You are absolutely correct. The interviewer is very intelligent, respectful and knowledgeable. This was an interesting, fun interview. And as you said quality wise it was excellent.
Pretty hard to interrupt when Tom talks without taking a breath. I counted: only seven breaths taken the entire interview! Tom's a great actor, but I assume it's perhaps the innate narcissism within him that convinces him he's the most important person in the room.
What a really genuine man, it was great to hear about his life, he was so interesting to listen to, I could have happily listened for so much longer, 😁
Love this interview. My brother, at 64, just got a job as a intern plumber. He has never been happier. He will be a certified plumber in 3 years. After making well over 6 figures every year working in the salt (diamond) mines in northern Canada, he just got divorced, he didn't want to retire. So I call my best friend from high school, who has a plumbing company, and he says if your brother wants a job I am in. Turns out my old brother is the best employee he has ever had. Age is relative. As is acting.
Awesome story...thanks for sharing! I've worked in the Atlantic City casino industry for over forty years and I've never understood how older people can sit in front of a slot machine for hours on end every week and just mindlessly tapping the screen. My first thought is they need to find a hobby or simply start learning something new to keep their mind engaged. Your older brother has taken the correct path.

When I first arrived in Hollywood, I was blessed to work as assistant to Larry Brezner. Larry was a partner in the management company of Rollins, Joffe and Morra. At that time, RJMB was the most respected and revered management company for comedians.Their list of talent included Woody Allen, Robert Klein, Dick Cavett, David Letterman , Michael Richards and a young comedian named Robin Williams. Larry Brezner discovered Robin Williams. They were a wonderful group of people . The 3 years I worked there were incredible . ( Fear not, I’m getting to the Tom Hanks story…) Eventually, I was promoted to associate producer and spent 20 yrs working on network sitcoms , hour long series and MOWs. Tom Hanks was doing Bosom Buddies at Paramount where we had offices for a while. Larry was dying to speak with Tom so a meeting was set and he came over during a break in shooting. Tom Hanks was just getting a name for himself and, truthfully, some of the office staff didn’t know who he was. What Larry really wanted was to manage Tom . When the meeting ended, Tom ( A very gracious and respectful young man ) left and, Larry was crestfallen. Hanks had a manager and felt he should be loyal to him, even though RJMB could have taken this barely known actor on a not so hot at the time, sitcom and probably make him a big name. Larry still respected his loyalty even if he lost a client . What I will never forget is what he said after Tom left. “ There goes a guy who is going to be one of the biggest stars this business has ever known. He can do anything. That is an actor who can and will play anything. Comedy, Drama. You name it. He’ll probably be a producer , director as well. He can do it all !! I guess this is more of a tribute to Larry than Tom ( Larry died a few years ago ) . Larry hated losing Tom Hanks as a client but, he sure did recognize talent … and ethics and loyalty, in a town that is often short on both. Here’s to Tom Hanks and his wealth of talent and his sense of loyalty and ethics that , from what I hear are still very much in tact. And, to Larry Brezner who predicted the future career of Tom Hanks in 1980. God bless them both.
But what’s with Weinstein association. This guy would have pushed Tom into any kind of luid act for the ability to get a movie done. I see his woke buddies and all I see is another woke man without ethics who’s acting all the time. Who is he? Just another phoney actor in Hollywood. No place for Hanks. He’s an embarrassment!
Amazing interview - thoroughly enjoyed it. Like many others I've seen practically every one of Tom's movies over the years...and my favorite one was Nothing In Common (Jackie Gleasons's last movie). Tom's character in that was energy personified - great comedic writing and timing. It was hilarious for the first half...then shifted gears and got very serious in the second half. It really showcased Tom's versatility. There were so many great one-liners that have stuck in my head after watching it half a dozen times that I often use them even today. Tom Hanks is just one of those rare actors that when you see his name attached to a film you're compelled to check it out no matter what. But what really fascinated me about this interview was when he talked about his upbringing and constantly moving. Likewise, I went to 13 different schools over the years...my parents constantly moved all over the country. So I really identified with him when he described what the experience was like constantly being the 'new kid' and how the slate was cleared each time he moved and started fresh.

Thanks for the interview Mr. Hanks. I am very interested in how you got started. My wife and I have enjoyed your movies. If Tom Hanks is in a movie, we'll watch it. He's got good taste in roles.
Excellent! Tom Hanks has become such an integral part of our lives. He nailed Tom Parker - I absolutely came away understanding that he was a promoter, not a manager…. and definitely a Carny!
Rita is fantastic. She put her career on hold to raise their kids while Tom acted. She has a great sense of humour which is definately a plus in an actors marriage. No ego also helps.
Great interview. Thanks so much, Guy. You’re especially good at getting out of the way and letting Tom just talk. Obviously, you could’ve talked the whole two hours about Tom Hanks-and fascinatingly so-you clearly love the guy and did all the research. So it must have been hard to stay as silent as you did. You’re like DiMaggio and Tom. You made it look easy. Now I can imagine how much it isn’t. Thank you.
Exactly. So many interviewers can't wait to cut the interviewee off & I feel frustrated I didn't get to hear the end of the thought or story. Bill Maher on his podcast is especially bad at stepping on others thoughts.
@@EricAlexander-ry7ks it takes an interviewer who has a healthy ego to realize that the interviewee is the star of the program, and that the interviewer is there to make that star shine. Guy excels at this.
About halfway through I began to worry if Tom Hanks would fret at you not having your questions off pat and ready to launch. And I began to notice how well that fitted. He seemed to appreciate you were both working together. It gave an extra flavour to the whole thing.
Like he says you can have 10 kids from same parents & all of them have a different take on their childhood. Each child born has different gifts & sensitivities. As the oldest of 5 siblings & a lot of cousins my same age growing up with I know this. 😉 Great Interview 👍 & great story telling of one's life by Tom.
Great to hear about his growing up years; here is a fellow who had every reason to become depressed from moving so much, yet he & his siblings made the best of it and entertained one another. I love this interview where he recounts in his own words his life, his career, various movies ... very entertaining.
I was 3 yo at the end of WWII and we all moved all the time. I have since learned that the reason was the several million men that returned, with no -real plans for the most part. During those years we lived in motels, rooming houses/ boarding houses and later apartments and finally our own home. It was just life!
That Joe De Maggio reference was endearing. Priceless actually and reminds of the song ` you know it dont come easy ' . Not the title but definitely poignant lyric of the Beatles tune 🙂
I can't think of a better way to spend two hours. Loved every minute of this interview from start to finish. Thanks so much for sharing all these wonderful stories. ❤
WHAT A DELIGHTFUL CONVERSATION! I love your work, Mr. Tom! Thanks for all the wonderful movie memories and for our family’s favorite quotes which we still use on a regular basis. ❤️🙏🏼❤️
I have loved Tom since BIG. I adored watching him bc he becomes the charater but his true personality still shines through. In Forrest Gump he was Forrest right through the movie - no Tom Hanks.
Lovely interview. Could listen to Tom tell stories all day long! Had hoped he would mention "Joe and the Volcano", one of my favorites. Our family watched it over and over. Not as often as Forrest Gump, but a lot. Thanks, Tom, for being who you are.
This message was right on target. After 54 years of accepting less than loving behavior from a man who at various times was a lover and a friend, I'm going to follow your advice. Many thanks ❤
I was 8 or 9 when Bosom Buddies aired as a rerun on NBC I think. I had no idea what a rerun was. I remember watching every week with my dad and laughing so much. Tom Hanks was my first celebrity crush! When the final season ended I asked my dad when it was coming on again and he told me we had been watching reruns and that the show had been canceled. I had no idea that was even a thing and I was crushed! 🤣 I remember when I heard Splash was coming out I advised my dad that there was no debate of taking me to the theater to see it! 40 years later I'm still crushing on Mr. Hanks and waiting for any movie with him in it. I also was a latch key kid at 5. No one even understands the depth of that title. Tom Hanks you are a national treasure! ❤✌
I am a little older than you are, I think I saw it new but I always thought Henry was cute one! lol. I can really relate to the lonely kid part, my family was composed of MASH, Taxi, & Barney Miller! & yes I had a crush on Jim Ignatalski, Detective Detrick, and Hawk Eye Pierce!
Thank you for this interview it’s perfection! Charlie Wilson’s War. I was marginally acquainted with Charlie Wilson and Tom Hanks played him so well, I forgot it wasn’t a documentary.
A fantastic Interview, had me hooked from start to finish. How down to earth and open Tom is, such a natural honest genuine man. I've always admired Toms acting ability but his integrity and sincereity speaks volumnes. This interview flowed beautifully. Thank you so much Guy. P.S Tom looks great in a hat, especially in The Green Mile.
@@aWomanFreed no kidding. sorry but the ppl commenting here are delusional. I really hope Tom Hanks and the rest of the general public get found out for who they really are!
Tom Hanks is not just great at his craft in front of the camera , he's great at storytelling when it's one on one . That is a talent that has been somewhat lost over time . I really enjoy Mr. Tom Hanks because I believe him while watching any movie he is in and in interviews such as this , I find myself believing In the real Tom. Guy Raz is a wonderful ( respectful ) interviewer . Excellent podcast - well done .
Tom Hanks has always been at the top of my list for people you would invite to dinner. After this interview, I really have him at the top of my list. Great interview of a great entertainer. Why wasn't I lucky enough to see him on the subway when I lived in NYC?
I don't know if Mr. Hanks will ever see this comment, but I appreciate more than anything his remarks on equipoise. I've thought for years that stage acting is most comparable to sports. That is to say that one has to be there in that moment or it is lost forever - to the player as much as to the viewer. And "being there" is all the rest of what he's said about knowing the text, bringing something new and particular to each moment, getting over self-consciousness, and loving the work. Thank you both for a wonderful insightful interview.
Carny logic maintains that once one finds a winning formula, one sticks with it until it no longer is profitable. That's why Colonel had Elvis doing the same, "safe" movies, touring nonstop with the same show content, never taking a big risk like touring outside The United States and refusing to be seen "free" on television. Elvis ended up on a creative treadmill that, while it made him rich, stifled his artistic spirit . Elvis died of drugs, overeating and boredom.
Thank you for this description of Carny logic. It makes sense and illustrates (for those of us who haven’t yet seen the movie) even more the poignancy of Elvis’s situation.
Thank you very much for this interview of Tom Hanks. He is my favourite US actor (next to Clint Eastwood) and I love his early movies and his tv show (Splash, Bachelor's Party, The Man with the red shoe, Big, Bosom Buddies) and of course Sony and Madison.
This was a great interview! Tom Hanks isn’t just a “pretty face” and with 40 years under his belt he’s fully cognizant of his craft and his role in it! My favorite scene of his is in Forest Gump when he learns about having a son. I would love to know how he decided to play that scene! Watching his eyes in that scene is truly amazing as Forest realizes the truth, it’s truly remarkable the emotions he portrayed with his just his eyes. Tom is playing his part really well for his book tour now!
Amazing to travel down the road from my childhood to well into mid life .. thankyou Tom for the joy and gutt belly laughs. Tears and reflection. Great interview. Xx
I watched this interview twice, and it does not disappoint. Mr Hanks is a credit to his profession. He seems completely himself and totally natural. It's wonderful that his Ego has not taken over. I can listen to him all day, and he teaches lessons through his stories.. He also goes into impressions very quickly, and he's funny. The Interviewer is terrific, and I so appreciate his enthusiasm, and he does not interrupt. It's a sign of respect. 😊

Amazing interview! Tom Hanks was so open and generous with his time and thoughts. What a great storyteller, too. You feel like you’re there. Thank you!
I could listen to him for hours on end… he is a genuine and what I believe is an authentic human being.
Bwahahahahaha!!! U wanna see “authentic” Tom Hanks?? Google how he’s a pedophile
Brilliant interview. Do glad i got to hear this.
This is the best, informative, enjoyable vlog I've ever watched. Excellent.
Thanks for the interview Mr. Hanks. I am very interested in how you got started.
My wife and I have enjoyed your movies. If Tom Hanks is in a movie, we'll watch it. He's got good taste in roles.
Thank you for having Tom Hanks on your show. A gifted and talented actor. It was amazing to hear about his childhood. As usual I am late to the party.
Excellent! Tom Hanks has become such an integral part of our lives. He nailed Tom Parker - I absolutely came away understanding that he was a promoter, not a manager…. and definitely a Carny!

This is one of the most fascinating, thoroughly executed interviews ever done. Plus, Tom Hanks is the willing interviewee, what could be better?
Rita is fantastic. She put her career on hold to raise their kids while Tom acted. She has a great sense of humour which is definately a plus in an actors marriage. No ego also helps.
Pedo Tom! EVIL!
That's as close as I'll ever come to a conversation with Tom Hanks so thank you very much. 👍
Like he says you can have 10 kids from same parents & all of them have a different take on their childhood. Each child born has different gifts & sensitivities.
As the oldest of 5 siblings & a lot of cousins my same age growing up with I know this. 😉
Great Interview 👍 & great story telling of one's life by Tom.
Probably the best interview I’ve ever watched! It was honest, not predictable, not trite, and worth what little time that I have left.
What a GREAT conversation!!
one time when he was over here (britain) he was on a radio program called desert island discs
that was another great interview..
recommend. 🙂 x
Tom Hank's Forrest Gump made me a huge fan of all the movies he acted, created and produced. ❤
Thank you! I have never enjoyed an interview more.
Ditto!
Fascinating conversation!
What a fantastic interview. I truly wish more interviewers could learn from this exemplar. A chance to know more of the treasure Tom Hanks.
Well done ! So wonderful having him talk to us as honestly as any friend ! Wonderful :)

Lovely interview. Could listen to Tom tell stories all day long! Had hoped he would mention "Joe and the Volcano", one of my favorites. Our family watched it over and over. Not as often as Forrest Gump, but a lot.
Thanks, Tom, for being who you are.
Tom I salute you for caring about working so tirelessly to Entertain us for 40 years! ❤ You are in our hearts forever 🎉

This message was right on target. After 54 years of accepting less than loving behavior from a man who at various times was a lover and a friend, I'm going to follow your advice. Many thanks ❤
Loved the Tom Hanks interview great job👍

Mr. Hanks and Mr. Raz made this seem like a master class.
Wonderful interview! Great questions and I also appreciate how much Tom Hanks just loves sharing about the craft of acting for him.
Thank you so much for your love❤️and support for me and my career🤓I appreciate your support and warm comments✊ god bless you and stay safe❤️
Utterly, brilliant! Particularly loved his quote: “Acting is the battle of self-consciousness! “ That’s why he’s so beloved! Truth. 👏❤️
This interview with Tom Hanks does a deep dive into how he started, what changed his life, and where he is today. Fantastic!
Delightful interview. Tom Hanks, I love that thing you do!
Thank you for this interview it’s perfection! Charlie Wilson’s War. I was marginally acquainted with Charlie Wilson and Tom Hanks played him so well, I forgot it wasn’t a documentary.
Tom Hanks is a great actor, and a real nice human being.
Thanks for all the great roles.
Thank you so much for your love❤️and support for me and my career🤓I appreciate your support and warm comments✊ god bless you and stay safe❤️

Loved watching this. What a wonderful person Tom is.
Ha! U don’t know ANYTHING about him
@@aWomanFreed no kidding. sorry but the ppl commenting here are delusional. I really hope Tom Hanks and the rest of the general public get found out for who they really are!
I love listening to him talk.
He's resilient.

@@TomHanks-km6vd as if
I don't know if Mr.
The most important thing in acting is honesty. If you can fake that, you've got it made.
George Burns
The whole industry is based on playing pretend and make believe. Honesty? lmao
@@notsocrates9529 Foe those with a sense of humor, that is known as a joke!
@@badpuppy09 Right, but it's all fake. That is not funny nor clever.
fake honesty is an oxymoron.
@@laurakazimir1712 The movie is very well made and acted but is mostly fiction.
He did Elvis Presley 😭 and your advice is accurate because in God's country we love American artists 🎨🎭 will never go out of style and music 🎶🥇🏆🌹🌻🎈.🎉
They did the same safe formula because if the colonel left the USA, he could never get back in. He stifled Elvis.
Hide the children.
Thank you very much for this interview of Tom Hanks. He is my favourite US actor (next to Clint Eastwood) and I love his early movies and his tv show (Splash, Bachelor's Party, The Man with the red shoe, Big, Bosom Buddies) and of course Sony and Madison.
You forgot Family Ties.
@@kerriecarr6287 I didn't like The bonfire of desires and Joe Versus the Volcano
Tom Hanks love all your movies you’re great actor
Love Tom Hanks in his movies, The Money Pit, The Burbs, Got Mail and the list goes on. We need more actors like him. also enjoy his son's acting.
There are 2 - 3 commencement speeches Tom did posted on youtube. They are astounding. Hope you'll get to see them! Tom is absolutely wonderful!
@@angelabluebird609 Thanks Angela, I'll check them out!
Oh Money Pit is one of my favorites.
@marylhere the rug scene still makes me laugh
PLEASE DO A PART 2 WITH TOM!!❤
This was a great interview! Tom Hanks isn’t just a “pretty face” and with 40 years under his belt he’s fully cognizant of his craft and his role in it! My favorite scene of his is in Forest Gump when he learns about having a son. I would love to know how he decided to play that scene! Watching his eyes in that scene is truly amazing as Forest realizes the truth, it’s truly remarkable the emotions he portrayed with his just his eyes. Tom is playing his part really well for his book tour now!
Great interview, he's one of my all time favorite actors. And seems to be a down to earth guy.
Well done, what a guy! Thank you for sharing this interview…
What a great interview! I love Tom Hanks!
“Who does Twelfth Night in high school?!” Me! I was a high-school drama teacher for 20 years. I directed Twelfth Night and Midsummer each twice at two different schools; also, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Much Ado About Nothing. The kids were fabulous!
👏👏
Brilliant interview. Tom...enormous wisdom. I can't pick a favourite film but would love to see you in a Shakespeare play.
what an Icon. xx
This is so great. All actors and writers and directors should do a long form interview like this. Of course, not everyone is Tom Hank’s, but…
I love how he imitates Ron Howard so naturally almost bringing Ron into the interview in a funny way but with great love and respect.🙏💕🙏💕🙏💕
