    So the fireball is the fastest?

    • @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva
      @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva  ปีที่แล้ว

      Defenitely, fireballs were faster and sailing a little more upwind than lasers and ther GIS.

    This is quite nice, just the quiet chuckle of the water slapping the hull below & the helms-person concentrating all the while. We read the captions on screen as if they were the thoughts of the race participant. Very nice not to have wind noise in the mic.!

    Excellent, very exciting race! Nicely covered with video, GPS, and textual commentary. Thanks!

      Thanks Chris. It was also fun for me to edit this video, like to do the race second time!

    I wonder how the race would change if the wind was 5-10 knots higher? Not having a spar on the luff.

      Hi Mark, I've never tested the GIS vs Lasers in strong winds, but I'm suspect the Lasers will perform better than the GIS. Lasers are pure racing dinghies while the GIS is a kind of all round boat. The GIS will need to reef, loosing some power. Also the sail of the laser will be probably most efficient. Just my thinking. Thanks for the visit!

      That makes sense, thanks!

    That's fantastic. Home build boat with lug rig as fest as laser. Congrats.

    Would putting a slightly bigger sail on the GIS make it as fast as a Laser?

    May be it is the 5th time I've seen this race. ..;I am building one GIS and also playing regatta on Dragon and IRC .. one question - Start , then you tack and just after tack..disaster . But this disaster look like you've no speed (slow tack as I see) - Do you think your heading was better because you reach a rise, or just because to give speed and then Hull shape make the job to point ?

    • @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva
      @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Eric, yes, "disaster".. I still don't know exactly what happened: the tack was slow and maybe the wind dropped or changed a little in direction.. I don't know. Or much probably it was purely my mistake in pointing. Anyway, the boat is very light, with a very flat bottom and powered by 10 m2 of sail. Also note that the lug sail has a lot of surface at the top, so in case of wind blowing stronger "high" on the water, it makes a difference with Marconi rig.

    Downwind, centerboard up?

    • @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva
      @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, at downwind there's no need for a deep centerboard. It just increase the friction with the water. Thank you for the visit!

    • @MikStorer
      @MikStorer ปีที่แล้ว

      Though if there are waves big enough to surf then more centreboard is useful. Maybe 1/3 up for the big Goat Island Skiff board. But light winds and smooth water like this ... board up as surfing is not a possibility.

    Nice job! We sail Lasers at the local club here and I'm impressed that a dinghy that you can cruise in like yours is comparable on the race course! I'm working on restoring a Finn class even though I'll be much too light to ever be able to sail it to its full potential. Regards from Nouvelle Zélandia.

    • @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva
      @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brett. I was surprised too. But the GIS is a very light boat a carry a lot of sail. I'm sure in much strong wind the laser will take advantage from the capacity to keep a perfect control. Finn is a great stuff. I never sailed one but I once I saw one in action.. fantastic! All the best with your restoring project.

    For single handed racing, a window low in the sail would enable you keep a better sight of your opponents; also a longer tiller (thus a more effective angle between tiller and extension) would help smoother sailing to windward. Otherwise, well done.

    • @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva
      @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martin, that's very true: a window in the sail would help a lot in these boats crossings. The tiller is quite OK. Thanks for the visit. Hey, you have a lovely ukuleles band! ;-)

    haha .. .this is wonderful. I was getting tense in all the places I normally get tense when racing! Virtual reality - at least emotionally!

    • @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva
      @EnricoFranconiPolisportiva  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My first intention was to publish the gopro fotage with some music. Then I thought I had the gps track to combine.. and I had to learn how to do it. Then came the coundown and the comments.. so at the end came like virtual regatta! Think that I could even add the boat speed on a clock gauge (available from the gps file), but then ..what a mess!! :-)

      Anyway this shows how a GIS performs compared to Laser and Fireball. Mira also won against two Flying Junior. Of course it is limited to this specific wind-wave conditions. And moreover is just one race.

    • @MikStorer
      @MikStorer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This way is much better. The racers and ex racers will appreciate it!
      In a way I miss your commentary in Italian and the english feeling like a subtitle.

      Yes .. have been having a big discussion on the Duckworks Group on Facebook. This resolves the question. That lugs have OK performance.

    • @OmarLemusTactic
      @OmarLemusTactic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree Michael, this was nerve wracking, it is so interesting that the lug sail is very efficient downwind due to its size.
