The start of your video makes me realise how spoiled I am living in Australia, I see these birds in the wild every day, sometimes they come down to feed in our yard. They are stunning, and very playful birds. Did you know the females have pinkish-red eyes and the males dark eyes? Very nice tutorial, the dark indigo in the shadows is exactly what I would have used too. It really packs a punch on the shadows and ties in well.
Finally got to sit down & watch ! 🙄 Aww it’s beautiful ( as always) thanks for this Amie.......hubby breeds birds & is always asking me to draw them, but it scares me a bit lol. He breeds Rosellas, Kakariki, pennants, & Parrotlets. I’ve drawn ‘Frankie’ (MY little parrotlet) & a budgie, but never attempted a very bright bird. Thanks Twinny 😜
Amie! Wonderful video and drawing! I believe that you placed the bird perfectly and the use of the negative space creates a truly dynamic pose! I do have a more technical question? You seldom use a background color or pattern in your drawings, is there no easier way to create a gradient or flat wash of color with pencils? I tried to use the white of the paper in a piece in college but the instructor said it I was wasting an opportunity to influence the viewer and he would not allow an unfinished painting to leave one of his classes! I enjoy that your brave enough to use the white of the paper! I believe you have given us so many wonderful tips and instruction with this video, I truly enjoyed it, thanks!
I tend to not use a background, purely because I'm lazy and the thought of adding background scares me XD Certain pieces I will add a bit of context in the way of rocks, ice of leaves, but rarely do a full background. I've also left the paper white, probably also because I used to take pet portrait commissions and backgrounds weren't often needed or wanted to show the context of the drawing, if that makes sense? I will challenge myself more and start adding background!

I hope to learn a bit more about color pencils, it has been quite a long time since I have used regular color pencils, I have had watercolor pencils for years and I always used them even for a color pencil drawing.
