Visiting Alaska after 20 years

  • In 2020 I turned 60 years old and to celebrate myself and several friends where going to do an Alaskan cruise , it was all booked and paid for and the excitement was building. Then the pandemic struck and everything got cancelled but my friends are a determined bunch and decided a belated birthday cruise was in order.
2023 was the year I returned to Alaska and I took you with me as much as possible.
NOTE: Because I was filming in different locations and weather conditions the volume varies throughout the video, I've done my best to edit out most of the background noise but there is only so much I can do.
I hope you enjoy the taster of Alaska with me.
    Happy Crafting

    💖 WOW! 💖
The towns remind me very much of some of the old mining towns in Colorado that haven't been commercialized (some might say exploited) by an adjacent ski resort (ex. Leadville). Similar architecture, main street - even the old coal fired train is similar to one in Breckenridge. Loved the totems & especially the quilt store! Thanks for taking us along with you - glad you got some much needed rest & recharging!!

Thats how I felt when I took a cruise to the Caribbean Islands and I found St.Thomas with all the commercialism. I loved The Dominican Republic though. Many complained on the ship about porting there but I saw what I went for...to see islands, not bars, jewelry stores, etc... where we were in the Dominican was more primitive and it was wonderful...my opinion.

Thank you for taking us along. It has been over 20 years since I was in Alaska as well. I was quite taken back at how much Glacier Bay has changed. It made me quite sad to see what global warming had done. 😢

Thanks for taking us along. I was in Alaska in 2006 ( 6 weeks: Anchorage to Fairbanks and back) and 2009 ( 4 weeks:Kenia Penninsula). I enjoyed the trips and was glad to not encounter crowds ( except Skagway....3 cruise ships ' released " their passengers all at once..) I'd like to go back but we probably won't go. Too expensive and there are many other places to explore. I live in central BC and we travel all over Canada and some places in the states, in our motorhome. Great way to travel, now that we are retired for 10 years. I am sure your time was very relaxing and worthwhile. Sandi

I would never go to Alaska, but Svalbard, an archipelago in
Norway, is a good place to experience unspoiled nature on a cruise. Glaciers, fjords, mountains, polar bears, whales, reindeer, snowmobile tours, northern lights. January to April is the high season, but cruise season is mainly in the Summer. Cecelia Blomdahl has a great TH-cam channel showing some of Svalbard, and I am planning to take a cruise around Svalbard in 2025.

thank you for the tour. I went 1 year ago, no whales for me, but it was gorgeous. 6 years ago we saw some orcas and otters and a bear on the cliffs in the fjord. Commercialization is a problem, I am afraid to go back to Hawaii it was in 1979. So sorry about Maui, I hope the developers don't ruin it. Thanks for the quilt shop show, I am an art quilter and appreciated it.

Excellent!! In 1965 at the ripe old age of 8 years old, we went mostly where my Dad worked as a news photographer after WWII. He lived in Fairbanks and Anchorage and traveled wherever the news sent him. My older brother and sister were born in Alaska. When it was getting close to my time to arrive, Mom and Dad couldn't find someone to watch the older 2 so they moved back to Michigan. On our trip to Alaska, Dad took us to a glacier lake on or near Hope Mountain. The water looked like it was only a few inches deep, but Dad said it was miles deep. . .so pure and clear. Mostly I remember climbing mountains and playing in the ice cold lakes. Your video takes me back. . .Thank You from the bottom of my heart!!

Thank you so very much. My brother lived in Alaska for over 30 years and we were never able to afford the trip. He was a veterinarian and flew everywhere so we got to see lots of pics and heard lots of stories. He died 3 years ago and now my mobility would make it a difficult journey. He's not there anyway. So you have filled my desire to see Alaska and you've done a marvrlous job. Thank you, more than you can imagine. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Very small ports and communities, art shops, museums, etc. I'm sorry you went where you did...it didn't look very pleasant for you😢. I live on the Kenai Peninsula, and it's gorgeous here! Ceri, thank you for much for sharing your trip, your stories from both the past and from this trip. The scenery was so beautiful! I agree with you about commercialism coming in and changing things so much. I live in a beautiful area but it has changed a lot. I hear people, who haven't been here in years, say it's not the same and they won't be back. BTW, when you were in Skagway did you see the "Puppy Bus?" It's a bus that picks up dogs and takes them on hikes. The dogs get buckled into to their seats and off they go. It's too cute. (Mo Mountain Mutts.)

Thank you for sharing very beautiful .unfortunately tourism has a lot to answer for .I hope going forward we can balance touring and nature in such a way that they both survive for future generations to experience.

Thanks for this. My friend (born and lived her entire life in Southern California) did an Alaskan cruise and had a terrible adventure. This year she spent a month in Ireland and southern England and is going to move there next year. You had an entirely different experience than she did. I’ve enjoyed your trip!

What a gracious soul you are Ceri to share your time in Alaska with us -- I've never been but have always wanted to and you've shown why I should absolutely do it if I can before leaving this world. I'll probably try to do some kind of alternative to the cruises though :) So glad you got to do it after all, happy belated birthday ❤

That happened with me and Yosemite. First time I went, spectacular. Some years later, after a drought, I was so disappointed.

I’ve not been to Yosemite for thirty years I’d dread to go back.

My best friend’s sister lives in Alaska , in the area where the Iditarod used to begin, but it doesn’t anymore because of climate change. And her grandmother lives in Wasilla now. Grandma used to own a saloon where the miners came in the early 1900s. It certainly has changed, but both my friends sister loves being there. Being from Wales, I’m sure the weather doesn’t make you so miserable lol - love seeing your updates. Take care! Thanks for sharing 😊

Fascinating I’d not heard the race had ended. I be there’s stories to be told about owning the saloon. Thank you

I was afraid to watch this video... so sad what Alaska has become. There are just too many people wanting to get away, too. Maybe Nome and Kotzebue are still about the same. But don't we sometimes wish some things wouldn't change? Thank you so much for taking us with you. ❤

My favorite place on earth! I lived up there in Palmer and then in Juneau in the 90’s. I live in Alabama these days. Now that my kids are all grown and living their best lives and I’m a widow… I’m thinking about moving back. 🤔❤️

i miss Alaska so much! I was there more than once on the royal princess! I probably saw you perform. I just wanna see old days when they outlawed all the commercial businesses. But I know they need the money from it. Maybe we just have to take an interior excursion to see the real real Alaska. Anyway it’s been a while since I’ve been there and I remember last time I went i actually noticed, with the naked eye,how much the glaciers had receded. I just pray that all the Alaskans stay safe from global warming or climate change or whatever you wanna call it and thank you for sharing Ceri!

Oh Ceri, you may not remember about my loosing my son 1 year ago in may 9ff 2022. My daughter-in-law scattered my son's ashes in Alaska on their cruise. I wonder if you guys were on the same cruise. I'll check. I hope you had a great time. Thanks for sharing.Alaska was a place Fred wanted to visit.
