Dragonfly Fossils inspired by Kylie Coo Studio

  • Very often I see a piece of art that inspires me to take that concept in a new direction that reflects my own style, Kylie Coo published a wonderful video using P.M. Artist Studio dragonfly masks and I just had to have a go.
I must admit the end result was not exactly how I envisioned it but I still wanted to publish my video as I like to keep things real and show you how things really develop and how to adapt and amend as an art piece comes together. Mainly the colouring was the one factor I wasn’t entirely happy with, I wish I’d gone with the lighter card behind the fern and the sandstone colouration I was hoping for just became to dark. So I then adapted the whole piece to be more dramatic with the addition of teal.
The original video was two hours long so I had to do some serious editing to reduce it to the length which I thought was acceptable, hopefully my editing didn’t disturb the flow of the video to much and no vital parts of the process were lost in the edit.

Hi Ceri - I absolutely love your page and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of watching you create it. I am honoured that a piece of my art was the inspiration for this. I adore the colours you have used and I love the added elements - and funnily enough they are things I love to use too - the fern, the garden twine and wax seals etc. Thank you so much for your kind words, for giving me a shout out and for including the link to my video. Oh and I am certain you will love the Carnival tissue paper. Also, I am like you in that I prefer texture paste and the likes to dry naturally (although when filming I often have to speed up the process) - I even prefer acrylic paint to dry naturally as what the heat tool tends to do is to dry the outside/ top layer and it is still soft underneath - it's best if it can set on it's own. Anyway, thank you so, so much :)

Kylie I’m so touched that you liked what your inspiration helped me create, I’ve a small spin off project or two I’m thinking of for shorter videos and I’ll let you know if I manage those as well.

Archeology is digging and finding and identifying. You do this with your art....you discover the perfect pieces, you put them in your journal (personal museum) and share the journey with us. Art is one way future archeologists look for to help understand history. You are helping the future to understand what has gone before in this century.

I've always called it "Modge Podge" that's what we called it growing up. I just realized a few weeks ago it was called Mod Podge and mentioned to my husband needing some and he goes "I thought it was Modge Podge." I love the way you just chat with us while you make some absolutely amazing creations. I am so glad I found your channel you've been a helper of my creative joy. And this piece is amazing!!

Ceri, I am sure the archaeology world lost a great Welsh version of "Indiana Jones". However the entertainment/ ship world, baking and crafting world gained a genius!! The authors of the publishing world are worried that no one will buy their books when yours finally comes out. Surely your novel is in the works!! I love all the wonderful crafting videos ( also the baking ones too), but the stories of your life experiences are intriguing, wonderful and so full of adventure, told so vividly that we all get to share in the stories too. You are truly amazing Mr. Griffiths. Just so you know, I'm holding my breath for " The Amazing World of Ceri Griffiths". A best seller for sure. Many blessings to you and yours. Hi Biscuit!!

This page is wonderful! I was mesmerised by the whole process. Like you when I left school (1957) I was presented with very limited options. Bank or office were my choices, being considered too clever for factory or shop, not clever enough for anything intellectual and my parents were poor so I had to go to work. When I think of what I would have loved doing and been good at! I am now intrigued to watch Kylie's video. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve watched all your more recent videos, but just found this one. Love the idea, and the outcome as I too love archaeology and all things ancient. In all the TH-cam’s I’ve watched, I’ve never seen texture paste used like this. I love it. Thanks for expanding my knowledge of techniques. I also appreciate how you always give lots of credit for your inspiration.

I love Time Team as well and am a huge history lover. I often wish I had chosen archeology as a career. My bookshelves are filled with history, art, and archeology books, so I indulge my passion through them. When I travel, most of my time is spent in museums, art galleries, and historical buildings. You are lucky to live in Great Britain with all that rich history. 🇨🇦 This is a really interesting project. Thank you for the tip on keeping pastes from drying out.

I started to watch this video last night. Paused you and watched Kylie’s first, and then came back to you. I stopped for the night before you added color to the dragonflies. Came back this morning to finish and see the final….I just wanted to tell you when you are contemplating your next color, I am usually saying the same color that you choose. For example, when you added the green, when you said it needed another color, I also said green, just before you said green. I really enjoyed seeing this come together.

As I watch more and more of your videos, I find we have many similarities! I also wish I would have known I could be an archeologist...I love watching Yorkshire fossils you tube videos. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us. I can relate to so much...including OCD and perfection...it often hinders my creativity. You are so amazingly talented!!!

    Hi Ceri!
I love Kylie! I have watched her for over a year along with her creative partner Nina Ribena.
I really think you outdid yourself with this one! Every time you debated on a different color I kept saying blue...lol. because it was the final touch on your base layer. Another time, to get the sandy look add paint into your grit paste. The paste was fine but hard to change color after it was dried.
Your layers in collage on the left were so beautiful I actually ohhed and awed out loud!
I almost wish you had done this on something frame-able it's just so inspired! Love! ❤🌿🦋❤

I’m older than you, but I also considered archeology as a career, but stuck with illustration and graphic design. I wanted to draw the finds as they did before photography pushed drawing out of the picture (I know, really bad). It is such a shame you didn’t get better career advice, but Archeology’s loss was our gain. I also watch Time-team. I love it! I have Welsh and British ancestors. Having gone through 4 years of Trump and realizing 1/3 of my fellow Americans chose to politicize a pandemic not caring about the health of everyone else, I’d immigrate back if I was younger!!! I also love Pete Beard’s “Unsung Hero’s of Illustration”, my first love, and Dr. Kat.
