    I'll be honest, when i clicked on this I was expecting a poor version and for me to roll my eyes. As a teen growing up in the 80's this song was iconic to me, so let me just say YOU BLEW ME AWAY! WOW.. what an amazing instrumental. I could not find fault! You did the original justice. I officially dub you "The King of the 80s instrumentals".. keep it up! You got a new subscriber!

    Love it! This song holds nostalgic memories for me from the 80's (something to do with a middle school dance to it with the only girl I had a crush on!). TMI.
    Brilliantly produced and looks like having so much fun with that!
    I just bought an Arturia Keylab Essential and all the basic gear. I'm new to midi keyboards and I find these videos inspirational and enlightening. I'm also a sucker for 80's power ballads and used to recreate so many on the piano years ago. David Foster's stuff etc.
    I can't believe in 2021 you can have a working starter home studio for £400 or less. I'm excited.
    Since before my keyboard arrived I've been trying to DL free drum loops, instrument and sounds to try and hit the ground running but I don't know where to find use-able 80's material.
    I found a few linn samples, and Roland drums from the 80's, but I think it totals only about 20 sounds.
    Can you point me in the right direction?
    The power ballad snares in nothing's gonna stop us now is so memorable and it's that kind of gated reverb effect that everyone used back in 80's, that I'm looking for.
    Was going to invest in Komplete 13 but I've found plenty of free material that can help me get started but so much of it is hip hop or house which isn't my sound. I found Adsr manager to errrrm, manage them though.
    Just discovered your channel and I hope you keep sharing the fascinating content, thank you and apologies for the essay!

    • @juliancroot
      @juliancroot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the great message...I too love the 80s sound, and am also a fan of David Foster’s stuff.
      Re the gated reverb sound, I did a live show a couple of weeks ago (unfortunately now deleted) where I explained how I did that in my cover of Ivory Tower (from The Neverending Story).
      In short I just use Native Instruments Battery 4 in Komplete, add some reverb with Raum, a generic gate, and tweak the settings until it sounds right.
      I don't use much in the way of specific 80s VSTs except FM8 (a Yamaha DX7 emulator in Komplete) and Steinberg Retrologue that comes with Cubase.
      Thanks to your messages, I'm going to look into doing some David Foster stuff soon, maybe something by Chicago or Peter Cetera.

      @@juliancroot Hey, you're welcome and thank you for the insights.
      Incase you're interested and haven't seen it, if you TH-cam search 'Hitman David Foster and Friends Concert 2011'
      There's a broken down playlist of the live show. Peter Cetera and many others that David wrote for in the eighties join him to perform them again.
      I think there was also another hitman show in 2019 called Intimate evening with David Foster.
      Kenny G joins him for theme from St Elmo's fire in one of them, I think. Man in motion is another.
      Have a good one! 👍

    • @juliancroot

      Thanks. All the sounds except for the acoustic piano are VST instruments, not from a keyboard. The keyboards are just MIDI controllers.
      I layer sounds a lot so there's rarely a single sound I can point people towards in a particular song.
      Although the up-down arpeggio part you're referring to is a simple pluck sound I created myself in Steinberg's Retrologue 2 with a short ping-pong delay effect to make it sound like it was chasing itself.

      @@harolddasynth795 Its no secret what I use as I usually list them in the video description.
      Native Instruments FM8 and especially Steinberg's Retrologue2 are my go to VST synths. Drums usually come from Native Instruments Battery 4, and Refx Nexus shows up for things like guitar samples. I also use orchestral libraries where appropriate... Spitfire BBC, EastWest, and now Cubase includes Ikonica Sketch... all are great for orchestral stuff.

    For the intro, the bells portion, did you use a echo delay ? I'm trying to figure that out.

    • @juliancroot
      @juliancroot  ปีที่แล้ว

      No. What sounds like it could be a delay is me actually playing those notes because the notes are not repeated exactly. It may not be 'correct' but I just played what sounded the best to me at the time.
      I don't often use delay or programme arpeggiators, I prefer to just play stuff in real time...I feel it gives me more control.
      There's plenty of reverb on it though... indeed I put quite a bit of reverb on nearly everything in this one.

    • @althing
      @althing ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mate, that was all you? There was a right pan, and a left pan, and all those notes were you and not appregiated?! INSANE! Respect.
      Your work really helps, not easy finding the ghost notes, so thank you for the breakdowns in the video.
      Love your work.

      Yes, the panning I added in later.
      I just assigned the pan control to one of the knobs on my MIDI controller and recorded movement as automation in Cubase. That's pretty easy to do.

      @juliancroot  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure I can answer your question, could you be more specific?
      There are dozens of sounds and effects used in this production, and I usually blend many different sounds together for a single part to achieve what I'm aiming for.
