Yes, I experimented a lot with a separate kicker and downhaul. I'm not convinced the added complexity was worth it. This is a balanced lug with a 6:1 downhaul so with lots of downhaul the boom does not sky. The heavily reinforced luff is ahead of the downhaul and it keeps the boom in check. Hope that makes some kind of sense. I guess my point it that it's a significantly different setup than on a Laser.
So is this a planing hull? It sounds like it. I am considering building one, and wonder if one could rig a platform wide enough so two could sleep/camp aboard in quiet water. Thanks for sharing.
Definitely a planning hull. I've considered building a sleeping platform to span between the middle and aft seat. It would be cozy for two but doable. I documented the entire build of the boat on my blog. Start here if you're interested: planingaround.blogspot.com/2009/03/in-beginning-there-was-some-wood.html
Sorry for late reply. Sail is custom made by Doyle. You can get a very nice stock one for a Goat Island Skiff here: www.duckworksbbs.com/sails/rss/index.htm
Awesome vid, really going well. Can't wait to get my goat built!
