- Today on Kentucky Ballistics we shoot some 10% ballistics gel with the Smith & Wesson 460 Magnum and the Smith and Wesson 500 Magnum! We have 64 inches of 10 % ballistics gel for today’s test! I remember taking my new 357 to the indoor range. It had a flash, a loud bang. It was the beast of the range till a guy in the lane next to me shot his 460! I could feel the concussion and there is a little wall between the lanes. I had to put my 357 in therapy. It felt like a 22 short.

so glad I purchased a good amount of my ammo from Underwood!!! not only are they very affordable, but also extremely clean-burning on top of it.
had tested a box of their 240-grain .44 Magnum cartridges in my Desert Eagle during my last visit to the range, and it actually cycled so well, that I didn't have a single malfunction.

Lots of opinions here. Intreasting reading. I bought a 460 but I think 1 is as good as the other. It's kinda like comparing motorcycle crashes, who is more dead? The guy who wrecked going 200mph or the guy going 210mph. Good job Scott.

That hard case 460 was crazy going through all the 4 gel blocks. 500 also made it through all the blocks. I think the hard case does better than the extreme penetrator in penetrating through soft material. But what about hard targets like steel. Will the extreme penetrator do better than the hard case in penetrating hard steel targets?

It seems to me that gel penetration testing is somewhat open to interpretation but nevertheless, you invested a lot of time and resources into this test which is commendable. It was an interesting test. Good video.

Jesse Reiter -The holster for my 460 XL w/ 8 3/8” barrel is a chest holster. I don’t think you could carry them both unless you are a huge man !!!

I just got my 460 mainly due to flexibility of firing 45colt, 454casull, 460sw but it is a heavy gun even with the5.5in bbl(sw/xvr)!
I just took delivery of my s&w 500 magnum about two weeks ago and I’m really happy with it also I took delivery of my s&w 460 magnum abut a year ago and it’s really great
I bet his wrists hurt a bit the next day. I've shot the 500 S&W magnum before. It's no joke at all. And although the channel has grown over the years I still really like the no b.s. get to the point format of the older videos. Project Farm is set up exactly this way and had been wildly successful. Great video.
Yep I will usually skip and goto the highlights. Even then his stuff is more entertainment than actually useful information like it used to be.
Holy buckets!! The expansion on those XTP's was ridiculous. Same goes for the penetration on those hardcasts. Amazingly potent revolvers!!
Excellent ballistics test video.
The best out the two revolvers is the .460 S/W mag.,reason being because its much cheaper to shoot,(even if you reload your own ammo)
you have a broader range of loads in the .460.You can shoot .45 Long Colt,.454 Casull,then the full blown .460 mags.through it.Now the .500 S/W mag.is a very different beast,you can only shoot .500 mags though this revolver.The .500 mag.is like saying"10 gauge",you cannot shoot anything but 3-1/2"magnum shells in the 10 bore which makes the gun nearly useless with the exception of ducks,geese,bear,moose.The .500 S/W is in the boat of being a very"specialized"round for large and dangerous game like African Bull elephant,Grizzly bear,Rhino etc.
So as far as it goes between these two calibers,the .460 is the winner by far.Its a Saturday afternoon plinker(.45 Long Colt)to stay in practice with,the fall of the year during deer season(.454 Casull)to bring home venison.Then a trip to Africa for African bull elephant.(.460 400 grain cast-core sledge hammer by Buffolo-Bore)

This company produces the worlds hardest-hitting,highest muzzle velocity magnum rifle/handgun loads,is beating Underwood ammo company.(a lot of guys claim Underwood is the"top-gun"load,but when you compare the ballistic numbers,Buffolo-Bore wins)

Why does it seem like the extreme penetrator rounds penetrated less?
B/c the extreme penatrator rounds are hollow points designed to expand the second they hit something they fold backwards and become huge as if they arn't already 🤔 SMGDH..!!

I was looking at various loads so far it seems that Buffalo bore makes the best load for the 460 and its more powerful than all but one of the loads for the 500 magnum, which is only 8ft pounds less.

When the bore is so different in size what matters more than foot pounds is mass and frontal area.

Howdy Scott I watch all your videos. This video you don't seem your self, the funny fellow that always chuckles after each shot. I hope all is well and looking forward to your next video.
Did you notice the recoil differences. The 460 was easy very little muzzle jump all rounds. The 500 more but not too bad until it shot that 700 gr cast bullet. It almost got away from him and he is not weakling. I friend have to get stitches in his head when he refused to listen to me about wearing y hard hat when he shot my 700 gr bullets I cast and loaded to max psi spec. The front sight post got buried in the crown of his head and get got a hell of a lump from the barrel smashing into it as well. 6 stitches to close up the full depth gash and a very bad headache for a few days. I warned him over and over but he had a ego. Until you have felt it and learn to hold the recoil the max weight full pressure round get away from 90% of those shooting it and either hit their head or lose the hand off the gun completely and it goes flying. Its my favorite hog handgun by far. Shot thru 2 hogs once and have never had one go more than a couple feet after getting shot. I texas heart shot a 375lb one and the 500 gr fp exited its chest just under the head. Love the gun and after tuning the trigger and adjusting the cone to cylinder and loosing the compensator its much better to shoot. The comp makes it harder to shoot regardless of reducing recoil. It blows way to much gas up and in your face and the concussive blast is stupid bad. I gained about 50-100 fps by reducing the cone to cylinder gap to min spec .003-.004 Also I set my handloads to full cylinder length COAL as it helps accuracy a good bit as you still have case support on the bullet as its also into the cone and engaging the lands.
I prefer this Scott.

Just a thought or suggestion, maybe start with the most powerful bullets first so they are not impeded by the lower penetrating bullets. Thus nothing in their way to hit. Just a thought. Great video.

That 500 never stops amazing me. I eventually put a Leupold scope on mine because it was more accurate than I could see to shoot it. It cost me $120 to site it in. That too amazed me. Totally worth it. I love that thing.
I think the 500 recoil bends scope mounts or breaks scope internals
Tyler Tenkku Mine has never damaged the mounting hardware or the scope but when I first mounted the base it didn't seat all the way in the back and it shot really high. So high in fact that I ran out of adjustment in the scope bringing it back down. I eventually noticed a very slight gap in the rear of the base so I took it off and reinstalled it torquing the rear screws first. The gap tightened right up and the scope centered with in about 10 shots. It has stayed zeroed now for about 10 years. Scope is a 2.5x8 Leupold VX3. Rings are made by Warne.

I had the same Leupold scope on my 500 and no problems. I also have the same scope on my 460 XL also with no problems.

I've got a 460 with a 12 inch barrel. I think it would have been a closer test if the barrels would have been the same length. Both have a ton of powder that are being wasted in burn up outside the barrel. Longer barrels more velocity, up to a point that is.

I've got the 460 xvr and I love it. A buddy of mine has the 500, I've shot that one, but with 350 gr. bullets, that definitely lets you know you shot big bore, I can't believe the recoil of that 700 grain bullet! Holy cow. I'm trying to work up some load data for my 50 Beowulf with that 700 grain bullet. Wish me luck with that. Another excellent video Scott! Keep up the great work.
amateur tip: i put a cardboard box filled with old clothes at the end of the medium, handy for catching ones that slip out or fully penetrate. if you locate a female human they usually have an abundance of old clothes hidden someplace.
Jake A most bullets stop in the first few layers of the high tech fleece bullet stop after hitting the meat target. (Sorry wrong channel.)

If you don't want to put holes in something that could be used or donated, rubber mulch is another good thing to fill a box with.

Thank you! Great vid, Underwood makes very good high velocity and consistent ammo! I'm a Buffalo Bore ammo man but dam if Underwoods velocity and bullet weight ain't more constant and same! Cheeper too. They also make 400 Corbon my favorite semiautomatic round! About as powerful as a 10MM and faster cycling. More power than Corbon's load too. I trust my life with all three company's and feel bad kinda discing the others but I gotta give credit when it's do....
David Becker I agree. I like both companies and will shoot either ammo but Underwood loads just like a nerd with a powder trickle and micro meter and doesn't ever miss on consistently. And the price is fantastic as well. Those of us who don't hand load really don't need to with Underwood as the savings aren't huge and the loads are perfect. You may squeak a bit of performance if you load for your gun but not much. Also unlike reloads from a buddy, you are always safe and under max pressure for a given load but plenty hot to get some fireballs and serious impacts.

Both awesome guns..but I Love my 460...shot a 454 through it and the gun made it feel like a mild round...I think I'll stick to the 460 rounds though, because they feel soooo good to shoot.

Literal. Fucking. Hand cannons. I was in shock for like half of the damn video dude. And I can honestly say this, the "Desert Eagle and .44 Magnum" ain't got shit on those Revolvers. (And those are powerful handguns on their own).

What do you recommend for hunting the 460 or the 500 the 460 takes 2 other different cartridges the 500 only takes one I'm aware of.. It just seems that the 460 can do everything the 500 can do just as good
