just keep trying something different. I figure it can't hurt to try. I've got you entered, good luck! Happy stitching, Suzette x
Suzette what a great video! I love how all your techniques turned out. I have tried coffee dyeing on lugana but being a synthetic it did not leave much color. Thank you so much for all your different techniques. My favorite is the one you are giving away. I have used Rit to ice dye but need to follow your instructions and use it as a liquid dye - great results. I'd love to be entered for a chance to receive your beautiful fabric. On to your next video! Thank you so much for taking the time to share these techniques - really - thank you!
Amazing video, Suzette! I'm finally getting around to watching it because I wanted to pay close attention. I learned a lot and can't wait to try it. I've tried coffee and tea staining but didn't quite get the look I was going for. Thank you for your time sharing this!
I was so happy to finally see you put this video up. Love watching the processing and seeing it go from new to old age . Love all your work . You can start your own teaching classes In your area . I bet you could do this technique on a wall . Now that would be fun to watch for sure. ❤️👍🏻❤️ would love to be entered to win this fabric.
Very helpful and inspiring tutorial! I've done a lot of coffee dying of paper and now want to start on my stitching fabric! Thanks so much for sharing! Charlene
Thanks Charlene! It also had used it for paper and muslin for years. Don't know why it took me so long to think to use it on my cross stitch fabric. Have fun dyeing! Happy stitching, Suzette
Brilliant tutorial! I've always been too scared to try this but you explained it so well and simply :) I think I'll definitely be trying some of these methods in the near future! I'd love to be entered into your giveaway :) thank you again
Wonderful video & techniques! Can you get similar results just using the walnut ink crystals instead of using instant coffee (I'm allergic to it) or perhaps with that and tea? Also, I love that pie keep? that is behind you - just gorgeous!!
Hi Laura, thank you for your kind comments! I will have another video up in a couple of days using the walnut ink crystals. The look will be a bit different but still nice and prim. The pie keep is my most treasured piece that I own. It was handmade for me about 20 years ago and just gets better with age. Happy stitching, Suzette x
Wow I loved this tutorial!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us!! I think I will try some dyeing today!! I would love to be entered in the give away, thank you!
HI Suzette...loving the tutorials! thank you so much for taking the time to do them...I'm sure its much faster to go about your dyeing without an audience but I'm really loving seeing them all. I'd like to be entered in the giveaway...I saw Coffin Buzz on your MAYnia video and went right over to download the pattern. :) thanks again for all the videos!
Thank you so much for your video tutorial. Loved it, and think all of the dyed fabrics turned out really well - love the depth and character achieved. I am now inspired to give it a try myself. Please add me to the draw for the fabric. Would love to stitch the 'Coffin Buzz' design in time for Halloween.
Joanne, thank you for your kind comments! I hope you do give it a try as it is fairly easy and fun to see the results. You're added to the drawing...good luck! Happy stitching, Suzette x
omgosh! thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! i'm a new subscriber and just binge watched all of your videos. i've recently gotten back into cross stitching after a 20+ year hiatus and i don't have the funds to buy all the lovely hand dyed fabrics everyone is showing in their videos. i'm stuck with whatever i can get with a coupon at michael's or joann's. i actually have all the supplies you showed minus the rit dye. i'm going to give it a go on some of the boring white aida i have. i would love to be entered into your drawing for the piece you made! tfs:)
Thank you foundandmade! Welcome back to the land of this crazy obsession we call cross stitching! Good luck with your dyeing. It really is lots of fun if you don't get too hung up on expectations. Another TH-camr that has great videos that include some dyeing tutorials is Tricia@threeowlthreads. She uses some interesting things to dye her fabric. I've entered you into the giveaway. Good luck, Suzette x
I was amazed that you dyed a piece that was already stitched. I would like to try the coffee and vanilla on my piece but I used hand dyed thread. Do you know if it will work?
Hi melhni and thanks for watching. I don't think I would try it with hand dyed threads. For me it just wouldn't be worth the risk. :( I can't think of any other way to stain/dye your fabric after it's been stitched, I'm sorry.
Hi Suzette. I found your video fantastic. I have in my stash several Primitive Hare Charts but as yet I have not stitched even one for they need to be stitched on that distressed prim look fabric. I am hoping now after watching your video to try some dyeing myself. However I would love to be in the draw to win your masterclass piece of fabric. Could you please list the name of the Distress Ink Pad and the Polymer Stamps and where did you get the perspex stamp blocks.
Hi Lou, thank you for watching! I hope that you do get to try some dyeing. The Distress Ink color is Walnut Stain and the stamp set is from www.inkylicious.co.uk called Splodge & Splat. The acrylic blocks that I used were from the Tim Holtz line but any acrylic block will do. 123 Stitch carries a nice sized one for stamping. The Simon Says Stamp website has a nice variety as well. Hope this helps but please let me know if I can help further. Happy Stitching, Suzette x
I loved the concept of using instant coffee. The only concern I personally have is I would use it before stitching because I would be afraid the coffee would stain my floss and take away from the colors. That’s just me. Any thoughts? I will definitely try this idea in blanks.
Hi Denise, I have done it both ways and staining afterward does dull down some of the floss color. I've also carefully brushed stain around the stitched area. It really depends on the particular piece and what look you are trying to achieve. Happy stitching, Suzette
So will the coffee dye wash out real bad if put in the washer and dryer. Making a medieval shirt but I wanna make sure the dye isnt gonna fade real bad over use. Want it to last for years
Hi Jeremy. I think if you are using it on a garment, or anything that will be washed in a machine you may want to heat set it before washing. You can carefully do that in the oven at a low temp 200-250 degrees (watch closely and turn often) until dry. Or in a hot clothes dryer (this may stain the walls of your dryer though). Another option would be to dye it, let it dry and then heat set it by ironing it. I don't wash my stitched pieces so this is my best guess. Hope this helps. Suzette
Great video. The pieces look awesome! I especially like the color that the Rit tan dye made the Aida. I just recently bought a box of black tea to try dyeing some of the Aida that I have, & I was thinking about trying coffee dyeing as well. Your video gave me just the boost I was needing to go ahead & try it. I'm excited about trying both. Maybe sometime I will even buy some Rit to try. Thanks for doing this video. I do have 1 question: I know heat setting seals in the color, but since you didn't rinse any of them, is there any chance of the color rubbing off while stitching at all or fading over time? Thanks! 😊
Thank you Michelle! I hope that you do give it a go and so happy that my video has inspired you. I don't think I've ever rinsed my dyed pieces. And to date, I've not had any issues with color transfer or fading. I do keep my pieces out of direct sunlight though. With that being said, you could rinse and if it lightens up more than you want you can dunk it into the dye bath again ( kind of rinse and repeat thing). The other option might be to leave it in the dye a bit longer before rinsing. It really is a trial and error experiment. Happy stitching, Suzette x
Hi Jacqueline, Adding salt to the dye bath makes the fabric dye stronger because it forces the dye out of the water and into the fabric. It doesn't really set the dye. It just makes dye migrate out of the water and into the fabric. Hope that clears things up. Happy Stitching, Suzette

I'd love to be in the drawing. I have a lot of aida and fiddler cloth in my stash but I've been leery of dying it myself. I'd like to try getting some orange in for Halloween.
Hi! I just came across your video after searching for dyeing techniques on Google. Question--do you have any problem with dye transfer if you don't rinse your fabric? Loved this tutorial, and I'm going to try my hand at using your coffee crystals/vanilla dyeing technique! Thanks!
Hi Kelsey and welcome to my channel! I haven't to date had any issues with dye transfer. Even though I don't do a final rinse, I always heat set the dye. My most used heat setting method is with a dry hot iron. I place an old bath towel under the piece to collect the excess dye. Heating the fabric in the oven or microwave are other dye setting methods. I don't use the last two methods often as there is a greater risk of something horrible happening, but they do work. There isn't anything wrong with doing a final rinse if that gives you peace of mind. Have fun with the dyeing techniques!! Suzette
I'm looking forward to trying out tea dying now...thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this tutorial! Please enter me in the giveaway...thanks :)
I left my first comment before getting to the end of the video! Now I see that you are offering that beautiful piece of fabric as a giveaway! Please enter my name and thank you for your generosity both in giving your tutorial and your end product!
Lovely video, so interesting how the coffee and Rit dyes produce different shades on different fabrics. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing this with me, always wondered how it was achieved :). Please enter me for your generous giveaway :)
There is no way I would put all the hours of cross stitch in, then dye the fabric! I have dyed enough clothing to realize you never get consistent results. Therefore, it would be wise to dye your fabric first so you don't ruin your stitched piece. I did not like the spots using granulated coffee. They looked like grease spots. Same with the coffee ring...just not "my" cup of coffee. Tea gives a much warmer color although I did like the tan Rit dye.
BEST FABRIC DYEING TUTORIAL EVER!!!!! Can’t thank you enough 👍🎉
Although this video is 4 years old it is so helpful and full of tips for those of us who are just starting out trying to dye our own fabric. Loved it and am going to give it a go! Thanks again!

omgosh! thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! i'm a new subscriber and just binge watched all of your videos. i've recently gotten back into cross stitching after a 20+ year hiatus and i don't have the funds to buy all the lovely hand dyed fabrics everyone is showing in their videos. i'm stuck with whatever i can get with a coupon at michael's or joann's. i actually have all the supplies you showed minus the rit dye. i'm going to give it a go on some of the boring white aida i have. i would love to be entered into your drawing for the piece you made! tfs:)
Thank you foundandmade! Welcome back to the land of this crazy obsession we call cross stitching! Good luck with your dyeing. It really is lots of fun if you don't get too hung up on expectations.
You can add a bit of alcohol to prevent some molding in the refrigerator. Heard from a youtube video.:)
That's a great idea Michele! Thanks for sharing!
Do you have to worry about bugs eating the fabric since you don’t rinse the fabric afterwards ?
Asking because you’re using food products and leaving it on the fabric.
This was so fun to watch. I bet the smell is wonderful. Please enter me
Good idea honey!!!
Why adding salt?
Hi Jacqueline, Adding salt to the dye bath makes the fabric dye stronger because it forces the dye out of the water and into the fabric. It doesn't really set the dye. It just makes dye migrate out of the water and into the fabric. Hope that clears things up. Happy Stitching, Suzette
Thanks for the reply
I have just made my list of items to purchase to hopefully make masterpieces like you just did...many many thanks!!! Also please enter me in the drawing!
Thanks Diana! Good luck with your dyeing. You are entered! Happy Stitching, Suzette x
I'd love to be in the drawing. I have a lot of aida and fiddler cloth in my stash but I've been leery of dying it myself. I'd like to try getting some orange in for Halloween.
thank you!😊
Suzette
Fun tutorial - I enjoyed watching and would love to be entered in your giveaway. TFS
If you pour the mixed rit dye through a paper towel before you use it it will take the unresolved crystal out.

Please enter me in your give away
Zzz...
Thank you Cindy Decker for your thoughtful comment. If you don't like my video for fabric dyeing, you are certainly welcome to make one of your own.
